    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies (-135, 10)

The Philadelphia Phillies are making a charge toward the postseason, and Ryan Howard is a key reason why.

The slugger will try to homer for the fourth consecutive game and draw the Phillies closer to the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL wild-card race as the teams resume their four-game series on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park.

Friday's scheduled game was rained out, and will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Sunday.

Howard did not clear .200 until May 22, and still was hitting as low as .204 as late as June 12. But the 2006 NL Most Valuable Player has proven his worth of late, helping the Phillies (80-67) draw within three games of the Brewers (83-64) for the wild card and the New York Mets for the NL East lead.

He opened the scoring in Thursday's 6-3 victory with a two-run homer - his major-league leading 43rd - in the first inning, and added an RBI double that missed being a two-run homer by inches in the fourth as Philadelphia avoided its third straight loss.

The Brewers are 3-8 in September, and each loss is leaving them with less of a chance to catch the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Milwaukee is 5 1/2 games out of first, and surging Houston is tied with the Phillies in the wild-card race.

"This series has no more importance or value than the last series, but every day is important, every game is important," said Brewers manager Ned Yost, who is looking for ways to avoid a second straight late-season collapse. "It's must-win, that must be your mind-set in September."

    Pick: Phillies

Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks (-145, 8 1/2)

A recent six-game losing streak has left the Arizona Diamondbacks in a hole. Having a healthy and effective Randy Johnson for the stretch run would give them a much better chance of climbing out.

After missing his last turn in the rotation, Johnson hopes to help the Diamondbacks make up ground in the NL West race as they continue a three-game series on Saturday night against the Cincinnati Reds.

Although Arizona (72-74) ended its season-high skid with a 3-2 victory in Friday's series opener behind Brandon Webb's 20th win, it remained 3 1/2 games behind the West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers with 16 games remaining.

Johnson (10-9, 4.21 ERA) was originally scheduled to start Sunday against the Dodgers, but was sidelined with shoulder fatigue. The left-hander, who turned 45 on Wednesday, pitched very well in eight straight second-half starts before he was reached for five runs and six hits - including four homers - over a season-low 3 2-3 innings in Arizona's 8-6 win over St. Louis on Sept. 1.

Regardless of Johnson's performance, winning two straight won't be easy for Arizona with an offense that has scored 17 runs and batted .194 in the last seven games.

Facing Cincinnati's Edinson Volquez (16-5, 3.23) won't make the task any less difficult. Volquez, making his third attempt at his 17th victory, had a chance at a 20-win season, but that seems unlikely now that he has won only once in his last four starts.

He threw a season-high 119 pitches in 5 2-3 innings at Milwaukee on Monday, giving up five runs, four hits and three walks as the Reds rallied for a 5-4 victory.

Volquez, who has never faced the Diamondbacks, is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in his last five road starts.

    Pick: Reds

        Saturday, September 13

        Guys,

The lines and totals are up for these games. I don't know why they weren't included in this update. Here's the projected scores, anyway.

        Updated

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Tips and Trends
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Brewers: After really struggling earlier in the year, Dave Bush has found his groove over the last month. In his last 10 starts, Bush has allowed two runs or less six times. However, Bush hasn't had much success on the road, going 3-6 with a 5.32 ERA. He's had even less success against the Phillies. In five career starts versus Philly, Bush has yet to factor into a decision but his ERA is a lofty 6.18. Bush's last two road starts have come in UNDER the total.

Brewers are 5-1 in their last 6 during Game 3 of a series.
Brewers are 6-2 in Bush's last 8 Saturday starts. OF Gabe Key

Injuries - Kapler (shoulder) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phillies (NA): Joe Blanton has an amazing eight no-decisions in his last 10 starts. One of the reasons for that is Blanton hasn't pitched great, allowing four runs or more five times over that span. In his last two starts, Blanton has given up eight runs in just nine innings of work. Pitching for the A's and Phillies, Blanton has gone just 3-9 at home with an ERA of 4.49. However, three of Blanton's last four home starts have gone UNDER.

Phillies are 10-3 in their last 13 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
The OVER is 7-3 in Philly's last 10 Saturday games.

        Key Injuries - NONE

        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Braves: Jo-Jo Reyes has been a train wreck for the Braves. Atlanta has lost the last 10 games that Reyes has started and he hasn't recorded a win since June 18. Ouch. Over his last 10 starts, Reyes has allowed four runs or more six times. He's been awful at home, going 2-5 with a 6.41 ERA. Not surprisingly, there tends to be a lot of runs scored when Reyes pitches. The OVER is 5-1 in his last six starts.

Braves are 0-5 in Reyes' last 5 road starts.
The OVER is 4-0 in Reyes' last 4 starts vs. NL East.

        Key Injuries - NONE

        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (NA): Pedro Martinez hasn't fared well in his last four starts, allowing 17 runs in just 22 innings of work. Martinez has struggled at Shea Stadium, going just 1-3 with a 4.62 ERA. Pedro has faced the Braves 22 times in his career, compiling a record of 11-9 to go along with a solid 3.61 ERA. Martinez was hit pretty hard his last time out against Atlanta, allowing seven hits and four runs over seven innings.

Mets are 5-16 in Martinez's last 21 starts with 5 days of rest.
The UNDER is 5-1 in Martinez's last 6 starts in Game 2 of a series.

Key Injuries - C Ramon Castro (ankle) is on the 15-day DL.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Tigers: Kenny Rogers has lost three straight games and seven of his last eight overall. The Gambler has been particularly bad in his last three starts, giving up a whopping 24 hits and 19 runs in just 14 innings of work. Rogers has had a good career against the White Sox, going 16-10 with a 4.30 ERA. The OVER has been the play of late with Rogers on the mound. The OVER is 3-1 in his last four starts.

Tigers are 1-4 in Rogers' last 5 starts vs. AL Central.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Rogers' last 10 road starts.

Key Injuries - 1B Carlos Guillen (back) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

White Sox (NA): Javier Vazquez is 1-1 in his last two starts but he's pitched pretty well over that span. In his last 12 innings pitched, Vazquez has allowed just four runs. He's been pretty average at home this year, going 6-6 with a 4.12 ERA. However, teams are only hitting .235 against Vazquez at US Cellular Field. The OVER is 4-0 in Vazquez's last four starts.

White Sox are 10-2 in their last 12 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
White Sox are 7-1 in Vazquez's last 8 home starts vs. a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (knee) is OUT.
3B Joe Crede (back) is OUT.
OF Carlos Quentin (wrist) is OUT

        PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Saturday's List of 13: Our list of best head coaches in NFL

                      13) Sean Payton, Saints-- Played QB in the CFL, Arenaball, was replacement player during '87 NFL strike. Also coached for bit at Indiana State, Larry Bird's alma mater.

                      12) Marvin Lewis, Bengals-- Was an all-conference linebacker at Idaho State; how does someone from Pennsylvania wind up playing college ball in Idaho? Rams' coach Linehan played QB at Idaho-- odd that two NFL head coaches are from there.

                      11) Lovie Smith, Bears-- Was high school coach for four years after fine career as linebacker at Tulsa. One of his assistants in Chicago is the nephew of Bear great Dick Butkus.

                      10) Jack Del Rio, Jaguars-- Was a catcher on USC's baseball team that included Randy Johnson, Mark McGwire. Drafted by Blue Jays, Del Rio was a political science major at USC.

                      9) John Fox, Panthers-- He once coached eight years in a row at eight different places as college assistant. Only current head coach I've actually met-- good guy.

                      8) Jon Gruden, Bucs-- Had 24-7 record as QB at Dayton; has a degree in communications, but hard to imagine that sneer and that voice on TV. His brother is a legend in Arena Football.

                      7) Mike Shanahan, Broncos-- Like Payton, was QB at Eastern Illinois, where he ran the wishbone; Barry Switzer gave him his start in coaching. 28-year old son Kyle is offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.

                      6) Andy Reid, Eagles-- Was offensive lineman on three BYU teams that went to Holiday Bowl; one of BYU's assistants then was Mike Holmgren, which is how Reid got into coaching.

                      5) Jeff Fisher, Titans-- Check out the other three DBs on USC team Fisher played on in college-- Ronnie Lott, Joey Browner, Dennis Smith. Fisher was also backup kicker for the Trojans.

                      4) Tom Coughlin, Giants-- More impressed by his 72-64 record coaching expansion Jaguars than by what he's done with New Jersey Giants. Was a D-III college coach for four years (RIT). .

                      3) Mike Holmgrem, Seahawks-- Was backup QB at USC, who was drafted in 8th round by Cardinals; NFL Draft is only seven rounds now. Another guy who was a high school coach.

                      2) Tony Dungy, Colts-- Played QB in college at Minnesota; in brief NFL playing career, was DB for Steelers, where he had 9 INTs in thirty games. He held records for passing yards and TD passes for Gophers when he graduated.

                      1) Bill Belichick, Patriots-- Played D-III ball at Wesleyan, where he was a center. Has daughter who is a prep school lacrosse coach- one of his sons currently plays lacrosse at Rutgers.
