Michigan at Notre Dame [NBC | 3:30 PM ET]

Michigan (-1, O/U 35.5): After falling to Utah in its opener, Michigan rebounded with an ugly win over Miami, OH at home. After the win head coach Rich Rodriguez admitted the program still has a ways to go and said he will continue to rotate quarterbacks Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan. Rodriguez was hoping that one of the young quarterbacks would have established themselves by the Notre Dame game, but that hasn’t been the case. The Wolverines are still looking for playmakers on offense, while seven of the top eight offensive linemen from last year are either gone or injured, further hurting the offense’s production.

Favorite is 3-9 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The UNDER is 13-3 in Michigan's last 16 September games.

Key Injuries - LT Mark Ortmann (shoulder) is out.
RB Michael Shaw (groin) is probable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish were expected to be much better this season but it didn’t show last week when Notre Dame barely escaped at home against San Diego State, one of the worst teams in Division I. The Irish scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull out to win, thanks to quarterback Jimmy Clausen throwing for 237 yards and three scores. Clausen did throw two picks but looked more comfortable leading the Irish offense than he did a season ago. Notre Dame’s rush defense played well against the Aztecs, allowing just 71 yards on the ground.

Notre Dame is 9-19 ATS in its last 28 games.
The UNDER is 10-2 in Notre Dame’s last 12 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - FS Jashaad Gaines (personal reasons) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 20 (Side Play of the Day)

#5 Ohio State at #1 USC [ABC | 8 PM ET]

Ohio State: With the big matchup versus USC looming, the Buckeyes almost forgot they had to play a game against Ohio first. Ohio State trailed the Bobcats 14-12 before pulling away in the fourth quarter. Head coach Jim Tressel even admitted after the game that he thought his team was looking ahead to the Trojans. Tressel better hope that’s the case because if the Buckeyes don’t play much better on Saturday, they’ll get blown out. The offense sputtered without star running back Beanie Wells, who is expected to play this week. Todd Boeckman threw for only 110 yards against the Bobcats, often missing open receivers badly. If Boeckman struggles early against the Trojans, expect to see freshman sensation Terrelle Pryor get more snaps under center.

Ohio State is 11-3 ATS in its last 14 road games.
Ohio State is 5-0-1 ATS in its last 6 vs. Pac-10.

Key Injuries - RB Chris Wells (foot) is probable.
CB Donald Washington (suspension) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 14 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

USC (-10.5, O/U 43): After hammering Virginia 52-7 in the opener, USC has had two weeks to sit back and wait for the Buckeyes to visit. While this is a huge game for both teams, Pete Carroll said the coaching staff will spend a few days of the week working hard with the younger players before getting into game-planning for Ohio State. USC’s defense manhandled Virginia and they must be licking their chops after watching the Buckeyes struggle offensively against Ohio. Mark Sanchez looks like he is going to be the next great USC quarterback after throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns against Virginia. In a battle between two of college football’s best defenses, Sanchez could be the deciding factor.

USC is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games following a bye week.
The UNDER is 6-1 in USC's last 7 home games.

Key Injuries - WR Vidal Hazelton (ankle) is probable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 24

        #10 Wisconsin at #21 Fresno State [ESPN2 | 10:30 PM ET]

Wisconsin (-1.5, O/U 51): After two tune-ups against Akron and Marshall, the Badgers travel to a place no BCS school likes to go: Fresno State. Last week Wisconsin fell behind Marshall 14-0 but then scored 51 unanswered points to win 51-14. New quarterback Allan Evridge showed he could throw the ball when called upon to do so, tossing for 308 yards and a touchdown. Evridge will need a repeat performance against a tough Bulldogs defense that will crowd the box to stop the run. The Wisconsin pass defense still needs some work after allowing 239 yards through the air to Marshall.

Wisconsin is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 non-conference games.
Wisconsin is 0-6 ATS in its last 6 road games.

Key Injuries - CB Mario Goins (foot) is questionable.
TE Travis Beckum (hamstring) is probable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 27

Fresno State: The Bulldogs have already toppled one BCS conference team when they traveled cross-country to Rutgers and easily disposed of the Scarlet Knights. This time Fresno State will have the luxury of playing in front of sold-out and raucous Bulldog Stadium. It will be a giant opportunity for the Bulldogs, who often must go on the road to play against quality opponents. Fresno can’t afford to get off to a slow start this week like they did against Rutgers when they went scoreless in the first half. Quarterback Tom Brandstater will look to exploit the Badgers secondary but Fresno State’s receivers need to hang onto the football. They had four drops against Rutgers.

Fresno State is 3-10 ATS in its last 13 home games.
The OVER is 4-1 in Fresno State's last 5 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - LB Nick Bates (arm) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 24

          North Carolina at Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights try to bounce back from a Week 1 loss to Fresno State, but come into the game with just a 1-4 ATS record over the last three seasons as a favorite between 3 1/2 and 10 points. North Carolina is the underdog pick (+5 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Rutgers favored by only 1. Dunkel Pick: North Carolina (+5 1/2).

North Carolina at Rutgers [ESPN | 7:45 PM ET]

North Carolina: The Tar Heels won their opener over Division I-AA McNeese State 35-27 in a game that was much tougher than anticipated. The running game struggled with the tailbacks contributing only 69 yards to the 163-yard total. Wide receiver Brandon Tate provided some big plays on reverses or the Tar Heels would have netted only 57 yards on the ground. North Carolina was no better at stopping the run. The Heels defense allowed McNeese State to rush for 152 yards. Even though Rutgers no longer has Ray Rice, they will look to exploit Carolina’s soft run defense with Kordell Young. Overall, the Heels gave up 391 to McNeese State, so defense is a huge concern for Butch Davis coming into this game. The Tar Heels will be looking for their first victory outside of the state of North Carolina since 2002.

North Carolina is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games in September.
North Carolina is 0-5 ATS in its 5 vs. Big East.

Key Injuries - FB Bobby Rome (ankle) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 24 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Rutgers (-5, O/U 45): The Scarlet Knights will be looking to rebound after a disappointing home loss to Fresno State to open the season. Rutgers will be looking to re-establish its dominance at home. The Scarlet Knights went 7-0 at home in 2006 but are just 5-4 since. If that’s going to happen, Rutgers needs to find some offense. They recorded just 106 rushing yards against Fresno State and were held scoreless in the first half. The Scarlet Knights have a talented trio of receivers but there were way too many drops in the opener. This game features an interesting battle of coaches. Greg Schiano was Butch Davis' defensive coordinator at the University of Miami, and this is the first time the two will face off as head coaches.

Rutgers is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 Thursday games.
Rutgers is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games vs. a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - DE Gary Watts (knee) is questionable.
LT Anthony Davis (back) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 28

                #13 Kansas at #19 South Florida [ESPN2 | 8 PM ET]

Kansas: The Jayhawks come into this matchup averaging 35 points per game. They are led by quarterback Todd Reesing and receiver Dezmon Briscoe. Reesing has thrown for 668 yards and six touchdowns over the season’s first two weeks, including a career-high 412 yards with three scores in last week’s win over Louisiana Tech. Briscoe caught three touchdowns in the season opener and already has 16 receptions for 201 yards in 2008. However, the Jayhawks offense will step up in class against a tough South Florida defense. Coming off its first shutout against a major-college team since 1999, the Kansas defense isn’t too shabby itself, allowing a total of 10 points on the year.

Kansas is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 road games.
Kansas is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - WR Dexton Fields (leg) is OUT.
CB Kendrick Harper (neck) is doubtful.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 21

South Florida (-3.5, O/U 47): The Bulls have exceeded more than 500 yards in back-to-back games against Division I-AA Tennessee Martin and state rival UCF. This week the Bulls face a Kansas squad that hasn’t allowed an offensive touchdown in two games this year. The leader of South Florida’s offense is quarterback Matt Grothe. The junior racked up over 400 yards of total offense last week and his mobility should cause a lot of problems for the Jayhawks. The Bulls’ two top running backs – Mike Ford and Ben Williams – are both nursing injured ankles. After two weeks, South Florida’s pass defense ranks fifth in the nation, allowing just 94 yards per game. Kansas has a couple of young tackles and that could be a problem tonight when they go up against pass rushing demon George Selvie.

South Florida 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games in September.
The OVER is 4-0 in South Florida's last 4 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - RB Mike Ford (ankle) is questionable.
OL Zach Hermann (foot) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 24

                    Saturday's Games

Texas-Arkansas game has been pushed back to September 27 because of the weather; Air Force-Houston game will now be played in Dallas. TCU-Stanford game is now noon start, instead of a night game. Washington State-Baylor is now Friday game.

                    Top 13 games

Winner of Rice-Vanderbilt game will be unlikely 3-0 squad; if Commodores win, they’ll be halfway to earning first bowl bid since 1982. Owls scored 15 points in last 80 seconds to steal win at Memphis last week, getting winning score on INT for TD with 0:14 left- they’ve scored 98 points in first two games.

Mississippi State stunned Auburn 19-14 LY, but Tigers won last two visits to Starkville, 43-14/34-0; their last four series wins are all by 28+ points. Tigers are 7-4-1 vs spread in last dozen tries as road favorite. State covered just two of eight as home underdog. Auburn has LSU up next, so lookahead alert for them, but last year's Bulldog upset probably keeps Auburn's attention here.

BYU, UCLA are playing for third time in 13 months, with teams splitting last year’s games; BYU won bowl matchup when they blocked short FG try that would have given Bruins win. Cougars won 28-27 at Washington last week, blocking 35-yard PAT try that would have tied game with 0:02 left. UCLA covered its last 11 tries as dog, upsetting Tennessee in opener 12 days ago.

Oregon travels east after scoring 110 points in pair of routs over Washington, Utah State; first road start for Roper, playing in place of injured starter Costa, who is out for year. Roper is also banged-up, but #3 QB has also played well. Hard to figure what Purdue has, since their opener was against Northern Colorado.

South Carolina smarting after second consecutive loss to Vandy they won between hedges LY, ending long series losing skid— Georgia won last three visits here by average of nine points, shutting Gamecocks out 18-0 in last visit here in 2006. Three of last four series games were decided by four points or less.

Weather expected to be dicey, even with game moved to Dallas. Houston led Oklahoma State 16-14 at half last week, lost 56-37; Cowboys had both receiver, runner gain 200+ yards. Air Force held Wyoming scoreless in second half last week, winning their MWC opener 23-3. Was thinking of using Air Force, but option team in horrible weather might not be the best idea.

Fresno State travels all over country to play bigtime opponents; tonight, Wisconsin visits Bulldog club that won their opener at Rutgers. Badgers were down 14-0 at home to Marshall last week, then scored game’s last 51 points- they had 400+ rushing yards in opener vs. Akron team that won next game 42-28 at Syracuse. Wisconsin is 5-6 vs spread in last 11 tries as road favorite.

Michigan is 3-2 in last five games vs. Notre Dame, with wins by 38-26-38 points; they held Irish to 79 total yards in 38-0 rout LY, outrushing ND 289-M6!!! Wolverines beat Miami 16-6 last week, after 25-23 loss to Utah in opener- this is first road start for QB Threet. Irish came from behind late to beat San Diego State last week, same Aztecs who lost to I-AA team the week before.

Georgia Tech pulled upset at Boston College last week, tries to do it again in Blacksburg, vs. Hokie squad that took redshirt off QB Taylor and went back to two-QB system (not always best for team morale, especially when one is white, the other black). Road team won three of last four series games, with Jackets winning last visit here 38-27- they got crushed 27-3 at home LY, getting outgained 482-271 with -5 turnover ratio.

Stanford’s pass defense needs work; in their first two games, Cardinal opponents are 61-90/740 passing. TCU is 10-4 against spread as home favorite; they have 15 starters back but a soph QB. Cardinals is 9-6 vs spread as road dog- they lost 38-36 at home to Frogs LY, in game they led by 14 in second half, week after their big USC upset.

Status of Ohio State’s star runner Wells still unclear; Buckeyes trailed Ohio U in fourth quarter at home last week, so the public figures OSU will get blasted in Coliseum, but Tressel’s troops are 3-1 as underdog. since '04. USC is loaded with inexperienced talent- they have 1st-year QB, four new starters on OL, so they are not invincible, though Carroll usually at his best in these type of games. Trojans are 21-8 vs spread in non-league games.

Arizona takes 2-0 record on road to visit 0-2 New Mexico squad that scored couple of 4th-quarter TDs at home vs. Texas A&M last week, in 28-22 loss, after they got drilled 26-3 week before by TCU. Wildcats gave senior QB in Tuitama- they have UCLA up next, so trap game here. Arizona was 2-0 as road favorite last year, but covered just five of last 18 as a favorite overall.

Arkansas State beat Aggies in College Station, then hung 83 on I-AA Texas Southern, now we’ll see how they do at home vs a Southern Miss team that is on the same level, having covered as road dog last week at Auburn (27-13). USM won last two series meetings, by 6-12 points, but last one was in ’05. ASU ran ball for 255 yards at Texas A&M-- they could be Sun Belt's best.

Knowledge for rest of the card

-- Home side won last two Ball State-Akron games, with Cards losing last visit here, 35-23. Both sides had good wins last week, with Ball beating Navy on ESPN, while Zips went to Syracuse and won by two TDs, after game was tied 28-28.

-- If SMU gave up 56 to Rice, 36 to Texas State, what will Texas Tech lay on the Ponies? Tech won 35-19 in Reno last week, but were just 19-46/297 thru air. Porous Mustang defense should be cure for what ails Red Raider offense.

-- New Mexico State had their opener postponed (hurricane) last week, they’re playing opener at Nebraska squad that is already 2-0, having won its first two games, both by exactly 23 points.
-- Texas-Arkansas game has been postponed until September 27. ***************.com is America’s favorite website.
-- Oregon State went in tank at Penn State last week, losing by 31, after getting upset at Stanford week before, despite passing for 400+ yards. Interesting to see if Beavers can lay lumber on island-loving Hawai’i squad that was down at half to Weber St. last week. OSU is 6-2 in last eight tries as a home favorite.
-- Penn State crushed Beavers in Beaver Stadium last week, now head up I-81 to face struggling Syracuse squad that lost at home by two TDs to Akron last week. First road start for PSU QB Clark, but if game is a sellout, it’ll be because most fans are wearing blue—only 31,808 attended SU’s home opener.
-- Home side won last four Iowa-Iowa State rivalry games, with Cyclones losing last two visits here, 17-10/27-17. Hawkeyes are 2-6 in last eight tries as home fave. First road start for Arnaud, Cyclones' sophomore QB.

-- NC State lost last four games vs Clemson, dropping last two visits to Death Valley by six points each. Both sides beat I-AA foes last week, but neither was stylish. Tiger QB Harper is said to be nursing sore shoulder.
-- Idaho snapped losing skid with 42-27 win over Idaho State last week, while Western Michigan beat Northern Illinois 29-26 in MAC opener, after losing 47-24 at Nebraska. Broncos are 1-4 vs spread in lat five tries as road favorite.
-- Ohio U is 0-2, but lost by point at Wyoming, led in 4th quarter in Horseshoe last week, so they’re capable underdog that lost last two meetings with Chippewas by 27-21 points. Central won 11 of last 12 MAC road games (7-3-1 vs sprea).
-- Cal scored 104 pts in winning first two games, has bye next, so no look-ahead trap here. Maryland was awful in red zone in horrible 24-14 loss at Middle Tennessee last week, while Cal was up 42-3 at half in Pac-10 road game at Wazzu (won 66-3).
-- Washington State-Baylor game is now an 8:30 Friday kickoff.

-- Temple lost rainy OT game to UConn at home last week, after leading just about whole way; Owls lost 42-7 at home to Buffalo LY, after losing 9-3 in OT here two years ago. Buffalo hung with Pitt after drilling UTEP in opener- they're one of nation’s more improved teams.
-- Tennessee has had 12 days to stew about OT loss at UCLA, now get to take it out on UAB squad that lost 49-34 at FAU last week. Blazer defense isn’t good, and thats being kind. Vols have Florida on deck, but after UCLA debacle, lookahead unlikely. .
-- East Carolina won last three games, all vs. ranked teams, now is on upset alert, visiting Tulane squad that outgained Alabama by over 100 yards, after falling behind quickly on pair of Bama special teams TDs. Home side won eight of last nine in series.
-- Which is worse? Memphis led Rice by 15 with 9:00 left, then gave up 15 points in last 80 seconds, including 69-yard INT for TD with 0:14 left to blow game. Marshall led 14-0 at Wisconsin, then gave up 51 straight points. Home side won last three series games. Neither side worth a look here.
-- Virginia QB Lalich is out (legal issues); Cavs (-3) beat UConn 17-16 LY, one of several close games they won in ’07- they struggled to beat Richmond 16-0 last week, after getting waxed 52-7 by USC. Huskies won OT game in rain at Temple last week, running ball for almost 300 yards.

-- Washington played hearts out last week, fell to 0-2 after 28-27 home loss to BYU, now powerful Oklahoma (beat pretty good Cincinnati team 52-26 last week) comes to Seattle. Sooners are just 5-13-2 vs spread as road favorite.
-- Bowling Green upset Pitt in opener, then got upset at home by Minnesota, now visits blue carpet in Boise, where the Broncos covered 39 of last 53 as home favorite. Falcons lost 48-20 last time teams met, three years ago.
-- Utah beat MWC rival UNLV 42-21 last week after being tied at half, week after win at Michigan, so rivals Utes, BYU seem on collision course for BCS berth. Utah State lost 66-24 at Oregon last week; they loat ten in row vs. Utes, dropping 48-6/48-0 tilts in Utah’s last two visits to Logan, where the stadium is named after Mitt Romney, the rich dude who ran for President.
-- San Diego State had 13-7 lead and ball on Notre Dame 4 last week, before goal line fumble ruined day for Aztecs- they won seven of last eight games vs San Jose State, but lost last visit here in ’06. Spartans squeaked by I-AA foe 13-10 in its opener, while Aztecs were losing 29-27 to Cal Poly in their opener.
-- Arizona State cruised by Stanford in Pac-10 opener UNLV was tied with Utah at half, but lost by 21 in its MWC opener. ASU is 15-9 vs spread as home favorite, but has Georgia coming in next week, so doubt Sun Devils are 100% focused on this.

-- Florida Atlantic banks another big check after pasting UAB last week, bouncing back from 52-21 loss to Texas in its opener. Michigan State lost 38-31 at Cal in its opener- they're 0-7 vs the spread in game before playing Notre Dame the last seven years.
-- Alabama scored two quick special teams TDs last week, then was sluggish on offense rest of way, getting outgained by 100+ yards by Tulane team playing its opener after being displaced by hurricane. Western Kentucky is in first year as D-I team.
-- Middle Tennessee beat Maryland 24-14 last week, will be confident group heading to Lexington to play Kentucky squad that is bitching about not being ranked—they beat Louisville 27-2, but then beat Norfolk State last week. If you want to get ranked, please play better teams.
-- Illinois covered just four of last 11 as home favorite, one of its last seven vs non-league teams. ULL gave up 633 total yards in loss to Southern Miss; they're 11-6 as a road underdog.
-- LSU hasn’t played D-I team yet, getting game postponed last week, after Appalchian State win. North Texas is young team learning wide open offense; they’ve been getting killed while they learn, losing first two games this year 45-6/56-26.
