    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, September 8

It's the regular-season premiere of Monday Night Football tonight, with Minnesota playing in Green Bay, and Denver visiting Oakland. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup...

    Event of the day . . .

The Packers/Vikings matchup gets the evening started on Monday, with kickoff set for 7:00pm ET. This contest could have been much more interesting had Green Bay allowed Brett Favre to move to Minnesota, but as it stands it'll still be a big clash between a pair of teams with designs on claiming the NFC North division title.

The oddsmakers have the Packers pegged as 2-point home favorites in this game against their hated rival, with the total for the night sitting at 37.5 points. Green Bay running back Ryan Grant (hamstring) is listed as PROBABLE to take the field Monday. Minnesota quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (knee) is listed as PROBABLE as well.

The late game of the doubleheader features a pair of AFC West rivals, with the Raiders hosting the Broncos. Oakland has put the team's fortunes in the hands of a pair of young offensive players: QB JaMarcus Russell and RB Darren McFadden. Denver is hoping to rebound from a mediocre 2007 campaign that saw them finish at just 7-9.

The Broncos are pegged as 3-point road favorites on Monday night, with the game's total listed at 41 points. Oakland wide receiver Javon Walker (hamstring) is officially listed as QUESTIONABLE to play against his old team, and is a game-time decision. Denver linebacker Boss Bailey (ankle) was also listed as QUESTIONABLE for Monday.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The Tigers and Athletics are simply playing out the string in September, and those two teams will begin a set in Detroit on Monday night. Oakland will send Gio Gonzalez (1-3, 7.18 ERA) to the hill in the series opener, while Detroit is expected to counter with Zach Miner (8-4, 3.72 ERA). Miner was rocked for five runs in his last trip to the mound.

    Also on the schedule . . .

There are five other AL games on Monday, including the launch of a series between the Rays and Red Sox in Boston. The pitching matchup for that game is expected to be Edwin Jackson (11-9, 4.07 ERA) vs. Jon Lester (13-5, 3.37 ERA). Also on the slate: Cleveland at Baltimore, Toronto at the White Sox, and the Yankees at the Angels.

Over in the National League the top pitcher on the schedule is San Francisco's Tim Lincecum (15-3, 2.60 ERA), who'll try to pitch his club past the D-Backs and Yusmeiro Petit (3-4, 3.44 ERA) at home. Rounding out the NL slate: Florida at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh at Houston, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, and the Dodgers at San Diego.

Finally, there's just one WNBA game on the Monday schedule to tip off the final week of the league's regular season: the Atlanta Dream will get a visit from the Indiana Fever.

    News from the wire . . .

White Sox third baseman Joe Crede could miss the rest of the season with a back injury . . . Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has been activated from the disabled list and will be eased back into the lineup this week . . . Mariners catcher Jeff Clement will undergo knee surgery and is out for the year . . . Yankees reliever Alfredo Aceves will make his first start of the season against the Angels on Tuesday night.

    Peek at the future . . .

It'll be Scott Kazmir (11-6, 2.99 ERA) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (16-2, 2.88 ERA) in Game 2 of the Tampa Bay/Boston series on Tuesday night . . . the 2008 Chase for the Sprint Cup gets underway at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday with the Sylvania 300 . . . Golf's Ryder Cup will get started at Valhalla Golf Club on September 18.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- On same day Matt Cassel replaced an injured Tom Brady in first quarter at Foxboro, his brother Jack came in as reliever for an injured Wandy Rodriguez in 2nd inning at Denver.

-- Toronto swept the Rays in Rogers Centre, moved into 3rd place in AL East. Blue Jays won their last eight games.

-- Cleveland Indians are 69-72; Cliff Lee is 21-2, making him this generation's version of Steve Carlton.

-- After winning his first two starts for Pittsburgh, Karstens is 0-5, 8.52 in his last five starts. Nice trade, Buccos.

-- Dodgers won eighth straight game, moved 1.5 games up on Arizona in the National League West.

-- There have been 249,996 home runs hit in history of major leagues; whoever hits the fourth home run Monday will hit the 250,000th homer in big league history, a pretty cool thing.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up the first NFL Sunday.......

        13) The NFL is our country's best sports league because any year, any team can win the Super Bowl; greatness is fragile, as fragile as your star player's knee. Just ask the Patriots.

        12) Best drama of day was gutty Jake Delhomme throwing the game-winning TD on the last play of day, silencing Chargers' home crowd in a dramatic 26-24 win. John Fox can coach; they beat Chargers in Qualcomm playing without Steve Smith.

        11) The network executives who penciled the Browns into five primetime TV slots better get their erasers out. Cleveland's "D" had a terrible day, allowing Dallas 467 yards, 30 first downs.

        10) Cowboys, Eagles both crushed their opponents Sunday-- next week's primetime game becomes a very interesting one.

        9) There were only two games Sunday where both teams had 10+ points at halftime. Matt Ryan tossed a 62-yard TD pass on his first professional throw for Atlanta. Two-time MVP Kurt Warner managed a surprisingly easy 23-13 win for Arizona. 49ers got their first taste of Martz Madness (five turnovers!!!)

        8) Jeremy Shockey had productive day for Saints- Brees was 23-32/337 yards. New Orleans has a wide variety of offensive weapons- their games with Carolina should be exceptional.

        7) Rookie Matt Forte is the first Bears' runner ever to gain 100+ yards in his first game. Considering both Gale Sayers, Walter Payton are former Bears, thats pretty damn good. .

        6) Cincinnati Bengals ran only fifty plays from scrimmage, got a total of 154 yards in a dismal loss at Baltimore. Cincy had 8 first downs, were 2-13 on third down, were outgained 358-154.

        5) I wouldn't want to have to tackle Buffalo's Roscoe Parrish on a wet day in open field. Other than Mr Hester in Chicago, Parrish might be the most dangerous return guy in the NFL.

        4) Not to be overly critical, but the Matt Millen era in Detroit isn't really going that well.

        3) Of all the cruddy things Mike Martz did as head coach in St Louis, by far the worst was cutting Kurt Warner and keeping Marc Bulger. A hideous mistake the Rams are still paying for.

        2) Hey, when did Brett Favre get traded to the Jets?

        1) Patriots are bringing Chris Simms and Tim Rattay in to try out in next few days. Rattay is significantly better than any of the QBs on their roster. Simms isn't, but he looks sharp when he's in uniform and his dad was a terrific player.

Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Vikings: Expectations are high in Minnesota but the Vikings are going to go only as far as young quarterback Tarvaris Jackson can take them. Jackson suffered a sprained knee in the Vikings second preseason game but he says he’s ready to go tonight against the Packers. Jackson is coming off a season where he threw nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions but Minnesota brought in receiver Bernard Berrian this offseason to help Jackson improve on those numbers. However, star LT Bryant McKinnie will not play due to suspension, so that won’t help Jackson against a strong Green Bay pass rush. Head coach Brad Childress is hoping to finally break through against the Packers. The Vikings haven’t beaten Green Bay since Childress took over as head coach in 2006.

Vikings are 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 vs. NFC North.
Road team is 10-2 ATS in their last 12 meetings.

Key Injuries - QB Tarvaris Jackson (knee) is probable.
OT Bryant McKinnie (suspension) is out.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 17

Packers (-2.5, O/U 38): For the first time since Sept. 7 1992, someone other than Brett Favre will start under center for the Packers. There’s pressure and then there’s what Aaron Rodgers is facing this season. All eyes will be on the young quarterback as he takes his first step in replacing Favre, who is a God-like figure in Green Bay. One thing Rodgers will have to overcome is an inconsistent offensive line that was shuffled around this preseason. To offset weaknesses in the line, expect the Packers to roll out Rodgers away from the pass rush quite a bit tonight. Defensive tackle was an area of strength a year ago for the Packers but right now, Green Bay currently only has three players at that position on its roster. They’ll be tested tonight when the Vikings give them a steady dose of Adrian Peterson early and often.

The Packers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 September games.
The OVER is 8-0 in Green Bay's last 8 vs. the NFC.

Key Injuries - LB A.J. Hawk (chest) is questionable.
DT Ryan Pickett (hamstring) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 27 (Side Play of the Day)

Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders [ESPN | 10:15 PM ET]

Broncos (-3, O/U 41): Denver star WR Brandon Marshall’s NFL suspension was reduced from three games to one but it’s going to be difficult for Denver to overcome not having its top playmaker for the opener. Without Marshall in the lineup, Darrell Jackson and rookie Eddie Royal will likely be QB Jay Cutler’s top targets in the passing game. Because of injuries this preseason, the Broncos are down to four healthy running backs: Selvin Young, Andre Hall, Michael Pittman and Peyton Hillis, who will start at fullback, while Young and Hall will receive most of the carries. The Broncos much maligned rush defense will be tested by the Raiders talented trio of backs. Last season, Denver ranked 30th in the NFL at defending the run.

Broncos are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 vs. the AFC West.
The OVER is 9-2 in Denver's last 11 vs. the AFC.

Key Injuries - WR Brandon Marshall (suspension) is out.
C Tom Nalen (knee) is OUT.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 24

Raiders: Heading into his second season, QB JaMarcus Russell is now the man in Oakland. He doesn’t have to look over his shoulder as head coach Lane Kiffin said the team has faith in Russell and plans on fighting through the growing pains with him. Russell was just average this preseason, going 26-of-50 for 228 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Luckily, Russell has a talented group of running backs to help take the pressure off of him. The Raiders were third in the NFL in rushing offense a year ago and it should be more of the same this season with the trio of Justin Fargas, Michael Busch and explosive rookie Darren McFadden. The Raiders offensive line is a question mark heading into the season, particularly when it comes to pass protection. Kwame Harris is making his first start at left tackle for Oakland and his job will be to block Elvis Dummervil, who already owns a couple of two-sack games against the Raiders.

Raiders are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 Monday games.
The OVER is 4-1 in Oakland's last 5 September games.

Key Injuries - WR Javon Walker (hamstring) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 20 (Total Play of the Day)

                      SCOREBOARD

                      Monday, Sept. 8

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (10:05 p.m. EDT). Carl Pavano (2-0, 4.20 ERA) tries to stop the bleeding for the fourth-place Yankees, who are 8 1/2 games behind the Red Sox for the wild card spot with 19 games left. Jon Garland (12-8, 4.64) pitches for the Angels, whose magic number for clinching the division over Texas is three.

                      STARS

                      Sunday

-Chris Young, Padres, pitched 7 2-3 perfect innings before Gabe Kapler broke it up with a home run, and San Diego routed Milwaukee 10-1.

-Carlos Delgado, Mets, hit two homers and drove in four runs in the nightcap of a doubleheader to help New York salvage a split with the Phillies.

-Jose Lopez, Mariners, went deep twice for his first multihomer game to help Seattle beat New York 5-2.

-David Purcey, Blue Jays, pitched eight strong innings and Toronto shut out Tampa Bay 1-0 for its eighth straight win.

-Pablo Sandoval, Giants, had two hits and drove in five runs to help San Francisco beat Pittsburgh 11-6.

-Cliff Lee, Indians, won his 10th straight decision, holding the Royals to a run and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings in Cleveland's 3-1 win.

                      NEARLY PERFECT

Chris Young came within four outs of a perfect game, retiring the first 23 Brewers in order before Gabe Kapler homered, and the Padres beat Milwaukee 10-1. Young got Prince Fielder and Corey Hart to pop out in the eighth before Kapler hit Young's 76th pitch of the game - a 1-0 fastball - into the left-field bleachers. If Young had succeeded, it would have been the 18th perfect game in MLB history, and first since Arizona's Randy Johnson accomplished the feat on May 18, 2004, with a 2-0 victory over the Braves. Young gave up two hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out five in his first complete game in 114 starts.

                      21

Cliff Lee won his 10th straight decision, the longest winning streak in the majors this season, for his major league-leading 21st win. He held the Royals to one run and seven hits - six of them singles - in 7 1-3 innings, while striking out five and walking one, as the Indians beat the Royals 3-1. Lee is 10-0 in 11 starts since a July 6 loss at Minnesota. In those 11 starts, Lee has a 1.84 ERA, and he's lowered his major league-leading ERA to 2.28.

                      10

The Giants scored 10 runs in the fourth inning against the Pirates in an 11-6 win. It started with an error by right-hander Jeff Karstens, and included an injury to center fielder Nate McLouth as the first eight Giants reached base. Pablo Sandoval drove in four runs in the inning, three on a bases-loaded double. Emmanuel Burriss and Nate Schierholtz each had two hits, and Randy Winn and Burriss each scored twice. It was the Giants' most runs in an inning since they scored 10 in the second at Houston on Sept. 23, 2003.

                      SAVING GRACE

Francisco Rodriguez bounced back after giving up the tying run in Saturday's loss, pitching a scoreless ninth for his 55th save in 61 chances in the Angels' 3-2 win over the White Sox. He allowed a one-out single by Paul Konerko but retired Alexei Ramirez on a groundout and struck out Nick Swisher to end the game. Rodriguez is two saves shy of Bobby Thigpen's major league record of 57 set in 1990 for the White Sox.

                      FREE FALLING

The Mariners beat the Yankees 5-2, sending New York tumbling into fourth place in the AL East because the Blue Jays beat the Rays 1-0 for their eighth straight win. The Yankees, who have made the postseason for 13 consecutive years, trail the Red Sox by 8 1/2 games in the AL wild-card standings with 19 games remaining. "There are 19 games left, and we have to win most of them. Maybe all of them,'' manager Joe Girardi said, flatly.

                      ROOKIE TRICKS

Alex Rodriguez got picked off first base to kill a rally when he got tricked by a rookie first baseman. With the Yankees trailing the Mariners 3-2 in the fifth, Rodriguez walked with two outs and Derek Jeter already at second. First baseman Bryan LaHair, who has played with pitcher Ryan Feierabend for years in the minor leagues, was playing behind the bag and flashed a familiar signal to his buddy for a backdoor pickoff play. Rodriguez was caught so far off first, his only play was to run to second. That forced Jeter toward third. In the ensuing rundown, LaHair threw to third base and Adrian Beltre ran down Jeter to end the inning. LaHair estimates he's been successful all but once in the 30 times he's tried the play with Feierabend.

                      WORTHY CAUSE

Albert Pujols would be happy if every Cardinals game included a "buddy walk'' for children with Down Syndrome. It certainly brings out the best in the team's star. Pujols, whose adopted daughter Isabella has Down Syndrome, hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat in a 3-1 victory over the Marlins. Since becoming spokesman for the games in 2002, he's 10-for-24 with six homers and 11 RBIs and the Cardinals are 5-1. He homered in his first three at-bats in the 2006 game.

                      SCRATCHED

Randy Johnson of the Diamondbacks was scratched from his start against the Dodgers because of shoulder fatigue. ... Carlos Silva of the Mariners was scratched from his start against the Yankees because of stiffness in his back. Left-hander Ryan Feierabend got the start instead, and took the win as Seattle prevailed 5-2 over the Yankees.

                      TOSSED

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was ejected in the first inning of a crucial game against the Mets for arguing an unusual call: catcher's interference. New York slugger David Wright was awarded first base after a foul ball because plate umpire Jerry Meals ruled Chris Coste's mitt touched Wright's bat as he swung. Manuel came out of the dugout and the 6-foot-4 manager towered over Meals as he gestured and pointed down at the ump. After a long argument, Meals ejected Manuel while the Shea Stadium crowd roared. It was Manuel's fourth ejection this season.

                      AILING

Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez left the game in the second inning against Colorado because of a right oblique strain. Rodriguez was lifted for a pinch hitter with two outs and a runner on third in the top of the second. After his scoreless inning, Rodriguez was 8-6 with a 3.73 ERA. ... Between doubleheader games, the Mets got bad news: injured closer Billy Wagner felt pain in his ailing elbow while throwing to a hitter in a virtually empty stadium. He'll be re-examined by a doctor Monday and his return appears uncertain.

                      OUCH

Nate McLouth left the Pirates' game against the Giants in the bottom of the fourth inning after being struck near his left eye by a batted ball. The All-Star center fielder dived for a sinking liner hit by Pablo Sandoval. The ball bounced in front of McLouth and ricocheted off him into left field, allowing three runs to score on the play. McLouth left with a cut above his left eyebrow that required three stitches, and was replaced by Nyjer Morgan.

                      SPEAKING

"Seriously, that was a great play. To this moment, I haven't seen him throw the ball to first yet.'' - Alex Rodriguez, after he was picked off first base on a trick play between first baseman Bryan LaHair and pitcher Ryan Feierabend of the Mariners.

                      SEASONS

1965 - Bert Campaneris of the Kansas City A's played all nine positions but had to leave after a ninth-inning collision with Ed Kirkpatrick of the Angels. The Angels won 5-3 in 13 innings.

1985 - Cincinnati's Pete Rose inserted himself into the lineup when the Chicago Cubs named right-hander Reggie Patterson as the starting pitcher. Rose singled in the first inning and again in the fifth inning to tie Ty Cobb with 4,191 career hits. Rose was retired in his other at-bats and the game was called because of darkness after nine innings with the score tied 5-5.

1993 - Darryl Kile pitched baseball's second no-hitter in five days, leading the Houston Astros over the New York Mets 7-1.

1998 - Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris' 37-year-old home run record, lining historic No. 62 just over the wall in left field with two outs in the fourth inning. McGwire's shot off the Chicago Cubs' Steve Trachsel set off a wild celebration in Busch Stadium.

2002 - The Atlanta Braves won their 11th straight division title when second-place Philadelphia lost to the New York Mets 6-4.

2007 - Alex Rodriguez homered in consecutive at-bats against rookie Brian Bannister to set a single-season record for a third baseman with 51 homers, helping the New York Yankees overpower Kansas City 11-5. He became the first Yankee to reach 50 homers in a season since Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle did it in 1961.

Today's birthdays: Gil Meche 30; Mike Rivera 32.
