        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers (-165, 8 1/2)

Hoping to follow up consecutive successful starts from CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets, Manny Parra looks to help the wild card-leading Brewers to a third straight victory as they conclude their four-game home set with the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon.

"We've got a lot of starting pitching where we can sustain winning streaks and stop losing streaks," Sheets told the Brewers' official Web site. Stellar work from the rotation has helped the Brewers overcome some weak hitting. They have failed to score more than three runs in any of their last four games, and five of their last six.

        The Padres are a major league-worst 16-34 when facing a left-handed starter.

The Brewers will try for an offensive resurgence while facing San Diego's Chris Young (4-5, 4.91), who makes his second start since coming off the disabled list due to a strained right forearm.Young, who hasn't won since May 16, allowed four runs and six hits in five innings of a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday - his first appearance since Aug. 10.

        Pick: Brewers

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants (-130, 8 1/2)

The San Francisco Giants likely will finish the season with their third straight losing record, but they at least have the chance to end a frustrating losing stretch against another struggling franchise. The Giants look to win their first home series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in more than five years Sunday when the two close a three-game set at AT&T Park.San Francisco (61-80) ended a seven-game home losing streak against Pittsburgh (60-81) on Saturday with a 7-6 win.

Pittsburgh and San Francisco have two of the worst records in the NL, and on Sunday, they each will send a struggling pitcher to the mound to close out this series.Jeff Karstens (2-4, 3.62 ERA) takes the ball for Pittsburgh. He has lost his last four starts and has a 6.04 ERA during that stretch, giving up six home runs over 22 1-3 innings.

Jonathan Sanchez (8-10, 4.50) is also in the middle of a rough stretch. He has lost his last five starts and six straight decisions. In his last five outings, he has a 6.31 ERA. He's pitched well in his last two outings, however. After giving up two runs in seven innings against Houston on Aug. 11, Sanchez went on the disabled list for a strained left shoulder and returned on Sept. 1 against the Rockies, allowing three runs and three hits in seven innings of a 4-0 loss. The Giants have scored just two runs over Sanchez's 25 2-3 innings of work during his last five starts.

        Pick: Under

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              SCOREBOARD

              Monday, Sept. 8

Tampa Bay at Boston (7:05 p.m. EDT). The Rays try to avoid a September meltdown against the team desperately trying to catch them in the AL East. Edwin Jackson (11-9, 4.07 ERA) takes the mound against Jon Lester (13-5, 3.37), who is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA against the Rays this season.

              STARS

              Saturday

-Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, homered three times at the top of Chicago's retooled batting order, and first-place Chicago emerged from its longest losing streak of the season with a 14-9 win over Cincinnati.

-Roy Oswalt, Astros, threw a one-hitter to help Houston beat Colorado 2-0. Oswalt struck out six, walked two and hit two batters.

-Ben Sheets, Brewers, pitched a five-hitter for his career-high 13th win and Milwaukee beat San Diego 1-0.

-Nelson Cruz, Rangers, hit two home runs, doubled, and drove in five runs to help Texas rout Boston 15-8.

-Jack Cust, Athletics, hit two home runs and drove in three runs in Oakland's 5-1 win over lowly Baltimore.

-Manny Ramirez, Dodgers, had a home run and five RBIs and Los Angeles took over first place in the NL West with a 7-2 win over Arizona.

              MATCHUP OF ACES

Ben Sheets pitched a five-hitter for his career-high 13th win and the Brewers beat the Padres and Jake Peavy 1-0. Sheets struck out seven in his fourth career shutout - third this season - and 18th career complete game. Sheets outpitched Peavy, who allowed a run and five hits with four walks in seven innings. It was just the third time this season in 25 starts that Peavy walked four or more batters.

              COORS GEM

Roy Oswalt threw a one-hitter to help the Astros beat the Rockies 2-0. He struck out six, walked two and hit two batters. It was the third time in Coors Field history that a pitcher threw a one-hitter or better. Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw a no hitter on Sept. 17, 1996, and Pat Rapp of the Florida Marlins threw a one-hitter on Sept. 17, 1995. Oswalt extended his scoreless innings streak to 23 1-3 over three starts. After a tough start to the season, Oswalt has been untouchable recently, going 8-1 with an 2.12 ERA in his last 11 starts.

              LINEUP SHAKE-UP

Sensing a need for change, Cubs manager Lou Piniella shook up the lineup, benching slumping All-Star right fielder Kosuke Fukudome and center fielder Jim Edmonds. He made the right choice by leaving Alfonso Soriano in the No. 1 spot even though he's been struggling as well. Soriano homered three times, and the first-place Cubs emerged from their longest losing streak, ending a six-game slide with a 14-9 win over the Reds.

              KNUCKLED UNDER

Tim Wakefield's knuckeball was fluttering out of the strike zone during the short time he pitched, an unmemorable performance in a milestone appearance. The Boston right-hander allowed seven runs in a span of nine batters in his 500th game for the Red Sox, a 15-8 loss at Texas. The 42-year-old Wakefield joined Bob Stanley (637 appearances) as the only players to pitch in 500 games for the Red Sox. Wakefield signed with Boston as a free agent in 1995, and has since started 363 games with 137 relief appearances.

              WRATH OF HANNA

Tropical Storm Hanna cost Oakland the opportunity to face the sagging Baltimore Orioles twice in a day, yet the Athletics still left town with their second winning streak since the All-Star break. Jack Cust hit two solo home runs, Greg Smith pitched seven shutout innings and Oakland handed the Orioles their eighth straight loss, 5-1. ... The Mets and Phillies had their afternoon game at Shea Stadium rained out as well, and will play a doubleheader on Sunday.

              WELCOME BACK

Evan Longoria was activated off the 15-day disabled list after the Tampa Bay slugger said he felt "almost 100 percent'' following 30 swings with a regular bat. Longoria, however, won't be returning to the lineup right away. Rays manager Joe Maddon wants the rookie third baseman to take two or three days of regular batting practice first, meaning Longoria likely will be available only as a defensive replacement until the Rays open a three-game series at New York on Friday.

              BLOWN SAVE

Francisco Rodriguez of the Angels blew a 6-5 advantage in a 7-6, 15-inning loss to the White Sox. Rodriguez blew his sixth save in 60 chances when pinch-hitter DeWayne Wise delivered a sacrifice fly. Rodriguez remained three saves shy of Bobby Thigpen's major league record of 57 set in 1990 for the White Sox.

              PASSING THE MANTLE

Jim Thome passed Mickey Mantle at the perfect time. Thome homered in the 15th inning to move ahead of Mantle on the career list and give the White Sox a 7-6 victory over the Angels that extended their AL Central lead. Thome's 537th home run came off Justin Speier and put him in sole possession of 14th place. "Those names, they're icon names,'' Thome said. "It's kind of surreal to be in a group of that many great players. You appreciate it but you have to move on. We're in a pennant race.''

              AILING

Orioles rookie reliever Jim Johnson is apparently done for the season with a shoulder injury. Pitching primarily in the eighth inning as a setup man for closer George Sherrill, Johnson was 2-4 with a 2.23 ERA and one save in 54 games. An MRI revealed that Johnson does not have a torn labrum. ... Rangers designated hitter Milton Bradley, second in the American League in hitting, was scratched from the starting lineup against Boston because of left wrist soreness. ... Ty Wigginton of the Astros strained his left groin running out a ground ball in the first inning against Colorado. Wigginton came out of the game and is listed as day-to-day.

              SPEAKING

"You're going to lose games like this. When you get into the playoffs, you're going to lose some tough games and you've got to come back tomorrow. That's why it's 162, that's why they call it a grind. Sometimes you get your heart broken for about 30 minutes, but you've got to put it back together, come back tomorrow and play another game and that's what we'll do.'' - Rays manager Joe Maddon after AL East-leading Tampa Bay fell to 1-4 this month with a 7-4, 13-inning loss to Toronto.

              SEASONS

              Sept. 7

1908 - Walter Johnson pitched his third consecutive shutout in four days with a 4-0, two-hit victory over the New York Highlanders.

1911 - Rookie Grover Cleveland Alexander of the Philadelphia Phillies took a 1-0 thriller from 44-year-old Cy Young, who was closing out his career with the Boston Braves.

1916 - The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-1 to start their 26-game winning streak, a major league record.

1923 - Howard Ehmke of the Boston Red Sox tossed a 4-0, no-hit victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Philadelphia's Slim Harriss hit a ball to the wall for a double, but was called out for missing first base, preserving the no-hitter.

1962 - Maury Wills of Los Angeles stole four bases and set a National League record with a total of 82 for the season. The Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the Mets struck out Ron Cey of the Chicago Cubs in the second inning for No. 228 to set a National League record for a rookie. Gooden passed Grover Cleveland Alexander, who set the mark with 227 in 1911. New York coasted to a 10-0 victory behind Gooden's one-hitter.

1993 - Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals had the greatest game at the plate in major league history in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Cincinnati. In the 15-2 win, Whiten hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs to become the only player to accomplish both feats in one game.

1998 - Ken Griffey Jr. homered twice against Baltimore, giving baseball three 50-homer players in a season for the first time. Griffey joined Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth as the only players to hit 50 or more in consecutive seasons. Ruth did it in 1920-21 and 1927-28, and McGwire hit 50 or more the last three years.

2001 - Alex Rodriguez broke his own American League record for homers by a shortstop with his career-best 43rd as Texas beat Kansas City 8-2.

2007 - Curtis Granderson hit his 20th home run in Detroit's 6-1 win over Seattle, making him only the sixth major league player since 1900 with at least 20 home runs, 20 doubles and 20 triples in one season.

2007 - Colorado used nine relievers after starter Elmer Dessens left with a strained left hamstring in the third inning of a 10-4 win over San Diego. The 10 total pitchers was a National League record for a nine-inning game.

Today's birthdays: Mark Prior 28; Brian Stokes 29; David Newhan 35; Jason Isringhausen 36.

                    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Dodgers won seventh straight game, finally moved into first place in NL West; they're so streaky; will it last?

-- Diamondbacks were outscored 24-5 in last three starts by Brandon Webb, who is said to have pulled rib cage muscle.

-- Alfonso Soriano hit three homers to help Cubs break out of their losing skid in Cincinnati.

-- Mets-Phillies will play day/night twinbill, the last two times they play each other this season, unless they tie for first in NL East-- Moyer/Hamels vs Martinez/Santana.

-- Twins are 2.5 games out of first place in AL Central; you think they wish they brought Liriano up start or two sooner?

-- If playoffs started Sunday at noon, playoff clubs would be
                    American League-- Rays-White Sox-Angels-Red Sox
                    National League-- Mets-Cubs-Dodgers-Brewers

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up college football Saturday

                      13) This is what happens when eggheads sit in a room and try to make rules for sports-- we get a great football game decided by a half-wit rule. I'm getting ahead of myself.........

BYU led Washington 28-21 in last minute; Huskies are driving down field. Sophomore QB Locker runs for TD with 0:02 left in game, yes two freakin' seconds left, a brilliant, 18-play drive to tie the game and maybe save his coach's job. he jumps up and flips the ball over his shoulders. Fans are going nuts, but......

                      12) The jackass referee follows the rulebook to a tee and gives Washington a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The extra point comes from 35, not 20 yards-- it is blocked and BYU gets a great road win. Fans get cheated out of overtime.

                      11) There has to be flexibility within the rules where common sense takes over and the rule book is set aside. Watch the tape on ESPN-- the kid scores, jumps up in joy, and flips the ball up over his shoulder-- he wasn't taunting anyone. Throwing flag there shows an absolute lack of common sense, but I'm sure the eggheds who made the rule are proud of themselves.

                      10) Kid named Gilyard on Cincinnati gained 365 yards in total offense in Norman against the Sooners, including a kick return for a TD. Too bad they lost QB Grutza for least a month after e broke his leg in fourth quarter. Oklahoma is very good- beating Bearcats 52-26 is a very good win.

                      9) So Ty Willingham gets hosed by officials on his home field, and now his 0-2 Huskies entertain Oklahoma Saturday. At 0-3, will be hard for Washington to get to a bowl; if Huskies don't go bowling, Willingham can pack his bags.

                      8) Speaking of coaches who will be changing addresses next season; Akron 42, Syracuse 28-- so long, Greg Robinson. The home opener at Carrier Dome drew just 31,808 fans.

                      7) Alabama had major letdown after the Clemson win; they got outgained 318-172 by Tulane, but used pair of special teams TDs in first quarter to hold off Green Wave 20-6. Tulane's kids spent week in Mobile, to avoid the storms in Louisiana.

                      6) Oklahoma State trailed 16-14 at half, then scored forty points in second half, as Mike Gundy's Cowboys ("I'm a man, I'm 40!!) improved to 2-0. Big 12 is off to a strong start this season.

                      5) Wake Forest-Ole Miss was terrific game between two good teams, with Wake winning 30-28 on last-second FG. I've said this before, but it bears repeating. Wake Forest's Jim Grobe is the best college football coach in America. Lets see one of the bigshot coaches go to Winston Salem and win games. Wake is one of the smallest schools that plays big-time football.

                      4) South Florida survived major minefield last night, winning at Central Florida in OT, after drilling Knights 64-12 last year. It was last game between two schools that are roughly an hour away from each other. USF added Miami to their schedule.

                      3) Colorado trailed I-AA Eastern Washington 21-7 at the half, but rallied to win 31-24. Colorado State kicked last minute FG to escape Sacramento State. Army lost 28-10 to New Hampshire.

                      2) Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Rice are all 2-0.

                      1) Rice handed Memphis one of worst losses I've ever seen; trailing 35-27 with 1:30 left, Owls scored TD, got the two points to tie game. Tigers then drove into Rice territory, but tossed an interception that was run back 69 yards for winning TD with a mere 0:14 left. Very difficult loss for Memphis to swallow.
