The Phillies are 6-1 in Myers’ last seven overall and are 4-1 in his last five road starts against the Mets.

Millwood has just one loss in his last five starts and is 3-0 and has a solid 1.46 ERA in his last three overall.

Jurrjens is 0-3 in his last four at home and is 0-1 against the Washington Nationals. In his last home start, he surrendered six earned runs and one homer in three IP.

      SCOREBOARD

      Friday, Sept. 5

San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers (8:05 p.m. EDT). CC Sabathia looks to improve to 10-0 with Milwaukee as they host San Diego. He pitched a one-hitter in his last start and already has six complete games.

      - James Parr, Braves, tossed six sharp innings in his major league debut and gave up just two hits in a 2-0 win over Washington.

      - Joey Votto, Reds, hit a solo homer and a tiebreaking, bases-loaded single in the eighth inning, completing the Reds' rally from a five-run deficit to an 8-6 victory over the Pirates.

      - Scott Kazmir, Rays, gave up just one hit in six shutout innings of Tampa Bay's 7-5 win over the Yankees.

      - Jesse Litsch, Blue Jays, pitched a four-hit shutout to help Toronto complete a three-game sweep of Minnesota.

      SAVIOR

Mike Gonzalez got his ninth save of the season in Atlanta's 2-0 win over Washington. He has converted all of his save opportunities this season and 39 straight overall, the longest current streak in the major leagues, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He has not blown a save since June 25, 2004, for Pittsburgh at Cincinnati.

      SLASHING PRICES

The Washington Nationals, who rank in the bottom half of Major League Baseball in attendance despite a new ballpark, are lowering some of their season ticket prices for next season. Prices will go down for 7,500 seats in the 41,888-seat Nationals Park, mostly in the outfield sections. Seats in most of the discounted sections will cost $5 to $10 less per game, lowering the stadium's average season ticket price for a non-premium seat to approximately $29.

      SUDDEN PASSING

Todd Cruz, an infielder with the 1983 world champion Baltimore Orioles, has died. He was 52. Cruz died Tuesday while swimming at the apartment complex in which he lived in Bullhead City, Ariz. The cause of death is pending results of an autopsy.

      SPEAKING

"I think it might have been the farthest one I've seen here. I truly do. That was zero gravity right there.'' - Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon on Alex Rodriguez's 436-foot homer on Thursday night that struck one of the catwalks that support the roof at Tropicana Field.

Major League Baseball – Hot lines

          MLB

          Friday, September 5

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Hot lines: Today’s MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers (+120, 10 1/2)

Josh Beckett is expected to headline a list of returning Red Sox as the defending World Series champions go for a ninth straight victory over the host Texas Rangers .

Beckett (11-9, 4.34 ERA) hasn't pitched since Aug. 17, when he allowed eight runs in 2 1-3 innings of a 15-4 loss to Toronto. His arm and elbow problems even prompted a trip to Alabama to visit Dr. James Andrews last Friday.

Boston scored 37 runs in a three-game sweep of Texas at Fenway Park from Aug. 12-14, with the memorable opener a 19-17 win for the Red Sox that came after they blew a 10-0 first-inning lead.

Runs may not be quite as easy to come by against a red-hot Kevin Millwood (9-7, 4.84) on Friday. The right-hander has won three straight starts, following a pair of complete games by allowing two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-3 win over the Angels on Sunday.

Millwood tossed six shutout innings against Boston on April 20 before giving up two runs in the seventh of a game the Red Sox came back to win, 6-5. He's 4-3 with a 4.05 ERA in 11 career starts against them.

          Pick: Under

Florida Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals (-115, 9)

The Marlins and Cardinals were surprise contenders at the All-Star break. Mediocre play in the second half, however, has both clubs in danger of falling out of the postseason chase.

Florida managed to salvage a series win by defeating Atlanta 5-3 on Wednesday. All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs, and is 6-for-20 (.300) with nine walks and a .517 on-base percentage in his last six games.

The Marlins have to like their chances with Ricky Nolasco (13-7, 3.65 ERA) taking the mound Friday. They're 15-5 in the right-hander's last 20 starts, with Nolasco going 11-4 with a 3.18 ERA in those games.

He allowed three runs while striking out eight in six innings of Florida's 4-3 victory over New York on Saturday.

"Any time you get a pitcher that gets on that kind of a roll, there is a tremendous amount of confidence that you build from that," left-hander Scott Olsen said.

"It feeds to everybody. It just makes him better. It makes all the guys behind him better. It gives an extra step to everybody's jump. What he's done over the course of this 2 1/2, three-month period is unbelievable."

          Pick: Marlins

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

            MLB

            Updated

            Friday, September 5

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers [NESN | 8:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-140, O/U 10.5): After winning two straight games, Josh Beckett was blasted in his last start versus Toronto, allowing eight runs in just 2.1 innings of work. It’s the second time in four starts that Beckett has allowed eight runs. This will be Beckett’s first start since coming off the DL with right elbow inflammation. Beckett is just 6-5 on the road this season but he does posses a strong 3.17 ERA away from Fenway Park. The OVER is 3-1 in Beckett’s last four starts.

Red Sox are 8-1 in Beckett’s last 9 road starts vs. a team with a losing record.
Red Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 games vs. the AL West.

Key Injuries - 3B Mike Lowell (oblique) is questionable.
1B Kevin Youkilis (back) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Rangers: Kevin Millwood is currently riding a three-game winning streak where he’s allowed just four runs in 24.2 innings. Two of those starts were complete game gems where Millwood allowed just one run in each outing. Millwood is 4-3 in his career against Boston with a 4.05 ERA in 11 starts. Millwood is 5-2 at home this season, although his ERA is close to 5.00. The UNDER has cashed in each of Millwood’s last two starts.

Rangers are 1-7 in their last 8 during Game 1 of a series.
The UNDER is 5-1 in Texas' last 6 games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers [ESPN | 10:05 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: Dan Haren is having a strong season for the Diamondbacks but he’s been average over his last five starts, allowing 20 runs in 32.1 innings of work. Haren has pitched well on the road this year. Although he’s just 4-3 away from home, his ERA is a stellar 2.93. Haren was hit pretty hard in his last outing against the Dodgers, taking the loss after giving up 10 hits and five runs over six innings. The OVER is 5-2-1 in Haren’s last eight starts.

Diamondbacks are 4-0 in their last 4 games following a day off.
The OVER is 7-1 in Arizona's last 8 games.

Key Injuries - OF Justin Upton (oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-130, O/U 7): Derek Lowe has really found his groove in his last five starts, allowing just seven runs in 33.1 innings pitched. Lowe is a much different pitcher at home than he is on the road. At Dodger Stadium, Lowe is 8-5 with a stellar 2.64 ERA. Lowe has struggled in his career versus the Diamondbacks going 5-7 with a 4.01 ERA. The UNDER has cashed three of the last four times Lowe has taken the mound.

Dodgers are 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter.
Dodgers are 4-1 in Lowe’s last 5 starts vs. Arizona.

Key Injuries - OF Juan Pierre (back) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                      Previews and Picks
                      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Friday, September 5

Calgary Stampeders (5-4) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-3) (Edmonton -3 1/2)

The Eskimos, after nine games, show better numbers than the Stampeders in numerous fields: more points scored, fewer points against, total passing yards, pass defense and they are now aiming at first place in the wild west.

Danny Maciocia’s team is arguably the most improved team in the CFL since the start of the season. The Eskimos also won their last two showdowns against Calgary, the latest one a 37-16 win last Monday.

Henry Burris suffered a toe injury and could watch Friday’s game from the sidelines, in which case Dave Dickenson would be the starting QB. For Edmonton, Ricky Ray, who has ripped Calgary’s secondary more than once, will try to lead his team to a third consecutive win.

                      Pick: Edmonton

                      Saturday, September 6

                      B.C. Lions (4-5) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-7) (B.C. -4 1/2)

It will be family day in Hamilton in a battle of the felines. The Lions have won their last seven games against the Tiger-Cats and it should be eight consecutive after this matchup.

Casey Printers seems to have secured the No. 1 spot at QB for Hamilton. Last week against the Argos, he ran for two touchdowns in a 34-31 loss to Toronto but completed only 12 of 22 pass attempts and 161 yards.

In any case, Printers should not be the No. 1 worry for Hamilton. For the first time this season, they will have their hands full trying to stop the run. Stefan Logan is exceptionally fast and could give the Ti-Cats some of their own medicine after Hammertown’s Jesse Lumsden has helped the Tabbies become one of the best rushing squads in the CFL.

But the B.C Lions, who turned the ball over five times last week in a 30-25 loss to the Alouettes, will have to show more consistency and avoid costly mistakes.

                      Pick: B.C.

                      Sunday, September 7

Toronto Argonauts (4-5) at Montreal Alouettes (6-3) (Alouettes -6 1/2)

The Alouettes will likely be without star running back Avon Cobourne who nurses an ankle injury. Mike Imoh is expected to replace him but the running game probably won’t be as efficient without Cobourne.

The good news for Montreal is that Toronto’s rush defense is not one of the strongest in the CFL. Last time those two teams met, the Alouettes won 32-14. But Kerry Joseph seems more at ease since the departure of Michael Bishop and last week against Hamilton, he threw for 399 yards.

Arland Bruce caught 10 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown in a very close 34-31 win against the Tiger-Cats. Dominique Dorsey also had a great game, gaining 74 yards off two kickoff returns, another 105 yards on two pass receptions and 25 yards on six rushes.

The Alouettes are on a four-game winning streak after beating the Lions 30-25 in Week 10. They should pick up a fifth win in a row against the Argos but it will be much closer than the spread indicates.

                      Pick: Toronto

Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-2) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-7) (No line yet)

Everything seems to point towards a Saskatchewan win in this matchup but let’s not forget that in Regina last Sunday, the Roughriders won a defensive showdown against those same Blue Bombers, 19-6.

The Roughriders defensive front has been successful putting pressure on Winnipeg’s quarterback Kevin Glenn, who never got comfortable in the pocket. But offensively, quarterback Michael Bishop - recently traded by Toronto - completed only 10 passes for Saskatchewan, gaining 107 yards passing and 51 yards running.

Winnipeg’s injury list is finally shrinking and center Dominic Picard, who suffered an ankle injury early in the season, is now listed as probable. For the Riders, quarterback Darian Durant won’t play, still bothered by a rib injury and Bishop will get another start.

                      Pick: Saskatchewan
