Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

    MLB

    Tuesday, September 2

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Streaking Starting Pitchers
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tuesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

    Streaking

Glen Perkins, Minnesota Twins (12-3, 3.96)

Perkins is on some kind of roll. He has taken just one personal loss since June 4.

The rookie isn't an overpowering starter with just 63 strikeouts in a little over 130 innings, but has solid command of the strike zone.

Perkins ranks 11th in MLB money standings, having earning more than nine units for bettors on the year.

    Slumping

    Joe Saunders, L.A. Angels (14-7, 3.67)

All-Star Joe Saunders ripped through the end of July and the first part of August, helping the Angels to wins in five straight outings. However, since then he's allowed 15 runs over his last three starts ? all Los Angeles losses.

Saunders took a comebacker off his pitching hand in his last start, but says his hand is fine.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-125, 8 1/2)

Matt Garza might be the most frustrating pitcher in the big leagues. He's lights out one start and equally unimpressive the following outing. The guy is the Paris Hilton of my fantasy league; as in he's dropped and picked up more often than the Hilton Hotels heir. If you don't believe me just take a look at his last 10 starts and you'll see the yo-yo effect I'm jabbering about.

The playoffs are no more than a pipe dream for the Yanks but there's a lot of pride in the veteran locker room. Look for Mike Mussina to continue his turn-the-clock-back year with another quality start.

          Pick: Yankees

New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers (-140, 9 1/2)

I understand this will be Jonathon Niese's first major-league appearance, but the Mets are playing so well right now Jerry Manuel could send Pee-wee Herman to the mound and I'd still back New York. The Mets brass think highly of young Niese and I'm always inclined to give the benefit to pitchers rather than batters in the first meeting.

Carlos Delgado continues to mash the ball. His late-inning dinger catapulted New York to a 4-2 win. The homer was Delgado's 20 since June 27, more than any other player during the time span.

"Carlos has been amazing," Manuel said after last night's victory. "If he's swinging it well, he seems to come up at the right time and put a good swing on it. He's been outstanding."

          Pick: Mets

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [YES | 7:10 PM ET]

Yankees: Mike Mussina hasn’t lost since July 28, going 3-0 with three no-decisions over that stretch. Mussina is coming off a strong effort against the Red Sox, allowing just two runs over seven innings. Moose has been remarkable on the road this season, compiling a record of 6-1 to go along with a strong 3.34 ERA. The OVER is 5-2 in Mussina’s last seven starts.

The Yankees are 8-1 in Mussina’s last 9 road starts.
The Yankees are 8-2 in Mussina’s last 10 starts against the Rays.

Key Injuries - SP Joba Chamberlain (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Rays (-120, O/U 8.5): Matt Garza hasn’t allowed a run in two of his last three starts. In wins over Toronto and Texas, Garza pitched 16 scoreless innings. Garza has been extremely tough to beat at Tropicana Field where he’s 7-2 with an impressive 2.47 ERA. Garza dominated the Yankees the last time he faced them, pitching seven innings of scoreless ball.

Tampa Bay is 23-7 in its last 30 games.
The Rays are 4-1 in their last 5 series openers.

Key Injuries - OF Carl Crawford (hand) is on the 15-day DL.
3B Evan Longoria (wrist) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Mets: Jon Niese makes his first career start tonight, filling in for the injured John Maine. Niese was called up from Triple-A New Orleans, where he was 5-1 with an ERA of 3.40 in seven starts. The Mets have high hopes for Niese. "We think very highly of Jonathan Niese," VP for Development Tony Bernazard said Sunday. "He's a 21-year-old that we expect to be an important member of this organization.”

The Mets are 10-3 in their last 13 road games.
The Mets are 10-4 in their last 14 games at Milwaukee.

Key Injuries - C Ramon Castro (ankle) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Brewers (-145, O/U 9.5): Manny Parra takes to the mound tonight for the Brewers in the midst of a slump. In his last seven starts, Parra is 1-4 with two no-decisions. However, Parra has been strong at home this season, going 6-2 with an ERA of 3.36. In his one career start versus the Mets, Parra allowed three runs in just four innings of work. The UNDER is 3-0 in Parra’s last three starts.

The Brewers are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. the NL East.
The UNDER is 10-4-2 in the Brewers last 16 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - 2B Ray Durham (shoulder) is day-to-day.
3B Russell Branyan (oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 8:05 PM ET]

Astros: Brandon Backe has pitched well over the last month, winning three of his last four starts. In those three wins, Backe has only given up six runs in 19.1 innings of work. For Backe to continue his hot streak, he’ll need to pitch much better on the road tonight that he has so far this year where he’s just 4-7. Backe hasn’t had much success against the Cubs, sporting a 6.60 ERA in eight starts.

The Astros are 5-0 in their last 5 vs. the NL Central.
The OVER is 9-4 in Houston’s last 13 road games.

Key Injuries - 2B Kaz Matsui (back) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Carlos Lee (finger) in on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cubs (-200, O/U NA): Carlos Zambrano was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday with a tired arm. That may be the reason why Zambrano hasn’t been himself lately. In this last four starts, Zambrano has allowed an alarming 21 runs over 21.2 innings. Big Z hasn’t had much trouble at Wrigley Field this year, going 7-1 with a 2.96 ERA. The OVER is 4-1 in Zambrano’s last five starts.

The Cubs are 4-0 in Zambrano’s last 4 home starts against the Astros.
The UNDER is 17-5 in Zambrano’s last 22 starts against the Astros.

Key Injuries - SP Jon Lieber (foot) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 5
