    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, September 1

Johan Santana and Ben Sheets will both be laboring for a win Monday afternoon when the Milwaukee Brewers host the New York Mets. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

The Mets and Brewers will kick off a three-game series in Milwaukee at 2:05pm ET on Monday with a battle of staff aces. Johan Santana (12-7, 2.70 ERA) will take the mound for New York, while Ben Sheets (12-7, 3.05 ERA) will get the start for Milwaukee.

Santana hasn't been tagged with a loss since June 28, when he was beaten in an interleague matchup with the Yankees. The Mets are 8-2 in the lefthander's last 10 trips to the mound, and they've picked up the victory in each of his last five starts. Last time out, against the Phillies, Santana gave up three earned runs over his six innings.

Sheets is coming off a six-inning shutout performance against the Cardinals in which he gave up just five hits and fanned four batters. The righthander, though, has been tagged with a loss in four of his past six starts, and the Brewers have won just five of his past 10 outings. Sheets picked up a win versus the Mets in an outing back on April 12.

    Non-event of the day . . .

We don't want to keep picking on the WNBA by including them in this space every day, so we won't mention the Minnesota/Los Angeles matchup at 10:30pm ET here. Instead, we'll pick the Mariners/Rangers contest down in Texas, which will feature an uninspiring pitching duel of Carlos Silva (4-14, 6.36 ERA) versus Matt Harrison (6-3, 5.67 ERA).

    Also on the schedule . . .

There are only three other American League games on the schedule for Monday, with the Yankees at Detroit, Baltimore at Boston, and the White Sox at Cleveland. Cliff Lee (19-2, 2.43 ERA) will get a shot at his 20th victory of the campaign in that last game.

Over in the NL there are six more games on tap for the holiday Monday, starting with Atlanta at Florida at 1:10pm ET. Also on the schedule: San Francisco at Colorado, Philadelphia at Washington, Houston at the Cubs, St. Louis at Arizona, and San Diego at the Dodgers. Chris Young (4-4, 4.74 ERA) is expected to return for the Padres.

Finally, there are four football games on Monday's schedule. The CFL stages its annual Labour Day doubleheader with Edmonton at Calgary (-5), and Toronto at Hamilton (-3). Meanwhile, college football concludes its opening week of action with two contests: Fresno State at Rutgers (-4), and Tennessee (-7) at UCLA.

    News from the wire . . .

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson (concussion) is still questionable to play in the team's opener this week . . . Quarterback Chris Simms was cut by the Buccaneers and could end up in Baltimore . . . Kurt Warner was named the Cardinals' starting QB over Matt Leinart . . . the Bengals cut running back Rudi Johnson over the weekend.

    Peek at the future . . .

The PGA Tour's Deutsche Bank Championship concludes on Monday, and its next event (the BMW Championship at Bellerive) gets underway on Thursday . . . the Yankees and Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.41 ERA) will begin a series against Matt Garza (11-7, 3.53 ERA) and the Rays on Tuesday night . . . the National Football League season kicks off on Thursday with the Redskins taking on the Giants (-3.5) in New York.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- At some point, doesn't ESPN have to give the Rays some exposure on a Sunday night? Don't they?

-- Someone has to explain to me why ten teams were given Labor Day off; makeup game cuts the number to eight. Why?

-- Was in restaurant Sunday night; place had 8-10 TVs, and none of them, repeat none, were on the baseball game. More than half were on the NASCAR race. Go figure.

-- Kudos to Washington Nationals, who went 6-0 this week. It ain't easy getting off the mat and playing good ball.

-- Mets are bringing nine guys up today, when rosters can be expanded to 40. Not many teams ever bring that many up.

-- I get the feeling when October rolls around, FOX, ESPN are still going to have reporters in the Bronx, just in case.......

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

        13) Wonder which network will sign Derek Jeter to work in the studio for the first round of the baseball playoffs?

        12) Rays drew 32,379 Sunday; they're now 17-1 at home when they have a crowd of 30,000+.

        11) On Labor Day, the Rays are idle; they have a 5.5 game lead in the AL East. Despite national media's refusal to cover this story, it is baseball's best story since the '69 Mets. Wake up!!!

        10) 21 of 30 starting pitchers threw at least 100 pitches Sunday. 10 of those 21 finished the 7th inning.

        9) Brandon Webb, who pulled rib cage muscle two starts ago was only starter not to finish fifth inning. All 30 starters threw at least 80 pitches. 26 of the 30 got either a win or a loss.

        8) I am amused by Bronx Bomber fans blaming ARod for team's failures; like he's the reason the team struggles. Yeah, right.

        7) For some reason, ESPN ran Cleveland Browns' injury report 4,000 times on the bottom of their screen Sunday; does anyone in Bristol actually watch their own network?

        6) Why are the Giants going with only two QBs, when one of them is the God-awful David Carr? Thats asking for trouble.

        5) Looks like when the next NFL TV contract rolls around, the preseason will be two games, and regular season will be either 17 or 18 games. I prefer 18; don't like odd numbers.

        4) Jeff Kent hurt his knee, might be out for the year. Dodgers are an odd club; don't understand why they're not better.

        3) I believe Tampa Bay is 24-3 at home if Shields/Kazmir start.

        2) An Arizona-Tampa Bay World Series would serve Bud Selig right. By not promoting all thirty teams, he is burying his own sport. NASCAR is becoming more popular than baseball.

        1) Yesterday was the last Sunday until late January without pro football on TV. Let the games begin.

                -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Monday, September 1

Edmonton Eskimos (5-3) at Calgary Stampeders (5-3) (Calgary by 5.5)

This has all the ingredients to be THE game to watch on Labour Day! These great Albertan rivals both have a 5-3 record and score around 30 points a game. Both teams average more than 300 passing yards a game, although Calgary has fared better running the ball and shutting off the opponents rushing, which actually is not strength on Edmonton's side. Ricky Ray will need a strong performance to prove the Eskimos should be treated seriously as contenders for the Western division championship, but it will be a huge challenge against Calgary's defensive squad, especially if their forced to rely only on their passing game. This being said, I would not recommend taking the Stampeders with a 5.5 points margin. Expect a shootout that will be resolved by less than three points.

                Pick: Edmonton (+3)

Toronto Argonauts ( ) at Hamilton Tiger Cats ( ) (Hamilton by 3)

Kerry Joseph won't have the responsibility of calling the Argos offensive plays and that should be good news for Toronto fans. But it also shows the lack of leadership of Joseph who felt distracted by play-calling! In fact, one gets to wonder if anybody has leadership in the Argos dressing room. CFL's outstanding player last season has struggled so far in 2008, completing only 56.4 per cent of his passes and throwing six interceptions and only 4 touchdown passes! The Argonauts loss to Montreal in week 8, 32-14 and parted earlier this week with backup QB Michael Bishop, traded to Saskatchewan. It was the second consecutive loss for Toronto. The Tiger Cats lost their last game 37-24 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers but, if you compare stats, they score more points a game than the Argos and have a stronger running game led by Jesse Lumsden.

                Pick: Hamilton (-3)

                  ATS Previews

                  CFL ATS Previews Week 10

One of the best kept secrets in football is the CFL Labor Day Classic games, as these are the Canadian Football League's most popular double-header matches of the year and they carry many memories to long living CFL fans. Week 10 will kick off in Montreal with the Lions travelling to face the surging Alouettes. On Sunday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers travel to Mosaaic Stadium for a showdown with the first place Roughriders. Then on Labor Day Monday, the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders will headline the Game of the Week; as both teams are 5-3 SU and depending on the Roughriders outcome on Sunday, could be sharing the top spot in the west with Saskatchewan. Finally, the other game on Monday is the showdown in Steel town, the 3-5 SU Argonauts travel down the QEW to face the 2-6 SU Tiger Cats. Both games on Monday will have plenty of energy in the stands and should deliver great memories. Enjoy the Classic CFL fans!

                  Monday, September 1

                  Edmonton (57) vs. Calgary (-5.5)

Eskimos at Stampeders History: The Eskimos are 9-14-0 (ATS), 10-13 (SU) and the O/U is 8-15-0 since 1996 in Calgary.

What a great way to start the Labor Day classics with a good old fashion shootout at the Calgary "ok coral"! The Eskimos and Stampeders could switch players and you wouldn't know the difference, that's how identical these two Alberta teams have been this season. Both teams are 5-3 SU on the season and both are averaging 32 Points For on offense this year. However, the Stampeders have been the better defensive team and the kicking game is pretty much a coin toss too with DeAngelis and Prefontaine having great seasons! Edmonton is coming off a nice butt kicking last week, as they smoked the Roughriders 27-10 at home, but when an away underdog has allowed 10 points or less in their last game, they are only 19-35 SU in their next game. Therefore, this will be a big statement game for Ricky Ray and the Eskimos to prove they are true contenders of the Western Division and look for Henry Burris to outshine Ricky Ray on Monday. Calgary is coming of an emotional road win in BC, where they scored in the last minute of the game to steal a win. The last two games for the Stamps have gone OVER the total and expect another sell out at McMahon Stadium in this "Battle of Alberta" on Monday. Another betting angle that supports the Stampeders; the Eskimos are only 4-11 SU as a +3.5 to +6.5 point underdog vs. a division foe and they are coming off a division opponent. Plus, here's a CFL trend that goes back to 1996 that supports the Stamps this week; when any CFL team is a Home Favorite during a Monday game in September, they are 12-3 SU in this betting spot. I see this being a classic shootout game, but Calgary and the home crowd goes home happy! But not ATS Happy?

                  forecast: Calgary 31 Edmonton 30

Stat of the Game: When ANY CFL Team played as Home team as a Favorite -During the month of September -Before a conference game -During Week 8 to 12 - Allowed scored 30 points or less against; The Home Fave is 10-2 SU in this position since '96.

                  Toronto (54.5) vs. Hamilton (-3)

Argonauts vs. Tiger Cats History: The Argos are 11-11-1 (ATS), 12-10-1 (SU) and the O/U is 10-13-0 since 1996 in Hamilton.

Well, this is too easy to start ripping the Argos and where they went wrong from training camp to where they are at today. If anything, I'm very disappointed in Michael "Pinball" Clemons for letting Rich Stubbler take most of the heat for the Argos struggle this season. Let's focus on the main reason why the Argos are in this 3-5 SU situation and it starts with leadership. Who is the leader on this team? The defense is getting old, some veteran players don't have the football speed to attack the holes, and they can't establish a running game on offense and nobody knows for sure who?s calling the offense. I'm a handicapper and I can see this from my living room, which makes me wonder what the hell they do all week in practice? The Bishop thing was a given and should have been rectified weeks ago, but you can't be averaging 18 Points For on offense and expect to win football games in a pass happy league like the CFL. The Argos are coming off a 32-14 lost to Montreal and they'll be facing a Hamilton team who are loose, but will be keeping a close eye on Casey Printers who's coming back from a thumb injury. I think this is a marketing move by the Tiger Cats, because Richie Williams is the real deal and I haven't seen a Tiger Cats offense score so many points in 3 consecutive games since the Danny Mac days. Hamilton has been averaging 34 points per game in their last 3 outings, but they still need to find a way to tighten it up on defense, because 32.67 Points Against in their last 3 games is the main reason why they are not 3-0 in their last 3 games. Well, when it rain it pours as they say and here's more ammunition for the media to beat up Toronto; the Argos are in a horrible position on Monday, they are 1-11 SU as a Road Underdog vs. division foes during Week 8-12 of a CFL season. Hamilton on the other hand are perfect in September as a home favorite during week 8 to 10; like 9-0-1 SU perfect since '96. The bookmakers have this number right, I like the Tabbies to win by a field goal!

                  forecast: Hamilton 27 Toronto 24

Stat of the Game: When ANY CFL team played as Road team as a Underdog -During the month of September - Allowed score 31 points or more against; The Road Dog is 8-25 SU in this role since 1996.

                      SCOREBOARD

                      Monday, Sept. 1

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland (7:05 p.m. EDT) John Danks (10-7, 3.30 ERA) tries to keep the White Sox atop the AL Central while surprising Cy Young candidate Cliff Lee (19-2, 2.43) tries to become the first 20-game winner in the American League.

                      STARS

                      Sunday

-CC Sabathia, Brewers, pitched a one-hitter in his latest dominant start, allowing only an infield single by Andy LaRoche in the fifth inning of a 7-0 victory over Pittsburgh.

-Aaron Boone, Nationals, failed to lay down a sacrifice, then slammed a three-run, eighth-inning home run to lift Washington to its season-high sixth straight win, 8-4 over the Braves.

-Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, homered and drove in four runs in a 4-2 win over Kansas City.

-Joey Votto, Reds, went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, helping Cincinnati beat San Francisco 9-3 to complete its first three-game sweep of the Giants at home in 14 years.

-Adrian Beltre, Mariners, homered twice in a 6-4 win over Cleveland that finished a sweep.

                      NO NO-HITTER

CC Sabathia limited the Pirates to Andy LaRoche's infield single leading off the fifth inning, on a play Milwaukee manager Ned Yost argued was an error on the pitcher, and the Brewers beat Pittsburgh 7-0 for their eighth victory in nine games. The Brewers said they plan to send a DVD of the play to Major League Baseball, asking that the call be overturned. However, according to baseball's rulebook, only the official scorer may change a judgment scoring call.

                      NO HALLADAY FOR YANKEES

Roy Halladay became the first pitcher to beat the New York Yankees four times in a season since Chuck Finley went 4-0 for the Angels in 1996. He improved to 4-1 with a 2.50 ERA in five starts against the Yankees this season. He won twice in the Bronx, making a few lasting memories before New York moves into its new ballpark next year.

                      FATIGUED

Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano was scratched from his start against the Philadelphia Phillies to give him some time to rest his tired arm. A 13-game winner this season, Zambrano is 1-1 over his last five starts and twice failed to get out of the fifth inning. He has seen a drop-off at times in his velocity. Leading the NL Central and with the best record in the majors, the Cubs want a fresh Zambrano for the final month. He went through a similar episode a year ago when he was winless in August before rebounding to go 4-1 in his final five regular-season starts.

                      TRADED

David Eckstein was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving the NL West leaders a late-season spark plug with impressive October credentials. The 2006 World Series MVP with St. Louis, Eckstein batted .277 with a homer and 23 RBIs for Toronto. Known for his all-out hustle, the 5-foot-7 infielder also helped the Angels win the 2002 World Series.

                      SHELLACKED

Arizona starter Brandon Webb failed in his second bid to become the majors' first 20-game winner. Unable to command his fastball and sinker, Webb allowed six earned runs, eight hits and five walks in 3 1-3 innings, matching his shortest outing of the season.

                      STATS

Jose Valverde picked up his 37th save in 43 chances for the Astros. He has recorded saves in each of his last 10 appearances, the longest streak in the NL this season and a club single-season club record. ... Minnesota's Justin Morneau homered and drove in four runs to become the ninth Twins player since 1961 to reach 500 RBIs for his career.

                      SPEAKING

"To tie Mickey Mantle, you're speechless. What do you say? It's really hard to talk about because when you throw Mickey Mantle's name around. That's probably one of the greatest home run hitters of all time.'' - White Sox slugger Jim Thome, after tying Mantle for 14th place on the career home run list in Chicago's 4-2 win over Boston.

                      SEASONS

In his last road start, a triumph over the Cincinnati Reds, he surrendered just one earned and struck out six in eight IP.

                            Slumping

Sanchez is 0-3 in his last three road starts, including a recent setback to the Houston Astros in which he conceded two earned runs on five hits. He is 2-4 and has a 4.26 ERA on the road this season.
