Fresno is located in the San Joaquin Valley in central Calif. The area is pretty vast and spands between Bakersfield and Modesto. Fresno's coach Pat Hill prides himself that he recruits hard from the Valley and doesn't want to lose any valley players. Good players have come from the valley, like Tim Mcdonald, and Fresno used to lose a lot of those players. So they put a 'V' on the helmets to remind everyone that they are valley strong. Helps with attendance and gives a sense of pride in that the team is recruiting locally.

It is something Pat Hill started in 1997 when he became head coach there. He wanted to "paint the valley"...
