                  Best games of 2008

                  Saturday

Utah is set with Brian Johnson under center. Michigan? We'll find out at some point.

Missouri vs. Illinois (in St. Louis): If I were a betting man -- and I'm not -- I'd be all over the Illini taking the nine points. But if I were -- and, again, I'm not -- I'd call this guy named Vinnie who people tell me handle bets like this. Point is, don't discount Illinois in what could easily be a mini upset. Juice Williams is better, Illinois is more athletic and revenge is a huge motivator. Vinnie is standing by to take your action.

Clemson vs. Alabama (in Atlanta): Just what Clemson needs, the evil mojo cast upon them by Randall Burcham. The 24-year-old from Hoover, Ala. has been going to 'Bama games since he was 11. He has calculated that when he is there, the Tide have an eight percent better chance of winning.

Utah at Michigan: Here's the thing, Michigan. Utah is the better team, Michigan is the better program. But this is about building something. The Utes start their BCS bowl quest this day, Michigan starts its any-bowl-at-all quest. Rich Rodriguez could not work out a late trade this week for Utah's Brian Johnson. He will have to play one of his quarterbacks.

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn: What's this doing in here? Considering the Warhawks are playing half the SEC (ok, only three teams) and won in T-town last year, we're figuring a little armpit sweat for Auburn couldn't hurt.

                  Monday

Tennessee at UCLA: Don't want to hear anything about Tennessee playing a weak schedule. Since 2003, Phil Fulmer has taken on Fresno, Notre Dame (twice) and Cal (twice). This time the wounded Bruins are going to be easy pickings for the Vols.

                  Sept. 6

Miami at Florida:Assuming there are no more suspensions, Miami quarterback Robert Marve makes his debut by being thrown to the Gators. By "thrown", we mean Florida hasn't beaten Miami since 1985. That's a lot of payback being stored up. BYU at Washington: Great, just great. Ty Willingham starts the season playing three ranked opponents (Oregon in the opener, Oklahoma after BYU). Hopefully, Jake Locker remains healthy enough to make it close.

                  Sept. 12

Kansas at South Florida: Ask West Virginia how it enjoyed Friday night in Tampa last season. Mark Mangino would like to remind you that last season KU won at Kansas State, Colorado, Texas A&M and beat Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. What's so tough about going to South Florida? For one, there are two new offensive tackles for KU. George Selvie is drooling.

                  Sept. 13

Chris 'Beanie' Wells leads the Buckeyes into L.A. to face the Trojans.

Ohio State at USC: The last time these teams met, the game was called because of a thunderstorm (at Ohio State, 1990). Ohio State meteorologists are working on a plan to seed clouds to South Central. USC has lost exactly one home game since 2002.

Michigan at Notre Dame: Here's a good to tell your bros over beers fact: The last time Michigan lost this game, Notre Dame was ranked. That was 2005, not 1995. It just seems that way.

Wisconsin at Fresno State: Fresno's only Big Ten victory is over Wisconsin (2001). That was the year the Bulldogs took a run at a BCS bowl. Repeat?

UCLA at BYU: Third meeting in 368 days. The teams split two games last year. The Bruins snapped an 11-game BYU winning streak in the first meeting. The streak will be 12 going in this year if the Cougars win their first two.

Georgia at South Carolina: So you want to be No. 1? Mark Richt hopes this season's SEC opener turns out better. South Carolina held Georgia's offense out of the end zone last season for the first time in six years.

                  Sept. 18

West Virginia at Colorado: The Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever that keeps Colorado coaches and ADs scheduling these type of games dates back to the 1980s under Bill McCartney. Since 2003, CU has played UCLA, Washington State, Florida State, Miami, Arizona State and Georgia in the regular season. Record: 2-7.

                  Sept. 20

Georgia at Arizona State: Not a good matchup if you're an ASU offensive lineman. The Sun Devils allowed the second-most sacks in the country (55) last season. Georgia led the SEC in sacks (42).

LSU at Auburn: Before we get into the West Division implications, note to Tubs: Make sure you shade a guy over to Demetrius Byrd's side. He was the LSU receiver who caught the winning touchdown pass with one second left last season.

Florida at Tennessee: Hate Inc. UT lost this game by 39 last season and ended up playing for the SEC title. Think that sat well with Florida?

Wake at Florida State: Forget the Bowden Bowl, Bobby needs to win the Grobe Grudge. Wake has won the last two in a row for the first time.

                  Sept. 27

John Parker Wilson has yet to beat Georgia while a starter at Alabama.

Tennessee at Auburn: The Vols are 12-0 after Florida in regular season games last 12 seasons.

Wisconsin at Michigan: The Rich Rod infiltration of the Big Ten continues. Good-old pro-style vs. new-fangled spread option.

Virginia Tech at Nebraska: If the Huskers are going to be any good at all, they have to win this game. Virginia Tech's defense will be good enough to hug out its differences with Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz.

TCU at Oklahoma: Oklahoma is reportedly concerned about TCU spies after the Sooners lost to the Horned Frogs in 2005. OU assistants are being issued night vision goggles for practice after the sun goes down.

Fresno State at UCLA: This ends a brutal non-conference schedule for Fresno. If the Bulldogs can get through Rutgers, Wisconsin and Toledo, they could be talking Orange Bowl by this point.

Alabama at Georgia: If Saban has his way, this game will be played in a cone of silence. No pesky spectators or media to get in the way of his mission. The Dawgs have won three in a row over the Tide, the last in overtime.

                  Oct. 4

Ohio State at Wisconsin: Might be the Big Ten Game of the Year. Of course, it doesn't take much to earn that label. Wisconsin led in the third quarter at Columbus last year before losing by 21.

Missouri at Nebraska: The last time Missouri won in Lincoln, Central State (Ohio) University's AD played in the game. That would be one Kellen Winslow in 1978.

Oregon at USC: The Ducks treated USC's Mark Sanchez like beaver road kill on I-5 last season (two interceptions). Oregon's D has gotten ornerier.

                  Oct. 9

Clemson at Wake Forest: Thursday night at Groves Stadium, what could be scarier? No, really. This is a matchup of the ACC's top two quarterbacks.

                  Oct. 11

Tim Tebow accounted for three touchdown's in last season's matchup with LSU.

LSU at Florida: The Crazy Les legend grew last season in this meeting. LSU went five-for-five on fourth downs. Tim Tebow can't be any greater than he was that night (two touchdowns throwing, one rushing), can he?

Arizona State at USC: If the Trojans are going to be knocked off their Pac-10 throne, it has to start here. It's been nine years since the Sun Devils won in the Coliseum.

Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas): As usual, Big 12 South and national championship hopes are at stake. Somehow, the turkey legs and corn dogs taste better for the winners.

                  Oct. 18

Kansas at Oklahoma: Kansas' Todd Reesing likes to run around. Oklahoma DE Auston English likes to chase. Reesing better have help. Oklahoma is 21-0 in Big 12 home games since 2002. Michigan at Penn State: Give Rodriguez Penn State's skill players and Michigan might have a better chance this season. Give Rod JoePa's players and he might have the cops swarming around.

Ohio State at Michigan State: Mark Dantonio tries to psyche out his former boss (Jim Tressel) by sporting green and white argyle. Will it matter? Ohio State has won the last six in this series.

Missouri at Texas: This might be all that stands between Missouri and an undefeated season. The Tigers are a better team on paper but this game is in Austin where the Longhorns are 10-0 following the Oklahoma game the past decade. Four of those wins have been against ranked teams.

                  Oct. 23

Auburn at West Virginia: This should be interesting. One of the nation's best spread-option pass schemers (Auburn OC Tony Franklin) vs. one of the nation's best spread-option run schemes.

                  Oct. 25

Alabama at Tennessee: The Tide might have reached their '07 high in last seasons' 24-point victory over UT. John Parker Wilson, time for you to step up again.

                  Oct. 26

Central Florida at Tulsa: 2007's No. 1 offense (nationally) vs. Conference USA's No. 1 defense (projected in 2008). The Golden Hurricane lost twice to the Knights last season, including the Conference USA championship game.

Georgia at LSU: SEC championship game preview? The teams haven't met since the '05 title game. Pro SCOUT s fight over press box space to watch Matthew Stafford vs. the LSU defense.

                  Nov. 1

Georgia vs. Florida (in Jacksonville, Fla.) Urban Meyer orders the entire population of Gainesville onto the field after the Gators first touchdown.

Texas at Texas Tech: The over-under is 78. That's the average number of points scored in this game the past five years. All have been won by Texas.

                  Nov. 8

Could this be the final Bowden Bowl?

Clemson at Florida State: Tommy has won the last four out of five over his dad. Will this be the last meeting?

                  Nov. 22

BYU at Utah: Hopefully, a BCS bowl is at stake. The last time it was, Utah fans broke out one of the best signs of all time during a rout of the Cougars: Where's Your God Now?

Michigan at Ohio State: Yo, Rich. Big game today. You might have heard about when you came to town.

Cal Poly at Wisconsin: The San Luis Obispo County fair got in the way of a September meeting so they moved this game to late November. Kidding. Just threw this in to remind you that no one is safe. The I-AA Mustangs won at San Diego State in 2006, averaged a school-record 40 points last season and return 10 starters to a confusing option offense.

                  Nov. 28

West Virginia at Pittsburgh: Devine vs. McCoy. Stewart vs. Wannstedt. White vs. Pittsburgh's defense. West Virginia's psyche vs. itself. Just think if the Mountaineers need this to go to the BCS title game. Again.

                  Nov. 29

Chase Daniel and Mizzou should have a lot riding on the outcome of the Kansas game.

Missouri vs. Kansas (in Kansas City, Mo.): The winner could be playing at Arrowhead two weeks in a row. Kansas City hosts the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 6. Nothing, though, can top last season's epic. The second-largest crowd in Arrowhead history watched Missouri win 36-28.

Auburn at Alabama: Tommy Tuberville is running out of hands to show the cameras how many times in a row he has won.

                  Dec. 6

South Florida at West Virginia: Jim Leavitt might -- just might -- admit this is a big game. The South Florida coach fell asleep during Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. Not much phases him. The winner here should capture the Big East. Two top 10 Mountaineers' teams have played South Florida the past two years. Two top 10 Mountaineers teams have come out losers. The tough Bulls' D has shut down West Virginia's running game.

USC at UCLA: Rick Neuheisel is Tabasco. This rivalry, lately has been rice cakes. In other words, USC-UCLA needs a little Ricky Tabasco.

                    Thursday's Games

Long road trip for UTEP; underdog is 12-2 vs spread in Miners' last 14 road games, with UTEP 13-5 vs spread in last 18 tries as a road dog (9-3 under Price). Buffalo is 2-0-1 as home favorite, but 4-12-1 vs spread in last 17 non-MAC games. Buffalo has senior QB, UTEP a sophomore signal caller.

Not too often an SEC team visits Oxford, OH, so this is big deal for Miami's Red Hawks, who have 17 starters back, three seniors on OL. Vandy is 13-4 vs spread as road dog; they start five jrs on OL. Miami is 12-6-1 as home favorite since '03. Commodores beat Miami 24-13 last year, laying 13 points at home.

NC State is starting redshirt freshman QB; Wolfpack covered 17 of last 23 as road dog- their turnover ratio the last four years is an abysmal -44, so they can improve greatly by cleaning that up. Gamecocks are 6-4 as home favorite under Spurrier; they have a soph QB starting, with six starts to his credit.

Wake Forest has junior QB with 23 starts, but they don't have a senior on OL (start four juniors) and covered just four of last 11 as road favorite. Wake is 20-7 SU the last two years. Baylor has new coach; old one covered just two of last 11 as home dog-- in last two seasons, they covered just four of 17 as an underdog.

Oregon State won six of last seven games vs Stanford, winning last two visits here, 24-19/30-7; Beavers covered six of last eight as road favorite, 20 of last 34 overall in Pac-10 play. Cardinal has covered two of last 10 as home dog. Both teams have junior QB and three starters back on offensive line.

Troy covered four of last five as road favorite; they have top 10 offensive linemen back, with three senior starters, but have new QB. Trojans beat Middle Tennessee last two years, 21-20/45-7. MTSU has very young OL and soph QB; they're 8-6 vs spread as underdog, 2-2 in last four tries as a home dog.

                    Friday's Games

Temple lost 37-21 to Army LY (+6). despite 24-43/359 yards thru air; they were -2 in turnovers, but Owls' 105 returning starts on OL is T6th in country- they also have all 22 starters back from a year ago. Temple is 0-2 as favorite since '03. Army covered just two of last eight as home dog- they are starting freshman QB.

SMU debut for June Jones, so Mustangs will use Run & Shoot; Rice won four of last five vs SMU, winning 43-42 in Dallas in '07 after trailing by 15 points in 4th quarter. SMU lost its last nine visits to Rice. Owls have senior QB and three senior starters on OL- they covered 12 of their last 16 conference games.

North Carolina State at South Carolina [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

NC State: The Wolfpack had all kinds of trouble last year at the quarterback position and will now look to redshirt freshman Russell Wilson to lead the offense. At 5-11, Wilson isn't your prototypical quarterback but he won the job with an impressive performance in summer ball. One thing in Wilson's favor is that NC State is loaded at running back. Look for the Wolfpack to run right at South Carolina's defensive front with Jamelle Eugene and Andre Brown. NC State is talented in the secondary but they need to get more of a pass rush than they did a year ago. The Wolfpack's final six losses last year were all by 17 points or more.

North Carolina State is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 18-8-2 in NC State's last 28 games on grass.

Key Injuries - RB Jamelle Eugene (ankle) is OUT.
RB Toney Baker (knee) is OUT.
S Javon Walker (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 14 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

South Carolina (-14, O/U 45.5): The Gamecocks ended last season on a five-game losing streak but expectations are high in Columbia with 16 starters returning. The Gamecocks allowed 209 yards per game on the ground last year but that number should improve dramatically with the return of All-SEC linebacker Jasper Brinkley and DT Nathan Pepper, who were both injured for most of the 2007 season. Redshirt junior Tommy Beecher gets the call at quarterback. Beecher is a threat to both run and pass and he has a good understanding of the offense after spending four years learning Steve Spurrier's system.

South Carolina is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games vs. ACC.
The OVER is 23-9 in South Carolina's last 32 home games. RB Mike Davis (suspension) is probable.

Key Injuries - S Darian Stewart (foot) is probable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 28

Oregon State at Stanford [ESPN2 | 9 PM ET]

Oregon State (-3, O/U 45.5): The Beavers must replace their entire front seven on defense but things aren't as bleak as they look on the surface. Oregon State was very deep on defense a year ago, rotating a lot of players. As a matter of fact, starting ends Slade Norris and Victor Butler actually led the team in sacks last year as reserves. Toss in a strong secondary and the Beavers defense could be a lot better than people think. Junior quarterback Lyle Moevao started the last four games for the Beavers last year (All Wins) and he's shown a much better grasp of the offense in practice. Moevao will be aided by the return of WR/KR Sammy Stroughter, who missed all but three games last season with a lacerated kidney.

Oregon State is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 7-3 in Oregon State's last 10 conference games.

Key Injuries - S Al Afalava (suspension) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 28 (Side Play of the Day)

Stanford: Jim Harbaugh enters his second season as the Cardinal's head coach and with 16 returning starters, a lot of people have pegged Stanford as a sleeper coming into the season. Senior Tavita Pritchard won the job at quarterback. Harbaugh said Pritchard's experience and grasp of the offense won him the job. Pritchard will try to improve an offense that averaged just 19.6 points per game a year ago. The Stanford defense actually has a chance to be one of the better units in the Pac 10. The Cardinal became more of an attacking defense under Harbaugh and that should continue this season. The Cardinal are at home tonight but they are just 2-11 SU and 3-10 ATS in their new stadium.

Stanford is 3-10 ATS in its last 13 home games.
The UNDER is 16-5 Stanford's last 21 games on grass.

Key Injuries - RB Toby Gerhart (hamstring) is questionable.
WR Richard Sherman (knee) is questionable

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 17

SMU at Rice [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

SMU: The June Jones era kicks off at SMU with the Mustangs hoping that he can bring back the pre-death penalty success the school once enjoyed. If the Mustangs are going to return to a bowl game for the first time since 1984, they’ll do so on the arm of freshman quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. The Texas high school star gets first crack at running Jones’ vaunted Run 'n' Shoot offense. But regardless of who is under center, SMU isn't going anywhere until they dramatically improve a defense that ranked 116th in total defense and 117th in scoring defense a year ago. The Ponies will employ an attacking style of defense this season under new coordinator Tom Mason, which he admits is high-risk, high-reward. The Ponies have not won at Rice since 1986 (0-9).

SMU is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games overall.
The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Key Injuries - S Bryce Hudman (suspension) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 38 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Rice (-3.5, O/U 70): Rice is hoping that this year’s opener goes better than last season when the team was upset by Division 1-AA Nicholls State. If the Owls are going to improve on last year’s 3-9 record, it will be behind an explosive offense led by QB Chase Clement and WR Jarett Dillard. The two have already combined for 32 touchdowns, six shy of the NCAA record. But as bad as SMU’s defense was last year, Rice’s was even worse, ranking 118th nationally. If there is a silver lining, four true freshmen started on the Owls defense in 2007, so they should be better with a year of experience under their belts. Rice has a big advantage being at home tonight. The visitor is just 2-9-1 ATS in this series.

Home team is 10-2 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The OVER is 21-5 in Rice's last 26 home games.

Key Injuries - RB Justin Hill (shoulder/foot) is probable.
CB Joseph Leary (hamstring) is questionable.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 41
