    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, August 26

Two veteran pitchers will take to the mound on Tuesday night when the Mets and the Phillies meet in an NL East divisional matchup. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

It'll be Pedro Martinez (4-3, 4.97 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (11-7, 3.54 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Mets begin a short two-game road set against the division-rival Phillies.

Martinez has managed to pick up just one win so far in the month of August, going 1-1 with three no-decisions over five outings. However, the righthander held the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in four of those five August starts. Last time out, against the Braves, Martinez surrendered four earned runs on seven hits over seven innings.

Moyer is 1-1 with two no-decisions in his four August outings, but he's also been effective - the lefthander has allowed just six earned runs over 24 2-3 innings so far this month. Moyer was stuck with a no-decision in his start against the Nationals last time out, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits over 6 2-3 innings of work that day.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The poor Rockies seem to end up in this section quite a bit. Colorado is expected to send Jorge De La Rosa (6-7, 5.86 ERA) to the mound on the road on Tuesday night when they take on San Francisco. The Giants' probable pitcher for the contest is rookie Matt Palmer (0-1, 8.64 ERA), who was roughed up in his first start of the season against the Braves, but came back with a solid outing against the Marlins last Thursday night.

    Also on the schedule . . .

The rest of the National League schedule for Tuesday night: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, the Dodgers at Washington, Florida at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Houston, Milwaukee at St. Louis, and Arizona at San Diego. Brandon Webb (19-4, 2.74 ERA) will be gunning for his 20th win of the season when the Diamondbacks take on the weakling Padres.

Over in the American League the top Tuesday matchups are in the AL East, where it's Boston at the Yankees (Wakefield vs. Pettitte) and Toronto at Tampa Bay (Halladay vs. Shields). Other Junior Circuit contests on tap: the White Sox at Baltimore, Cleveland at Detroit, Texas at Kansas City, Oakland at the Angels, and Minnesota at Seattle.

    News from the wire . . .

There is still limited information available about the injuries being nursed by both Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady . . . the Giants have lost lineman Osi Umenyiora for the season because of a knee injury, and now might try to lure back Michael Strahan . . . Vijay Singh won the first PGA Tour playoff tournament, beating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland in a playoff at The Barclays.

    Peek at the future . . .

The second PGA Tour playoff tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship, gets underway on Thursday morning . . . it'll be Johan Santana (12-7, 2.64 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (11-7, 4.87 ERA) in the Mets/Phillies matchup on Wednesday night . . . the college football season gets underway on Thursday night with 14 games on the schedule, including No. 23 Wake Forest hitting the road for a contest against Baylor.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

My favorite six helmets in football history.......

      6) Cincinnati Bengals-- Love the tiger stripes all over helmet.

      5) Clemson Tigers-- Orange helmet, white tiger's paw. Nice.

      4) New Orleans Saints-- Have had same logo since they came into being in 1967, wth good reason; its a great logo.

      3) Iowa Barnstormers-- Old Arena League team; had goggles painted on top of a gold helmet. Excellent.

      2) San Diego Chargers-- Going back to white helmet a stroke of genius; overall, they have best uniforms in NFL.

      1) St Louis Rams-- First helmet with a logo; still the best.

Tuesday's List of 13: Ranking top 13 major league teams

        13) Bronx Bombers-- Left side of their infield makes as much as entire Tampa team, but they trail Rays by 10.5 games. Ouch.

        12) LA Dodgers-- Got handed Manny Ramirez for free, but are 11-12 since they got him. Maybe ol' Joe Torre isn't such a Hall of Fame manager after all........

        11) Arizona-- 10 times the Dodgers have tied Snakes on top of NL West, but haven't passed them yet. You want to face Haren Webb and Big Unit in a short series? Didn't think so........

        10) St Louis-- They don't ask how, they ask how many. This is quite possibly Larussa's best managing job.

        9) Philadelphia-- Rollins knocked in couple runs Monday, as Mets come into town for big two-game series Tuesday night.

        8) Milwaukee-- SCOUT s working overtime to come up with guys to draft next June, with four extra picks they're going to get as compensation for Sheets and Sabathia skipping town.

        7) Minnesota-- Their farm director, whoever he is, deserves big raise; they keep coming up with players who contribute.

        6) NY Mets-- Had good run vs weak sisters; now go to Philly, Florida this week, as things get more serious. Getting Church back in lineup helps a lot. Pelfrey having huge second half.

        5) White Sox-- First time ever a 500+ HR guy has been on same team with a 600+ HR guy. Got Crede back in lineup, could use a little more pitching depth, but couldn't everyone?

        4) Boston-- Get Wakefield back Tuesday; Beckett is slated to pitch vs Pale Hose this weekend. My ideal scenario is Boston signing Matt Holliday next winter, if the Rockies let him walk.

        3) Rays-- Have a lot of injuries, umpires have hosed them twice in big spots recently, but pitchers are healthy and that is most important. Longoria should be back in week or so. Will they be bringing prize pitching prospect Price up in September?

        2) Cubs-- As an A's fan, it hurts to see Rich Harden crushing NL hitters; the guy was rarely healthy in Oakland. TV people are praying Cubbies make it to World Series.

        1) Angels-- Best team in baseball by fairly wide margin. I used to have a theory that teams needed to be pushed during year to play well in playoffs, but in era of pitch counts, think now it is better to coast into October, which they are doing.

          SCOREBOARD

          Tuesday, Aug. 26

Boston at New York Yankees (7:05 p.m. EDT). In their final regular-season visit to Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox open a three-game series against their longtime rivals. Tim Wakefield (7-8, 3.67 ERA) is scheduled to come off the disabled list for Boston to face New York lefty Andy Pettitte (13-9, 4.17).

          STARS

          Monday

          - Grady Sizemore, Indians, homered twice and joined the 30-30 club (30 homers, 30 stolen bases) in Cleveland's 4-3, 10-inning win over Detroit.

          - Carlos Delgado and Mike Pelfrey, Mets. Delgado hit a pair of three-run homers and Pelfrey pitched his second consecutive complete game in a 9-1 victory over Houston.

          - Adrian Beltre, Mariners, hit a game-winning homer in the 11th inning after scoring the tying run in the ninth to help Seattle rally past Minnesota 4-2.

          - Jimmy Rollins, Phillies, went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and finished a home run shy of the cycle in Philadelphia's 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2007 NL MVP reached base five times.

          - Jody Gerut, Padres, hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give San Diego a 4-2 win over Arizona that snapped a seven-game losing streak.

          - Nelson Cruz, Rangers, went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in his major league season debut to lead Texas over Kansas City 9-4.

          STRANDED

Brett Myers, J.C. Romero and Clay Condrey combined on a 13-hit shutout in Philadelphia's 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Only two teams have had more hits without scoring a run in a nine-inning game: The New York Giants got 14 hits in a 7-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 14, 1913, and the Cleveland Indians had 14 in a 9-0 loss to the Washington Senators on July 10, 1928. Despite piling up 26 hits in their past two games, the Dodgers have totaled only two runs in a 20-inning span. Manny Ramirez doesn't have an RBI in the last seven games.

          30-30 CLUB

Grady Sizemore of the Indians homered on the game's second pitch to become the 14th American League player to join the 30-30 club, and first since Alfonso Soriano did it for Texas in 2005. Sizemore is the second Indians player to do it. Joe Carter also accomplished the feat with Cleveland in 1987, when he had 32 homers and 31 steals. Sizemore has 31 home runs and 34 steals, and needs nine homers and six steals to become the fifth player to reach 40-40 in a season. Jose Canseco (1988), Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998) and Soriano (2006) are the only ones to do it.

          CRUZ CONTROL

Nelson Cruz had three hits, including a three-run homer, in his major league season debut, and the Rangers beat the Royals 9-4. Cruz, promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma earlier in the day, homered in the third with Josh Hamilton and Marlon Byrd aboard. Cruz hit .342 with 37 home runs at Oklahoma and led the minors with a .693 slugging percentage. Last July 28, Cruz was recalled from the minors and had two homers and five RBIs at Kansas City in his first game of the season for Texas.

          THOME TIME

Jim Thome climbed another notch on the career home run list and helped Chicago widen its AL Central lead. Thome hit his 535th homer to gain sole possession of 15th place, and the White Sox beat the Orioles 4-3. Thome's 28th homer of the season gave his team a 4-3 lead in the sixth. The drive, off Baltimore rookie Chris Waters, moved Chicago's designated hitter past Jimmie Foxx and put him within one of Mickey Mantle on baseball's home run chart.

          WHAT A RELIEF!

The Twins bolstered their bullpen, adding veteran Eddie Guardado in a trade with the Rangers. Guardado, who pitched for Minnesota from 1993-03 and earned the nickname "Everyday Eddie'' for the number of innings he logged, pitched a perfect inning in his return, a 4-2 loss to Seattle in 11 innings. He will assume the setup role for the Twins. The Rangers received 21-year-old right-hander Mark Hamburger.

          AILING

The New York Mets put starter John Maine on the disabled list. He is out for at least three weeks with a bone spur in his right shoulder. ... All-Star third baseman Carlos Guillen left Detroit's game against Cleveland because of lower back spasms and is day-to-day. ... Johnny Cueto has a strained right elbow and will miss at least one start for Cincinnati.

          SURGING

Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat Pittsburgh 12-3 to improve baseball's best record. The Cubs moved to 81-50 - the first time they've been 31 games above .500 since they ended the 1984 season 96-65. Ted Lilly (13-7) pitched seven effective innings for the Cubs, who have won three straight and 23 of 31. Chicago has won 11 of its past 12 road games. ... Colorado has won eight of 10 to move within seven games of first-place Arizona in the NL West.

          STATS

Mike Pelfrey (13-8) became the first New York Mets pitcher with consecutive complete-game wins since Bret Saberhagen in 1995. ... Kosuke Fukudome, hitting .161 in August when the game began, drove in four runs for the Chicago Cubs in a 12-3 win at Pittsburgh. Jim Edmonds had a triple and two doubles after going 0-for-17 over his previous seven games. ... Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins got his first extra-base hits since Aug. 12 in his first multihit game since Aug. 13. ... Coming off his first shutout in four years, Brett Myers (7-10) of the Phillies ran his scoreless innings streak to 16.

          REDEMPTION

Brett Myers tossed seven gritty innings and Philadelphia completed its first four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 23 years with a 5-0 win. The Phillies have won eight of 10 since losing four straight at Dodger Stadium. It was their first four-game sweep over the Dodgers since Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, 1985, at Los Angeles. Philadelphia had never swept the Dodgers in a four-game series at home.

          SNAPPED

Jeff Francis got his first victory in more than two months, pitching Colorado to a 4-2 victory at San Francisco that ended the Giants' season-high five-game winning streak. The left-hander allowed two runs in the first, then settled in and lasted seven innings. It was only the Giants' second loss in their last nine games against teams within their own division.

          SPEAKING

"I saw him throw his finger (toward the showers) and I thought, 'What are you talking about? I'm going to the showers anyway. You're going to throw me out and the game's already over? You're cool.''' - Twins rookie Denard Span, still fuming after plate upmire Brian Gorman tossed him out of a game that had already ended with his strikeout Sunday at the Los Angeles Angels.

          SEASONS

          Aug. 26

          1916 - Philadelphia's Joe Bush pitched a no-hitter, beating Cleveland 5-0.

1939 - The first Major League Baseball game was televised as WXBS brought its cameras to Brooklyn's Ebbets Field for a doubleheader between the Cincinnati Reds and the Dodgers.

1947 - Brooklyn's Dan Bankhead became the first black pitcher in the majors. He homered in his first major league plate appearance, but didn't fare well on the mound. In 3 1-3 innings of relief, he gave up 10 hits and six earned runs to the Pirates. Pittsburgh won 16-3.

1987 - Milwaukee's Paul Molitor went 0-for-4, ending his 39-game hitting streak, and the Brewers beat the Cleveland Indians 1-0 in 10 innings on pinch-hitter Rick Manning's RBI single. With Molitor waiting in the on-deck circle for a possible fifth at-bat, Manning singled in the game-winner.

1999 - Randy Johnson reached 300 strikeouts in record time, notching nine in seven innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Florida Marlins 12-2. Johnson achieved the milestone in his 29th start.

2001 - Sammy Sosa hit his 50th and 51st home runs to power Chicago to a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals. Sosa joined Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth as the only major leaguers with four 50-homer seasons.

2002 - New York shortstop Derek Jeter scored his 100th run of the season joining Ted Williams (1939-49) and Earle Combs (1925-32) as the only players in modern history to score at least 100 runs in their first seven seasons. Jeter scored again in the bottom of the eighth as the Yankees routed visiting Texas 10-3.

2004 - Ichiro Suzuki homered in the ninth inning for his 200th hit of the season, but Seattle fell to Kansas City 7-3. Suzuki became the first player to reach 200 hits in each of his first four major league seasons.

2007 - Dalton Carriker's home run in the bottom of the eighth gave Warner Robins, Ga., a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tokyo to win the Little League World Series title.

2007 - Boston defeated the Chicago White Sox 11-1 to complete a four-game sweep. For the series, the Red Sox outscored Chicago 46-7. Boston scored at least 10 runs in every game of the series, which is only the fourth time that has happened in a four-game series since 1900 and the first time in the American League in 85 years.

Today's birthdays: Kyle Kendrick 24; Brendan Harris 28; Geoff Geary 32; Morgan Ensberg 33.

            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Mets: After a tough stretch of the season, Pedro Martinez has rebounded to pitch very well over his last seven starts. During that span, Martinez has only allowed more than three runs once. However, that one time was in his most recent outing against the Braves, a game the Mets won, 5-4, but Pedro took a no-decision. Martinez is 3-1 on the road this year, although his ERA is a disappointing 6.15 away from home.

Mets are 11-3 in their last 14 games overall.
The OVER is 7-3-1 in New York's last 11 Tuesday games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (-125, O/U 9): Jamie Moyer has been a machine over his last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less every time out. In his most recent start against the Nationals, Moyer took a no-decision after allowing just two runs in 6.2 innings of work. Moyer has been much better on the road than at home this season, where he's just 4-4 with an ERA of 4.32. The UNDER is 6-4 in Moyer's last 10 starts.

Phillies are 8-1 in their last 9 home games.
The UNDER is 10-1-1 in Philadelphia's last 12 home games.
ey Injuries - OF Pat Burrell (.268; rest) has returned.
            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET] |

Blue Jays: Roy Halladay has been lights out in his last two starts, allowing only four runs over 16 innings pitched. Halladay's last start on the road was a gem at Boston where he pitched a complete game, allowing just one run. Halladay is 9-7 in his career against the Rays with a 3.87 ERA. The UNDER is 7-3 in Halladay's last 10 starts.

Blue Jays are 7-3 in Halladay's last 10 starts.
The OVER is 4-0 in Toronto's last 4 games overall.
Key Injuries - 3B Scott Rolen (.252; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-120, O/U 7): The Rays have won four consecutive games with James Shields on the mound and eight of 10 overall. Shields was sensational in his most recent outing versus the Angels, allowing just two runs in eight innings of work. Shields has owned the Blue Jays, compiling a career record of 4-1 to go along with an impressive 2.63 ERA. He's also been close to unbeatable at home this year, going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 14 starts at Tropicana Field.

Rays are 7-1 in the last 8 meetings at Tampa Bay.
The OVER is 4-1 in Tampa Bay's last 5 home games.

Key Injuries - 3B Evan Longoria (.278; wrist) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Carl Crawford (.273; hand) is OUT for the season.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Brewers: Ben Sheets just can't seem to get out of this slump, going 1-4 in his last five starts. Over that stretch, Sheets has given up 17 runs in 32.1 innings on the mound. It?s not likely Sheets will get out of his funk tonight. He?s a miserable 5-14 in his career versus the Cardinals with an ERA of 4.20. Despite his recent struggles, the UNDER has cashed in six straight game with Sheets on the mound.

Brewers are 14-5 in their last 19 road games.
The UNDER is 12-3-1 in Milwaukee's last 16 road games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals (-110, O/U 8): Todd Wellemeyer has won three consecutive starts, allowing only five runs in his last 19.1 innings of work. Wellemeyer is 7-4 at home this season, although his ERA is a mediocre 4.58. Wellemeyer has faced the Brewers twice in his career, going 0-1 with a lofty 5.85 ERA.

The OVER is 2-1 in Wellemeyer's last three starts.
Cardinals are 7-3 in their last 10 games overall.
Cardinals are 8-2 in their last 10 games vs. Sheets.

Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-115, 8)

Since the arrival of CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets seems to be pitching with some added pressure. While he's sprinkled in some dominate performances, the Brewers have won just once in his last five starts as he's posted a 4.36 ERA. On the flipside, journeyman Todd Wellemeyer has kept LaRussa and the boys in the Wild Card race sporting a 3-0 record with a 2.13 ERA over four starts in August. As for how he has faired versus the sluggers from Milwaukee, Wellemeyer has an even more impressive, posting 1.64 ERA over 11 innings against them this season. While both teams have been winning of late, the Cards are crushing the ball over their last week (.379). Albert Pujols has the look of World Series winner and was 8-for-10, with four walks, two HRs, and eight RBIs last weekend. No matter how the veteran manager spins it, this series is the Cardinals season so expect them to be focused and the crowd to be rocking in St. Louis tonight.

                      Pick: Cardinals

Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays (-120, 7)

There are three reasons to take a hard look at the Blue Jays tonight. First, the Rays series with the first-place White Sox was an emotional one with plenty of controversy. After winning two of three, expect a little letdown with the middle of the road Jays in town. Second, with the Yankees and Boston squaring off, tough not to think you will see the young kids at Tropicana doing a little scoreboard watching. And finally, if Roy Halladay (15-9, 2.68) had a reverse of fortune against Tampa this season (0-3, 5.32), we would be talking about his second Cy Young award. Especially without Longoria and Crawford, look for Halladay to be psyched for some revenge and his teammates to finally breakout the sticks against a pitcher they have struggled with this season in James Shields (11-7, 3.68).

                      Pick: Rays
