    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, August 24

Two big winners will take the mound on Sunday afternoon when the Red Sox and Jays play the finale of their weekend series in Toronto. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

Daisuke Matsuzaka and A.J. Burnett both have a chance to win 20 games this season, but only one of them will be able to add to their impressive victory total when the Red Sox and Blue Jays meet at 1:07pm ET at Rogers Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Matsuzaka (15-2, 2.77 ERA) has managed to pick up seven wins in his past 10 starts, and the Red Sox are 8-2 over that span. The righthander is coming off a solid but short outing against the Orioles on August 19 in which he surrendered two earned runs on six hits over five innings of work. Dice-K walked five in that game, and fanned six.

Burnett (16-9, 4.51 ERA) is coming off a stellar start against the Yankees on August 19 in which he gave up just one earned run on five hits over eight innings of work and fanned 13 batters (walking just one). The righthander has earned the victory in each of his last six starts, and Toronto is 8-2 in his past 10 trips to the mound as well.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The two biggest storylines surrounding the Bills/Colts NFL preseason game on Sunday night will be the health of Peyton Manning and the debut of Indy's new facility (Lucas Oil Stadium). The actual play on the field won't hold much interest, especially since Bills starting QB Trent Edwards (quadriceps injury) will be on the sidelines as well. The oddsmakers have Indy as a 5.5-point favorite with a total of 38 points on Sunday.

    Also on the schedule . . .

It'll be Kevin Slowey (10-8, 3.78 ERA) vs. Ervin Santana (13-5, 3.39 ERA) when the Twins play in Los Angeles against the Angels on Sunday afternoon. Also on the day's American League schedule: the Yankees at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at the White Sox, Detroit at Kansas City, Oakland at Seattle, and Cleveland at Texas.

Rich Harden (3-1, 1.50 ERA in the NL) will be looking to keep that ERA low when the Cubs play host to Jason Bergmann (2-9, 4.50 ERA) and the Nationals on Sunday afternoon. The rest of the National League slate: Houston at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, Atlanta at St. Louis, Cincinnati at Colorado, San Diego at San Francisco, Florida at Arizona, and the Dodgers at Philadelphia (in the 8:00pm ET game).

Finally, the drivers of Formula One will return to the track on Sunday at Valencia Street Circuit in Spain for the European Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton holds a 62-57 lead on Kimi Raikkonen in the drivers championship heading into this race, while Felipe Massa is eight points behind the leader. Team Ferrari has a 111-100 lead on rival McLaren-Mercedes in the constructors championship, with BMW Sauber third at 90.

    News from the wire . . .

The Mets activated outfielder Ryan Church from the disabled list on Friday, but he might only have a part-time role in the weeks ahead . . . Third baseman Hank Blalock is back with the Rangers after he was also activated from the DL on Friday . . . Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson returned to action in the team's preseason loss to the Cowboys over the weekend - he didn't have a catch in the game, but also had no setbacks.

    Peek at the future . . .

The Dodgers and Phillies will close out their four-game weekend series on Monday night, with Chad Billingsley (12-9, 3.10 ERA) expected to take on Brett Myers (6-10, 4.71 ERA) . . . the Seahawks and Chargers will play at Qualcomm Stadium at 8:00pm ET in the final preseason Monday nighter . . . the last week of the NFL's exhibition schedule begins on Thursday night, with 13 games on the schedule for that day.

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles [YES | 1:35 PM ET]

Yankees (-125, O/U 11): Darrell Rasner hasn't tasted victory since July 12 and the Yankees are just 3-7 in his last 10 starts. He did pitch well in his most recent outing against Toronto, although he received a no-decision after giving up just one run over 6.2 innings in a 2-1 Yankees loss. Rasner has been abused on the road this year, sporting a 5.37 ERA away from home. He's also been battered in his career versus the Orioles. Rasner is just 1-4 with a 5.26 ERA against Baltimore. Not surprisingly, the OVER is 7-3 in Rasner's last 10 starts.

OVER - Total Play of the Day) Yankees are 24-9 in their last 33 Sunday games.
The OVER is 7-3 in New York's last 10 games vs. AL East.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Orioles: Daniel Cabrera has not pitched well over the last month. In his last seven starts, Cabrera has allowed six runs or more four times. However, the Orioles offense has given him strong run support, allowing them to go 4-3 over that span. Cabrera has faced the Yankees 16 times over his career, going 6-6 with a 4.56 ERA. The OVER is a profitable 4-2-1 the last seven times Cabrera has taken the mound.

Orioles are 4-10 in their last 14 home games.
The OVER is 7-1 in Cabrera's last 8 starts vs. New York.

Key Injuries - Closer George Sherrill (31 saves; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Tampa Bay Rays at Chicago White Sox [TBS | 2 PM ET]

Rays: Andy Sonnanstine has been on fire over his last four starts. He's gone 3-1 during that stretch, giving up just eight runs in 25 innings of work. Sonnanstine has performed well on the road this season, going 6-3 with a subpar ERA of 4.24. Sonnanstine didn't pitch great his last time out versus the White Sox but overall he has great numbers against the Pale Hose, compiling an impressive 2.14 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. The UNDER is 3-1 in Sonnanstine's last three starts.

Rays are 18-5 in their last 23 games overall.
The UNDER is 21-8 in Tampa Bay's last 29 road games.

Key Injuries - 3B Evan Longoria (.278; wrist) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Carl Crawford (.273; hand) is OUT for the season.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

White Sox (-170, O/U 9.5): Mark Buehrle has won three consecutive starts and five of seven overall. Buehrle has been particularly strong in his last three outings, allowing just six runs in 20 innings of work. Buehrle has been a stud at home this season, going 8-3 with an impressive 3.06 ERA. He's also owned the Rays over his career, sporting a 6-2 record in nine starts. After pitching two straight UNDERS, Buehrle’s last start went way OVER the total.

White Sox are 40-15 in their last 54 home games.
White Sox are 8-4 in the last 12 meetings at Chicago.

Key Injuries - White Sox DH Jim Thome (.251; leg) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Dodgers: After allowing just one run in three consecutive starts, Hiroki Kuroda was touched up for four runs in six innings his last time out against the Rockies. Kuroda has been tough at home but terrible on the road this season, where he’s 2-7 with a 4.75 ERA. Kuroda shut down the Phillies offense just over a week ago, getting the win after allowing only one run over seven innings. The UNDER is 3-1 in Kuroda’s last four starts.

Dodgers are 2-8 in their last 10 road games.
Dodgers are 2-6 in Kuroda's last 8 road starts.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Phillies (-125, O/U 9): Joe Blanton has received a no-decision in each of his last three starts, but he didn't pitch well in his two most recent outings, giving up eight runs in just 10 innings of work. One of those games was against the Dodgers, as Blanton only lasted five innings after allowing nine hits and four runs. Blanton has compiled an unimpressive home record pitching for the A's and Phillies. He's just 2-9 in 17 home starts with a 4.53 ERA this season.

Phillies are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-1-1 in Philadelphia's last 10 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Geoff Jenkins (.246; quad) is doubtful.

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (+135, 8)

Away from the pressure in the house Epstein built, Daisuke Matsuzaka is an unblemished 7-0 and sporting 2.17 ERA. While Matsuzaka has only faced the Blue Jays once this season and it was in front of the Green Monster, he was dominant in seven innings allowing only two hits and nobody to cross the plate. As for yesterday's Red Sox debacle, Francona's offense only mustered four hits and ruined an opportunity to create some space in the Wild Card race (leading by a half game over Chicago) as their division leader rolled the White Sox again. While they'll have a tough task facing A.J. Burnett (16-9, 4.51) since his teammates always seem to come alive for a pitcher allowing opponents to hit .266 in Toronto, Burnett is coming off his highest pitch total of the season (120), including averaging over 110 pitches over his last five starts. The Red Sox bounce back today with the playoff race heading up and the Blue Jays a little satisfied with yesterday's performance and looking forward to a day off Monday.

                    Pick: Red Sox

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals (-210, 9 1/2)

Jo-Jo Reyes (3-9, 5.18) hasn't won a decision in his last eight outings and has seen his ERA raise from 4.05 to 5.18, which means a desperate Cardinals squad hitting .370 over their last five games will capitalize on the pressure of a pitcher trying to hold on to a rotation spot for next year. Toeing the rubber for LaRussa's wild card chasers, Braden Looper (11-10, 3.94) has looked like the staff ace over his last six starts (1.80 ERA) and continues to swing a mighty stick to boot (.286). Historically, young squads out of the race (Braves) coming off a win Saturday on the road usually are not as sharp on Sunday Funday afternoon. And yesterday's elongated date at the office after a ninth inning raid-delay probably encouraged some interesting evenings for an Atlanta squad roaming the St. Louis streets by 7 p.m.

                    Pick: Cardinals

Sunday Night Baseball: Dodgers at Phillies
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies (-125, 9)
                      LAD: 64-62 (26-32 away)
                      PHI: 68-58 (34-27 home)

                      Kuroda (7-9 3.97 ERA) vs. Blanton (6-12 4.87 ERA)

This weekend's game of the week on ESPN features two second-place teams in their respective divisions. The LA Dodgers are two games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the West and the Philadelphia Phillies are 1.5 games behind the East leading Mets. So it goes without saying that this is a huge series for both teams as it nears the end of August and every win is more important than ever.

Neither of the two teams will be sending their strongest pitcher to the mound on Sunday night as both starters have records under .500. The Dodgers are sending right-hander Hiroki Kuroda (7-9 3.97 ERA) to the mound to face fellow right-hander Joe Blanton (6-12 4.87 ERA) of the Phillies.

Kuroda has faced the Phillies once this season and shut down their powerful offense going seven innings, allowing two hits and gave up 1 ER while striking out 7 on the way to a win. But overall Kuroda has struggled on the road this season where he is 2-7 with a 4.75 ERA, and teams are batting a scorching .290 against him.

Joe Blanton was acquired by the Phillies in the middle of June to add some depth to their pitching rotation, and he's done a solid job as the Phillies have gone 4-2 in games that Blanton has started; however, he only has one decision in those 6 games (1-0). Blanton faced the Dodgers on Aug. 13 and had little success. He lasted just 5 innings allowing four earned runs off of nine hits and walking three. Opposing right-handed batters are hitting .311 against Blanton and it just so happens that the Dodgers are a right-hand dominated team, occasionally batting 7-8 right-handers in their starting line-up.

The Phillies will be looking for revenge against the Dodgers as LA took a four-game sweep from the Phillies last week. All four wins were by a combined six runs. LA is 2-6 in their last eight road games this season.

Total bettors should note that the Phillies have averaged 4.2 runs per game last 10 overall. L.A. has fared a little worse by scoring just 3.7 runs per game in that same span. In the last series between these two teams they combined for 32 total runs or 8 per game. Two stayed 'under' and two went 'over' the total.

                          WELCOME BACK

Pitching in the major leagues for the first time since April 2007, Carl Pavano allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings to earn the win for the Yankees, 5-3 over Baltimore. The right-hander walked one, hit two batters and struck out five in his 91-pitch effort. It was Pavano's 20th start with the Yankees since signing a four-year, $39.95 million contract before the 2005 season. Only three of those appearances have come since June 2005; his latest injury resulted in elbow ligament replacement surgery last June and a 14-month rehabilitation.

                          NUMB

Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett won't face the New York Yankees on Tuesday after skipping a bullpen session Saturday because of continued numbness and tingling in his pitching arm. Manager Terry Francona said Beckett has "inflammation'' in his elbow and likely won't start again until next Friday, when the Red Sox return home to open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

                          THE RIGHT ROLE

The Cubs' Ryan Dempster matched a career high with his 15th win. The right-hander scattered eight hits, struck out four and walked one in Chicago's 9-2 win over Washington. He also won 15 games for Florida in 2001. Converted to a starter this season after being Chicago's closer last year, Dempster improved to 12-2 in 16 home starts. ... Detroit's Zach Miner pitched three-hit ball for seven innings to improve to 4-1 since moving to the rotation after making 32 relief appearances this season.

                          STRONG IN DEFEAT

Chicago's Jermaine Dye hit two solo homers and Javier Vazquez retired his first 17 batters in the White Sox's 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay.

                          WINNING FEELING

Toronto's Jesse Litsch pitched six sharp innings in the Blue Jays' 11-0 to win for the first time since June 26. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out four. The right-hander was demoted to Triple-A on July 24 and made three minor league starts before returning Aug. 14 and pitching seven shutout innings at Detroit.

                          WINNING MONTH

Barry Zito (8-15) allowed four hits in eight innings for his second straight victory and only his third at home in 13 decisions. He gave up three runs, walked three and struck out five in San Francisco's 4-3 win over the Padres. Zito's 27 wins in August are his most in any month, and his 2.81 ERA is tops, too.

                          RAIN RUNS

Rain delayed the Braves' 8-4 win over St. Louis for 49 minutes in the top of the ninth inning. When play resumed, Atlanta scored three times.

                          UNLUCKY SEVEN

The Royals' 4-0 loss to Detroit gave them their third losing streak of at least seven games this season. Kansas City has been outscored 78-29 in losing 10 of 11 and falling a season worst 19-games below .500.

                          OOPS

Florida second baseman Dan Uggla was charged with two errors on one play in the eight inning of a 7-1 loss to Arizona for bobbling a grounder by Stephen Drew and making a poor throw that allowed Jeff Salazar to reach third.

                          STATS

The Yankees' Hideki Matsui had a solo shot for his 500th career RBI in a 5-3 win over Baltimore. ... The Mets' Brian Schneider has hit four homers in his last six starts.

                          SPEAKING

"It's amazing. This is what I get paid to do, this is what I live for. This is all I really want, to go out there every fifth day and do my job.'' - Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano, who made just his 20th start for New York since signing a four-year, $39.95 million contract before the 2005 season. He allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings to earn his first win of the year, 5-3 over the Orioles.

1940 - Outfielder Ted Williams pitched the last two innings for the Boston Red Sox against Detroit at Fenway Park. He allowed one run on three hits, but struck out Rudy York on three pitches. The Tigers, behind Tommy Bridges, won 12-1.

1951 - St. Louis Browns owner Bill Veeck gave over 1,000 fans behind his dugout YES and NO placards that allowed them to have a part in the strategy of the game. The fans flashed the cards when asked by the coaches what the Browns should do and it worked as St. Louis beat the Philadelphia Athletics 5-3.

1971 - Ernie Banks hit the 512th and final home run of his career as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4. Banks' shot came off Jim McGlothin in the first inning.

1975 - Ed Halicki of San Francisco pitched a 6-0 no-hitter against the New York Mets to lead the Giants to a sweep of a doubleheader. 1989 - After six months of denial, defense and delay, Cincinnati manager Pete Rose was banned for life from baseball by commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti for gambling. Rose, baseball's career hits leader and holder of 19 major league records, signed a five-page agreement with Giamatti in which he agreed to a lifetime penalty but did not admit gambling on baseball.

2001 - Colorado starting pitcher Jason Jennings went 3-for-5 in his major league debut, including a homer and an RBI single, while giving up five hits and striking out eight in a complete game shutout over the Mets, 10-0. The right-hander became the first pitcher in modern history to throw a shutout and hit a homer in his first game.

2003 - Ramon Hernandez and Miguel Tejada hit grand slams as Oakland routed Toronto 17-2.

2006 - Boston beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 to hand rookie Jered Weaver his first loss. Weaver (9-1) was trying to become the third pitcher in big-league history to win his first 10 decisions as a starter.

2007 - Greg Maddux became the first pitcher to win 10 games in 20 consecutive seasons, tossing seven solid innings in the San Diego Padres' 14-3 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies.
