THE RED SHEET
RATINGS: 89 & ABOVE: SUPERIOR PLAY
88 & BELOW: ABOVE AVERAGE PLAY
SUMMARY OF PLAYS:
90* TEXAS TECH
89* LOUISIANA STATE
88* OKLAHOMA STATE
88* NAVY
88* FLORIDA STATE
88* GREEN BAY
TEXAS TECH 55 - Iowa State 20 - (7:00 EDT) -- Line opened at TexasTech minus 16, and is still minus 16. As you know, the Raiders sat in this exact same spot last week, & came in with just their latest eye-popping performance. Symons is weekly taking his spot among the most prolific tossers in history, as he has thrown for 586, 661, & 505 PYs the past 3 weeks, & clicked on 8 TD passes in Tech's rout of TexasA&M, a 25½ pt cover. In contrast, the Cyclones are have been on a steady decline for a year, with their current 1-8 spread run the result. They are hurting in the all-important skill positions, as well as on the defensive line. Can't see any dedication here, on heels of slaughter hosting Oklahoma. Revenge! RATING: TEXAS TECH 90
LOUISIANA STATE 34 - Florida 13 - (3:30) -- Line opened at LSU minus 9, and is still minus 9. Where, oh where, have you gone Steve Spurrier? The Gators have been on a steady decline since the departure of their former offensive genius head coach. A year ago, Zook took on an impossible quest, namely to continue the awesome play that UF had exhibited just about every week. Check an 11-8 SU record since the onset of '02, with 5 of those wins by a TD or less. Enter the Tigers, who have been perfect thus far, with those 8 returning offensive starters, along with a rock-ribbed defense which ranks 4th in the land in total "D", as well as 3rd in scoring "D". Can't see Gators containing the run or the pass in this. RATING: LOUISIANA STATE 89
OKLAHOMA STATE 31 - Kansas State 24 - (12:30) -- Line opened at KansasSt minus 2½, and is still minus 2½. Very tough spot for the Wildcats here, as they must try to regroup off their excruciating loss at Texas, in which they overcame a 17-0 deficit in the 2nd quarter, taking a 20-17 lead in the 4th, only to lose in the last 5½ minutes. That marks their 2nd consecutive gut wrenching setback. Thus, this normally pleasant trip has turned into a pressure packed event. A year ago, the 'Cats had a 499-184 yd edge in dismantling the 'Pokes, but their normal humming offense ranks just 35th, despite 3 absolute patsies. OkieSt will be ready for this revenger, & are cooking behind a bevy of skill performers. RATING: OKLAHOMA STATE 88
Navy 31 - VANDERBILT 24 - (2:00) -- Line opened at Vanderbilt minus 5½, and is still minus 5½. Two weeks ago, we pegged the Middies as a Four Star Play on our phone service (our highest play), & they failed miserably, with a 22-pt spread loss to Rutgers. However, a closer look showed that Navy had a 373-249 RY edge en route to a 490 yd day, with 3 lost fumbles the main culprits. Last week, we came right back with the Middies as phone 4 Star play, & they proved us correct, with their upset of AirForce, in which the 2 TD spread was never really in doubt. Navy ranks as the #1 overland team in the nation. Catching the 'Dores (ranked72nd in rush "D") as rare chalk, in an SEC sandwich, equals near perfect setup. RATING: NAVY 88
FLORIDA STATE 34 - Miami-Florida 20 - (12:00) -- Line opened at FloridaSt minus 4½, and is now minus 6. The 1½ pt line move on this one has to be attributed to the 'Canes' narrow escape vs WestVirginia last week. That scoreboard whisker difference marks Miami's 2nd narrow win this season (Florida), & if it hadn't been for the big play, the 'Canes' win over Boston College may have gone down to the final gun. The bottom line is the fact that this 'Cane edition isn't up to the standard that they set the past 2 seasons. Overland, Miami ranks 60th in the nation, & has now lost its top runner. 'Noles also have a squeaking win, but the slaughters of Maryland & Colorado cannot be downplayed. Revenge rears its head. RATING: FLORIDA STATE 88
GREEN BAY 33 - Kansas City 23 - (1:00) -- Line opened at GreenBay minus 1, and is now minus 2. The Packers have been a second tier NFL power since 1998, the year after their 2nd straight Super Bowl appearance. They are feared, to be sure, but not with the intensity of their glory years of '95 thru '97. Favre still ranks among the QB elites, & that offense can still impress, but 33 losses since the 5th week of '98, can't be dismissed. However, the past 2 weeks have shown much of the old spark, as that Monday rout of the Bears, & that dismantling of formerly undefeated Seattle attest. Chiefs offer yet another gold wrapped incentive booster. And remember, KC was taken to the cleaners, statwise, last week. RATING: GREEN BAY 88
NEAR CHOICES (Rated 87): Michigan St, Purdue, Maryland, Wisconsin - NFL: Denver, NY Giants, St Louis
