Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (-168, 9)

The stars seem aligned at U.S. Comiskular tonight as the white-hot Sox will be hosting the most surprising team in baseball. To start, even though it was against the Mariners, since returning to their band-box Monday Chicago is hitting .375 (.529 OB percentage) and averaging 11 runs per contest. Secondly, Tampa hurler Edwin Jackson (9-8, 3.97) has faced the Sox twice this year and has two loses with an 8.71 ERA. Conversely, southpaw John Danks has been flawless in his two starts against the Rays sporting a sub-one ERA and holding Joe Maddon's squad to a .188 average. Throw-in that Danks accomplished this while facing Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford and tough not invest on the hottest team in the American League over the last 11 games.

        Pick: White Sox

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles (+175, 10 1/2)

While Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.35) seems to have found the fountain of youth this season, he might actually be in Cy Young consideration if he reversed his fortunes against the Orioles. In two starts, Moose is 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA and allowing the vets from Baltimore to hit .448. Looking even closer, many of the Orioles have improved their contract negations because of their success against Mussina over their career (Brian Roberts .476, Kevin Millar .439, Melvin Mora .326, Nick Markakis .313, Aubrey Huff .308). As for the third worst team-ERA in all of baseball, Baltimore just recalled Radhames Liz (10 starts – 7.47), who hasn't even been that impressive in Triple-A (3-7, 3.62), and the last time he stepped foot in Camden Yards allowed seven hits, six earned runs, and walked four in just over five innings. You smelling a softball slugfest gentlemen?

        Pick: Over

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants (-225, 7)

In four starts against the Padres, Tim Linceum has allowed three runs in 26.1 innings and held batters to a .191 clip. Combined with the fact San Diego ranks 28th in runs scored and has lost five of their last six, and it's pretty safe to assume Linceum enters tonight's contest with plenty of confidence. As for the Padres, starter Cha Seung Baek (4-8, 4.99) has some of the most amazing stats this season. Every one of Baek's loses have come at home this season, while he is unblemished on the road (4-0, 3.72). Of course nobody will mistake the South Korean for Tom Seaver, but considering he's coming off an impressive outing on national television last Sunday (six innings, four hits, and one earned run) and will be facing one of the two teams that actually has less runs scored this season than the Padres, tough not to think the first team to three tonight wins.

        Pick: Under

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Astros: After a slow start to the season, Roy Oswalt has found his grove. Oswalt is 6-2 with two no-decisions in his last 10 starts and the Astros have won five consecutive games with him on the mound. Oswalt has been particularly nasty in his last three starts, allowing just four runs in 22 innings of work. In his career versus the Mets, Oswalt is 5-4 with a 3.71 ERA. Even though he?s been on fire of late, the OVER is 4-1-1 in Oswalt?s last six starts.

Astros are 10-4 in their last 14 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-4 in Houston's last 13 Friday games.

Key Injuries - 2B Kaz Matsui (.285; back) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Carlos Lee (.314; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Mets (-210, O/U 7.5): Johan Santana hasn?t always received a lot of run support this season but the Mets have gotten their money?s worth out of the former CY Young Award winner. Santana hasn?t dropped a game since June 28, a tough 3-2 loss to the Yankees. In his last 10 starts, Santana has given up more than three runs only once. Santana has been tough at Shea, where he?s 5-3 with a strong 2.41 ERA this season. However, his last three home starts have all gone OVER the total.

Mets are 9-1 in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings at New York.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Tampa Bay Rays at Chicago White Sox [8:10 PM ET]

Rays: After winning four consecutive starts, Edwin Jackson lost his last outing against Texas but it was far from his fault. Jackson took the loss despite holding the Rangers to just one run over six innings. In his last 25.2 innings of work, Jackson has only given up a total of nine runs. Jackson hasn?t had any success against the White Sox over his career. In three starts he?s 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA. The UNDER is 5-1 in Jackson?s last six road starts.

Rays are 16-5 in their last 21 games overall.
The UNDER is 20-7 in Tampa Bay's last 27 road games.

Key Injuries - 3B Evan Longoria (.278; wrist) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Carl Crawford (.273; hand) is OUT for the season.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

White Sox (-165, O/U 9): John Danks is coming off an impressive performance versus Oakland, getting the win after allowing just one run in six innings of work. In his last three starts, Danks has given up just four runs in 19.2 innings pitched. He?s actually been better on the road than at home, where he?s just 4-4 on the season. However, Danks owns Tampa, going 3-0 with an impressive 2.50 ERA against the Rays. After the OVER had cashed in four straight outings with Danks on the mound, the UNDER is now 3-0 in his last three starts.

White Sox are 40-13 in their last 53 home games.
White Sox are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings at Chicago.

Key Injuries - White Sox DH Jim Thome (.251; leg) is probable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Minnesota Twins at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Twins: Despite not pitching great, Glen Perkins has won his last two starts and three of his last four. During that span Perkins has allowed 13 runs over 26.1 innings. Perkins has allowed four runs or more in four of his last five starts but the Twins are 3-2 thanks to an offense that has provided him with strong run support all season. Perkins is 3-1 in seven starts on the road, although his ERA is 4.60. The OVER is 3-1 the last four times Perkins has taken the mound.

Twins are 13-3 in their last 16 Friday games.
Twins are 9-3 in Perkins' last 12 starts.

Key Injuries - SS Adam Everett (.211; hand) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Angels (-170, O/U 8.5): Joe Saunders has received three no-decisions in a row but he?s pitched pretty well in those games, giving up seven runs over 18 innings of work. The Angels lost to the Indians in Saunders last start but before that the team had won five consecutive games with him on the mound. Saunders has baffled the Twins both times he?s faced them in his career, going 2-0 with a minuscule 1.20 ERA. In his last 10 starts, the UNDER has a slight 6-4 advantage.

Angles are 21-9 in their last 30 games on grass.
Angels are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - 3B Maicer Izturis (.269; thumb) is OUT for the season.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

                Write-up

                Friday, August 22

I'm not a big fan of investing in summer games, but people have asked for some insight so here goes, as little as it is............

-- Will Brady play? Patriots are deficient without him. Eagles split their first two preseason games, while New England has lost its two games, outscored 43-25. Kolb/Feeley give Philly as good a depth at QB as there is in the NFL.

-- Falcons lost couple of close games so far this summer; would think Ryan gets lot more reps here. Titans have to be worrying about Young's passing; he just hasn't been accurate so far this summer. Tennessee did win its two games, by total of 51-29.

-- Cowboys lost 28-16 at Houston LY; they're 0-2 so far this year in preseason, would expect better effort in this game. Houston is 2-0 so far in preseason, escaping with couple of close wins. Third preseason game is where team try their hardest in summer.

-- Packers were crushed at Candlestick last week; they have to be concerned with their total lack of QB experience as season starts. Broncos split their first two games- they've won six of last seven preseason home games.
