Two of the National League's best pitchers will face each other on Wednesday night when the Diamondbacks play host to the Padres. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

Event of the day . . .

The Padres are going nowhere this season, even in the weak NL West division. That hasn't helped ace Jake Peavy in the win-loss column, as he's 9-8 overall and the team is just 4-6 in his last 10 trips to the mound. However, the righthander gave up more than three earned runs in just one of those 10 contests, lowering his ERA on the season to 2.61. Peavy faced the Diamondbacks back on July 5, and took no chances in securing the win - he held Arizona scoreless on three hits over seven innings.

Peavy's opponent in Wednesday night's contest will be D-Backs second banana Dan Haren, who pitches in the shadow of Cy Young candidate Brandon Webb. Haren has picked up the victory in four of his last five starts, and he's coming off a strong outing against the Rockies (two earned runs on seven hits over eight innings) which lowered his ERA to only 2.96. The righthander took on the Padres on July 4 and was the hard-luck loser after allowing just two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings.

Non-event of the day . . .

We go from Peavy vs. Haren to . . . Robertson vs. Millwood. Detroit's Nate Robertson is 7-9 on the season with a 5.87 ERA, while Texas' Kevin Millwood is 6-7 with a 5.58 ERA so far this year. Those two veteran hurlers will try to keep the ball in the park on Wednesday night when the Rangers host the Tigers. Detroit has lost six of Robertson's past 10 outings, and Texas has taken the loss in each of Millwood's past four starts.

Also on the schedule . . .

Minnesota's Francisco Liriano (3-3, 4.97 ERA) will try to add to Oakland's woes when he takes on Dallas Braden (3-2, 4.50 ERA) on Wednesday night. Also on the American League schedule: Seattle at the White Sox, Boston at Baltimore, Kansas City at Cleveland, the Yankees at Toronto, and the Angels at Tampa Bay.

The Mets and Braves will clash in New York on Wednesday, with Mike Pelfrey (11-8, 3.91 ERA) going up against Jair Jurrjens (11-8, 3.15 ERA). Other National League games on the day: Houston at Milwaukee, Washington at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at the Cubs, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, Colorado at the Dodgers, and Florida at San Francisco.

News from the wire . . .

The Dodgers bolstered their starting rotation by picking up Greg Maddux from the Padres; the future Hall of Fame righthander went 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA for San Diego this season . . . the Bengals decided to re-sign troubled wide receiver Chris Henry, who is suspended until Week 5 of the regular season; Henry's signing gives the team some insurance in case Chad Johnson's shoulder injury is worse than first reported.

Peek at the future . . .

Maddux had been scheduled to pitch for the Padres against the D-Backs on Thursday; instead they'll have to find someone else to take on Brandon Webb (18-4, 2.85 ERA) . . . Kyle Orton has been named the Bears' starting QB, and he'll lead the team into their preseason contest against the Niners on Thursday . . . the PGA Tour's playoffs begin with The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey on Thursday morning.

Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Game might be over by time you read this, but USA is solid 32-point favorite over Australia in 8am game Wednesday, in a quarterfinal game. Australia crushed Lithuania last game.

-- Not scoring at home against Ian Snell isn't going to help to get Cardinals into the playoffs; bad loss for the Redbirds.

-- Adam Dunn homered in Arizona's win vs San Diego, Dunn is a guy who could have helped a lot of contenders.

-- Nationals have now lost 11 games in a row- horrible team.

-- Tampa Rays didn't get hit in first five innings, but rallied to win 4-2 on 8th-inning hit by Aybar, Longoria's replacement. They're now 13-1 at home when Shields starts. Rays' magic number to clinch better record than Bronx Bombers is now at an astoundingly low 27.

-- Ricky Nolasco allowed cheesy 1st inning hit, then got the next 21 guys out, as Florida squashed the Giants, 6-0.

Wednesday's List of 13: Runnin' bases in National League

16) Nationals— This team makes older citizens of DC yearn for days of Eddie Brinkman and Tim Cullen, when the Senators played at RFK. Austin Kearns bats in middle of lineup for this team; he is hitting .218. People of Montreal wouldn’t recognize this once-spunky team.

15) Pirates-- Lead the league in Laroches (Adam/Andy) but nothing else. Luckily for them, Steelers open in two weeks, and then no one will care. Actually, doubt too many care now. I’ll say this again; handing Nady and Marte to Bronx was a bad message sent by management.

14) Braves—Things have gotten so bad, they got shut out by Barry Zito (28-38 as a Giant) Monday night. Looks like John Scheurholz knew when to get out, right before bottom fell out.

13) Padres—Mid-range payroll will get slashed further next year because the owner is in midst of a messy divorce. Are they adamant about keeping fences so far away from home plate? If so, they should stockpile fast guys, line drive hitters.

12) Reds—Another losing season, but look at their players, and there is hope Biggest need is a veteran catcher to work with all these young pitchers. Why are they trading for Micah Owings if he is on DL?

11) Giants—Really need some good infielders and one big bat. They’re out of race, so Bochy should also stop pushing his starting pitchers over 115-120 pitch mark. How does that help them for the future? Zito has worked hard, is pitching better second half of season.

10) Rockies—This year’s Season from Hell will be followed by next year’s Season of Decision, when they'll decide what to do about signing Matt Holliday, as they plot their future. They’ll have to decide if this year was a fluke, or last year. Ubaldo Jimenez has been good find on the mound.

9) Astros—In his last three starts, Brandon Backe allowed 11-3-11 runs; 25 of the 80 batters he faced (31.3%) scored. Still, Houston has placed better in last three weeks, despite losing Carlos Lee for year.

8) Marlins—Good hitting and starting pitching; defense is suspect, bullpen is getting worn out. Freddi Gonzalez is a solid manager. Getting starting pitchers Johnson/Sanchez back has given team a lift.

7) Diamondbacks—They had to trade prospects for Adam Dunn, while big market rival Dodgers got Manny Ramirez for free (Andy Laroche) basically and they’re not even paying his salary. Sometimes life ain’t fair, but Dunn has given Snakes a lift, and that’s good.

6) Phillies— Jimmy Rollins ripped the home fans. In offensive funk for last month; with their pitching, they can’t afford it. Luckily for them, the hideous Nationals are now in town. Time for everyone to get healthy.

5) Cardinals—Have really gotten more out of what they have than any team in NL this season. Still think the pitcher batting 8th thing is misguided, but if the players think it gives them a little edge, then its worth it. Skip Schumacher has quietly had pretty darn good year.

4) Brewers— Never have seen a good team with such hideous infield defense; Braun’s back is flaring up again. They show no regard for Sabathia’s future; he threw 130 pitches Monday night, which I’m sure just thrilled his agent.

3) Metropolitans—Bully team. Mets are +107 in runs scored in first three innings, +8 in middle innings, but -52 from 7th inning on. Did nothing to add talent for stretch run, other than trading for Ayala from Nats. Bullpen is terrible, and now Wagner is out longer than expected. Not getting their $138M worth.

2) Dodgers—You don’t get handed a Hall of Famer for nothing and not jump in the ratings. Manny leads majors in RBI since he was traded. Getting Casey Blake was highly underrated move. Broxton has been adequate replacement at closer, and now they went and got Greg Maddux.

1) Cubs— Explosive offense was evident Sunday, when 2-0 deficit in 7th became 9-2 laugher very quickly. Seem to have everything, as well as a manager who has won it all. Fukudome hasn’t had good second half, could find himself on the bench soon. This team is that good.

Peavy has struggled against Arizona over his career, going just 11-10 with a 4.73 ERA. The UNDER is money with Peavy on the mound, going 8-1-1 in his last 10 outings.

There is a silver lining, however. He’s 5-2 lifetime against the Dodgers with a strong 2.69 ERA. You can expect a lot of runs with Francis on the mound. In his last five starts, the OVER is 4-1.

Liriano, who missed all of last season with Tommy John surgery, has conceded 11 hits and one HR in his last three outings. He also has 15 strikeouts against seven walks in that period.

TRIPLE BYPASS FOR YAZ

Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, was resting comfortably after having triple bypass heart surgery. Yastrzemski, who turns 69 on Friday, had the operation at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent tests after experiencing chest pains in the morning, said his spokesman, Dick Gordon. The popular Yaz was an 18-time All-Star and spent his entire career with the Boston Red Sox, taking over left field for Ted Williams in 1961. He won the Triple Crown in 1967, hitting .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs. Behind the AL MVP, the Red Sox won their first pennant since 1946, but lost the World Series in Game 7.

MADDUX REDUX

The Dodgers reacquired Greg Maddux from the San Diego Padres, getting the future Hall of Famer and cash for two minor leaguers to be named or cash. The 42-year-old right-hander first joined the Dodgers on July 31, 2006. Manager Joe Torre said Maddux will start Friday night in Philadelphia. Maddux, ninth in baseball history with 353 victories, is 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA in 26 starts this season.

RECORD WIN

Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka got his 30th career win, most ever by a Japanese-born pitcher in his first two major league seasons. Hideo Nomo had 29 in 1995-96.

STOPPER SHUT DOWN

Orioles All-Star closer George Sherrill was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation. Sherrill had an MRI on Tuesday, 24 hours after complaining of stiffness in his pitching arm. Sherrill, who has 31 saves, has pitched 50 1-3 innings this season; his previous career high was 45 2-3 innings with Seattle last year. ... Billy Wagner has more pain and swelling in his pitching elbow, and the New York Mets' All-Star closer is out indefinitely. Wagner had an MRI that revealed additional inflammation in his left elbow - an alarming sign after he spent most of the past two weeks resting his ailing arm. The 37-year-old lefty is 0-1 with a 2.30 ERA and 27 saves in 34 chances.

SEASON OVER?

Cardinals reliever Jason Isringhausen, twice demoted from the closer role this season, is likely out for the rest of the season with an elbow injury.The 35-year-old Isringhausen had an MRI and left Busch Stadium after consulting with team medical personnel. He'll be placed on the disabled list for the second time on Wednesday. Isringhausen is 12-for-19 in save chances and 1-5 with a 5.70 ERA. He has 293 career saves but only one since May 5.

OOPS

Johnny Damon allowed two balls to glance off his glove, including an eighth-inning drive by Marco Scutaro that became the go-ahead double in Toronto's 2-1 victory over the Yankees. With the score tied 1-all Scutaro hit a deep drive to center. Damon, the center fielder, settled under the ball on the warning track, but it ticked off the top of his glove and off the wall, allowing Joe Inglett to score. Disgusted, Damon took off his glove and tossed it to the ground after throwing the ball to the infield.

HOMER TIME

Adam Dunn homered in his Arizona home debut, powering the Diamondbacks to a 7-6 victory over San Diego. Dunn, acquired by Arizona from the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 11, made it 6-2 with a towering two-run homer in the fourth. Dunn tied Philadelphia's Ryan Howard for the NL lead with 33 and moved within two homers of Carlos Quentin of the Chicago White Sox for the major league lead.

I'M SORRY

B.J. Upton apologized for a "mental lapse'' on the bases, saying he didn't want to become a distraction for the first-place Tampa Bay Rays. Benched three times in the past two weeks for not hustling, Upton looked shocked Monday night when he was thrown out at second base on what should have been a routine double.

SLUMP

Brewers starter Ben Sheets lost for the fourth time in his last five starts. The right-hander gave up five runs on five hits inn six innings. He struck out seven and walked one in a 5-2 loss to the Astros.

THE K CORNER

Kevin Slowey had a career-high 12 strikeouts in the Twins' 13-2 win over the Athletics after striking out just three hitters in his previous two starts combined.
