    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, August 19

A battle of American League division leaders is on tap for Tuesday night as the Tampa Bay Rays play host to the Los Angeles Angels. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

The Angels are running away with the AL West title this season - unless the Rangers can find some consistency Los Angeles will likely be the only team in that division that ends up above the .500 mark. The Rays find themselves a little more challenged from the likes of the Red Sox (and potentially the Yankees) in the AL East race, but they've already managed to set the franchise mark for victories in a single season.

James Shields (10-7, 3.75 ERA) will get the ball for Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, and the Rays have picked up the win in each of his last three outings. In fact, Tampa Bay is 8-2 over Shields' last 10 trips to the mound. The righthander has faced Los Angeles twice already this season, getting knocked around for earned six runs in a loss on June 10, and tossing nine shutout, one-hit innings in a win back on May 9.

Ervin Santana (13-5, 3.49 ERA) will start for the Angels. The righthander is coming off a no-decision versus the Mariners in which he gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6 1-3 innings of work. Santana had won each of his previous two starts, and Los Angeles is 6-4 over his past 10 outings. Santana faced the Rays back on May 11, giving up five earned runs on nine hits over 5 2-3 innings to get tagged with the loss.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The Royals and the Indians will continue their fight for fourth place in the AL Central when they hook up in Cleveland on Tuesday night. Kansas City is scheduled to send Luke Hochevar (6-11, 5.44 ERA) to the mound in that contest, while Cleveland will counter with Anthony Reyes (1-1, 2.19 ERA). Reyes was picked up from the Cardinals to provide a stop-gap for the Tribe's rotation through the end of their wasted season.

    Also on the schedule . . .

Daisuke Matsuzaka (14-2, 2.74 ERA) will look to pitch the Red Sox past the Orioles on the road on Tuesday. Other American League matchups on the schedule: the Yankees at Toronto, Detroit at Texas, Oakland at Minnesota, and Seattle at the White Sox.

There's also a full slate of National League games on Tuesday, highlighted by the Brian Moehler (8-4, 3.97 ERA) / Ben Sheets (11-6, 3.00 ERA) duel in the Astros/Brewers matchup. Also on the Senior Circuit schedule: Washington at Philadelphia, Atlanta at the Mets, Cincinnati at the Cubs, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, Colorado at the Dodgers, and Florida at San Francisco.

    News from the wire . . .

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson hurt his shoulder on Sunday night but is expected to be ready to play when Week 1 of the regular season rolls around . . . Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson is expected to make his preseason debut for the team on Friday; he's been out with a groin injury . . .Tigers reliever Todd Jones went right back on the disabled list on Sunday . . . the Nationals traded reliever Luis Ayala to the Mets.

    Peek at the future . . .

It'll be Jered Weaver (10-9, 4.47 ERA) taking on Matt Garza (10-7, 3.63 ERA) in the Angels/Rays game on Wednesday night . . . the USA men's hoops teams will compete against the Australians in the quarterfinal round of the Olympic tournament early on Wednesday morning; the semifinals of the tourney will then take place on Friday morning, with the gold medal game set to be played at 2:30am ET on August 24.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Kyle Orton will open season as Bears' starting QB-- think the nitwits at NBC foresaw Orton-Sorgi QB matchup for the first Sunday Night NFL game on September 7?

-- Looks like Dodgers are going to trade for Greg Maddux.

-- Mets' bullpen just went 6-1 on road trip, after bullpen let in five runs in three IP in 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh. Road trip was at Nationals, Pirates, so hard to gauge how good Mets are.

-- Next up for Mets are the woeful Braves, who got shut out by Barry Zito Monday. More wins for the first-place Mets.

-- David Price, prize prospect of the Rays, made his second AAA start, allowing three runs in five IP, in game Durham later lost 9-8 in last inning. He has a 5.00 ERA so far in AAA.

-- CC Sabathia threw a 130-pitch complete game tonight, as Brewers continue to milk every ounce of energy he has. That thump you heard was Sabathia's agent's ulcer when he saw the 130-pitch count for his free agent-to-be client.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

        13) BJ Upton just doesn't get it; he got tagged out jogging to second base Monday night, after assuming he hit a home run that hit the left field wall. Upton has been benched twice for not hustling this month. He stayed in this game-- sounds like the Rays' players will police this incident, whatever that means

        12) Tampa Bay Rays are 46-17 at home, and Joe Maddon is the Manager of the Decade. Case closed.

        11) Maddon's Rays led 7-3 in ninth inning Sunday night, but Rangers had bases loaded and Josh Hamilton up. Maddon had his pitcher walk Hamilton intentionally, making it 7-4, and at the same time, bringing winning run to plate. Takes onions to do that, but Wheeler struck own Marlon Byrd, and Rays won.

        10) Some of you probably think I talk too much about the Rays but in the last forty years, this is baseball's best story. Too bad mainstream media just doesn't care. The only time this team did not finish last, they were still 33 games out of first, now they're 4.5 games up on the morning of August 19. Amazing.

        9) Doyle Alexander once went 9-0 for the '87 Tigers to help get them in playoffs, but problem is, they gave Braves John Smoltz so the price for one playoff appearance was steep. Roommate for Smoltz before he got traded? ESPN's Steve Phillips.

        8) Rangers' star Ian Kinsler has a hernia, may be done for year.

        7) Congrats to old buddy Steve Sauers, who is now assistant hoop coach at Iona College. Steve had been an assistant at both Marist and Seton Hall-- good hire by the Gaels.

        6) I'm wondering if Phil Dawson's 56-yard FG Monday night is the longest field goal in preseason history; Giants led 30-3 last night at 11:00 mark of 2nd quarter. Lousy showing by Browns. The game may not have counted, but Brown QB Anderson's concussion is very real.

        5) I'm guessing when teams meet in Week 6 of regular season, the game's not going to end 37-34.

        4) There is actually Olympic ping pong on TV-- announcer just told us how important scouting is in ping pon-- I mean, in table tennis. The referee has shades on and a Carolina blue suitcoat. Looks like a guy waiting for his date to go out clubbing.

        3) Hockey announcer Bill Clement is handling the play-by-play duties for ping pong; did you know Egypt has taken over for Nigeria as the dominent ping pong program in Africa?

        2) Imagine going to party where there's a ping pong table, and one of these Olympic ping pong dudes is there only you don't know it, and you challenge him to a game, figuring, "Hey, back in my college days, I was 2nd-best guy in my dorm." Whoops.

        1) Eldrick Woods may not have played golf since winning at the US Open, but he still leads the FedEx Cup standings.

Dodgers are bringing back Greg Maddux

Dodgers agree to trade with Padres that will return the future Hall of Famer to L.A., where he also pitched in 2006.
By Dylan Hernandez, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

          August 19, 2008

Greg Maddux is on his way back to Los Angeles to try to help the Dodgers make another push for the postseason.

The Dodgers reached an agreement with the San Diego Padres on Monday to acquire the 42-year-old right-hander in exchange for two players to be named, according to sources familiar with the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade is pending league approval.

The Dodgers acquired Maddux on the day of the 2006 non-waiver trade deadline and reached the playoffs that season.

The four-time Cy Young Award winner, who is 6-9 this season with a 3.99 earned-run average, is expected to report to Dodger Stadium today for the start of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti and team spokesperson Josh Rawitch said Monday night that the deal wasn't complete.

Because league rules prohibit team officials from discussing players who are on or have cleared waivers, Rawitch and Colletti could not acknowledge that the Dodgers were in talks with the Padres on a potential deal.

Maddux, who is earning $10 million this season, cleared waivers earlier this month.

The future Hall of Famer will probably move into the Dodgers' rotation, which became a man short Thursday when opening-day starter Brad Penny was moved to the disabled list for the second time this season because of shoulder inflammation. Manager Joe Torre said he did not expect Penny, who was sidelined for two months in his first stint on the DL, to pitch again this season.

Maddux, who has 353 career victories, has pitched well in his last three starts, posting a 2-1 record and 1.89 ERA in that span. In his last start, he dropped a decision to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday even though he held them to a run and five hits over seven innings.

He has had trouble away from pitcher-friendly Petco Park, where he has a 2.62 ERA. His road ERA is 5.75.

To make the deal happen, Maddux had to waive his full no-trade clause.

He told the Padres in the preceding months that he would accept only a deal to a contender on the West Coast, prompting talks between the Padres and Dodgers leading up to the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Maddux owns a home in Orange County.

Maddux was 6-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 12 starts for the Dodgers in the final two months of the 2006 season, helping them secure the National League wild-card berth. The Dodgers were swept by the New York Mets in a best-of-five-game division series that year.

Maddux will be the Dodgers' third significant addition of the last month, the others being left fielder Manny Ramirez and third baseman Casey Blake.

The Dodgers will be paying at least a part of the remaining portion of Maddux's contract, making him the first of four trade acquisitions this season whose entire salary isn't being picked up by his former club.

Los Angeles Angels at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Angels: Ervin Santana hasn’t been sharp over his last five starts, going 2-2 with one no-decision. Over that span, Santana has allowed 17 runs in 33.1 innings of work. Overall, the Angels are 2-3 in those games. Santana is a strong 9-2 with an ERA of 3.45 away from home this season. In his career against the Rays, Santana is 3-3 but his ERA is a lofty 6.21. Santana was hammered in his last outing versus Tampa, allowing nine hits and five runs over 5.2 innings.

Angels are 7-3 in their last 10 games following a loss.
The OVER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 games vs. AL East.

Key Injuries - 3B Maicer Izturis (.269; thumb) is OUT for the season.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-129, O/U 8): James Shields has been consistent for the Rays all season long. In his last 10 starts, Shields has allowed three runs or less eight times. He’s been a beast at Tropicana Field, going 7-1 with a stellar 2.21 ERA in 13 starts this year. The rays have won three straight games with Shields on the mound and are 8-2 in his last 10 starts. The UNDER has been a solid bet when Shields pitches of late. The UNDER is 5-2 in his last seven starts.

Rays are 42-10 in their last 52 home games.
The UNDER is 6-3 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - 3B Evan Longoria (.278; wrist) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Carl Crawford (.273; hand) is OUT for the season.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Astros: Brian Moehler has been on fire lately, going 3-0 with one no-decision in his last four starts. The Astros are a perfect 4-0 in those games and 8-2 in Moehler’s last 10 starts. Moehler has only allowed seven runs in his last 26 innings of work, while walking just one batter over that stretch. Moehler’s hot streak could come to an end tonight. He hasn’t had much success against the Brewers, going 3-8 with a 4.95 ERA. The UNDER is 4-2 in Moehler’s last six starts.

Astros are 16-6 in their last 22 games overall.
Astros are 3-12 in the last 15 meetings at Milwaukee.

Key Injuries - OF Carlos Lee (.314; finger) is on the 15-day DL.
              2B Kaz Matsui (.285; back) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Brewers (-240, O/U 8): Ben Sheets takes the hill for the Brewers tonight after losing three of his last four outings. Sheets hasn’t been horrible over that span but he has allowed 12 runs over 28 innings, which is high for a pitcher of his caliber. Sheets has seen a lot of the Astros over his career. This will be his 28th start against Houston after compiling a record a 12-8 to go along with a solid 3.72 ERA. The UNDER has cashed five consecutive times with Sheets on the mound.

Brewers are 10-3 in their last 13 games on grass.
The OVER is 8-2-1 in Milwaukee's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Ryan Braun (.301; back) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Ubaldo Jimenez has now lost two straight starts after winning four consecutive games and six of seven. In his last two outings, Jimenez has been touched up for 19 hits and 10 runs in just 11 innings. Jimenez isn’t the same pitcher away from Coors field, where he’s only 3-7 with a 4.72 ERA. He is 5-3 in his career against the Dodgers, although his ERA is over five.

Rockies are 2-7 in their last 9 games following a win.
The OVER is 7-3 in Colorado's last 10 games following a win.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-140, O/U 8): Hiroki Kuroda has been magnificent in his last three starts, allowing a total of three runs over 22.1 innings. He also struck out 17 batters in those three games. Kuroda has been tough to beat at Dodger Stadium, where he’s 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA on the season. Kuroda has started two games against the Rockies but neither of them went very well. He has a career 7.50 ERA versus Colorado. The UNDER is 3-0 in Kuroda’s last three starts.

Dodgers are 8-1 in their last 9 home games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 games vs. NL West.

                Tuesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

Hiroki Kuroda, Los Angeles Dodgers (7-8, 3.88)

Don't be fooled by Kuroda's record, he has been sizzling at home recently. He is 2-1 in his last three home starts and is 2-0 and has a 1.22 ERA in his last three overall.

Kuroda has relinquished just three earned runs in his last 22.1 IP and is fresh off a spectacular two-hit triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies. He also has 26 strikeouts in his last five home starts.

The Dodgers are 5-2 in Kuroda's last seven home starts and are 43-20 in their last 63 home games against the Colorado Rockies.

The Reds are 0-4 in Fogg's last four starts and are 2-5 in their last seven at Wrigley Field.

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Tuesday, Aug. 19

New York at Toronto (7:05 p.m. EDT). Darrell Rasner (5-9, 5.18 ERA) needs to step it up if the Yankees want to contend in the AL wild card race. He'll face A.J. Burnett (15-9, 4.67), who has won five straight starts for the Blue Jays.

                    STARS

                    Monday

                    - Jason Bay, Red Sox, went 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs in a 6-3 victory over Baltimore.

                    - Barry Zito, Giants, allowed five hits in seven innings of a 5-0 win over the Braves.

                    - CC Sabathia, Brewers, improved his perfect record with Milwaukee, pitching another complete game in a 9-3 victory over Houston.

                    - Gary Sheffield, Tigers, went 3-for-5 with his 13th home run in an 8-7 win over the Rangers.

                    - Alexei Ramirez, White Sox, homered and drove in four runs in Chicago's 13-5 win over Seattle.

                    TRADED
Greg Maddux is headed back to the Dodgers. San Diego and Los Angeles agreed to a trade that puts the 353-game winner in a pennant race again, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made. It was unclear what the last-place Padres would receive in return for the 42-year-old Maddux, who will join a Dodgers team tied with Arizona atop the NL West. The right-hander is 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA in 26 starts for San Diego this year.

                    SLAMMING

Nick Swisher, Orlando Cabrera, Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin hit home runs to help the White Sox beat the Mariners 13-5. Quentin's was hit major league-leading 35th homer, and Ramirez, a rookie, had a three-run shot a night after hitting a grand slam. Chicago, which leads the majors with 182 homers, hit four homers for the second straight game.

                    BAY WATCH

Jason Bay hit two homers and drove in four runs, helping the Red Sox beat the Orioles 6-3. Since coming over from Pittsburgh on July 31 in the three-team trade that sent Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bay is batting .348 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 16 games.

                    CG FOR CC

CC Sabathia improved his perfect record with Milwaukee, pitching another complete game in a 9-3 victory over Houston. Sabathia also hit a two-run single in a five-run fourth inning. He is 8-0 with a 1.60 ERA and five complete games in nine starts for the Brewers since they acquired him from Cleveland in a July 7 trade. Last year's AL Cy Young Award winner has won 11 straight decisions overall.

                    BASERUNNING GAFFE

B.J. Upton, who has been benched three times in the past two weeks for not hustling, made another baserunning gaffe in the Rays' 6-4 win over the Angels. Upton hit a fourth-inning drive to left off Jon Garland and broke into a trot out of the batter's box, apparently thinking it would be a home run. Instead, the ball hit the fence on a hop. Upton casually rounded first and jogged toward second with Angels first baseman Mark Teixeira following up the line to meet left fielder Juan Rivera's throw to an uncovered base. Teixeira fielded the ball on a bounce and made the tag just before a surprised Upton touched the bag. But unlike last Friday in Texas, Upton wasn't removed from the game by manager Joe Maddon.

                    AILING

Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sports hernia, and could be headed for season-ending surgery. Kinsler, who was leading the majors with 165 hits and 102 runs, had an MRI on Monday that revealed the problem on the left side of his groin. He will be examined by a specialist in Dallas, probably on Tuesday. ... Athletics ace Justin Duchscherer left the game against the Twins in the third inning with right hip pain. Duchscherer had season-ending surgery on the same hip halfway through last season and said he began to have some discomfort during his last start against Tampa Bay. He'll fly back to Oakland on Tuesday for more tests. ... Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew was out of the lineup against the Orioles because of lingering soreness in his lower back.

                    SCHILLING DONE?

Curt Schilling said he's leaning "very heavily'' toward retirement and is waiting until spring training approaches to see if he wants to try to pitch again. The Boston Red Sox right-hander, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on June 23, said in his most recent blog entry that his shoulder "is getting better fast'' and "I've still got a rather lengthy amount of time before I decide anything.''

                    RAYS VS. FAY

The Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels were holding out hope that their game scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field will not be postponed because of Tropical Storm Fay. Team officials met Monday to pore over weather forecasts and discuss contingency plans that could include not playing the game and rescheduling it as part of a Wednesday doubleheader in the domed stadium.

                    SPEAKING

"I'll tell you one thing about tonight, he's hurting. He's hurting bad.'' - Rays designated hitter Cliff Floyd about teammate B.J. Upton after Upton's latest baserunning gaffe overshadowed a big Tampa Bay victory.

                    SEASONS

                    Aug. 19

1909 - The Philadelphia Phillies were rained out for the 10th consecutive day, a major league record.

1913 - The Chicago Cubs tagged Grover Alexander for nine straight hits and six runs for a 10-4 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1921 - Detroit's Ty Cobb got his 3,000th career hit at age 34, the youngest player to reach that plateau. The milestone hit was a single off Elmer Myers of the Boston Red Sox.

1951 - Eddie Gaedel, a 65-pound midget who was 3-foot-7, made his first and only plate appearance as a pinch-hitter for Frank Saucier of the St. Louis Browns. Gaedel, wearing No. 1/8, was walked on four pitches by Detroit Tigers pitcher Bob Cain and then was taken out for pinch-runner Jim Delsing. The gimmick by Browns owner Bill Veeck was completely legal, but later outlawed.

1957 - New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham announced that the team's board of directors had voted 9-1 in favor of moving to San Francisco.

1965 - Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds no-hit the Cubs 1-0, in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Chicago. Leo Cardenas homered in the 10th for the Reds. Earlier in the year, Maloney lost 1-0 in 11 innings after holding the Mets hitless for 10 before Johnny Lewis homered leading off the 11th.

1969 - Ken Holtzman of the Cubs blanked the Atlanta Braves with a 3-0 no-hitter at Wrigley Field. Ron Santo's three-run homer in the first inning provided the Cubs' offense.

1990 - Bobby Thigpen recorded his 40th save of the season as the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 4-2. Thigpen became the eighth - and fastest - to accomplish this feat.

1992 - Bret Boone made history when he became part of the first three-generation family to play in Major League Baseball. Boone is the grandson of Ray Boone, who played from 1948-60, and son of Bob Boone, from 1972-90. Bret, 23, completed the triangle when he started at second base for the Seattle Mariners against Baltimore.

2000 - Houston's Jeff Bagwell became the eighth player in major league history to record five straight seasons with 30 home runs, 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored. He hit two homers and drove in five runs in a 10-8 win over Milwaukee.

2002 - A rare event in the major leagues happened as all 10 games took less than three hours to play. The shortest was Bartolo Colon's two-hitter, which took just 1 hour, 55 minutes as Montreal defeated San Diego 4-0.

2005 - The Kansas City Royals dropped their 19th straight game, 4-0 to the Oakland Athletics, to move within two defeats of the American League record.

2007 - Johan Santana finished with a franchise-record 17 strikeouts in eight innings to help Minnesota edge Texas 1-0.

                    Today's birthdays: J.J. Hardy 26; Lance Cormier 28.

                          MLB

                          Tuesday, August 19

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-145, 8)

Considering the high-powered Fish have lost seven of 10, sliding four games back in the East, there wasn't a better time for a day off since they haven't had a break since Aug. 3. Tonight they face a porous Giants squad that finished up a cross-county series in Hot-lanta yesterday, and probably partied like it was 1999 on the plane after Barry Zito actually pitched seven innings of shutout ball. Ricky Nolasco (11-7, 3.88) toes the rubber for Florida and has been proving this elbow injuries of 2007 are a distant memory. As for the Giants, former reliever Kevin Correia (5.12, 2-6) takes the pill, but considering his battery-mate is also the clean-up hitter (Benji Molina – nine dingers), I'm guessing the confidence level isn't the same facing a team that has slugged 95 more home runs and scored 96 more runs this season.

                          Pick: Marlins

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs (-1 1/2, -130)

With the moneyline close to Ichiro's batting average, giving up the 1 1/2 makes this play reasonable and seemingly just as winnable. While blaming Dusty is an easy answer, Reds management needs to shutdown their 22-year-old phenom Johnny Cueto (8-11, 4.90) before they destroy his arm in his first MLB season (25 starts thus far). Cueto has magical stuff, but has struggled with his control and has allowed opponents to bat .300 when he's outside of Cincinnati (3-8, 5.29). The Cubs knocked him around for eight hits and five runs at Wrigley in early July and that was with Dunn and Griffey Jr. in the lineup. As for the almost unhittable Rich Harden (7-2, 2.17), with his inability to pitch much past the fifth you have to love that the bullpen had a day off Monday to keep them fresh for tonight.

                          Pick: Cubs

Oakland Athletics at Minnesota Twins (-200, 8 1/2)

With the White Sox winning again, the Twins will not take the A's lightly for a second straight night. Justin Duchscherer left midway through the third inning yesterday, forcing Oakland's already taxed bullpen to use all the arms they had available. Tonight, they'll hope 22-year-old Sean Gallagher (4-5, 4.50) can fight through the shoulder soreness that has bothered him lately (last three starts: 12 innings, 11 runs, 11 walks), not to mention the unexpected trade from the Cubbies has also left the free-spirit a little shaken mentally. On the bump for the Twins, Kevin Slowey (9-8, 3.94) has won three of his last four starts allowing two runs in 20.2 innings. With Oakland probably satisfied with winning the opener, expect the travel bug to catch-up with them and to look sluggish out of the gate tonight.

                          Pick: Twins
