    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, August 16

The National Football League rolls out more exhibition games on Saturday, including Brett Favre's Jets playing host to the Redskins. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

Favre apparently has a 'tired arm', but Jets coach Eric Mangini says that he will start the team's home game against the Redskins on Saturday nonetheless. Don't expect the 38-year-old quarterback to see much time on the field, though, as the Jets aren't going to want their prized acquisition to do too much before the games really start to count.

That means we'll get to see more of Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, and Erik Ainge, with Ainge possibly joining Chad Pennington on a train out of town if he can't beat out the unheralded Ratliff for the team's No. 3 quarterback job. As for the Redskins, starting quarterback Jason Campbell seems to be catching on to the team's new offense, and he should leave most of the work to his backups on Saturday night as well.

The oddsmakers have the Jets listed as 3-point home favorites in this preseason contest, with the game's total sitting at 35.5 points. Kickoff is 7:00pm ET at Giants Stadium, with Favre highlights scheduled to be shown approximately every 20 minutes on local and national sports shows for the following two to three days.

    Non-event of the day . . .

Peyton Manning is still sidelined for the Colts, and the Falcons won just four games all of last season. That hasn't built up much anticipation for the Indianapolis/Atlanta preseason clash at the Georgia Dome on Saturday night. The oddsmakers actually opened Indy as 1-point road favorites for that contest, but the latest lines have seen Atlanta favored by 2.5 points. The total for the game is pegged at 37.5 points.

    Also on the schedule . . .

Other NFL preseason games on Saturday include Miami at Jacksonville, Minnesota at Baltimore, San Diego at St. Louis, Arizona at Kansas City, Houston at New Orleans, Dallas at Denver, and Chicago at Seattle. As well, Favre's old team, the Packers, will play out west in San Francisco; Green Bay is a 1.5-point road favorite in that game.

The baseball games actually mean something Saturday, and the top pitching matchup looks like it'll be in Cleveland; the Indians' Fausto Carmona (5-4, 4.91 ERA) will take on Angels ace John Lackey (9-2, 3.15 ERA). Other American League games on the Saturday schedule include Kansas City at the Yankees, Seattle at Minnesota, the White Sox at Oakland, Toronto at Boston, Baltimore at Detroit, and Tampa Bay at Texas.

Over in the National League Sean Marshall (2-2, 3.55 ERA) will get a spot start for the Cubs on Saturday night, pitching on the road against the Marlins and Anibal Sanchez (1-2, 4.08 ERA). Also on the NL schedule: the Mets at Pittsburgh, Arizona at Houston, Colorado at Washington, St. Louis at Cincinnati, San Francisco at Atlanta, Philadelphia at San Diego, and Milwaukee at the Dodgers.

    News from the wire . . .

Braves starting pitcher Tom Glavine was activated from the disabled list on Thursday, was promptly pounded for seven runs by the Cubs, and is now back on the shelf . . . Dodgers starting pitcher Brad Penny is also back on the disabled list with a sore shoulder . . . Padres starting pitcher Chris Young is on the disabled list now as well; he has a strained forearm . . . the trade that sends forward Ron Artest to the Rockets was made official on Thursday.

    Peek at the future . . .

There are two NFL games on the Sunday schedule: Detroit at Cincinnati, and New England at Tampa Bay. The Giants will host the Browns on Monday . . . the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship begins its final round on Sunday morning . . . the Sprint Cup Series' 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway gets underway on Sunday afternoon . . . the Phillies and Cole Hamels (9-8, 3.32 ERA) will take on the Padres and Cha Seung Baek (4-7, 5.20 ERA) in Sunday night action.

          Baseball Today
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          SCOREBOARD

          Saturday, Aug. 16

Kansas City at New York Yankees (1:05 p.m. EDT). Zack Greinke (9-8, 4.09 ERA) and the Royals try to finally find some success at the big ballpark in the Bronx when they take on Sidney Ponson (7-3, 4.27) and the slumping Yankees.

          STARS

          Friday

          - Matt Garza, Rays, gave up two hits in his second career shutout, striking out nine in a 7-0 win over the Rangers.

          - Francisco Liriano, Twins, gave up two hits and two walks in seven innings, striking out five in a 9-3 rout of the Mariners. The two runs he allowed were unearned.

          - Cliff Lee, Indians, improved to 17-2 by giving up two runs and eight hits in a complete-game, 3-2 victory over the Angels.

          - Daryle Ward, Cubs, hit a pinch three-run homer in the ninth inning to give Chicago a 6-5 victory over the Marlins.

          - Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks, gave up four hits and two runs in eight innings with six strikeouts in a 12-2 win over the Astros.

          - Randy Winn, Giants, went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 5-1 win over the Braves.

          - Melvin Mora, Orioles, finished a double shy of the cycle, driving in four runs in an 11-2 victory over the Tigers.

          - Mike Pelfrey, Mets, pitched seven shutout innings in a 2-1 win over the Pirates.

          SIGNED AND DELIVERED

Several of the top picks in baseball's amateur draft agreed to contracts in the hours before the midnight deadline, including No. 2 selection Pedro Alvarez and the Pirates. Also agreeing were No. 4 pick Brian Matusz and the Orioles, No. 5 pick Buster Posey and the Giants and No. 7 pick Yonder Alonso and the Reds.

          GENERAL LEE

Cliff Lee became the AL's first 17-game winner by pitching his third complete game, a 3-2 victory over the Angels. Lee (17-2) struck out six and moved closer to becoming Cleveland's first 20-game winner since Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry did it in 1974. He also has a shot at giving Cleveland its second straight Cy Young Award winner after CC Sabathia.

          STILL NO NO-NO

Matt Garza didn't allow a hit against the slumping Rangers until a debatable call with two outs in the sixth inning, then finished with a two-hitter as the AL East-leading Rays won 7-0. Both of Garza's shutouts have come in his past four starts, but the franchise still doesn't have a no-hitter in its record book.

          WILD THING

Mariano Rivera's first wild pitch of the season - and second in six years - allowed the tiebreaking run to score in the ninth inning, giving the Royals a 4-3 win over the Yankees. Esteban German doubled with one out in the top of the ninth and moved to third on Mitch Maier's infield single. With Mike Aviles up, Rivera bounced a pitch that skipped off catcher Jose Molina and far enough behind the plate for German to scurry home without a play. "It was a sinker. I was trying to get a groundball. It just happened,'' Rivera said.

          FRIENDLY CONFINES

Daryle Ward connected off Marlins closer Kevin Gregg for a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the ninth inning that gave the Cubs a 6-5 victory and their ninth straight road win. The Cubs are finding success wherever they go, unbeaten on the road since a 9-2 loss at Arizona on July 22.

          WALK-OFF WIN

Pinch-hitter Kurt Suzuki hit a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4. Pinch-hitter Emil Brown doubled off Horacio Ramirez (1-2) leading off the ninth and pinch-runner Cliff Pennington was sacrificed to third. Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen replaced Ramirez with reliever D.J. Carrasco, who worked a full count on Suzuki before Oakland's catcher hit his sixth home run of the season over the left-field wall. Suzuki's second career walkoff home run and second pinch-hit homer this year gave the Athletics just their fourth win in the past 21 games.

          MORE MORA

Melvin Mora finished a double shy of the cycle, driving in four runs to pace Baltimore to an 11-2 victory over Detroit. Since the All-Star break, when he had a cortisone shot in his sore shoulder, Mora is hitting .404 (44-for-109) with seven home runs and 37 RBIs in 26 games.

          LIRIANO IS BACK

Francisco Liriano allowed no earned runs in seven solid innings in the Twins' 9-3 rout of Seattle, helping Minnesota win for the sixth time in eight games. Liriano won his third straight start since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester.

          I'LL DO THE HITTING

Carlos Quentin hit his 33rd home run for Chicago to tie Philadelphia's Ryan Howard for the major league lead. Meanwhile, Quentin's streak of being hit by a pitch ended at six games. Quentin became the only player since 1920 to get hit by a pitch in that many consecutive contests, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The White Sox lost 6-4 to the Athletics.

          WEBB WINS AGAIN

Brandon Webb struck out six in eight sharp innings, helping Arizona snap the Astros' eight-game winning streak with a 12-2 victory. Webb (18-4) won his seventh straight decision and fifth straight start against Houston. He was efficient, too, throwing 59 of 84 pitches for strikes.

          SPEAKING

"I've been a catcher, a broadcaster, a coach, a manager - I can't remember him throwing a wild pitch. You never see it.'' New York manager Joe Girardi after Mariano Rivera threw a wild pitch in the ninth inning that allowed the tiebreaking run to score in Kansas City's 4-3 win.

          SEASONS

          Aug. 16

1920 - Shortstop Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians was hit in the head with a pitch in the fifth inning by New York's Carl Mays. Chapman suffered a fractured skull and died the next day. It is the only field fatality in major league history.

1927 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees became the first player to clear the roof at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Ruth's home run came off White Sox pitcher Tommy Thomas in the 8-1 win.

1947 - Ralph Kiner hit three successive home runs to become the first Pirates player to ever accomplish the feat as Pittsburgh beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12-7 at Forbes Field.

1948 - Babe Ruth died of cancer in New York, at the age of 53.

1950 - Hank Thompson hit two inside-the-park home runs in the Giants' 16-7 rout of the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds.

1964 - Curt Flood of the St. Louis Cardinals had eight straight hits in a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers won the first game 3-0 and the Cardinals took the second, 4-0.

1967 - Jim Maloney of Cincinnati retired 19 consecutive Pirates but had to leave the game after he injured his ankle by stepping in a hole at Forbes Field. Billy McCool allowed two hits over the final 2 2-3 innings to give the Reds a 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh.

1996 - With 23,699 fans at the 25,644-seat Estadio Monterrey, the San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets 15-10 in the first major league regular-season game played outside the United States or Canada.

2005 - Bobby Bragan became the oldest manager of a pro baseball game when the 87-year-old managed the Fort Worth Cats of the Central League for one game against Coastal Bend. Hall of Famer Connie Mack previously held the record, but Bragan eclipsed Mack by eight days. Bragan was tossed out of the game in the third inning after he went on the field following the ejection of a player.

2006 - Bruce Froemming umpired his 5,000th major league game - second-most in big league history. Bill Klem worked 5,374 games from 1905-40.

          Today's birthday: Daric Barton 23.

            Streaking Starting Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Saturday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

            Streaking

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (13-5, 2.92)

The Cubs have created some separation atop the NL standings, partially due to Dempster's sensational campaign. He is 2-1 and has a 2.41 ERA in his last three starts and is 2-1 in his last four outside the Windy City.

Dempster is fresh off a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in which he registered six strikeouts and surrendered just two earned runs. He is also 1-1 and has a 2.40 ERA in 11 career starts against the Florida Marlins.

The Cubs are 7-1 in Dempster's last eight starts with five days of rest and are 17-8 in his last 25 overall.

            Slumping

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (8-13, 4.77)

Verlander has lost four straight and has relinquished 24 earned runs in that stretch. He also has a shaky 8.66 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in his last three starts.

Verlander is 1-2 in his last three home starts and is 5-6 overall at Comerica Park. He has also conceded three HRs in his last four home starts.

Detroit is 1-5 in Verlander's last six Saturday starts and is 1-6 in its last seven against the AL East.

Aaron Harang, Cincinnati Reds (3-12, 5.17)

Harang has just one win in his last 10 and is 0-2 in his last three with a 9.98 ERA. He has also relinquished 14 earned runs and five HRs in his last eight IP.

Harang is winless in his last three home starts and is 0-1 in one start this campaign against the St. Louis Cardinals. He is 5-7 with a 4.47 career-ERA against the Cardinals.

The Reds are 1-5 in Harang's last six starts versus the NL Central and are 1-4 in their last five against the Cardinals.

Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Indians [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Angels (-135, O/U 8.5): John Lackey hasn't lost a start since July 5 but strong run support has helped bail him out over his last seven appearances. Over that span, Lackey has given up a pedestrian 30 runs in 45.2 innings pitched. Lackey was hammered his last time out against Cleveland, allowing six runs in just five innings of work. However, the Angels offense outscored the Tribe 14-11 to capture the win. Lackey is a stellar 5-1 on the road this season with a 2.73 ERA. Six of Lackey's last seven starts have easily gone OVER the total.

Angels are 11-2 in Lackey's last 13 starts.
The OVER is 8-3 in LA's last 11 games overall.

Carmona has faced the Angels once his career, allowing just one run over six innings in that start. Carmona's last five outings have all easily gone OVER the total.

Mariners: Ryan Rowland-Smith comes out of the bullpen to make his fourth start of the season for the Mariners today. In his most recent outing versus Tampa Bay, Rowland-Smith took a no-decision after allowing four runs in just 5.2 innings. However, in his two prior starts, he had only given up two runs over nine innings. This will be Rowland-Smith's first career start versus the Twins.

However, over his last 10 starts Baker has been very consistent overall, allowing three runs or less seven times. Baker is 3-1 at home this year with a strong 2.83 ERA but he's 0-2 in four career starts against the Mariners. The OVER is 4-0 in Baker's last four starts.

Twins are 6-2 in their last 8 games overall.

However, Danks pitched well enough to win that game, allowing just two runs over seven innings. After four subpar performances, Danks has been strong in his last two outings versus the Red Sox and Tigers, allowing a total of three runs in 13.2 innings of work. Danks is 5-1 on the road this season and a perfect 3-0 in his career versus the A's to go along with a minuscule 1.35 ERA. The OVER is 4-2 in Danks' last four starts

Smith is 2-4 in nine home starts this year, although his ERA is a respectable 3.34. Smith was hit pretty hard his last time out against the White Sox back on July 5, allowing four runs over five innings. He also walked six batters in that game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres (+130, 8 1/2)

After being swept by Manny and Mia's wife, the Phillies desperately need to finish this road trip strong to keep pace with the Mets. Kyle Kendrick (10-6, 4.74) is too solid a pitcher to let the Padres hitters rough him up, while the offense is way overdue for an explosion. Especially with call-up Chad Reineke making his MLB debut after a plus-four ERA in AAA, look for the playoff chasing Phillies to remind San Diego there is a reason the 26 year-old (Reineke) hasn't been trotted out earlier.

                      Pick: Phillies

Chicago Cubs at Florida Marlins (-105, 9 1/2)

With the Cubbies on a four-game road win streak after another emotional one yesterday, you think Lou's boys might have enjoyed a little Miami Beach night life on Friday? Sean Marshall makes a spot-start for the Northsiders, and with the young Marlins desperate to fight their way back in the East race, look for them to capitalize on the nerves of a youngster booted from the rotation just a year ago. On the mound for the Fish, 2006 phenom Anibal Sanchez (last start: 7 innings, 6 hits, and 8 Ks) seems ready for a breakout performance and finally has the OK to pitch deep into games.

                      Pick: Marlins

Seattle Mariners at Minnesota Twins (-1 1/2) (-120)

The Twinkies are playing every game with a playoff swagger and have the silent assassin Scott Baker (7-3, 3.78) toeing the rubber today. The Twins rolled 9-3 last night, and with the White Sox losing, should be excited to see a spot-starter Ryan Roland-Smith taking the bump this afternoon in hopes of taking the lead in the Central. As for the Mariners, half the squad's on waivers and probably not too excited to be in Minneapolis.

                      Pick: Twins

Key Injuries - 3B Maicer Izturis (.269; thumb) is OUT for the season.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Indians: Fausto Carmona has started four games since returning from the DL but he hasn't returned to form as of yet. Carmona has allowed a mind-boggling 24 runs in just 19 innings of work since his return. He's allowed at least four runs in each of those starts. Carmona has faced the Angels once his career, allowing just one run over six innings in that start. Carmona's last five outings have all easily gone OVER the total.

Indians are 6-2 in their last 8 home games.
The OVER is 6-2 in Cleveland's last 8 home games.

Key Injuries - SS Jhonny Peralta (.278; hand) is day-to-day.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Seattle Mariners at Minnesota Twins [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Mariners: Ryan Rowland-Smith comes out of the bullpen to make his fourth start of the season for the Mariners today. In his most recent outing versus Tampa Bay, Rowland-Smith took a no-decision after allowing four runs in just 5.2 innings. However, in his two prior starts, he had only given up two runs over nine innings. This will be Rowland-Smith's first career start versus the Twins.

Mariners are 1-5 in their last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 5-0 in Seattle's last 5 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Twins (-210, O/U 9): Scott Baker has been solid for the Twins most of this season but he's struggled a bit during his last three starts, giving up 12 runs in 18.1 innings on the mound.

The OVER is 21-6-1 in the last 28 meetings.

Key Injuries - OF Michael Cuddyer (.252; foot) is OUT for the season.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Chicago White Sox at Oakland Athletics [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

White Sox (-140, O/U 8): John Danks has only lost once in his last 10 starts but it was his most recent outing against Boston.

White Sox are 6-28 in the last 34 meetings at Oakland.
White Sox are 2-7 in their last 9 road games.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

A's: Greg Smith hasn't experienced the thrill of victory since June 30 and Oakland has lost five consecutive games with him on the mound. Smith is 2-4 in nine home starts this year, although his ERA is a respectable 3.34. Smith was hit pretty hard his last time out against the White Sox back on July 5, allowing four runs over five innings. He also walked six batters in that game. Despite his poor record the UNDER has cashed an amazing 12 straight times when Smith takes the rubber.

A's are 5-23 in their last 28 games overall.
The UNDER is 26-11-2 in the last 39 meetings.

Key Injuries - OF Ryan Sweeney (.283; thumb) is on the 15-day DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3
