    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, August 13

With outfielder Adam Dunn now on the roster the Diamondbacks will be looking to pull away from the rival Dodgers in the NL West race. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

Dunn and the Diamondbacks will continue their series in Colorado against the Rockies on Wednesday night. Arizona countered the Dodgers' acquisition of Manny Ramirez by dealing for the slugging Reds outfielder on Monday afternoon, in exchange for minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and a pair of players to be named later. Dunn has had trouble with his batting average this year, but he's still able to blast home runs.

And Doug Davis (4-7, 4.75 ERA) will be looking to Dunn to provide him some offense on Wednesday night, as he takes the mound for Arizona. The lefthander has been terrible in each of his last two outings, giving up a combined 12 earned runs on 15 hits in just six innings of work. The Diamondbacks are 3-7 in Davis' last 10 trips to the mound.

Jeff Francis (3-8, 5.81 ERA) hasn't been any better, as the Rockies are 3-7 in his last 10 starts as well. The lefthander was knocked around in his return from the disabled list on August 7, giving up five earned runs on eight hits over 5 1-3 innings versus the light-hitting Nationals. Unless one or both of those starting pitchers show some progress on Wednesday night Dunn and the rest of the hitters could have a field day.

    Non-event of the day . . .

Dunn's old team remains mired in last place in the NL Central standings, and they'll take on their closest cellar competitor on Wednesday. Cincinnati will send Josh Fogg (2-4, 7.98 ERA) to the mound in that contest, and he'll be countered by Pittsburgh's Paul Maholm (7-7, 3.76 ERA). Fogg might not last much longer in the Reds' rotation, as the team is 0-3 in his last three outings (in which he allowed a healthy 16 runs).

    Also on the schedule . . .

John Maine (9-7, 4.13 ERA) is scheduled to return from the disabled list for the Mets on Wednesday when they play in Washington. Other National League games on the night's schedule include the Cubs at Atlanta, St. Louis at Florida, San Francisco at Houston, Milwaukee at San Diego, and Philadelphia at the Dodgers.

A couple of long last names will square off in American League action on Wednesday, with the Rays' Andy Sonnanstine (11-6, 4.40 ERA) taking on the Athletics' Justin Duchscherer (10-7, 2.51 ERA). Other Wednesday AL contests: the Yankees at Minnesota, Texas at Boston, Baltimore at Cleveland, Toronto at Detroit, Kansas City at the White Sox, and Seattle at the Angels.

Overseas, the Olympic men's basketball tournament continues on Wednesday, with Germany taking on Spain at 9:00pm ET. Other contests through the night include Australia vs. Iran, Angola vs. China, Lithuania vs. Russia, and Argentina vs. Croatia, with the United States tipping off against Greece at 8:00am ET on Thursday.

    News from the wire . . .

Both third baseman Evan Longoria and outfielder Carl Crawford are now on the disabled list for the Rays . . . the Cardinals might bring pitcher Adam Wainwright back as their closer next week . . . Chargers tight end Antonio Gates still has pain in his surgically-repaired foot and is questionable for Week 1 of the season . . . Ravens RB Willis McGahee is questionable for Week 1 as well with a knee injury.

    Peek at the future . . .

It'll be Ben Sheets (11-5, 2.95 ERA) vs. Jake Peavy (8-8, 2.68 ERA) when the Brewers and Padres meet on Thursday night . . . the Bills are a 1.5-point favorite to beat the Steelers when they meet at Toronto's Rogers Centre in preseason action on Thursday night . . . Vijay Singh is the 7/1 Vegas favorite to win the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship this weekend.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Red Sox scored ten runs in first inning, as David Ortiz hit a pair of homers, but they trailed in 8th inning, before rallying to win 19-17, in a game that set pitching back twenty years.

-- Put it this way: Youkilis struck out twice in the first inning, and still wound up with two homers and five RBI in the game.

-- If I owned the Rangers, I'd prohibit trading pitchers for any non-pitchers. They're exciting team, but exciting also-rans.

-- Abdre Ethier's single to left-center scored Russell Martin with winning run in ninth as Dodgers beat the Phillies, 4-3.

-- Going into Tuesday's games, Rays' bullpen had 3.42 ERA; the bullpen's ERA last year was an awful 6.16.

-- Nick Johnson leads the '08 Nationals in walks; he last was in a game on May 13. These Nationals swing the bat.

Wednesday's Den; Runnin' the bases in American League

        14) A's-- No speed, no power, gave away their best couple of starting pitchers. Scored three runs or less in 15 of Smith's last 18 starts. Not even sure where the new ballpark is going to be.

        13) Indians-- Bullpen is even worse than the Mets'; gave away Byrd to the Red Sox, even though he was dominant over last four starts-- why would you give away a productive pitcher?

        12) Mariners-- While A's have made multiple moves to make them a contender 2-3 years down road, Seattle kept its $100M payroll intact, except for dumping Sexson/Rhodes. Not good. Mariners aren't going to contend again for quite a while.

        11) Orioles-- If Baltimore was in the National League, they're a playoff contender, but they're not. Biggest question for them is whether they go after free agent 1B, Maryland native Teixeira.

        10) Royals-- Brad Ziegler of the A's has started career on a roll, tossing 38 consecutive scoreless innings; he got second save of season Tuesday. Previous record for consecutive scoreless innings at the start of a career was 27.

        9) Tigers-- Gary Sheffield bitched about being a DH, then hit couple of homers Tuesday. Why don't they just trade him to a contender? Detroit signed Freddie Garcia, good move for '09.

        8) Blue Jays-- Burnett, Halladay are as solid a twosome as any team in baseball has in its rotation, but McGowan's injury was a disaster and Wells has been hurt lot since signing contract.

        7) Rangers-- On a night where Texas scored 17 runs and lost, Edinson Volquez won for Cincinnati to move to 14-5, 2.86 this season. Repeat after me: Pitching is very important in baseball.

        6) Bronx-- Have a very strange roster, in that more than half its players earn $500,000 or less. They need pitching, yet traded a pitcher away (Karstens) who is 2-1, 1.71 in three Pirate starts.

        5) Twins-- Joe Nathan donated $500,000 to Stony Brook, where he played college baseball. Looks like the Seawolves will have an improved baseball facility in the near future. Nice gesture.

        4) Red Sox-- David Ortiz hit two HRs in first inning Tuesday, in a game Boston trailed in 8th inning, despite scoring ten runs in the first. Added Paul Byrd Tuesday, to bolster a shaky staff.

        3) White Sox-- Lost Contreras with Achilles injury, but have to have encouraged by Vazquez' strong outing Tuesday. Twins can't stand prosperity-- lost last five games they started in 1st.

        2) Rays-- If Tampa gets nosed out of playoffs by Boston and both Central contenders, they can thank their gutless execs in front office, who neglected to land hitter at the trade deadline. Now Crawford and Longoria are hurt, disaster is looming.

        1) Angels-- Good chance to manage pitch counts, ABs to keep everyone fresh for October. Have to avoid bad habits, but this is a team that does almost everything the right way.

Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox [ESPN | 7:05 PM ET]

Rangers: Luis Mendoza has been battered over his last four starts. During that stretch, Mendoza has allowed 21 runs in just 19.1 innings of work. He has one career start versus Boston where Mendoza possesses an ERA of 21.00 after giving up seven runs in just three innings on the mound. Mendoza has been terrible overall in 2008 but he's been particularly bad on the road, where he's 1-3 with an 8.46 ERA. The OVER is always a good bet when Mendoza pitches because he usually gets you halfway their on his own. The OVER is 4-0 in his last four starts.

The OVER is 7-2 in Texas' last 9 road games.
The OVER is 6-2-1 in Mendoza's last 9 starts overall.

Key Injuries - DH Milton Bradley (.321; illness) has returned.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-240, O/U 10.5): After allowing just four runs overall in three prior starts, Jon Lester was touched up for four runs alone in his last outing versus the White Sox. Still, Lester has been a machine over his last 10 appearances, allowing two runs or less an impressive seven times. The Red Sox are also 8-2 over that span. Lester is 6-1 with a strong 2.87 ERA at Fenway Park this season but in two career starts against the Rangers, his ERA is a below average 5.06. The OVER has cashed in two of Lester's last three starts.

Red Sox are 8-3 in their last 11 games on grass.
Red Sox are 32-9 in the last 41 meetings at Boston.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.260; wrist) has returned.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Mariners: Felix Hernandez is just 7-7 on the year but that has more to do with the Mariners inept offense than it does his pitching. For instance, Hernandez has allowed just 10 runs in his last four starts but is 0-1 with three no-decisions over that stretch. For all the success King Felix has enjoyed in his career, the Angels are one of the few teams that have given him problems. Hernandez is just 3-4 with a 4.79 ERA in nine starts versus Anaheim. The UNDER is 6-3-1 in Hernandez's last 10 starts.

Mariners are 11-28 in the last 39 meetings.
The OVER is 8-1 in Seattle's last 9 games as an underdog.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Angels (-150, O/U 7.5): Ervin Santana continues to make his case for Cy Young consideration with a 13-5 record and 3.45 ERA on the year. However, he's been a little shaky over his last four starts, giving up 13 runs in 27 innings of work, and that includes a shutout in there. Santana has done well in his career against Seattle, compiling a 5-2 record and holding Mariner hitters to a .232 average. In Santana's last five appearances, the UNDER has dominated, going 4-1.

Angels are 15-3 in their last 18 home games.
The OVER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Jeff Mathis (.212; eye) is OUT indefinitely.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Phillies: After struggling in his first two games with the Phillies, Joe Blanton has turned it on of late. In his last two starts, Blanton has allowed just five hits and one run over 14 innings. He also has 12 strikeouts in those two games. Blanton has started one game against the Dodgers back when he was a member of the Oakland A's, getting the win after pitching eight strong innings. Blanton's last two starts have easily gone UNDER, combining for a total of just five runs.

Phillies are 1-5 in the last 6 meetings.
The UNDER is 5-1-1 in Philadelphia's last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Pedro Feliz (.256 back) is on the 15-day DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-120, O/U 8): Brad Penny had lost five decisions in a row and seven of eight before finally getting in the win column his last time out against the Giants. Penny went just five innings but got the win after allowing only one run. Despite his recent struggles, Penny has an impressive career record versus the Phillies, going 8-4 with a strong 3.33 ERA in 19 starts. Pitching at home hasn't been much of an advantage for Penny this season where he possesses an ERA of 5.07. Surprisingly, the UNDER is 4-2 in his last six starts.

Dodgers are 10-3 in their last 12 home games.
The OVER is 8-2-2 in the last 12 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Nomar Garciaparra (.279; knee) has returned.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                        MLB

                        Streaking Starting Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Wednesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                        Streaking

Jorge Campillo, Atlanta Braves (7-4, 2.83 ERA)

Campillo is doing well in his first season as a full-time big league starter and he seems to be getting more comfortable as the season wears on.

He is 4-0 in his last six starts, with two no decisions and he was either an underdog or a slight favorite in all four of those victories. Before allowing five earned runs in his last outing against Arizona, Campillo went five straight games where he allowed two earned runs or fewer.

The Braves are currently coming off a 3-1 series win during a four-game set against the D-backs and should be able to give Campillo a decent shot at the victory against the Cubs on Wednesday.

CC Sabathia, Milwaukee Brewers (6-0, 1.58 ERA)

Sabathia continues to roll with the Brew Crew and his new club has only one loss in his seven starts, although the lefty wasn't tagged with the defeat.

Sabathia bettors will be happy to know that he pitches against the Padres on Wednesday in San Diego. That's good news because the Padres are hitting a pitiful .217 against southpaws at home this season.

                        Slumping

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins (8-8, 4.07 ERA)

Slowey has quietly become a moneymaking pitcher for the Twins recently with seven wins for Minnesota in his last 10 starts.

What makes this right-hander a slumping pitcher for Wednesday, however, is the time of the game ? 1:10 p.m. ET. Slowey doesn't enjoy pitching during the daytime and his numbers slide to 1-4 with a 6.98 ERA when the sun is shining. Compare that to a 7-4 record with a 2.97 ERA under the lights.

Slowey most recently faced the Yankees on July 22 when he was slapped for four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in an 8-2 loss.

                          SCOREBOARD

                          Wednesday, Aug. 13

Seattle at Los Angeles Angels (10:05 p.m. EDT). Felix Hernandez (7-7, 2.94 ERA) tries to slow down an Angels offense that has been scoring at will recently. Los Angeles counters with Ervin Santana (13-5, 3.45), who will try to improve to 3-0 against the Mariners this season.

                          STARS

                          Tuesday

                          - David Ortiz, Red Sox, hit two three-run homers in the first inning and Boston - despite blowing a 10-0 lead - beat Texas 19-17 in a wild game.

                          - Javier Vazquez, White Sox, pitched eight shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out 10 in Chicago's 9-0 win over Kansas City.

                          - Kevin Youkilis, Red Sox, overcame striking out twice in the first inning, hitting two homers including a key three-run shot in the eighth inning to help Boston beat Texas 19-17.

                          - Adam Lind, Blue Jays, went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs to help Toronto beat Detroit 6-4.

                          - Marlon Byrd, Rangers, went 5-for-6 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in a losing effort as Texas fell 19-17 to Boston.

                          - Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox, had five hits and scored five runs in Boston's 19-17 victory over Texas.

                          HAPPY PAPI

David Ortiz hit two three-run homers in the first inning to help the Red Sox score 10 runs in the frame against the Texas Rangers. Ortiz hit his 15th and 16th homers off Scott Feldman, to become the first player to hit two home runs in the first inning since Aaron Boone of the Cincinnati Reds against the San Diego Padres on Aug. 9, 2002, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Bret Boone and Mike Cameron were the last American Leaguers to do it, and they did it in the same game, according to Elias. On May 2, 2002, the pair hit back-to-back homers twice in the first inning for the Seattle Mariners against the Chicago White Sox.

                          NO LEAD IS SAFE

The Red Sox took a 10-0 lead after one inning, and gave it away. Fortunately, they rallied to beat the feisty Rangers 19-17 on Kevin Youkilis' two-run homer, his second of the game. The 19 runs were the most scored by the Red Sox this season and they ruined a Rangers comeback that matched the greatest ever against Boston. The Red Sox also squandered a 10-run lead on June 4, 1989, against Toronto when they lost 13-11 in 12 innings after they led 10-0 through six. The combined 36 runs tied in AL record set on June 29, 1950, when the Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics 22-14. The teams totaled 37 hits.

                          NO LEE, NO PROBLEM

The Astros are playing some of their best baseball of the season, even though slugger Carlos Lee is out. Lance Berkman hit a grand slam in an eight-run seventh inning and the Astros beat the Giants 12-4 for their sixth straight win. Berkman hit his 24th homer this season and his fourth career regular-season grand slam. Berkman has homered in two of his last three games after going 33 games without one.

                          EASY TARGET

White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin sat out against the Royals after he was struck on the left forearm by a pitch from Josh Beckett on Monday night, the fifth straight game in which he was hit by a pitch. So it was no surprise that he felt soreness and had trouble gripping a bat after taking batting practice before the game against Kansas City. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Quentin wasn't in pain and expected him to play in Wednesday's game. Quentin became the first player since 1920 with that long of a streak, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He has been hit 19 times overall - most in the majors.

                          DL'D

The Dodgers placed center fielder Andruw Jones on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 10. Jones, laboring through the worst season of his 13-year career, has soreness in his left knee. The five-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner is batting .161 in 74 games with three home runs and 14 RBIs in the first year of a $36.2 million, two-year contract. He underwent surgery May 27 to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

                          AILING

All-Star catcher Joe Mauer sat out against the Yankees with a stiff neck. Mauer, fifth in the AL in batting (.316) and third in on-base percentage (.409) coming into the game, said he has had stiffness for the last three days, but didn't think it would become an ongoing issue. He said he expected to be back Wednesday. ... Giants ace Tim Lincecum left in the fifth inning against Houston after he was struck in the right knee by a line drive. Lincecum allowed only one hit and struck out seven through 4 1-3 innings. He left after Brad Ausmus drove a 3-1 pitch straight back to the mound. Lincecum tried to dodge it, but the ball hit him on the side of his knee. ... Detroit 3B Carlos Guillen left the game after seven innings because of lower left back tightness. ... Phillies CF Shane Victorino left after six innings because of lower back stiffness.

                          REHABBING

Yankees RHP Phil Hughes made a rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He allowed two runs and three hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 5 1-3 innings against Pawtucket. ... RHP Carl Pavano's rehab start for Double-A Trenton on Tuesday didn't go as well. He gave up seven hits, including two homers, and five runs in 4 1-3 innings. He also hit two batters with pitches.

                          SAVING ONE FOR JOHAN

The beleaguered Mets bullpen finally saved one for Johan Santana, preserving a 4-3 victory over the Nationals. The Mets relief corps has struggled badly without injured closer Billy Wagner. But with a 4-3 lead, Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano each worked a scoreless inning to lock down Santana's elusive 10th win. Feliciano, normally a left-handed specialist, struck out two in a perfect ninth for his third major league save. The other two came last year. Six times this season New York's bullpen has cost Santana a potential win - with five of the collapses coming in the ninth inning. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner left with a 3-1 lead in his previous outing last Thursday, only to have San Diego tie it in the ninth.

                          TRADED

The Red Sox acquired pitcher Paul Byrd from Cleveland, hoping to boost a rotation hurt by an injury to Tim Wakefield and the struggles of Clay Buchholz. The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Indians. The 37-year-old Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this season. But he has won all four of his starts since the All-Star break with a 1.24 ERA.

                          STREAKING

Prince Fielder hit a three-run homer and Jeff Suppan pitched eight strong innings to lead the Brewers to their seventh straight victory, 5-2 over the Padres. ... Asdrubal Cabrera hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning to help the Indians beat the Orioles for their fifth straight win. The slick-fielding Cabrera provided a boost last August when he was called up, hit .283 and solidified the defense to help Cleveland to the AL Central title. This season, Cabrera had a .184 average when he was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on June 9. He was recalled on July 18, and is batting .353 (18-for-51) in his last 15 games.

                          STAT

When Delmon Young homered off Mariano Rivera in the eighth inning, it was the first time the Yankees' closer had allowed a home run to a Twins player in his career. He had pitched 53 regular season innings against Minnesota without along a homer coming into the game.

                          SPEAKING

"At some point, you're thinking about going for a field goal.'' - Red Sox manager Terry Francona after watching his team take a 10-0 lead, fall behind 16-14, and finally rally to beat the Rangers 19-17.

                          SEASONS

                          Aug. 13

1906 - Jack Taylor of the Chicago Cubs was chased by Brooklyn in the third inning, ending a streak of 187 complete games and 15 relief games that Taylor had finished without relief help.

1910 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates played to an 8-8 tie. Each team had 38 at-bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, two errors, five strikeouts, three walks, one hit batsman and one passed ball.

1931 - Tony Cuccinello of the Cincinnati Reds had six hits in six at-bats in the first game of a doubleheader at Boston. Cuccinello had a triple, two doubles and three singles to knock in five runs as the Reds won 17-3.

1948 - Satchel Paige, 42, pitched his first major league complete game against the Chicago White Sox. Paige gave up five hits en route to 5-0 Cleveland victory.

1969 - Jim Palmer of the Orioles, plagued by arm trouble the year before, threw an 8-0 no-hitter against the Oakland A's in Baltimore.

1978 - The Baltimore Orioles benefited from the rain-out rule. The Orioles were leading New York 3-0 after six innings but the Yankees scored five runs in the top half of the seventh. Heavy rains ended the game in the bottom half of the inning and the score was reverted to the end of the last completed frame giving the Orioles the triumph. This rule was changed in 1980.

1979 - St. Louis' Lou Brock reached the 3,000-hit plateau with an infield hit off Chicago Cubs pitcher Dennis Lamp. St. Louis won 3-2.

2004 - J.T. Snow hit three home runs, had four RBIs, and scored five runs to power the San Francisco Giants to a 16-6 rout of Philadelphia.

2004 - Kansas City rookies Abraham Nunez and John Buck both hit grand slams to lead the Royals past the Oakland Athletics 10-3. It was the first time in club history the Royals hit two grand slams in one game - also tying a major league record. Buck and Nunez were the first rookie teammates to hit grand slams in the same game since the rookie rule went into effect in 1957.

2005 - New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera blew his first save since April 6 in a 7-5 win over Texas. Rivera had converted a career-best 31 consecutive saves before allowing Kevin Mench's two-run, game-tying single in the ninth.

2006 - Travis Hafner tied Don Mattingly's single-season grand slam record with his sixth of the year as Cleveland routed Kansas City 13-0.

Today's birthdays: Boone Logan 24; Corey Patterson 29; Will Ohman 31; Jarrod Washburn 34.

Hot Lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              San Francisco at Houston (-155, 9 1/2)

Nobody thought it would be easy for the 'Stros to continue their hot streak without Carlos Lee, who could be out for the rest of the season after breaking a finger on the weekend, but they've gone 3-0 and scored 28 runs without the All-Star slugger. However, those numbers might be a little deceiving. They got a little lucky when Giants' ace Tim Lincecum was forced out of last night's game with an injury after allowing just one hit in 4 1/3 innings, otherwise that 12-4 final score might have looked very different. Don't be fooled by the recent offensive outburst; the Houston bats will cool off soon enough.

And it could happen as soon as tonight against Barry Zito. The curveballer doesn't have the same stuff he used to, but he's been a much better pitcher on the road. Away from the Bay Area, Zito has a 3.88 ERA and he's helped the Giants to wins in five of his last six road starts.

                              Tampa Bay at Oakland (-134, 7 1/2)

Oakland hasn't scored more than four runs in a game since July 27 and their chances of breaking that trend against Andy Sonnanstine today aren't too good. A long road trip could be blamed for some of their offensive woes, but McAfee Coliseum hasn't exactly been a house of hits either. The over/under record in the A's home park is 24-34-4 this year.

And with their two best hitters out of the lineup, the Rays can't be counted on to exploit a slumping Justin Duchscherer. Last night the formerly fearsome Tampa offense produced just two runs, which shouldn't surprise anyone since the Rays' team batting average is a full 11 points lower on the road.
