Speedo tells Phelps if he wins 8 gold medals they'll write him a check for $1 Mil.... as most of you prob already know.. My question is: does anyone know how much these olympians get paid before these types of bonuses? I mean what puts the bread on their tables? Is it strictly sponsors?????

The USOC pays out an amount for each medal. I think each gold is $20K or $25K.

The big name Olympians all have significant sponsors, but if you look at the stories of some of the obscure athletes, they have normal jobs that they work but give them schedules to train. I do know Home Depot is a big supporter of hiring Olympians and let them keep some sort of flexible schedule to train properly.

The USOC does pay the athletes for winning medals.
