Broken wrist lands Rays HR leader Longoria on DL

    ESPN.com news services

The Tampa Bay Rays have been riding high, but now they'll get a glimpse of real adversity.

Just a day after putting outfielder Carl Crawford on the disabled list, the team announced on Monday that third baseman Evan Longoria will be joining him with a fractured wrist.

The rookie was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 8 after getting hit by a pitch in last Thursday's game against the Mariners. Intial X-rays were negative. The 22-year-old has missed the past three games.

"By the time we start the Oakland series I think I'll be ready to go," Longoria told reporters prior to Saturday night's game, according to MLB.com. "I would like to think I could play [on Sunday]. But if it's still lingering a little bit, I'm not going to push it."

The new diagnosis followed shortly thereafter. It was not initially clear how much time Longoria would miss, but the injury can't help the first-place Rays. He leads the team in home runs (22) and RBIs (71).

Longoria leads American League third basemen with a .971 fielding percentage. Before his injury, he had not missed a game after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Durham on April 12.

In July, Longoria became the youngest Rays position player ever to make the All-Star team. He also was the first Rays rookie to participate in the Home Run Derby.

According to MLB.com, Crawford was scheduled to meet with Dr. Doug Carlan on Monday to discuss his hand injury, which was diagnosed as a displaced tendon in his middle finger.

The Rays recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Durham to take Longoria's place.

Ruggiano will begin his fourth stint with the Rays this season. In 15 games, he has batted .290 with one home run and two RBIs while playing all three outfield positions.

As long as Lowell and Bucholz play for the Red Sox they will not win the division nor make the playoffs so this doesnt matter much..

The Rays not making a trade at the deadline could come back to haunt them.

I think Giles was going there for 1 thing, to replace Crawford. Boston blocked it by claiming him but i am 99% sure, that is what was going on. Great move by the Red Sox (IMO).

If all they care about is winning there's no reason it shouldn't be.
