    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, August 11

The Packers will play at Lambeau Field against the Bengals on Monday night, with a newly-anointed starting QB leading the charge. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup …

    Event of the day . . .

The Aaron Rodgers era begins in earnest on Monday night (8:00pm ET) when the Packers kick off their exhibition schedule by hosting the Bengals. And Green Bay won't even have the safety net of Brett Favre around, as the team's longtime quarterback is now plying his trade on the east coast in the green-and-white jersey of the Jets.

So even though Monday's game means nothing in the standings Rodgers' every throw will be heavily scrutinized by the Green Bay faithful. During his three seasons with the team Rodgers has thrown just 59 pass attempts, with one touchdown, one interception, and a quarterback rating of 73.3. Favre's quarterback rating last year was 95.7.

As for the Bengals, they're coming off a disappointing 7-9 campaign that saw them finish behind both the Steelers and the Browns in the AFC North and miss the playoffs. Cincinnati also had to deal with Chad Johnson's griping all through the offseason (although he's been fairly quiet lately). The Bengals are 3-point 'dogs Monday night.

    Non-event of the day . . .

If the Indians are going to avoid the indignity of finishing behind even the Royals in the AL Central standings they're going to have to start knocking off teams like their Monday opponent - the middling Orioles. The Tribe will send Fausto Carmona (5-4, 4.46 ERA) to the mound to duel Baltimore starter Dennis Sarfate (4-2, 4.58 ERA).

    Also on the schedule . . .

There are three other AL games on tap on Monday: Toronto at Detroit, the Yankees at Minnesota, and Boston at the White Sox. Josh Beckett (10-8, 4.08 ERA) will start for the visiting Red Sox in that last one, while John Danks (9-4, 3.21 ERA) goes for Chicago.

It's a little busier in the NL, where there are five games on the Monday schedule: Pittsburgh at the Mets, Washington at Milwaukee, St. Louis at Florida, San Francisco at Houston, and Philadelphia at the Dodgers. New York's Pedro Martinez (3-3, 5.79 ERA) is the most notable pitcher on that docket; he'll face Zach Duke (4-10, 5.13 ERA).

    News from the wire . . .

Favre is scheduled to start for the Jets in their preseason game against the Redskins on the weekend . . . the Dolphins signed displaced QB Chad Pennington to a two-year contract . . . there is still no clear leader in the Niners' three-way QB battle between Alex Smith, J.T. O'Sullivan, and Shaun Hill . . . Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer broke his foot while rehabbing a finger injury and could be done for the season.

    Peek at the future . . .

Week 2 of the NFL's preseason schedule kicks off on Thursday with Pittsburgh at Buffalo and Carolina at Philadelphia . . . young guns Cole Hamels (9-8, 3.35 ERA) and Clayton Kershaw (2-3, 3.71 ERA) will meet in Tuesday's Phillies/Dodgers matchup . . . the PGA Tour ends its pre-playoff schedule with the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina this week.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- China made 5 of first 7 shots behind arc, played their butts off, and still lost 101-70 to US Sunday. They'll have hard time getting up for their next game- they gave a great effort here.

-- At one point, US was shooting 84% inside arc (21-25) and 1-18 outside arc-- if they shoot 3's well, the gold is theirs, but that is a big if. Teams will pack in zones against them.

-- Jason Kidd didn't take a shot; it will get to point where the teams just won't guard him in halfcourt; he's going to have to step up and make a big shot at some point.

-- Next game is tomorrow against Angola; good thing we've got Jim Boeheim on the bench-- his tactical wizardry should get the US through that game.

-- Unfortunately for me, the next three weekday games are at 8am, bad news for people with jobs. The game against Spain (Saturday, 10:15 am) should be the toughest in pool play.

-- I am assuming the NBA powers-that-be are all there; can we agree that this style of basketball is lot more fun to watch than the NBA style? Team play is always fun to watch.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

        13) Rays won franchise-record 71st game Sunday, crushing a pathetic Seattle team, despite four Tampa starters being out of the game. Carl Crawford (finger) goes on DL, just as long-lost Rocco Baldelli (last played 435 days ago) returned.

        12) Baldelli was 1-4 with an RBI and diving catch in RF; he got taken out in sixth inning, but all in all, considering that at one point, they thought he might be dying, it had to be good day for Baldelli, who is a free agent after the season.

        11) Best part so far about Beijing Olympics (other than studio host Alex Flanagan) is fact that China is 12 hours behind us, so the latenight events here are all in mid-afternoon there. Did you know they play beach volleyball outside, even if it rains?

        10) Whoops, just stumbled upon another highlight; one of our all-time favorites, perky Heather Cox has returned to her roots and is sideline reporter for beach volleyball. Good deal.

        9) Let me see, Ben Curtis wore Lions' gear at the PGA, while the tournament was won by Padraig Harrington, whose cousin is Joey Harrington, a first-round pick of the Lions who wound up as one of the most hated players in franchise history. Even in August, things are crummy for Lion fans.

        8) Harrington is first European to win PGA since 1930, also the first European to win consecutive majors since '31. We're not going to refer to Harrington as the Houston Rockets of golf-- Rockets won two NBA titles while Michael Jordan was retired, much as Eldrick Woods has been missing the last six weeks.

        7) Four walk-offs Sunday, including Gabe Kapler of Milwaukee going yard in 13th to give Brewers an important win. Deserves to be mentioned again: Kapler managed in A ball last season, and is now an important contributor on a playoff contender.

        6) Colorado scored seven runs in one inning and still lost 16-7, as recently-signed Livan Hernandez was pounded (nine runs in 2.2 IP). Batters are hitting over .340 against him this year.

        5) Giants are going nowhere this year; not sure why Bochy is letting 23-year old Matt Cain throw 126 pitches in a game, even if it is against the hated Dodgers. Giants could be good in few years, if they keep their starting rotation intact.

        4) Cliff Lee's amazing season continued, as he blanked Toronto for eight innings at Rogers Centre. What a season he's having; last-place Indians are 18-6 when he starts, 34-58 otherwise.

        3) Marlins are now 6-0 in Josh Johnson starts; they went 3-3 in big week, on road at both Philly and New York.

        2) The net in men's volleyball is roughly 8 feet tall; in women's, it is roughly 7 feet, 4 inches. Olympics uses the metric system, but it is way too late for me to be converting that stuff.

        1) When was last time, if ever, a team went into an NFL season without a QB who has ever started an NFL game? Green Bay is on ESPN Monday night, in what should be on odd game.

I'm not a big fan of investing in summer games, especially in the first week of preseason. But people have asked for some insight so here goes, as little as it is............

-- Aaron Rodgers will be under intense scrutiny as he starts for first time at Lambeau Field; he shouldn't play much, leaving two rookies, highly-regarded Brohm (played for Petrino at Louisville) and LSU's Flynn to mop up. Cincinnati has shaky backup QBs in former Ram Fitzpatrick, Rowe (UNevada), and younger brother Jordan Palmer, who wasn't very good at end of his UTEP career.

                    Tips and Trends
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]

Cardinals: Joel Pineiro finally got a win his last time out against the Dodgers but it was far from an impressive effort. Pineiro gave up four runs over seven innings, making it the sixth time in 10 outings that he allowed at least four runs. Pineiro's short win streak may not last long. He's been roughed up on the road this year, going 2-4 with an ERA of 5.75. The OVER is 4-1 in Pineiro's last five starts.

Cardinals are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
The OVER is 10-1-1 in St. Louis' last 12 road games.

Key Injuries - OF Rick Ankiel (.282; abdomen) is expected to return.
OF Chris Duncan (.248; neck) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Marlins (-125, O/U 9.5): Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for the third time this season after getting hit pretty hard his last time out against the Phillies. In just five innings of work, Sanchez allowed five hits and four runs. Sanchez's other start this year was at home against Colorado, where he faired better, giving up just two runs over 5.2 innings. Walks have been a concern for Sanchez. He's given out five free passes in 10.2 innings pitched this season.

Marlins are 10-1 in Sanchez's last 11 home starts.
The OVER is 12-3-2 in Florida's last 17 Monday games.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox [NESN | 8:11 PM ET]

Red Sox (-135, O/U 9): Josh Beckett gets the call for the Red Sox tonight after snapping a personal three-game slide his last time out versus Kansas City. Before beating the Royals, Beckett had allowed 14 runs in his previous 20.1 innings on the mound. Beckett is 3-0 in four career starts against the White Sox, although his ERA is an average 4.64 in those outings. The OVER is 4-2 in Beckett's last six starts.

Red Sox are 19-8 in Beckett's last 27 road games.
The OVER is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - 1B Kevin Youkilis (.317; hand) has returned.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox: John Danks hasn't lost a decision in 10 straight starts but three of his last four outings have been shaky. Before shutting down Detroit in his most recent start, Danks had allowed 15 runs in his previous 16 innings of work. Danks has been tough at home this season but he's struggled badly against the Red Sox, going 0-2 with a lofty 8.68 ERA. Not surprisingly, four of Dank's last five starts have gone OVER the total.

White Sox are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings.
The OVER is 17-6-1 in Chicago's last 24 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers [ESPN2 | 10:10 PM ET]

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick has been fantastic for the Phillies over his last three starts, allowing just three runs in 18.2 innings pitched. Kendrick is 6-2 on the road this year but his ERA is 4.79, compared to 3.90 at home. Kendrick has been strong over his last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less seven times. You can't go wrong betting the OVER with Kendrick on the hill. It's cashed seven times in his last 10 appearances.

Phillies are 11-4 in their last 15 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 8-3 in Philadelphia's last 11 Monday games.

Key Injuries - 3B Pedro Feliz (.256 back) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-140, O/U 8): Derek Lowe was hammered his last time out against St Louis, allowing an unreal 13 hits and 8 runs in just 3.1 innings. Luckily for Lowe, he returns home tonight where he's been much more effective this season. Lowe's home ERA is a strong 2.72 but it's more than three runs higher on the road. Lowe's last five starts at Dodger Stadium have gone UNDER the total.

Dodgers are 8-3 in their last 11 home games.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Nomar Garciaparra (.279; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Monday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                      Streaking

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (10-5, 4.37)

In just his second MLB season, Kendrick is leading the Phillies in wins (10). He is 2-1 in his last three starts with a solid 1.45 ERA.

Kendrick has just three setbacks in his last 10 overall and is 4-1 in his last five road outings. In his last road start, a win over the Washington Nationals, he surrendered just two earned runs and seven hits in 6.2 IP.

The Phillies are 5-1 in their last six road games and are 5-1 in their last six against the NL West.

                      Slumping

Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants (8-8, 4.64)

Sanchez is winless in his last six starts and has conceded 23 earned runs and 32 hits in his last 11.2 IP. He is 0-3 in his last three with a lofty 10.03 ERA.

Sanchez is 6-4 with a 5.07 ERA on the road and is 0-1 and has a 27.00 career-ERA against the Houston Astros. In one relief appearance at Minute Maid Park, he surrendered one ER and one hit in just 0.1 IP.

The Giants are 1-5 in their last six against the NL Central and are are 2-7 in their last nine road games against a team with a winning home record.

Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians (5-4, 4.46)

Carmona hasn’t impressed many Tribe fans since coming off the DL. In his last three, he is 1-2 with a shaky 11.25 ERA and 1.89 WHIP.

Carmona is 0-3 in his last three at home, including a loss to the Minnesota Twins in which he surrendered nine earned runs in just 2.1 IP. He is also 2-2 and has a 3.52 career- ERA against the Baltimore Orioles.

                        SCOREBOARD

                        Monday, Aug. 11

Boston at Chicago (7:05 p.m. EDT). Josh Beckett (10-8, 4.08 ERA) tries to build on his solid outing in his last start, when he allowed two runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings against Kansas City for his first win since July 9. He'll face John Danks (9-4, 3.21), who has won six straight decisions.

                        STARS

                        Sunday

                        - Ian Kinsler, Rangers, went 5-for-6 with his 15th home run, driving in three runs in a 15-7 rout of Baltimore.

                        - Brian Giles, Padres, went 4-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs to help San Diego beat Colorado 16-7.

                        - Willy Aybar, Rays, hit two home runs and drove in four runs in his first multihomer game to help Tampa Bay down Seattle 11-3.

                        - Cliff Lee, Indians, pitched eight scoreless innings to win his AL-leading 16th game in a 4-0 victory over Toronto.

                        - Randy Winn, Giants, had three hits and three RBIs and sparked a ninth-inning rally with a leadoff single to help San Francisco beat Los Angeles 5-4.

                        RAY OF HOPE

What better way for Tampa Bay to celebrate the return of outfielder Rocco Baldelli than to do it on the day the long-suffering franchise set a record with its 71st victory. Baldelli, who missed most of the 2005 and 2006 seasons, played his first game since May 15, 2007, going 1-for-4 in an 11-3 win over Seattle. He slowly worked his way back after earlier this season getting diagnosed with mitochondrial disorder, a condition that slows muscle recovery and causes extreme fatigue. The AL East-leading Rays improved to 71-46, topping their previous highest win total set in 2004 when they finished 70-92.

                        BORN WINNERS

Indians left-hander Cliff Lee wasn't tied for the major league lead in wins for long. He won his AL-best 16th a few hours before Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Webb won his 17th, tops in the NL. Lee (16-2) threw eight shutout innings in a 4-0 win over the Blue Jays, lowering his ERA to a majors-best 2.45. Webb (17-4) wasn't quite as sharp, allowing six hits and a run in six innings, but he had a two-run double in a 6-1 win over the Braves.

                        BREAKING OUT

Lance Berkman of the Astros and Chase Utley of the Phillies ended unusually long home run droughts. Berkman hit his first homer in 113 at-bats, dating to June 30, in Houston's 13-4 win over Cincinnati. It was his 23rd of the season. Utley snapped an 0-for-12 slump with his first home run since July 7 - and 29th of the season - but he's still looking for his first multihit game since July 30. Hitless streaks of 24 and 17 at-bats have helped dropped his average to .287 after he hit .362 with 13 homers in the first 33 games.

                        OFFENSIVE SURGES

The Texas Rangers emphatically ended an uncharacteristic hitting drought in a 15-7 rout of the Orioles. Held to one run over their previous three games, the Rangers matched their season high with 20 hits. Ian Kinsler had five, topping his total in his last seven starts and added three RBIs. Josh Hamilton hit his 28th homer, a three-run drive that snapped a 3-for-22 skid. Marlon Byrd went 4-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs, one of six Texas starters with at least two hits. ... The San Diego Padres hit four home runs in a 16-7 win over Colorado. Brian Giles had four hits, including a homer, and Jody Gerut, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Luke Carlin also went deep for San Diego, which had 20 hits and set a season-high in runs.

                        STREAKING

Lastings Milledge's RBI single in the sixth extended his hitting streak to 11 games and ended Washington's scoreless innings streak at 27. He added his 11th homer of the year in the eighth. ... Cincinnati's Jay Bruce went 0-for-4 to snap his hitting streak at 13 games. ... Baltimore's Aubrey Huff went 1-for-5 with a homer run to extend the longest current hitting streak in the majors to 18 games. ... Boston's Clay Buchholz lost his sixth straight decision, the longest current streak in the American League.

                        SWEPT

Alex Rodgriguez said the Yankees have to treat every game like the playoffs after the Angels beat the Yankees 4-3. Los Angeles moved to 31 games over .500, and New York is now 8 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay and fading fast in the A.L. East race after closer Mariano Rivera again faltered in a non-save situation. It was the Angels' first home sweep of a three-game series over the Yankees since 1995.

                        FOOLING NO ONE

Welcome back to the National League, Livan Hernandez. The San Diego Padres roughed up Hernandez in his first start for the Rockies after being claimed of waivers from Minnesota. He gave up four runs in the first inning and was yanked after giving up two home runs in the third. Hernandez allowed nine runs and seven hits with four walks in 2 2-3 innings of a 16-7 loss to the Padres.

                        INJURED

A couple of playoff contenders suffered setbacks Sunday thanks to injuries. The Rays set a franchise record with their 71st win, but could be slowed in the coming weeks now that Carl Crawford is the 15-day disabled list with an injured tendon in the middle finger. Arizona second baseman Orlando Hudson is out for the season after surgery late Saturday night to repair a dislocated bone in his left wrist.

                        NOT AGAIN!

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter was forced to leave the game against the Chicago Cubs in the sixth inning with a strained right triceps. After Carpenter delivered a second pitch to Jim Edmonds with one out in the inning, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and a team trainer went to the mound. After a brief conversation, Carpenter was removed and Ron Villone came on to pitch, getting as much time as he needed to warm up. Carpenter was making just his third start since elbow ligament replacement surgery in July 2007.

                        WALK-OFF WINS

The Giants are out of the playoff race but can take consolation in the fact they dealt a blow to the rival Dodgers' hopes of overtaking Arizona. San Francisco beat Los Angeles 4-3 in 10 innings Sunday for a series sweep after knocking the Dodgers off 3-2 in 10 on Saturday. The Dodgers are now one game under .500 and 1 1/2 games behind the Diamondbacks.

                        SPEAKING

"Bonds is not a fit for us. If he would come, I would go. I wouldn't want to deal with it.'' - Houston manager Cecil Cooper, responding to Internet reports that the Astros are interested in signing career home run leader Barry Bonds.

Hot Lines: Monday's best MLB bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Baltimore at Cleveland (-145, 9 1/2)

Fausto Carmona's only been in the league for a few years, but he has already had a rollercoaster ride of a career.

He struggled to a 1-10 mark with a 5.42 ERA in his first full seasons two years ago, then got everything together to win 19 games last season. This year he's been up and down, starting slow, then rebounding before a strained left hip put him on the shelf for a while. Now he's having a tough time getting back on track.

He allowed nine earned runs over just 2 1/3 innings in his return to Cleveland's lineup late last month and is still struggling with his control leading up to today's start. He walked five batters in four innings in a loss to Tampa last week.

Canadian Dennis Sarfate, who joined the starting rotation from the bullpen late last month, isn't having much better luck. He has a 10.29 ERA over his first two MLB starts.

                            Pick: Over

New York Yankees at Minnesota (-130, 9 1/2)

As hard as it is to get behind the Yanks with volatile Sidney Ponson on the hill, especially when they have lost four of six, the value is tempting.

After being swept by the Angels over the weekend, New York needs a good showing against the Twins, a team it may end up battling for the AL Wild Card if the Rays keep rolling.

In a move that seems to reflect that urgency, the Yanks sent youngster Ian Kennedy to the minors instead of allowing him to continue to develop in the bigs. They need wins now and will bank on experience from here on out.

                            Pick: Yankees
