    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, August 10

Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon are expected to lead the way when NASCAR hits Watkins Glen International on Sunday afternoon. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup …

    Event of the day . . .

Stewart and Gordon each have four career Cup wins at the road course at Watkins Glen, the site of this week's Sprint Cup Series event, the Centurion Boats at The Glen. Stewart took the checkered flag last year, as well as in 2005, 2004, and 2002. Gordon visited victory lane at Watkins Glen in each of 2001, 1999, 1998, and 1997.

It should come as no surprise, then, that those two drivers are the Vegas favorites to pick up the win this weekend. Gordon leads the odds list at 5/1, with Stewart just behind him at 7/1. Kyle Busch, who still has a sizeable lead in the points race, and Carl Edwards, who won at Pocono last weekend, are tied back at 8/1 odds.

Road-course specialist Boris Said is then pegged at 10/1 odds, with Jimmie Johnson and Robby Gordon both at 12/1, and Juan Pablo Montoya and Denny Hamlin sitting at 15/1. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, and Ron Fellows (another road-course ringer) are all at 18/1 odds. Harvick got the win at Watkins Glen back in 2006.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The Chinese men's basketball team has one of the best players in the Olympic tournament in Yao Ming, but the oddsmakers still expect them to get blown out by the powerful American team in their opener on Sunday morning (10:15am ET tipoff). The United States has been pegged as a huge 33-point favorite in the expected laugher, while the game's total is on the high side at 183 points.

    Also on the schedule . . .

Cliff Lee (15-2, 2.58 ERA) continues his Cy Young campaign on Sunday afternoon as the Indians play against the Blue Jays and starter Scott Richmond (0-1, 4.91 ERA). Elsewhere around the American League on Sunday it's Oakland at Detroit, Texas at Baltimore, Boston at the White Sox, Minnesota at Kansas City, the Yankees at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at Seattle.

A leading NL Cy Young contender, Arizona's Brandon Webb (16-4, 2.93), also takes the mound on Sunday, as the D-Backs host the Braves and starter Mike Hampton (1-0, 6.75 ERA). Other NL games on Sunday: Florida at the Mets, Houston at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, Washington at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, the Dodgers at San Francisco, and St. Louis at the Cubs (in the primetime game).

    News from the wire . . .

American Lindsay Davenport withdrew from the women's singles tennis tournament at the Olympics because of a knee injury . . . Padres outfielder Brian Giles nixed a trade to the Red Sox . . . Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells (strained hamstring) could return from the disabled list as soon as Monday . . . Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has finally come to terms with the team on a restructured contract.

    Peek at the future . . .

Aaron Rodgers will start to crawl out of Brett Favre's shadow on Monday night when the Packers open their preseason schedule at home against the Bengals . . . it'll be Josh Beckett (10-8, 4.08 ERA) vs. John Danks (9-4, 3.21 ERA) in the BoSox/ChiSox series finale on Monday night . . . Team USA plays their second game of the men's basketball tournament against Angola at 8:00am ET on Tuesday morning.

      Six-pack for Sunday

The Sunday six-pack is all about the first-place Rays........

-- Huge win for Rays Saturday, as they tied franchise mark with their 70th win, nipping Seattle 7-6 in 11 innings, in game they trailed 5-1 in sixth inning. Game took 4:26 to play.

-- Matt Garza was awful in first two innings, but shut Seattle out over his last 3.2 IP, and kept Rays in game. He left with Tampa leading 7-5, after a six-run top of sixth inning.

-- Both teams had bases loaded, one out in 10th innng, but neither side scored. Winning scored on basic execution: Ben Zobrist walked, stole second, went to third on grounder to right side, and scored on Navarro's sac fly. Basic baseball.

-- Rays are currently without left side of their infield; Bartlett can't throw (finger), Longoria (wrist) missed last two games.

-- Anyone who doesn't vote for Joe Maddon for Manager of the Year should lose their voting privileges for five years.

-- The other big piece of Tampa news on Saturday is that the prize rookie David Price is being called up to AAA and will start on Wednesday. Price is 11-0 in the minor leagues, and is very close to being called up to the big club.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

              MLB

We will update when projected scores are available.

              Sunday, August 10

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox [TBS | 2:05 PM ET]

Red Sox: Clay Buchholz needs a strong performance to keep his spot in Boston's rotation. In his last seven starts, Buchholz has allowed four runs or more a ridiculous six times. He also hasn't gotten out of the sixth inning in any one of those outings. Buchholz has been miserable on the road this season where he's 0-5 with an ERA of 7.68 in eight starts. The OVER is 6-3-1 in Buchholz's last 10 starts.

Red Sox are 1-8 in Buchholz's last 9 road starts.
The OVER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - 1B Kevin Youkilis (.317; hand) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-120, O/U 10.5): Gavin Floyd hasn't pitched great over his last three starts, but the White Sox have still been able to win every one of those games. In his last 17.2 innings of work, Floyd has allowed 10 runs. However, two of those games were on the road. Today, Floyd returns home where he is 7-2 with a stellar 2.98 ERA. Floyd has one relief appearance against the Red Sox where he was lit up for four runs in just 3.2 innings. The OVER is 4-0 in Floyd's last four starts.

White Sox are 1-8 in the last 9 meetings.
The OVER is 16-6-1 in Chicago's last 23 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels [YES | 3:35 PM ET]

Yankees: Veteran Andy Pettitte appears to be wearing down some. Pettitte has lost his last two starts, allowing 17 hits and 14 runs in just 10.1 innings of work. Pettitte has been solid away from Yankee Stadium this year, going 7-4 with a 3.87 ERA. He's faced the Angels 23 times in his career, compiling a 12-7 record against the Halos. After pitching seven straight UNDERS, the OVER has cashed easily is Pettitte's last three outings.

The OVER is 12-3 in New York's last 15 games overall.
The OVER is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Ivan Rodriguez (.291; knee) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Angels (-140, O/U 9): Joe Saunders continues to dominate in 2008. The Angels have won his last four starts and are 7-3 in his last 10 outings. As good as Saunders has been this season, he can't be too happy about facing the Yankees. In two career starts versus the Bombers, Saunders has a 10.80 ERA, and Yankee hitters are batting a robust .361 against him. Despite only allowing seven runs in his last three starts, the OVER is 3-0 over that span.

Angels are 10-2 in their last 12 home games.
Angels are 18-5 in their last 23 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Maicer Izturis (.263; thumb) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Cardinals: Chris Carpenter makes his third start of the season today after pitching well in his first two outings, both St. Louis wins. Carpenter has only allowed one run in nine innings of work so far this season. He has impressive career numbers against the Cubs, going 7-2 with an ERA of 3.07 in 13 starts. Even though Carpenter has done his job, both of his starts have gone OVER the total.

Cardinals are 7-14 in the last 21 meetings.
The OVER is 9-1-1 in St. Louis' last 11 road games.

Key Injuries - OF Chris Duncan (.248; neck) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-150): Ryan Dempster has only lost twice in his last 10 starts and he's allowed one run or less an amazing six times during that stretch. Dempster has been close to unbeatable at Wrigley Field where he's 10-2 with a 2.77 ERA on the year. Dempster has struggled against the Cardinals in his career. He's just 4-5 with a 5.09 ERA versus the Redbirds. The UNDER is 4-1 in Dempster's last five starts at home.

Cubs are 11-3 in Dempster's 14 home starts.
Cubs are 8-2 in their last 10 Sunday games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                MLB

                Sunday, August 10

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Gil Meche, Kansas City Royals (10-9, 4.17)

Meche, who started the campaign with eight setbacks in his first 14 starts, is 3-0 in his last three outings with a solid 1.80 ERA.

Meche is fresh off a home victory over the Boston Red Sox in which he lasted six innings, striking out nine. He is undefeated in his last eight at home and has relinquished just 15 ERs and five HRs in that stretch.

Meche also has a 4.66 career-ERA versus the Minnesota Twins.

The Royals are 5-0 in Meche's last five home starts and are 6-0 in his last six overall.

Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondbacks (16-4, 3.04)

The D-backs, despite a mediocre record, are leading the NL West and Webb is the fundamental reason for their success. Webb is 3-0 with a solid 1.88 ERA in his last three starts and is undefeated in his last seven overall.

In his last six starts, Webb has relinquished just eight earned runs in 45 IP. He is 4-4 at home and has a 1.90 career-ERA against the Atlanta Braves.

The Diamondbacks are 14-3 in Webb's last 17 starts against a club with a losing record and are 25-10 in Webb's last 35 home starts.

                Slumping

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees (12-9, 4.13)

Pettitte has lost two straight, conceding 13 earned runs and three HRs in the process. He is also 1-2 in his last three road starts.

Pettitte is 1-2 in his last three overall with an 8.27 ERA. In his last start, an 8-6 road setback to the lowly Texas Rangers, Pettite surrendered five ERs in a mere six IP. He is also 0-1 with a 15.9 ERA in one game against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Yankees are 1-4 in Pettitte's last five on four days of rest and are 3-9 in their last 12 meetings against the Angels in L.A.

Note: Sorry, this segment is out of our normal sequence.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

                  13) Kudos to NBC/USA Network for televising basketball from China at 2:30am Sunday morning; gives me something to do as I type this. Some of the Spanish players have first name on the back of their jerseys, some have their last name. Very 70's-ish.

                  12) Greece-Spain looks like a City League game in Utah. Greece has one black dude who looks like Tractor Traylor, except he can't play. Pau Gasol is soft in any language; dude just threw him a great pass as he came off a screen and it went through his hands. Terribly overrated player.

                  11) Marc Gasol, part of the package Memphis dealt his brother away for, looks like Kevin Nash, the pro wrestler; a very large man. Not very mobile, but very, very big. Hey wait, is Darko Milicic in the Olympics? I forget which country he is from.

                  10) I'd watch every basketball game, but some of them are on Telemundo, which is a pay channel that is Spanish; why in the name of Pepe Sanchez would I pay for a foreign TV channel?

                  9) NBC has the luscious Alex Flanagan as a latenight anchor on the Olympics; she sure is gorgeous, but from watching her the last few years on ESPN, she seems uncomfortable when in front of a camera, not the best trait for a studio anchor.

                  8) 7,000 people showed up at Jets' camp Saturday to see Kellen Clemens take snaps as the backu-- oh wait, they showed up to see Brett Favre, didn't they? We New Yorkers sure are astute.

                  7) Steeler backup QB Charlie Batch broke his collarbone; team is bringing in Byron Leftwich for tryout. When exactly are the Packers going to sign a veteran signal-caller?

                  6) Speaking of injuries, Arizona 2B Orlando Hudson may have suffered a bad thumb injury; he is glue to the infield-- this isn't good news for the struggling Snakes, half-game up on LA.

                  5) Funny thing is, if Joe Torre makes it to playoffs this season, it is only because the Red Sox handed him Manny Ramirez for basically nothing. Manny stayed hot Saturday, going 3-5.

                  4) Jimmy Rollins is 10 for 19 in his last five games. Drama in the Phils' dugout Saturday, as starting pitcher Myers went at it in the dugout with skipper Manuel over being removed from the game in 8th inning. Tensions run high this time of year.

                  3) Vladimir Guerrero has hit 108 career first-pitch home runs.

                  2) Brewers are first team in four years to have pitchers throw consecutive complete game shutouts. '04 Twins were the last, with Radke-Santana-Lohse tossing three in a row.

                  1) Will PGA officials set up Oakland Hills easier Sunday due to almost two full days of golf having to be crammed into a single Sunday? CBS had to be happier than hell Saturday; due to the rainout, they got to show Eldrick Woods all afternoon, back in the 2000 PGA, when he beat Bob May in a playoff.

The Nats have been handcuffed by C.C. Sunday, August 10

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Houston at Cincinnati (-120, 9 1/2)

The Houston Astros have been one of the NL's hottest teams lately, while the Cincinnati Reds have been the league's worst. Recent developments on the injury front, however, could close that gap considerably.

After losing Carlos Lee to a broken left pinkie finger, the Astros hope to overcome the hot-hitting outfielder's absence Sunday when they close a four-game road series against the Reds, who will welcome ace Aaron Harang back from the disabled list.

Since falling into last place in the NL Central on July 23, Houston (57-59) has won 11 of 15 games to pull into the outskirts of contention in the NL wild-card race. The Astros are in sixth place, trailing first-place Milwaukee by 8 1-2 games.

Lee has been a major factor in Houston's surge, leading the majors with a .390 batting average since June 20 and batting .500 (15-for-30) with four homers and 13 RBIs in nine August games.

Lee, however, won't get a chance to continue his hot streak anytime soon. He left Saturday night's 3-1 win over Cincinnati with a broken left pinkie after getting hit by a pitch from Reds starter Bronson Arroyo in the third inning, and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks.

"It's tough to lose him," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said of Lee, the NL leader with 100 RBIs. "It didn't look good. He carried us the last month-and-a-half. It's a big hole to fill, but we're capable of filling it. I'm just now starting to suck it up."

Making matters worse for the Astros is the news that Harang (3-11, 4.76 ERA) will start Sunday's finale for the Reds (52-66). The right-hander has won at least 10 games in each of the last four seasons, including back-to-back 16-win campaigns in 2006 and 2007. He's struggled this year, but told the Reds' official Web site that he's eager to return after almost a month on the disabled list with a strained right forearm.

"Everybody says it's fine for a while to get a couple of days off," Harang said. "But once you've got to come to the field every day, being around the guys and not being able to go out there and help, it eventually gets to you."

                      Pick: Houston

                      Minnesota at Kansas City (-105, 8 1/2)

The Minnesota Twins' high-scoring offense helped them move back into first place in the AL Central for the second time in a week.

To keep their lead, though, they'll have to cool off Gil Meche, who takes the mound for Kansas City on Sunday, trying to help the Royals avoid a three-game sweep.

The Twins (64-51) beat the Royals (53-64) 7-3 on Saturday for their third straight win overall and ninth in 11 games this season against Kansas City. Delmon Young homered and rookie Denard Span had a two-run single during a five-run sixth inning.

Jason Kubel tripled to lead off the sixth before Young was hit by a pitch from Zack Greinke. While Twins manager Ron Gardenhire thought it was intentional, the left fielder wasn't sure.

"When it's so close to your head you don't know what's going on," Young said. "If (it was intentional), I was hoping for the ribs or lower. We scored five runs after that. Whatever it did was a good thing for us."

The win, combined with Chicago's loss to Boston, moved the Twins a half-game ahead of the White Sox into first place in the AL Central. It's the second time this week they've been in first place. Last Sunday, Minnesota took the lead in the division, but lost its next two games to fall back into second.

The Twins have averaged 6.2 runs in their last six games, led by Span, who is hitting 10-for-26 (.385) with seven RBIs, and Kubel, who is batting .368 (7-for-19) with two homers and six runs scored in his last five games.

Since the All-Star break, Minnesota has the fifth-highest scoring offense in the AL at 5.4 runs per game.

Continuing that prolific offense won't be easy Sunday against Meche (10-9, 4.17), who has won his last four starts and seven of his last eight decisions. He has a 2.80 ERA during that stretch.

                      Pick: Over

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 7

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                            SPECIAL GUEST

Barry Bonds made an appearance during a pregame ceremony celebrating the Giants' 50th anniversary in San Francisco. After Willie Mays spoke to the crowd, Bonds walked to a podium behind the pitcher's mound and told the crowd "I'm not retired.'' He then watched two innings of the game from a front-row seat next to Giants owner Peter Magowan.

                            SPECIAL WIN

Tampa Bay beat Seattle 8-7 in 11 innings for their 70th win of the season, matching the most wins in franchise history. The Rays won 70 in 2004 under manager Lou Piniella.

Troy Glaus, hitless in his first 30 at-bats against the Cubs this season, had two of the Cardinals' four homers off Carlos Zambrano and finished with five RBIs to help St. Louis beat Chicago 12-3. Glaus' second homer of the day and 21st of the season was a three-run shot in the fifth that finished Zambrano, who suffered his first loss of the season at Wrigley Field, where he'd been 6-0.

                            JAW SESSION

Brett Myers didn't want to leave with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth against the Pirates. When Phillies manager Charlie Manuel came out to the mound to get him, Myers muttered a few expletives. Manuel went after Myers in the dugout and the two briefly exchanged words nose-to-nose. Myers said he just wanted to stay in the game, and said they had patched things up. Manuel said he prefers a pitcher who doesn't want to exit a game. "It was two strong-willed people kind of disagreeing,'' Manuel said. "Everything is all right. He wanted to stay in. I like that. In fact, if he doesn't want to stay in, I'd be mad.''

                            SWING

Paul Byrd pitched a six-hitter to win his fourth consecutive start, Cleveland's 4-2 victory Toronto. Byrd had dropped five straight decisions between June 11 and July 4.

The home run was the 376th of his career, tying him with Carlton Fisk for 62nd on the career list.

                            FIGURING THEM OUT

Baltimore's Daniel Cabrera stymied the struggling Texas Rangers for six innings of a 9-0 win. Cabrera allowed four hits in an unusually effective performance against the Rangers. The right-hander was 1-6 with a 6.33 ERA in eight previous appearances against Texas, including 0-3 at home.

                            BACK TO FORM

Francisco Liriano had his second straight strong start since being recalled from the minors, giving up three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings of the Twins 7-3 victory over Kansas City. Liriano is 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts, allowing three earned runs and nine hits in 11 2-3 innings since returning to the Twins from Triple-A Rochester, where he had won his final 10 decisions.

                            INJURED

White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras ruptured his left Achilles' tendon in the second inning of the game against the Red Sox. Contreras was activated before the game. He had been on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tendinitis and hadn't started since July 13 at Texas. ... Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek may be out for the season after a MRI revealed a torn deltoid ligament in his right ankle. Grudzielanek went on the disabled list on Aug. 2, one day after colliding with first baseman Ross Gload while catching a fly ball to shallow right off the bat of Juan Uribe of the Chicago White Sox.

                            DEAL

The Royals traded pitcher Horacio Ramirez to the Chicago White Sox for minor league outfielder Paulo Orlando. The deal was completed after the Kansas City Royals' 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The left-hander was 1-1 with a 2.59 earned run average in 15 relief appearances with the Royals, who signed him as a minor league free agent on May 21 after he was released in spring training by Seattle.

                            STAT

The Yankees' Jason Giambi hit his 23rd homer of the year. Of his 81 hits this season, 37 have been for extra bases.

                            OUCH!

Houston slugger Carlos Lee, the NL leader in RBIs, broke his pinkie when he was hit by a pitch thrown by Bronson Arroyo and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks. ... All-Star third baseman Ryan Braun was pulled from the Brewers' 6-0 victory over Washington because of tightness in his lower back. Braun struck out in the first inning, spiking his helmet into the ground as Ray Durham was thrown out at second attempting to steal for a double play. Braun said he felt the tightness on a 2-1 pitch during the at-bat. He was listed as day-to-day, and said muscles on both sides of his ribcage tightened. ... Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson left the game against the Atlanta Braves because of an apparent wrist injury. Hudson was attempting to field an errant throw from reliever Juan Cruz when Atlanta catcher Brian McCann collided with Hudson's left wrist. Hudson immediately fell to the infield dirt and rolled in pain before leaving the game.

                            SEASON-ENDING INJURIES

White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras is out for at least nine months after rupturing his left Achilles' tendon in a 6-2 loss to the Red Sox. Contreras left the game after crumpling to the ground attempting to cover first on a grounder in the second inning. The 36-year-old Contreras limped past first base before clutching his leg and pounding his fist on the ground. He needed help to get off the field. Contreras, 7-6 with a 4.50 ERA, was activated before the game from a 15-day stint on the disabled list with tendinitis in his elbow.

                            SPEAKING

"This a pennant race. I want men on the field. I keep telling (general manager Kenny Williams) we got what we need, but some people make me look bad, some people make me look disappointed, some people make me think about what we have. Some players should look themselves in the mirror and be embarrassed, and they should be better, that's all I can say.'' - White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen after reliever Boone Logan allowed four runs without recording and out in a 6-2 loss to Boston. Logan was sent to the minors after the game.
