    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, August 5

Chris Carpenter will get his second start of the season on Tuesday night as the Cards get a visit from Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup . . .

    Event of the day . . .

Carpenter wasn't dominant in his much-anticipated return from the disabled list last week, but his team got the win - and he didn't get hurt. The righthander went four innings against the Braves in his 2008 debut, giving up a single earned run on five hits and fanning two batters. St. Louis ended up winning the game by a score of 7-2.

And now Carpenter's comeback will continue at home on Tuesday, as his Cardinals play host to the Dodgers in an 8:15pm ET contest. Both St. Louis and Los Angeles had Monday off, so the clubs should be well-rested heading into this key matchup of playoff contenders. The Cards are right in the middle of the NL Wild Card race with the Brewers, while the Dodgers are right there with the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Chad Billingsley (11-9, 3.05 ERA) will take the mound for the Dodgers on Tuesday night, and he'll be looking for his third consecutive victory. The righthander tossed a gem in his last outing, giving up just five hits and fanning eight in a complete-game shutout versus the Giants. Los Angeles is 7-3 in Billingsley's last 10 starts.

    Non-event of the day . . .

The Braves and Giants have little to play for this season, and baseball fans have little to watch on Tuesday when these clubs meet again. Mike Hampton (0-0, 10.00 ERA) will make his third start of the year for Atlanta, and you can tell by his ERA that the first two didn't go so well. Jonathan Sanchez (8-7, 4.61 ERA) will get the ball for San Francisco, and the Giants are a miserable 0-5 over his last five outings.

    Also on the schedule . . .

The Marlins and Phillies will begin a key National League series on Tuesday, with Josh Johnson (1-0, 4.18 ERA) taking on Jamie Moyer (10-6, 3.79 ERA). Other NL games on tap: Houston at the Cubs, San Diego at the Mets, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Washington at Colorado, and Pittsburgh at Arizona. Ace Brandon Webb (15-4, 3.04 ERA) will get that start for the Diamondbacks.

Over in the American League the Tigers will be looking to make up some ground in the AL Central when they start a series with the White Sox - Nate Robertson (6-8, 6.06 ERA) will face Gavin Floyd (11-6, 3.43 ERA) in that one. Elsewhere, it's Oakland at Toronto, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, the Yankees at Texas, Boston at Kansas City, Baltimore at the Angels, and Minnesota at Seattle.

    News from the wire . . .

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has been suspended by the team for the first two games of the regular season for fighting in practice . . . Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia continues to miss time with a strained calf . . . Padres pitcher Greg Maddux and Mariners pitcher Jarrod Washburn could still find themselves traded over the next week . . . Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano impressed in his return from the minors on Sunday, tossing six scoreless innings in a win over the Indians.

    Peek at the future . . .

It'll be Detroit's Justin Verlander vs. Chicago's John Danks in Wednesday's top pitching matchup . . . Phil Mickelson is the early 8/1 Vegas favorite to win the PGA Championship later this week . . . the Giants and the Patriots will both play their preseason openers on Thursday, with New York at Detroit and New England hosting Baltimore . . . the men's basketball tournament at the Olympics gets started on Sunday.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Tampa, Boston, Bronx all lost in NL East; three contenders in NL East all had the night off.

-- Cubs, Brewers both lost, while St Louis had the night off.

-- Will the A's ever win another game? What a nightmare.....

-- Joba Chamberlain left game last night with a stiff shoulder, a potential disaster for the Bronx Bombers.

-- Pirates are 3-7 since selling players to the fatcat teams.

-- When you go to your Fantasy Football draft, keep in mind that Steve Smith is suspended for first two games; Brandon Marshall for three, but might get it reduced to two games.

Tuesday's List of 13: Ranking the National League teams

        16) Braves-- Braves' telecast Monday was in honor of late Skip Caray, a beloved figure in broadcasting. They told stories the whole game about their late friend. Pretty good tribute. Lot of laughter, which is the way Caray would have wanted it.

        15) Reds-- 0-7 when Homer Bailey starts, 2-9 on road if Cueto starts. Lost six of their last seven road games overall.

        14) Nationals-- Washington won its last four games, scoring 28 runs, since releasing Lopez/LoDuca after Thursday's game.

        13) Pirates-- I have to laugh when I read Pirates made trades to set themselves up for their next good team. Other than Maholm would you have faith in any of their pitchers? There are high school kids who weren't born last time Bucs were good team.

        12) Giants-- They need to sign some veteran position players, because their starting pitching is good enough to win with.

        11) Astros-- Streaky team that just swept Mets for first time in fifteen years. Their farm system is getting terrible grades, and they really need an infusion of young pitching.

        10) Padres-- Their young catcher Hundley throws ball as well as any catcher I've seen in while. An interesting week for Chris Young, pitching in New York and Denver.

        9) Rockies-- Home losses to Washington are going to doom them to also-ran status. Jimenez is 4-0, 1.24 his last four starts.

        8) Mets-- Mets lost five of last six Santana road starts; bullpen has allowed 13 runs in their last 8.2 IP relieving Santana. Mets are also 2-5 on road when Pedro Martinez starts.

        7) Diamondbacks-- Randy Johnson allowed one run in his last 20 innings, is 5-0, 1.67 in his last five starts. Fell behind 3-0 in first inning Monday, rallied to beat beleaguered Buccos, 13-7.

        6) Marlins-- Fish are 12-3 in last fifteen Nolasco starts; a huge start his next time out, at Shea Friday night. Nolasco had 13 Ks vs Colorado Saturday, no walks, throwing 93 pitches in 8 IP.

        5) Cardinals-- They don't look like much, but they're mentally tough and right there, waiting for Brewers to implode. Ankiel is nursing an injury, but Carpenter is back in the rotation.

        4) Brewers-- Lost seven of last nine games; Parra was sailing along in Cincinnati Monday, until he walked two guys in front of the pitcher, then Arroyo doubled in two runs. Then wheels fell apart for team not known for having lot of poise.

        3) Dodgers-- Manny keeps going 8-13, Joe Torre might grow some dredlocks. Kershaw didn't allow run in his last dozen IP, after being 0-3, 5.18 in his first nine major league starts.

        2) Phillies-- Went 5-1 on road last week, now go home for big week, Marlins/Pirates. Moyer has beaten the Marlins 10 or 11 times in row-- he starts first game of series Tuesday night.

        1) Cubs-- Zambrano is 4-1, 2.01 in his last six starts. If they can keep Kerry Wood healthy, this is best team in National League

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Marlins: While Josh Johnson has earned just one win this season, that doesn't mean he hasn't been a huge asset to his teammates since his return on July 10. The Marlins are 4-0 in Johnson's starts so far, with him getting the victory last time out against the Mets on Wednesday. Ironically, that wasn't his best start either, as he allowed four runs and eight hits in 6.2 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Johnson's two road starts have resulted in one-run wins at Los Angeles and Chicago.

Marlins are 10-4 in their last 14 games as an underdog.
Marlins are 6-2 in Johnson's last 8 road starts.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (-155, O/U 9.5): Jamie Moyer brings a perfect 10-0 career record into Tuesday's meeting vs. Florida to go along with an impressive 3.03 ERA. Moyer has earned three of those wins this season but saw the shakiest of the three come at home back on June 1. He surrendered five runs and seven hits to the Marlins in seven innings of the 7-5 victory, and he will be making his first home start since July 10 vs. St. Louis. Moyer is 4-3 in 10 home starts this season with an inflated 4.70 ERA.

Phillies are 10-0 in Moyer's last 10 starts vs. Florida.
Phillies are 7-1 in their last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Pedro Feliz (.256 back) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Indians: Fausto Carmona has yet to display his past dominant form in two starts since returning from a hip injury, although he is coming off a win against the Tigers on Thursday. Carmona gave up two earned runs and five hits in 6.1 innings of a 9-4 victory vs. Detroit after getting shelled in his previous outing, surrendering nine runs and seven hits in 2.1 innings against Minnesota. He is 1-0 in four road starts with a 3.09 ERA and beat the Rays in the only previous meeting.

Indians are 2-7 in their last 9 games on field turf.
Indians are 10-26 in their last 36 games as an underdog.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-130, O/U 8.5): Edwin Jackson is coming off a pair of wins, although both took place on the road. Jackson has not been as good at home this season, going 3-5 in 11 starts with a 4.64 ERA. He was hit hard in his last start there against the Blue Jays on July 20, giving up six runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings of a 9-4 loss. One key concern for Jackson backers is that he has not gone deep into games lately, pitching five innings or less in each of his last three starts.

Rays are 40-12 in their last 52 home games.
The UNDER is 10-2 in Tampa Bay's last 12 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Rocco Baldelli (mitochondrial disorder) is questionable.
SS Jason Bartlett (.256; finger) is doubtful.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers [YES | 8:05 PM ET]

Yankees (-170, O/U 11.5): Texas native Andy Pettitte has not had an easy time against the Rangers during his career, going 9-7 in 19 starts against them with a bloated 5.36 ERA. However, he has pitched quite well on the road this season with a 7-3 mark and 3.50 ERA in 11 starts. Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Tuesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

Rich Harden, Chicago Cubs (1-1, 1.11)

It hasn't taken Harden long to settle in with his new club. He is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA since being traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Cubs.

Harden has relinquished just nine hits and three earned runs in his last 24.1 IP as a member of the Cubs. He has also struck out 39 batters in that period and ranks 12th in the majors with 131 Ks.

The Cubs are 40-12 in their last 52 home games and are 8-2 in their last 10 meetings with the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field.

Chad Billingsley, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-9, 3.05)

Billingsley has been lights out for the Dodgers lately. In fact, he has been one of their most consistent pitchers since cracking the rotation 2006.

Billingsley had 12 wins last season and is on pace to surpass that mark. He is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 2.05 ERA and is 4-5 on the road with a solid 2.84 ERA. Billingsley ranks second in the NL with 145 strikeouts.

The Dodgers are 7-2 in Billingsley's last nine starts and are 6-1 in their last seven against the NL Central.

                Slumping

Zach Duke, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-9, 5.27)

Duke is winless in his last three starts and has a lofty 11.25 ERA in that span. He has also relinquished 30 earned runs and eight HRs in his last 24.1 IP.

Duke is 0-3 on the road with a 6.24 ERA. In his last road start, an 11-3 setback to the Colorado Rockies, he surrendered nine earned runs in just five IP. He is 1-1 with a 5.29 career ERA against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Pirates are 7-26 in Duke's last 33 road starts and are 1-5 in their last six visits to Chase Field.

Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants (8-7, 4.61)

Sanchez has just two triumphs in his last eight and is 0-2 in his past three with a 10.50 ERA in that period. He has also relinquished 14 earned runs in his past 11.2 IP.

Sanchez is 2-3 with a 4.16 ERA at home this season and is 0-1 with a soaring 10.13 career ERA against the Atlanta Braves. The left-hander has also relinquished 16 earned runs and three home runs in his last four at AT&T Park.

The Giants are 0-4 in Sanchez' last four home starts and are 9-24 in their last 33 overall in San Fran.

                  SCOREBOARD

                  Tuesday, Aug. 5

Pittsburgh at Arizona (9:40 p.m. EDT). Brandon Webb (15-4) tries to build on his major league-leading win total when the Diamondbacks take on Zach Duke (4-9) and the Pirates.

                  STARS

                  Monday

                  - Raul Ibanez, Mariners, drove in six runs - in one inning - on a grand slam and a two-run single to lift Seattle to an 11-6 win over Minnesota.

                  - Roy Halladay, Blue Jays, allowed a run and four hits in eight innings, striking out eight in Toronto's 6-1 win over Oakland.

                  - Cliff Lee, Indians, tied for the major league lead with his 15th win, giving up two runs in seven innings to help Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 5-2.

                  - Marlon Byrd, Rangers, hit a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, leading Texas past the New York Yankees 9-5.

                  - Mark Reynolds, Diamondbacks, went 3-for-5 with his team-leading 23rd home run as Arizona beat Pittsburgh 13-7.

                  - Willie Harris, Nationals, homered and drove in three runs to lift Washington to its fourth straight win, 9-4 over Colorado.

                  ANGRY IN AUGUST

Two Brewers had a confrontation in the dugout during a 6-3 loss to Cincinnati, Milwaukee's seventh loss in nine games. After Manny Parra left for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, first baseman Prince Fielder went up to him in the dugout and exchanged words. Fielder then shoved Parra twice before teammates pulled him away. It was reminiscent of Aug. 2 last season, when manager Ned Yost got into a heated dispute with catcher Johnny Estrada in the dugout tunnel during a loss to the Mets and players intervened. That came during a run of 10 losses in 14 games, a fade that dropped Milwaukee out of first place.

                  STORMY WEATHER

A powerful storm halted Monday night's game between the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs, and fans at Wrigley Field were advised to take cover on the concourse during the early stages of the delay. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for downtown Chicago, and a siren went off in the neighborhood surrounding Wrigley Field at about 8:05. After the rain subsided and the field was made playable by the grounds crew, the game resumed after a delay of 2 hours, 45 minutes. But the teams played only 50 minutes before crashing thunder and lightning caused another halt in play. Houston led 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth and won by that score when the game was finally called after a 39-minute delay.

                  TEN SPOT

Raul Ibanez had a grand slam and six RBIs - all in a wild seventh inning - and the Seattle Mariners staged their biggest comeback of a lost season to stun the Minnesota Twins 11-6. Minnesota starter Glen Perkins cruised into the sixth with a 6-0 lead and was still comfortably up 6-1 with one out in the seventh. Seattle looked set to tie its season low of 28 games under .500, until Ibanez triggered a 10-run inning. Ibanez set Seattle's record for RBIs in one frame, one better than Ken Griffey Jr. had in the fifth inning on April 29, 1999, at the old Kingdome. It was the most runs the Mariners scored in an inning in nearly five years, since Aug. 30, 2003, against Baltimore.

                  AILING

Yankees starter Joba Chamberlain was removed from the Yankees' 9-5 loss to the Rangers in the fifth inning with what the club announced was a stiff right shoulder. After Chamberlain gave up a two-out single to Marlon Byrd, assistant trainer Steve Donohue and manager Joe Girardi ran onto the field to check on Chamberlain. He could not continue and was replaced by Edwar Ramirez. ... Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez will have surgery to repair fraying of the labrum in his right shoulder next week, ending his season after he played in just 23 games. ... The Braves placed reliever Rafael Soriano on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season because of an inflamed right elbow.

                  A CLEAN SLATE

Jason Giambi arrived in the Yankees clubhouse without his famous mustache. Giambi, who began to swing well around the time he decided to grow a mustache back in May, has been slumping, hitting .234 with three homers in July and going 0-for-9 through three August games. He shaved after being taken out for defensive purposes Sunday against the Angels. Perhaps the mustache was weighing him down. In his first two mustache-free at-bats, he hit an RBI single in the first and an upper-deck home run in the fourth. He hadn't had a hit since Thursday.

                  UNLIKELY ACES

A trio of unlikely aces took the mound trying to tie Brandon Webb for the major league lead with their 15th wins. One made it, two did not. Cleveland's Cliff Lee held Tampa Bay to two runs in seven innings to improve to 15-2. But Joe Saunders of the Angels got a no-decision when closer Francisco Rodriguez blew a 5-1 lead in the ninth against Baltimore. Colorado's Aaron Cook failed in his attempt, giving up seven runs - four earned - in 5 2-3 innings of a 9-4 loss to Washington.

                  WALK-OFF WALK

Chone Figgins drew a bases-loaded walk from All-Star closer George Sherrill with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels regrouped to beat the Baltimore Orioles after Francisco Rodriguez blew a four-run lead. Sherrill, working his second inning of relief, gave up a leadoff double to Torii Hunter, who advanced on a groundout before Howie Kendrick was intentionally walked. Juan Rivera popped out, but Sherrill walked Jeff Mathis and went to 3-2 on Figgins before throwing his next pitch above the letters.

                  SLUMPING

The Blue Jays beat Oakland 6-1, handing the Athletics their season-high seventh straight loss. Oakland is a major league-worst 2-14 since the All-Star break, and 9-23 since June 28. The slumping Athletics have scored just 13 runs over their losing streak.

                  SPEAKING

"If you want to know what happened or what transpired - blow-by-blow or what words were said - I'm sorry, you're not going to know. It's private. It's between us, and it's not a big deal. And it's not the first time it ever happened, and it won't be the last.'' - Brewers manager Ned Yost after first baseman Prince Fielder shoved pitcher Manny Parra twice in the dugout during a 6-3 loss to the Reds.

                  SEASONS

                  Aug. 5

1921 - Pittsburgh radio station KDKA and announcer Harold Arlin provided listeners with the first broadcast of a major league game. The Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5.

1932 - Detroit pitcher Tommy Bridges lost his bid for a perfect game on a bloop single by the 27th Washington batter, pinch-hitter Dave Harris. The Tigers beat the Senators 13-0.

1940 - John Whitehead of the St. Louis Browns pitched a rain-shortened, six-inning no-hitter for a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader.

1942 - Don Kolloway's two-out steal of home in the fifth inning was the only run as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0.

1969 - Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell became the only player to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium. Stargell's shot off of Los Angeles' Alan Foster cleared the right-field pavilion and landed 506 feet from home plate. Stargell hit the right-field pavilion roof on May 8, 1973, off Andy Messersmith.

1973 - Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves pitched a 9-0 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

1984 - Cliff Johnson of the Blue Jays hit his 19th career pinch-hit homer to set a major league record as Toronto beat the Orioles 4-3 at Memorial Stadium.

1999 - Mark McGwire became the 16th member of the 500-home run club, hitting two homers - Nos. 500 and 501 - in the St. Louis Cardinals' loss to San Diego. McGwire reached the 500-homer mark in the fewest at-bats - doing it in his 5,487th at-bat. Babe Ruth held the previous mark, having done it in 5,801 at-bats.

2001 - The Cleveland Indians tied a major league record and became the first team in 76 years to overcome a 12-run deficit to win, defeating the Seattle Mariners 15-14 in 11 innings. Jolbert Cabrera's broken-bat, one-out single in the 11th, the 40th hit of the game, scored Kenny Lofton from second with the winning run to end the 4-hour, 11-minute game. The Indians, who fell behind 12-0 after three innings, trailed 14-2 when they batted in the seventh.

2005 - Albert Pujols became the first player in major league history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first five seasons, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 11-3. Pujols hit a two-run shot in the first for his 190th homer since breaking in with the Cardinals in 2001.

2006 - Trevor Hoffman set a major league record with his 11th 30-save season and the San Diego Padres defeated the Washington Nationals 6-3.

2007 - Tom Glavine earned his 300th victory in an 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The 41-year-old left-hander became the 23rd pitcher with 300 victories and only the fifth lefty to win 300.

Today's birthdays: Carl Crawford 27; Mark Mulder 31; Eric Hinske 31.

                    Milwaukee vs. Cincinnati (-125, 9)

Everything is rosy for a young team when it is winning. When it has lost seven of its last 10 and slipped to five games back in the divisional race, things get a little testy.

Just ask the Brewers. They had a little dugout dustup Sunday night in a 6-3 loss to Cincy when Prince Fielder gave starting pitcher Manny Parra a shove and went after him for no obvious reason in the seventh inning.

The Brew Crew won't say what the issue was, but it likely has something to do with their recent hitting woes. After seeing the over cash in six straight games, under bettors have taken home the money over the last four games. The Brewers are also a miserable 10-for-104 over their past 13 games with runners in scoring position.

                    Pick: under

New York vs. Texas (+145, 11)

Andy Pettitte doesn't see too many totals rise as high as 11 runs when he's scheduled to start. Then again, the Yankees don't usually have to play in this kind of heat, either.

Lately, the temperatures have been soaring well above 100 degrees for Rangers games and it's showing in the runs column. Texas is averaging nearly seven runs per game through eight games of its current home stand. The over is 5-2-1 during that stretch and oddsmakers have jacked up the total again today.

The high is expected to be around 100 degrees again for today's game in Arlington. The Texas native, Pettitte, should be used to the heat but the Yankees have also seen the over profit in nine of their last 10 games.

                    Pick: over

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers [YES | 8:05 PM ET]

Yankees (-170, O/U 11.5): Texas native Andy Pettitte has not had an easy time against the Rangers during his career, going 9-7 in 19 starts against them with a bloated 5.36 ERA. Listed pitchers must go: F. Carmona vs. E. Jackson

Keys to selection: Today’s baseball pick will be the UNDER 9.0 -130 between the Indians and Rays. The Indians have been involved in some low scoring games of late, as the UNDER is now 4-0 in their last 4 contests and they send Fausto Carmona to the Hill this evening vs. Erwin Jackson. The UNDER is 22-10-2 for Cleveland in their last 35 games at home or away vs. AL East opponents.

Furthermore, the UNDER is 6-3-1 when Cleveland travels to Tampa Bay in their last 10 games and the last 4 games in Tampa Bay have gone UNDER the posted total.
Here’s a great system on the season that backs up our UNDER selection tonight.

Whenever you have a -120 to -140 Home Favorite this season playing under these current situations:

                              • During a night game
                              • Vs. Right handed pitchers

                              • Coming off a lost in game 1 of a series

The UNDER is 17-2-0 for the Home Faves in this role this season.
