  • Georgia suspends fifth player from season opener

Georgia LB Dewberry suspended 2 games after hospital incident

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia coach Mark Richt suspended linebacker Darius Dewberry for the Bulldogs' first two games for his role in an incident at an Athens-area hospital Sunday morning.

Dewberry, a junior who is the top backup at strongside linebacker, was seen on a hospital videotape oveturning trash cans and causing other damage.

Police initially failed to identify Dewberry. Richt did so later.

"Yeah, it's embarrassing," Richt said, "it's sad. It's certainly been a distraction. There is no way you can say it's not a distraction because it has been."

Dewberry is the fifth Georgia player suspended from playing in the Aug. 30 opener against Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 in the season's first USA Today Top 25 coaches' poll released Friday.

Dewberry was at the hospital while teammates Donovan Baldwin and Marcus Dowtin were being treated for injuries suffered in a bar fight earlier Sunday morning.

Junior long snapper Jeff Henson was suspended indefinitely Saturday morning after being arrested and charged with public intoxication and urinating in public. Henson was charged with a DUI last November and suspended one game, which he served during the Sugar Bowl.

Junior safety Donavon Baldwin, who was set to serve a one-game suspension after a DUI arrest in January, was also suspended indefinitely after an unrelated incident at a bar.

In addition, Fullback Fred Munzenmaier is suspended for two games for an alcohol-related incident, and offensive lineman Clint Boling is suspended for one game for a reckless-driving charge.

Defensive end Michael Lemon was kicked off the team after he was charged with felony battery last month for allegedly punching a student and breaking his eye socket.

I think in college football "if you ain't got criminals you ain't got championships" is seeming to be the case.I saw a thing on Joe Pa and when Penn State was high in academics and graduation rate they wern't as good as when they started having arrest and discipline problems and the more problems they had the better the football team got each year. The way the media ****** this shit now,the local college police seem to think that it's there shot at fame on Sportscenter if they can catch someone doing shit. The arrest for drugs and stealing and all that other shit I agree with but when they arrest a 20 year old for drinking(along with the other 5,000 20 year olds on campus) it seems a little overboard.Think back in the day of Bear Bryant. The police would have called the Bear at home at midnight to come get the player before they arrested him and I gurantee by the time that player was still running the stadium stairs the next morning he probably would keep his nose clean.Fuck all these classes and evaluations shit they make them go thru, let the coaches and seniors handle some of this petty shit.

Not Sticking Up For These Guys But Some Of The Shit I Got Into While I Was In College Mirrors Their Behavior. Dui's Bar Fights Arguments With Girlfriends(nothing Physical), Wish I Had Been Smarter But I Just Made Poor Decisions.

You Would Think With The Nfl Just A Step A Way They Would Be Smarter But TheY'RE Still Just Young Men Who Make Bad Decisions.

Oveturning trash cans and causing other damage in a hospital is more than a bad decision, its just being stupid. Doing that kind of crap at 20 years old is uncalled for.

I agree but the anger and emotions these athletes have to have inside to play at the high level they play, some of them can't turn off the switch.George Brett got mad and threw a water cooler at an ump when he was pissed. This guy gets pissed and throws a trash can and they arrest his ass.

I was 24 and still making stupid decisons.Fighting,Dui,arrests so just think how these kids are, being away from home for the first time,a little fame and recognition and next thing you know the local police is busting your ass.It took a good woman and a kid to change me but I don't think many of them have that at 19 and 20.

I agree! You are so right. Times certainly have changed. When I was in my 20s two guys duked it out. One got his ass kicked. But afterwards both guys dust themselves off then went their separate ways. Now the cops get involved and one or both combatants get busted.

I can't tell you how many times I was pulled over by the cops in my late teens and early 20s piss drunk. They'd tell you go straight home then send us on our way.
