Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on summer Saturday

            13) Why don’t strong lefty hitters like Howard-Ortiz-Delgado just bunt to beat shifts defenses use against them? Especially leading off an inning. Couple of those, and no more shifts.

            12) Redskins have one big advantage at start of ’08 season; none of their coaches has ever called plays in the NFL, so they have no histories to study, making them unpredictable.

            11) Packers offered Brett Favre $20M to go away….hell, they were only paying him $12M to play. Very strange situation.

            10) On ESPN poker telecasts, an ace-king hand is called "Big Slick". On a TV show I was watching the other night, A-K was referred to as "Anna Kournikova—looks good, never wins."

            9) Dodger pitcher Jason Johnson is a diabetic, and wears a device on back of his belt; it looks like pack for a microphone, but it helps him somehow monitor his diabetes.

            8) A’s scored three or less runs in 13 of Greg Smith’s last 16 starts. The LSU rookie is pretty good, but he’s gotten very little support this season.

            7) The greedy bastards at Exxon-Mobil made profit of $11.68B in second quarter of ’08, giving them a $22.57B profit for first half of the year. Despite these record profits, the thieving lowlives continue to charge over $4.10/gallon here in America’s second-favorite city, and our government lets it happen. Great.

            6) Three years ago, the NHL salary cap was $39M; this coming season, the salary floor is $40M, the cap $57.7M. Hockey is regaining some momentum.

            5) Infamous Cub fan Steve Bartman turned down $25,000 to show up at an event and sign a picture of him lunging for that foul ball in the 2003 playoff game. Lot of people tried to touch that ball; only he was unlucky enough to actually do it.

            4) In 2006, there were 1.11 homers a game; last year, 1.02; so far this year, 0.99. 1993 was last time there was an average of less than a homer a game in the big leagues.

            3) The five guys who were supposed to start on Rams’ offensive line LY started 18 of a possible 80 games; that and a -10 turnover ratio have to be turned around in order for St Louis to have any chance of making it to the playoffs n ’08. If they fix their OL, Rams could be pretty good.

            2) Jason Bay scored couple runs, made sliding catch for Red Sox in their extra inning game Friday night; Manny Ramirez hit into a double play in 9th inning as Dodgers lost to Arizona 2-1. Manny had gotten an infield hit earlier in game.

            1) Now that July 31 trading deadline in baseball has passed, the only guys who can be traded are guys who clear waivers; in other words, guys pretty much no one else wants, or whose contracts aren't ones you'd like to carry.
