    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, July 30

Chris Carpenter has pitched just six innings over the past two seasons, but he's slated to return to action on Wednesday night when the Cardinals play a road game in Atlanta.

Carpenter was 21-5 with a 2.83 ERA in 2005, and he was 15-8 with a 3.09 ERA in 2006. The 2007 campaign, though, was a writeoff because of the righthander's elbow problems, and the only action he's seen this season are minor league rehab outings. Whether or not Carpenter can come all the way back from Tommy John surgery remains to be seen, but the Cards could use him at full strength for their playoff push.

Also remaining to seen - the effect Carpenter will have on St. Louis' odds to win the National League pennant this season. With two top contenders sitting right in their division the Cards are going to be in tough even in the Wild Card race, and the Vegas oddsmakers had them pegged at 10/1 odds to take the pennant Wednesday morning.

Here are all the current lines for NL teams to advance to the World Series this season:

    Chicago Cubs --- 7/5
    Milwaukee Brewers --- 7/2
    New York Mets --- 9/2
    Philadelphia Phillies --- 13/2
    Arizona Diamondbacks --- 7/1
    Los Angeles Dodgers --- 10/1
    St. Louis Cardinals --- 10/1
    Florida Marlins --- 25/1
    Colorado Rockies --- 30/1
    Atlanta Braves --- 40/1
    Cincinnati Reds --- 50/1
    San Francisco Giants --- 75/1
    Houston Astros --- 125/1
    Pittsburgh Pirates --- 125/1
    San Diego Padres --- 250/1
    Washington Nationals --- 1000/1

St. Louis' Wednesday opponents, the Braves, are well back at 40/1, and they look like they're going to struggle to even get close to the .500 mark this season. Still, starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens (10-5, 3.02 ERA) has been a bright spot for them, and he'll counter Carpenter on Wednesday. The young righthander is coming off a nice win over the Phillies in which he tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits and fanning six.

Other NL games on tap for Wednesday include Colorado at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Florida, Philadelphia at Washington, Cincinnati at Houston, Arizona at San Diego, and San Francisco at the Dodgers. As well, the Cubs and Ryan Dempster (11-4, 2.99 ERA) will continue their series against the Brewers and starter Manny Parra (9-3, 3.72 ERA).

Over in the American League the top Wednesday matchup will again be in Boston, as the Red Sox and Josh Beckett (9-7, 3.83 ERA) host the Angels and Joe Saunders (13-5, 3.10 ERA). Beckett has lost each of his last two starts, although he gave up just five runs over 15 innings. The Angels are 2-0 in Saunders' previous two trips to the mound.

The Yankees host Baltimore on Wednesday, while Tampa Bay is in Toronto. The rest of the Wednesday AL schedule: Kansas City at Oakland, Detroit at Cleveland, Seattle at Texas, and the White Sox at Minnesota. Twins starter Livan Hernandez (10-7, 5.31 ERA) needs to turn in a good outing to avoid getting bumped from his team's rotation.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Rangers made five errors, blew 7-0 lead, gave up ten runs but scored twice in 9th to win 11-10. Typical Texas game.

-- Red Sox didn't get a hit until ninth inning vs John Lackey, as they fall three games behind Rays in loss column.

-- Matt Garza tossed a 106-pitch complete game as Rays won for just third time in last dozen road games, 3-0 at Toronto.

-- Carlos Zambrano tossed eight shutout innings as Cubbies whacked Milwaukee 7-1-- he threw 118 pitches in eight IP.

-- Chris Young threw five shutout innings in his return from facial fractures, with eight strikeouts; his last start was 5/21.

-- Chris Young the outfielder is 0-13 with seven strikeouts vs Chris Young the pitcher.

Wednesday's List of 13: Looking inside a cluttered mind......

        13) So Angels got even stronger Tuesday, trading for Mark Teixeira; then John Lackey almost threw a no-hitter in Fenway, and the Orange County Halos look like the best team in AL.

        12) First college football games are four weeks from tomorrow.

        11) Redskins are now 5.5-point favorites in Hall of Fame Game Sunday night in Canton, mainly because Manning isn't going to play-- how much would he have played anyway? Fact that Colt backup QBs are getting all the reps in practice helps them doesn't it? Not a big fan of investing in summer football.

        10) Where the hell is Macao? Our Olympic basketball team is practicing there, getting ready for Beijing.

        9) Olympics start August 8; hopefully, that will occupy people at ESPN enough so we can be spared constant coverage of the soap operas in Green Bay, Boston, and Cowboys' camp.

        8) I've become a big fan of Without a Trace and Cold Case- in latenight hours when I'm writing, excellent entertainment.

        7) If you're not from northeast and are looking for an idea for a good vacation, you could do worse than a Cooperstown trip, in between visits to Saratoga Race Track. Horses don't run on Tuesdays, so there's your chance to visit the Hall of Fame.

        6) Godson Tom Buckley is in Albuquerque this week, playing in a 17/under national baseball tournament. The lefty pitched four shutout innings yesterday against a club from Colorado, and a scoreless frame against a team from Arizona. If you're a college baseball coach (who gives scholarships) and you are interested in a quality lefty pitcher, e-mail me for contact info.

        5) Overheard people touting the $0.10 superfecta earlier in the week; they say it is a good value bet that occasionally nets big payoffs. All you have to do is pick the top four finishers in a horse race, and you win-- sounds easy, doesn't it? Yeah, OK

        4) I bought a Nissan Rogue in April-- very nice car. If you're in the market for a new vehicle, this one gets 27 mph on highway and is very comfortable. Highly recommended.

        3) Arizona catcher Snyder is back in the lineup after recovering from that most painful of injuries, the broken testicle. Catching is not for the faint of heart.

        2) This website is heading to South Carolina Halloween week for the Tennessee-South Carolina football game. Good chance to renew acquaintances with some good friends-- that should be a lot of fun. Always good to go to warm weather, too.

        1) Can we just get it over with and trade Manny for Favre?

              SCOREBOARD

              Wednesday, July 30

St. Louis at Atlanta (7 p.m. EDT). Chris Carpenter makes his 2008 debut for the Cardinals. The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner hasn't pitched in the majors since last year's season opener because of an elbow injury. He faces Jair Jurrjens, who is 10-5 with a 3.02 ERA in his first season with the Braves.

              STARS

              Tuesday

              - John Lackey, Angels, came within two outs of a no-hitter to lead Los Angeles past Boston 6-2. He gave up Dustin Pedroia's ninth-inning single followed by Kevin Youkilis' homer before finishing with a two-hitter.

              - Albert Pujols, Cardinals, hit a tying homer in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of St. Louis' 8-3 win over Atlanta.

              - Carlos Zambrano, Cubs, pitched eight shutout innings with a season-high nine strikeouts to help Chicago beat Ben Sheets and the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1.

              - Matt Garza, Rays, threw a five-hitter for his first major league shutout as Tampa Bay beat Roy Halladay for the third time in three games this season, 3-0.

              - Carlos Lee, Astros, hit his 12th career grand slam in Houston's 6-2 win over Cincinnati.

              HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER

The Los Angeles Angels have the best record in baseball. That didn't stop them from making a bold move two days before the trade deadline. With their sights set firmly on the World Series, the Angels pulled off a huge deal to acquire slugger Mark Teixeira from the fading Atlanta Braves. Los Angeles sent first baseman Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek to the Braves, who raised the white flag on this season after a rash of key injuries. Teixeira can become a free agent after the season.

              HIT MACHINE

Ichiro Suzuki reached 3,000 combined hits in the major leagues and the Japanese League with a first-inning single against the Texas Rangers. The Seattle Mariners leadoff man hit a soft liner to left-center on the game's first pitch from Luis Mendoza. Standing on first base, Suzuki received an ovation from the Texas crowd and tipped his helmet when his achievement was posted on the scoreboard. The 34-year-old outfielder has 1,722 hits in 1,224 games during eight seasons with the Mariners. He had 1,278 hits over 951 games in nine seasons with the Orix Blue Wave of Japan's Pacific League.

              INSPIRING STARTERS

Diamondbacks lefty Doug Davis retired his first 20 batters before Brian Giles' two-out single in the seventh inning ended his bid for a perfect game. Davis, who underwent surgery for cancer this season, combined with two relievers on a two-hitter in Arizona's 3-0 victory at San Diego. ... Jason Johnson tossed six sharp innings in his first major league start in nearly two years, pitching the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-0 victory over San Francisco. Johnson, who spent most of the season in Triple-A, allowed five hits while walking none and striking out three. The 34-year-old right-hander, who has pitched for eight big league teams starting in 1997, earned his first win since May 28, 2006, with Cleveland.

              BELTWAY GRIDLOCK

After falling 2-1 to Philadelphia, Washington has lost seven straight games - and the past 14 to be decided by one or two runs. The Nationals have scored a major league-low 389 runs, less than 3.7 per game, and have a total of three runs in their past five games.

              AT HOME IN THE BRONX

Baltimore's Daniel Cabrera pitched effectively into the eighth inning before being ejected from a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees for hitting Alex Rodriguez with a pitch. Cabrera improved to 3-0 with a 3.15 ERA in three starts against New York this year. He is 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA in eight games at Yankee Stadium, including 4-1 with a 2.86 ERA in his past five starts. "It's always good to pitch here,'' said Cabrera, who came within two outs of a no-hitter at Yankee Stadium in 2006. "This is one of the best ballparks ever.''

              READY TO RALLY

Justin Morneau's three-run double capped a five-run fifth inning that helped Minnesota rally from a four-run deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5. The Twins pulled within a half-game of Chicago, which has been atop the AL Central since May 17. ... Pittsburgh came back to beat Colorado for the second consecutive game, rallying for a 6-4 victory. The Pirates, who fell behind 3-0 on Monday before winning 8-4, fought back from a 4-0 deficit in the third inning.

              LUCKY 13

David Wright scored in his 13th consecutive game during the New York Mets' 4-1 win over Florida, breaking Carlos Beltran's team record set in 2006.

              STREAKING

Kansas City's Gil Meche (9-9) pitched seven strong innings with eight strikeouts for a 5-2 victory at Oakland. He is 6-1 with a 2.66 ERA in his past 10 starts. ... Aubrey Huff hit his second homer in two days and 22nd of the season for Baltimore in a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees. Huff tied a career high with four hits and is 17-for-34 in an eight-game hitting streak. He is batting .389 with 13 homers and 40 RBIs in his past 42 games.

              ONE-SIDED

Armando Galarraga (9-4) allowed three runs in 5 1-3 innings to get the win for Detroit in an 8-5 victory at Cleveland. He is 3-0 this season against the Indians. ... Baltimore's Kevin Millar is batting .362 (17-for-47) with six homers and nine RBIs against the Yankees this year. He has a .302 career average against New York with 21 homers and 55 RBIs in 378 at-bats.

              GOAT TO HERO

Ramon Vazquez made up for three errors with a two-run double off J.J. Putz in the ninth inning that gave Texas an 11-10 victory over Seattle. The Rangers, who wasted a seven-run lead after three innings, compensated for a season-high five errors with 18 hits.

              SPEAKING

"I wish I was strong enough to do that when I played. I had to use a water cooler.'' - Cubs manager Lou Piniella, after pitcher Carlos Zambrano popped out on an attempted bunt and broke his bat by slamming it over his knee in frustration.

              SEASONS

              July 30

1933 - Dizzy Dean struck out 17 Cubs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Chicago 8-2.

1947 - The New York Giants beat Ewell Blackwell and the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 in 10 innings, ending Blackwell's 16-game winning streak.

1959 - Willie McCovey had four hits in four at-bats in his major league debut, with the San Francisco Giants. His hits included two triples in a 7-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1968 - Washington shortstop Ron Hansen pulled off an unassisted triple play, but the Cleveland Indians still won the game 10-1.

1973 - Jim Bibby of the Texas Rangers pitched a 6-0 no-hitter against the Oakland A's.

1980 - Houston Astros pitcher J.R. Richard had a stroke during a workout at the Astrodome and underwent surgery to remove a blood clot behind his right collarbone.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves returned Chief Noc-A-Homa and his teepee to left field after losing 19 of 21 games and blowing a 10 1/2-game lead. The teepee was removed for more seats. The team recovered to regain first place.

1990 - George Steinbrenner was forced to resign as general partner of the New York Yankees by baseball commissioner Fay Vincent.

2003 - Chicago White Sox shortstop Jose Valentin hit three home runs by the fifth inning in a 15-4 win over Kansas City. It was the second three-homer game of his career, and the third time he has homered from both sides of the plate.

2005 - Jonny Gomes had the first three-homer game in Tampa Bay history in a 7-3 victory over Kansas City.

2006 - New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran tied a major league record with his third grand slam this month in a 9-6 victory over Atlanta. Beltran became the ninth player in major league history to hit three grand slams in a calendar month.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox [NESN | 7:05 ET]

Angels: Joe Saunders has yet to suffer a loss against the Red Sox in his career, going 3-0 in five starts with an impressive 2.87 ERA. Saunders was solid in his last start vs. Boston back on July 19th but walked away with a no-decision, allowing two runs and six hits in 6.2 innings of an eventual 4-2 victory. He has been especially tough on the road this season, going 7-3 in 10 starts with a 2.41 ERA.

Angels are 12-3 in their last 15 games as an underdog.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-170, O/U 8.5): Boston has not lost three straight games started by Josh Beckett since the 2006 season and will try to avoid that scenario happening again here against the Angels. Beckett actually pitched very well in his last meeting with LA on July 19th - until the seventh inning. He pitched six scoreless innings before the Angels struck for four runs in the seventh to rally from a 2-0 deficit and win 4-2. That was his first career loss vs. LA, and he is 5-2 in eight home starts with a 4.36 ERA.

Red Sox are 44-16 in their last 60 home games.
Red Sox are 0-7 in the last 6 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers[ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Cubs: The toughest Chicago pitcher against Brewers might very well be Ryan Dempster, who owns a 6-2 lifetime record against them to go along with a sparkling 2.53 ERA. Dempster's last road start at Houston on July 20th was also outstanding, as he pitched eight scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory. Surprisingly, that is his only road win of the season. He is 1-3 in nine starts away from home with a solid 3.42 ERA.

Cubs are 3-9 in their last 12 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Brewers (-115, O/U 8.5): Milwaukee's Manny Parra has been outstanding at home this season with a 5-1 mark and 3.15 ERA in 11 starts, but now he has the challenge of facing a strong left-handed hitting team that gave C.C. Sabathia trouble on Monday. Parra has seen the Brewers lose four of the last five games he has appeared in even though he has allowed more than three runs only once during that stretch. Three of those games were one-run losses.

Brewers are 25-12 in their last 37 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 8-3 in Milwaukee's last 11 home games.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins[8:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Gavin Floyd has struggled on the road this season with a 3-4 mark in nine starts and a 5.29 ERA, but his teammates rallied to win his last outing at Detroit on Friday. Jermaine Dye hit a 2-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to pull off a 6-5 victory after Floyd had allowed three earned runs and nine hits in six innings. He is 2-3 lifetime vs. Minnesota with a 4.13 ERA but earned both of the wins in the last two meetings, allowing just two earned runs in a combined 15.1 innings of work.

White Sox are 1-11 in their last 12 games in field turf.
The UNDER is 17-6 in Chicago's last 23 games on field turf.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Twins (-110, O/U 9.5): Livan Hernandez has earned 80% of his wins at home this season, going 8-1 there with a 3.91 ERA. However, Hernandez is just 1-1 in two career starts against the White Sox with a 5.54 ERA. He got bombed in a visit to Chicago back on June 7, surrendering seven runs and eight hits in four innings of an 11-2 loss. That was part of a six-start winless streak, and the Twins have not lost consecutive starts for Hernandez since June 12th.

Twins are 20-5 in their last 25 home games.
Twins are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings at Minnesota.

Key Injuries - OF Carlos Gomez (.250; back) has returned.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                      MLB

                      Wednesday, July 30

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      Streaking Starting Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Wednesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                      Streaking

Livan Hernandez, Minnesota Twins (10-7, 5.31 ERA)

Livan Hernandez isn't the first pitcher who comes to mind when you think of streaking hurlers. But when he's under the blinding white tarp of the Metrodome, he carries some incredible value.

Hernandez is 8-1 at home this season with a 3.91 ERA. Overall, the Twins are 10-2 in the righty's home outings and they've given him a pile of run support that has helped the over go 8-4 in those games.

Hernandez is 1-1 against the White Sox this season, but both starts were on the road.

Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins (0-0, 3.71 ERA)

Johnson only has three starts for the Fish this season, but they've won all of them. Even better for the bettor - the 24-year-old righty was an underdog in all three contests.

He tied a career high eight strikeouts in his most recent start, a 3-2 win over the Cubs over the weekend.

Johnson has returned to the Marlins after a year-long rehabilitation process following Tommy John surgery. Florida bettors should take note of this hurler before oddsmakers catch on and start raising his odds.

                      Slumping

Luis Mendoza, Texas Rangers (2-4, 7.16 ERA)

The line for this Mendoza is just going to keep growing if he continues to pitch like this. The Rangers have only won one of his four starts since earning his way out of the bullpen.

Overall, Texas is 3-7 in Mendoza's starts this year and he hasn't done much lately to suggest that record will be a winning one any time soon. The right-hander's ERA has swollen to 11.91 over his past three starts, allowing over bettors to reap the rewards in two of those games.

Mendoza hopes he can turn things around against the lowly Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Seattle vs. Texas (-180, 11 1/2)

This is the highest total on the MLB board for good reason today. The Rangers have scored at least five runs in their last five games while the M's have scored at least five in their last three.

The two pitchers climbing the mound tonight also have a combined ERA of higher than 17.00 over the past three games.

If you need more numbers, the Rangers have played over the total in their last seven outings.

                        Pick: over

                        Kansas City vs. Oakland (-135, 8 1/2)

The A's have lost 11 of their last 13 games to plummet them into the losing money category on the season in ***********'s money standings.

The reason for Oakland's struggles are obvious: hitting. The A's are the worst hitting club since the All-Star break with a lowly .219 average. Most recently, the first two games of their series with Kansas City have fallen under the slight totals of 7 1/2 , set for both games.

Oakland reached a moment of ugliness Tuesday night when it struck out 12 times. Rookie right-hander Sean Gallagher tries to turn it around for Oakland tonight. He's been solid since getting traded from the Cubs in the Rich Harden deal with just five earned runs against in 17 1/3 innings.

                        Pick: under

                        Arizona vs. San Diego (+120, 6 1/2)

Danny Haren has been about as rock-solid as a pitcher can get lately. Haren has allowed more than two runs only once in his last 10 starts (he gave up three in that game) and he pitched at least seven innings in all but one of those games. He has a 1.17 ERA and Arizona has three wins in his three starts.

The total of 6 1/2 runs pretty much says it all about Haren's performance. Petco Park is pitcher-friendly, sure, but this is one of the lowest totals of the season.

Arizona is 7-3 in its last 10 games and the best part for their bettors is the D-backs haven't seen a line of higher than -139 in that time.

                        Pick: D-backs

Angels are 8-2 in their last 10 games following a win.

                              Key Injuries - NONE

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-180, O/U 8.5): Boston has not lost three straight games started by Josh Beckett since the 2006 season and will try to avoid that scenario happening again here against the Angels.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

The OVER is 6-2 in Chicago's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Twins (-115, O/U 9.5): Livan Hernandez has earned 80% of his wins at home this season, going 8-1 there with a 3.91 ERA.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3
