    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, July 29

The midwest remains in the sporting spotlight on Tuesday, as Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs play in Wisconsin against Ben Sheets and the rival Milwaukee Brewers.

Zambrano and Sheets have been in the shadows of their teams' marquee acquisitions over the past few weeks; the Cubs brought in Rich Harden, and the Brewers added CC Sabathia. However, as their records can attest (Zambrano is 11-4 with a 2.96 ERA, Sheets is 10-3 with a 2.87 ERA) each of the two hurlers have retained their ace status.

Zambrano is 3-1 over his past four starts, losing only to the Astros back on July 19 (allowing four earned runs on six hits over 6 1-3 innings). The righthander handily topped the Marlins in his most recent outing, holding them to two earned runs on six hits over his seven innings of work. Zambrano has faced the Brewers twice this season, pitching well both times (one earned run in 13 innings) but settling for two no-decisions.

The Brewers are 7-3 in Sheets' past 10 starts, although the righthander has been stuck with a no-decision each of his last two outings. Sheets surrendered more than three earned runs just once over that period, getting knocked around by the Twins in an interleague start on June 29. The Brewers' ace has faced the Cubs twice so far this year, earning a win on April 29 and getting a no-decision in a strong start on March 31.

While the Cubs and Brewers are battling for NL Central supremacy on Tuesday night the Mets and the Marlins will be jockeying for position in the tight NL East. Scott Olsen (6-5, 4.07 ERA) will get the ball for Florida at home in that contest, and New York will counter with Oliver Perez (6-6, 4.15 ERA). Olsen gave up six earned runs in a start against the Cubs last time out, while Perez is coming off a quality start against Philly.

Those Phillies will be in Washington on Tuesday night, giving Brett Myers (3-9, 5.82 ERA) another chance to prove be belongs with the big club. The Cardinals, meanwhile, will be looking to keep pace with the Cubs and Brewers in the Central when they play in Atlanta. Todd Wellemeyer (8-4, 4.19 ERA) will be looking to get the victory for St. Louis.

Other games around the NL on Tuesday: Colorado at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati at Houston, Arizona at San Diego, and Matt Cain (6-8, 3.82 ERA) and San Francisco at the Dodgers.

Los Angeles' other team, the Angels, will be in Boston again on Tuesday night to play the Red Sox. John Lackey (8-2, 3.02 ERA) will take to the mound for Los Angeles, while Clay Buchholz (2-5, 5.81 ERA) goes for Boston. The Angels are 9-1 over Lackey's last 10 starts, while Buchholz is 0-3 with two no-decisions in his last five outings for Boston.

The Yankees host Baltimore on Tuesday, while Tampa Bay is still in Toronto to take on the Blue Jays and ace Roy Halladay (12-7, 2.82 ERA). In other AL action on Tuesday it's Detroit at Cleveland, Seattle at Texas, the ChiSox at Minnesota, and KC at Oakland.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- High drama in Milwaukee Monday, where Derrek Lee hit a game-winning double in 9th inning as Cubs beat Milwaukee 6-4 in a see-saw game before 45,311 fans at Miller Park, 6.9% over the listed capacity.

-- More drama in Florida, where Marlins scored five in their half of 8th inning, beating Mets 7-3. Mets also lost Maine in fifth inning with stiffness in his right shoulder.

-- All three contenders in AL East lost, as we await leaders of the Tampa franchise to pull off a trade to invigorate the team, which is in a major offensive tailspin.

-- Greg Maddux won his first game in his last fifteen starts on Monday; would a contender take a chance, trade for him?

-- Oakland's Brad Ziegler broke a 101-year old record Sunday when he recorded his 27th consecutive scoreless inning to start off his major league career.

-- Buddy of mine was at wedding this weekend; bride falls at the reception and ruptures a tendon in her wrist, requiring an emergency operation on her wedding night. Not good.

Tuesday's List of 13: Ranking the National League teams

        16) Nationals-- Lost last six games, scored total of two runs in their last four games. Their starting pitching isn't terrible. Most everything else about this team is, other than the manager, 3B.

        15) Pirates-- Yet another tank job for team that last had season over .500 in 1992. Helping the fatcat Bronx Bombers was nuts.

        14) Giants-- Just a terrible team, other than their young starting pitchers. Like Fred Lewis out in leftfield, too. Lincecum has an average of 103 PT/start over last ten starts (116-121-111 last 3)

        13) Braves-- Lot of injured guys; will they trade Mark Teixeira at trade deadline, just like they acquired him last year? Really in rebuilding mode, or at least they should be.

        12) Astros-- When is last time they came up with good young player out of their farm system? OK, Hunter Pence. This team hasn;t been the same since they canned GM Hunsicker.

        11) Padres-- Get Chris Young back from facial fractures in time for Tuesday's game; they're starting to play little better, but no way are they contenders this season.

        10) Reds-- Will they trade Adam Dunn this week? Griffey? The young starters are an improvement. and Bruce/Votto provide a couple of solid young hitters. There is hope in Cincinnati.

        9) Rockies-- Holliday isn't a free agent until after 2009; they are stupid if they dump him now. Financial reality may force trade next summer, but for now, they're still contenders in weak west.

        8) Dodgers-- Finally did something and got Casey Blake, then Garciaparra got hurt (again). Its possible NL West winner will finish season under .500, which would be just terrific.

        7) Cardinals-- When Friday night's starting pitcher pitches in relief on Sunday, you know things are bad. They've gotten lot out of this team, but you wonder how much is left.

        6) Diamondbacks-- Young team has good record against rest of putrid division, but is awful against others. Randy Johnson has won his last four starts, as he gets closer to 300 wins.

        5) Marlins-- Monday night, Met TV announcers stressed over and over how deficient Marlins are, but at end of night, they had beaten Mets 7-3 and are right behind them in NL East race.

        4) Phillies-- Good news: They rallied from 9-2/5-0 deficits and won last two games. Bad news: Last time one of their starting pitchers won a game was ten days ago. Look to be sliding.

        3) Brewers-- Their defense is awful, but their Big 3 starters on the mound (Sabathia-Sheets-Parra) are very good. CC threw 124 pitches Monday; Brewers are getting their money's worth.

        2) Mets-- American League-style team; they're 11-4 in the last 15 games that went over the total; they're 20-26 this season if the game stays under.

        1) Cubs-- Most weapons of any NL team; if they ever get all 25 guys healthy at same time, they should pull away in Central, leaving Brewers behind to scrap for Wild Card spot.

          SCOREBOARD

          Tuesday, July 29

Chicago at Milwaukee (10:05 p.m. EDT). Carlos Zambrano (11-4, 2.96 ERA) matches up with Ben Sheets (10-3, 2.87) in the second game of a four-game series between teams battling for the NL Central lead.

          STARS

          Monday

          - Adam Jones, Orioles, hit a grand slam and an RBI triple in a 13-4 victory over New York that ended the Yankees' 10-game home winning streak.

          - A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays, struck out 10 and allowed an unearned run in seven innings in a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay.

          - Joe Mather, Cardinals, went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double to help St. Louis rout Atlanta 12-3.

          - Adrian Beltre, Mariners, hit two home runs and drove in four runs in a 7-5 win over Texas.

          - Kevin Slowey, Twins, pitched a six-hitter, his second shutout of the season, in a 7-0 win over Chicago that pulled Minnesota within 1 1/2 games of the White Sox.

          SPLASH!

Pittsburgh's Nate McLouth hit a 448-foot home run off Colorado reliever Luis Vizcaino that bounced into the Allegheny River in the Pirates' 8-4 win over the Rockies. McLouth's home run was the 23rd to land in the river in PNC Park's eight-year history.

          SAVIOR

Francisco Rodriguez of the Angels got his major league best 44th save in 47 chances in Los Angeles' 7-5 win over Boston despite allowing a home run to Manny Ramirez. With more than two months left in the season, Rodriguez is just 13 saves shy of Bobby Thigpen's record of 57 with the White Sox in 1990. No other player this season has more than 30 saves.

          MAD DOG MILESTONE

Greg Maddux moved past Hall of Famer Phil Niekro and took sole possession of 10th place on baseball's career strikeout list in San Diego's 8-5 win over Arizona. The Padres' right-hander struck out Arizona's Mark Reynolds in the second inning to tie Niekro with 3,342, then moved past him in the third when he struck out Conor Jackson. The 42-year-old Maddux also snapped a career-high, 14-start winless streak.

          KINGS OF PAIN

Tim Hudson has ligament damage in his pitching elbow, the latest in a series of devastating injuries to the Atlanta Braves's pitching staff. The right-handed Hudson went on the disabled list after an MRI found the damage. The Braves also placed slugger Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury, yet another blow for a team that just a few days ago had still hoped to contend in the NL East.

          AILING

Mets pitcher John Maine left the game Monday night at Florida after 4 1-3 innings because of stiffness in his right shoulder, and he'll return to New York for tests. The right-hander took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, but when he fell behind leadoff batter John Baker 2-0, the trainer and manager Jerry Manuel went to the mound. Maine stayed in the game, and Baker homered on the next pitch. After Maine retired the next batter, Manuel removed him. Maine allowed four hits, struck out six and walked one. It's uncertain whether he'll miss any starts.

          SUSPENDED

Chicago Cubs first base coach Matt Sinatro was suspended for two games after making contact with an umpire during a weekend dispute. Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Monday night that special assistant Ivan DeJesus would take over for Sinatro at first. The suspension took effect Monday night when the Cubs started a series at Milwaukee for the NL Central lead. Sinatro and Piniella were fined undisclosed amounts by Major League Baseball vice president Bob Watson. After the Cubs' Mark DeRosa was called out at first base in the ninth inning Saturday at Wrigley Field, Sinatro argued and made contact with umpire Rob Drake. Sinatro was ejected, as was Piniella.

          SEASON OVER

Yankees catcher Jorge Posada will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, ending his attempt to return to the lineup for New York's postseason push. The five-time All-Star has struggled with shoulder pain most of the season, weakening his throws and limiting his playing time behind the plate. On the disabled list for the second time this year, Posada was trying to rehabilitate his shoulder enough to come back as a DH or first baseman this season. But after the Yankees acquired outfielder Xavier Nady in a trade with Pittsburgh on Saturday, they determined it was best for Posada to have surgery now, general manager Brian Cashman said Monday. Posada is expected to be sidelined at least six months.

          SPEAKING

"The reality of the way things have gone recently and the number of injuries we're battling, I think it paints a pretty clear picture of what we should do and what we need to do. We're in a position of great strength because we have the best player. We have some of the best assets out there that people want.'' - Braves GM Frank Wren about the team possibly trading 1B Mark Teixeira after the team put Tim Hudson and Chipper Jones on the disabled list.

          SEASONS

1983 - Steve Garvey of the San Diego Padres ended his NL record of 1,207 consecutive games. The streak ended when he dislocated his thumb in a collision with Atlanta pitcher Pascual Perez while trying to score.

2000 - Eddie Taubensee hit a game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth and homered again in the 11th to lead Cincinnati to a 4-3 win over Montreal.

2001 - Craig Monroe homered in his first major league at-bat as the Texas Rangers beat Tampa Bay 2-0.

2003 - Boston's Bill Mueller became the first player in major league history to hit grand slams from both sides of the plate in a game and connected for three homers in a 14-7 win at Texas.

2006 - Tomas Perez tied a major league record with four doubles, going 5-for-5 and leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 19-6 rout of the New York Yankees.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                MLB

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Tuesday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays (12-7, 2.82 ERA)

The Blue Jays ace has pitched 33 complete games since the 2003 season, an incredible stat when you consider there are only eight other active major-league pitchers who have pitched that many in their careers.

No wonder the guy is getting frustrated with his Toronto teammates while his club hovers around the .500 mark yet again this year. Halladay continues to be his incredible self with a 6-2 record over his last 10 starts and he's managed to strike out at least two innings worth of batters in eight of those outings.

Tampa Bay has managed to win two games with Halladay on the mound this season, so you know the Doc will be looking for some payback on Tuesday.

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (6-8, 3.82 ERA)

Pitching well for the Giants is a frustrating experience this season. Cain can tell you all about it after pitching four great games in his last five starts with only a pair of wins to show for it.

The right-hander carries a 1.23 ERA over his last three starts, but in order to get a win during that stretch, he had to pitch nine innings of shutout ball - and San Fran still only beat the Nationals 1-0 in that game last Thursday.

Cain has given up zero earned runs in three of his past five starts while tossing at least seven innings in each of those. Unfortunately, he's only received one lowly run of support in his three most recent trips to the bump.

                Slumping

Brett Myers, Philadelphia Phillies (3-9, 5.82 ERA)

Few pitchers have lost as much money as Myers recently. Philly has dropped 12 of his last 13 starts including a stretch of six straight losses heading into Tuesday.

As if that's not bad enough, Myers is on the road against the Nats on Tuesday. He is far worse on the road (0-6, 7.91 ERA) than at home this season (3-3, 3.81 ERA).

Look for a possible play on the over in this matchup with Washington sending a struggling pitcher of its own, Colin Balester, to the hill.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets

Angels vs. Red Sox (-110, 9)

According to a story in the Daily News today, Angels pitchers John Lackey is going through a “dead arm” phase of the season.

It happens to a lot of players, in a lot of positions and it usually means a slump of some kind. For Lackey – who says the phase usually happens to him after about 100 innings of work – the slump means a 2-1 record and bloated 7.61 ERA over his past four starts.

That comes after a 6-1, 1.44-ERA start to the season in his first nine outings. That was almost an impossible pace, but Lackey hopes to get back to those numbers with a few adjustments tonight, but he isn't telling reporters what those adjustments are. Getting back to form might be difficult against the Red Sox and their 37-14 home record, though.

                      Pick: Red Sox

                      Cincinnati vs. Houston (-110, 9 1/2)

A quick look at the matchup page for this game shows you that the Phillies have lost seven straight games to the Astros dating back to last year.

Nobody likes to lose seven in a row to anybody, but it looks like it could be eight tonight because of an emotionally lifted Houston team. The ‘Stros got their ace back last night, Roy Oswalt, and the clubhouse was all smiles after a 5-4 win over Cincy.

Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. But Adam Dunn pounded a grand slam in the third to take the lead and the win looked in doubt. Fortunately, Houston fought back for the win and the psychological lift of Oswalt became obvious.

Look for the Astros to go on a winning stretch in their coming games following a four-game losing streak last week.

                      Pick: Astros

                      Colorado vs. Pittsburgh (+115, 10)

The Rockies are scoring lots of runs lately. The Pirates are also scoring a lot of runs lately.

Add a pair of pitchers with a combined ERA of more than 15.00 and you have yourself a play.

                      Pick: over

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox [NESN | 7:05 ET]

Angels: It's usually good news for the Angels when John Lackey takes the mound. LA is 9-1 in his last 10 starts. While the Angels have had success when Lackey pitches, his last four outings haven't been very impressive. He's allowed 36 hits and 21 runs in his last 23.2 innings of work, although LA is 3-1 thanks to an offense that's red hot. Lackey has been strong on the road this season but that could end tonight against a Red Sox team he's only 2-6 with a 6.01 ERA against in his career. Lackey's last four starts have all easily gone OVER the total.

Angels are 11-3 in their last 14 games as an underdog.
Angels are 2-11 in Lackey's last 13 starts vs. Boston.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-120, O/U 9): Clay Buchholz won his first game since May 7 in his last start against the Mariners. Buchholz only lasted 5.1 innings but got the win after allowing three runs and striking out seven. Buchholz faced the Angels on July 18 and took the loss after getting blasted for eight hits and four runs over four innings. He's pitched much better at home this season, going 2-1 with a strong 2.42 ERA. The OVER is 7-2-1 in Buchholz's last 10 starts.

Red Sox are 44-15 in their last 59 home games.
Red Sox are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers [WGN | 8:05 PM ET]

Cubs: Carlos Zambrano gets the call tonight and the Cubs ace has pitched extremely well in three of his last four starts. Zambrano bounced back from a subpar performance against the Astros by pitching seven strong innings versus Florida, allowing just two runs. Big Z is an average 9-8 in 21 career starts against the Brewers, although he does posses a solid 3.87 ERA in those games. The UNDER is 4-2 in Zambrano's last six outings.

Cubs are 2-9 in their last 11 games as an underdog.
The UNDER is 16-5-1 in Zambrano's last 22 road starts.

Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Brewers (-125, O/U 7.5): Ben Sheets hasn't been his dominating self in his last three starts. Sheets hasn't recorded a win in his last three outings and has allowed 10 runs in 18 innings of work. However, two of those games were on the road. Tonight Sheets returns home, where he's 4-2 with an impressive 2.96 ERA on the season. Sheets has been in many battles with the Cubbies over his career, going 10-7 with an ERA of 3.76 in 24 starts. The OVER has cashed three of the last four times Sheets has taken the mound.

Brewers are 25-11 in their last 36 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 8-2 in Milwaukee's last 10 home games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins [8:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Clayton Richard is making his second career start for the White Sox tonight but the Chicago faithful are hoping it goes a lot better than his first. Even though the White Sox won the game, Richard was pulled in the fourth inning after allowing seven hits and five runs. On the bright side, Richard struck out seven, while walking only one. This will be Richard's first career start on the road.

White Sox are 1-10 in their last 11 games in field turf.
The UNDER is 17-5 in Chicago's last 22 games on field turf.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Twins (-130, O/U 9.5): Glen Perkins lost his first game in six starts his last time out against the Yankees. In that game, Perkins was touched up for eight hits and five runs in just six innings of work. Perkins faced the Sox earlier this season but took a no-decision, allowing three runs over 5.1 innings. After pitching six straight OVERS, the UNDER has cashed in Perkins' last five appearances.

Twins are 19-5 in their last 24 home games.
Twins are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings at Minnesota.

Key Injuries - OF Carlos Gomez (.250; back) is expected to return.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: After pitching well earlier in the year, the Diamondbacks have now lost Doug Davis' last four starts. Over that span, he's allowed 15 runs over 24 innings. Davis' luck could change tonight against San Diego. He's 6-3 with a solid 3.36 ERA in his career versus the Padres. Control has been a problem for Davis of late. He's walked at least four batters four times in his last 10 starts. The OVER is 3-0 in Davis' last three starts.

The OVER is 7-2-1 in Davis' last 10 road starts.
The OVER is 8-0 in Arizona's last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - OF Justin Upton (.242; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Padres (-130, O/U 7.5): Chris Young is making his first start since May 21 after serving time on the DL because of a broken nose. Before he was shelved, Young won two of three starts, although he allowed eight runs in just 14.1 innings of work. Young hasn't had much luck against Arizona. He's just 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA in seven starts against the Diamondbacks. Young has been solid at Petco Park this year, sporting a 2.57 ERA.

Padres are 3-12 in their last 15 home games.
The OVER is 7-3-1 in San Diego's last 11 games overall.
