    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, July 28

Monday is usually a light day on the MLB schedule, but not this week as 28 of the league's 30 teams are in action. And the day's top matchup will take place in Milwaukee.

CC Sabathia (4-0, 1.36 ERA in the National League) will get the ball for the Brewers on Monday night, and he'll go up against the Cubs' Ted Lilly (10-6, 4.49 ERA). Sabathia continued to dominate Senior Circuit hitters in his last outing, tossing a complete-game shutout and giving up just three hits (while fanning seven) in a win versus the Cardinals.

That performance ran the lefthander's record to 4-0 as a member of the Brewers, and it marked his third consecutive complete game (he lasted a mere six innings in his Milwaukee debut back on July 8). Overall Sabathia has given up just five earned runs over 33 innings pitched since the big trade, and he's managed to strike out 31 batters.

Lilly hasn't been as dominant, but he is coming off a win over the Diamondbacks on July 23. The lefthander gave up three earned runs on six hits over six innings in that contest, fanning six. Chicago had lost in each of Lilly's previous three starts, but they're still 6-4 over his last 10 trips to the mound. Lilly is 5-2 with three no-decisions in that time frame.

The other NL Central contender, the Cardinals, will be on the road facing the Braves on Monday night. Braden Looper (9-8, 4.49 ERA) will get the start for St. Louis in that contest, and he'll take on Atlanta's Jo-Jo Reyes (3-9, 4.95 ERA). The big Cardinals news over the weekend, however, was the report that Chris Carpenter returns this week.

Other NL games on tap for Monday include Colorado at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Florida, Cincinnati at Houston, and San Francisco at the Dodgers. As well, Greg Maddux (3-8, 4.18 ERA) will be looking to pitch the lowly Padres past the division-rival Diamondbacks.

The marquee game in the American League on Monday night will take place at Fenway Park, as the Red Sox play host to the Angels. Daisuke Matsuzaka (11-1, 2.63 ERA) will be on the mound for Boston, and Los Angeles will counter with Jered Weaver (8-8, 4.08 ERA). Dice-K has surrendered just three earned runs over his last 30 2-3 innings, while Weaver had to leave after just three innings in his July 22 outing because of a sore back.

The Yankees will get a visit from the Orioles on Monday night, while the Rays will play a road game in Toronto. A.J. Burnett (11-9, 4.73 ERA) is the probable starter for the Blue Jays in that matchup, although his name is still coming up in the league's trade rumors.

Other AL games on Monday include Detroit at Cleveland, Seattle at Texas, and Kansas City at Oakland, while the Twins and White Sox clash in a key divisional battle in Minnesota. Chicago is expected to send Mark Buehrle (8-8, 3.56 ERA) to the mound in that contest, while Minny will be looking for a victory from Kevin Slowey (6-7, 4.41 ERA).

All of the other leagues are off on Monday. The Arena Football League wrapped up its season on Sunday, and the WNBA will return from its lengthy Olympic break on August 28. The next week of Canadian Football League action begins on Thursday, and both the Sprint Cup Series and the Formula One circuit will return for races on the weekend.

      Six-pack for Monday

      Wrapping up a sports Sunday........

-- One of the greens at the Canadian Open looked like it was under a highway overpass; never saw anything like that.

-- Rockies swept Reds in Cincinnati, outscoring them 23-3.

-- Randy Johnson won his fourth start in row as Arizona got healthier sweeping the Giants in San Francisco.

-- Tampa Bay backup catcher Shawn Riggans never got a hit in high school; he was 0-10 in two years as a backup catcher, but persevered and made it to the big leagues.

-- Seattle's Washburn raised his trade value, beating Toronto at Rogers Centre. Suddenly, he's a fairly hot commodity.

-- Four months down, two to go; Rays are still in first place.

Monday's List of 13: Questions as NFL training camps open

        13) Will the Super Bowl hangover hit Foxboro? Their starting RT got arrested on a drug charge; if he is suspended, can they find a competent replacement?

        12) Can the Browns withstand expectations? They have five of their games in primetime this season-- networks expect them to be a good club, but a QB controversy is distinct possibility.

        11) Can Tennessee's new offensive coordinator Heimerdinger improve Vince Young's play in red zone? New TE Crumpler is expected to help there. They'll have two new guards on OL.

        10) Now that Jay Cutler knows he is a diabetic, will his play get any better? Broncos haven't been to the Super Bowl since QB named Elway retired. Mike Holmgren got back to Super Bowl without Brett Favre; can Shanahan do it without Elway?

        9) Can Steelers protect Roethlisberger, who has been sacked 93 times the last two seasons? They lost Alan Faneca, so that is a problem. Rumors of the team's sale could be a distraction.

        8) How bad is Peyton Manning's knee? Any other question in Colts' camp pales by comparison to that one.

        7) Is 28-year old Kyle Shanahan up to being a play-caller in the NFL? Will Alex Gibbs' OL give whichever QB plays enough of a pocket to make the Texans' offense balanced?

        6) Just how bad are the Chiefs? Three new starters on the line, Brodie Croyle at QB (he didn't win a game last year). No one is saying Herm Edwards is Vince Lombardi, but does he have to do a Les Steckel imitation?

        5) Jets' offensive line should be better, but who will the QB be? Clemens? Pennington? Favre? Since Pennington reminds me of Pat Haden, I'd go for just about anybody other than him.

        4) How much better will Miami be this year? After a 1-15 mess last season, it has to get better, but how much better? Trading Jason Taylor may pay off down the road, but not in 2008.

        3) Can Jacksonville overtake the Colts in AFC South? Rumors of a move to LA persist. Winning would help sell tickets.

        2) Raiders have ton of questions: Can JaMarcus Russell play? Will McFadden be as explosive in the pros? Can their defense stop anyone? Can Kiffen last the whole season as the coach?

        1) Can Norv Turner get Chargers to the Super Bowl? Season is going to be a disappointment for San Diego unless he does.

          SCOREBOARD

          Monday, July 28

Arizona at San Diego (10:05 p.m. EDT). Greg Maddux, winner of 350 career games, hasn't won since May 10, a stretch of 14 starts.

          STARS

          Sunday

-Johan Santana, Mets, pitched a six-hitter in New York's 9-1 rout of St. Louis. It was the first NL complete game for Santana, who also had two hits and an RBI.

-Geoff Blum, Astros, hit two home runs off Jeff Suppan in Houston's 11-6 victory over Milwaukee.

-Jake Peavy, Padres, struck out 10 in seven strong innings and San Diego beat Pittsburgh 3-1. -Billy Butler, Royals, homered and drove in four runs in Kansas City's 6-1 win over Tampa Bay. -Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs and Chicago rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Florida, 9-6.

-Manny Ramirez, Red Sox, went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs to help Boston end the Yankees' eight-game winning streak, 9-2.

          ROCKTOBER IN JULY

When the Colorado Rockies fell 19 games under .500 at the end of June, it appeared the defending NL Champions were done. Not so fast: the team best known for an astounding 21-1 stretch run that led it into the World Series against Boston last year seems to be up to something again. With their 11-0 win over Cincinnati, the Rockies improved to 9-1 after the All-Star break. They outscored the Reds 23-3 in a three-game sweep over the weekend, and have averaged 7.6 runs an nearly 14 hits during the 10-game stretch.

          SNAPPED

For the first time since the All-Star break, the New York Yankees lost. The Boston Red Sox slavaged the final game of a three-game set with their AL East rivals with a 9-2 victory, behind the hitting of Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz and the pitching of Jon Lester. The Yankees had won eight straight games, a season high.

          SUNDAY, SUNDAY

The Baltimore Orioles ended their run of 15 straight losses in Sunday games, defeating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2. It was Baltimore's first win on Sunday since April 6 against Seattle. Since that game, the Orioles were outscored by a combined 83-43 in compiling the longest skid on one day of the week since Arizona dropped 15 successive Saturday games in 2004.

          OUCH!

Atlanta Braves All-Star catcher Brian McCann left the game against the Phillies after Shane Victorino ran him over in the sixth inning. It appeared Victorino collided into McCann helmet to mask. McCann stayed down for a couple minutes, before walking off the field on his own. There was no immediate word on McCann's injury.

          ZIEGLER'S FOLLY

Athletics reliever Brad Ziegler recorded six outs to set a major league record with 27 scoreless innings to begin his career. The 28-year-old right-hander, who began the season in the minors before being promoted to Oakland on May 30, gave up two singles in two innings against Texas but was otherwise flawless. Ziegler broke the previous mark of 25 innings set by Philadelphia Phillies right-hander George McQuillan in 1907. Ziegler's scoreless streak also is the third-longest by an Oakland reliever.

          WHAT DISTRACTION?

Jarrod Washburn, the subject of trade rumors and reportedly on the Yankees' radar, shook off the speculation to win for the first time in four starts in Seattle's 5-1 win over Toronto. He gave up one run and four hits in eight innings. Washburn has allowed more than two earned runs just once in his past nine starts, lowering his ERA to 4.50.

          BULLPEN BLOWUP

Before Detroit's 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that Fernando Rodney would replace Todd Jones as the team's closer. Then, oft-injured set-up man Joel Zumaya left the game in the eighth inning with tightness in his right triceps. Rodney, who has one career save, got the final five outs of the game, giving up one run, one hit and walked two batters. He struck out the side in the ninth, but went to a full count on all three hitters. Jones is the Tigers' all-time saves leader with 235. Leyland said Jones' pitch quality and location wasn't where it needed to be.

          SLOW UNIT

Randy Johnson, the second-most prolific strikeout pitcher of all-time, threw a pitch so slow to Fred Lewis in the first inning - for a strike - that the radar gun was unable to register its speed. The 44-year-old tossed seven shutout innings to win his fourth straight start and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed their first sweep in San Francisco in seven years, beating the Giants 7-2. Johnson recorded career win No. 292 and extended his scoreless inning streak to 15, his longest since 19 straight in September 2002.

          SOMETHING HAD TO GIVE

In a matchup of pitchers who were winless in their previous 20 starts combined, Clayton Kershaw pitched six-plus innings to record his first victory in 10 major league starts, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals 2-0. Jason Bergman allowed two runs and six hits over six innings for the loss. The right-hander is 0-7 with a 3.24 ERA in 12 starts since beating the New York Mets 7-0 on May 15 at Shea Stadium with seven innings of three-hit ball.

          SPEAKING

"We're not trying to recreate anything. We're just trying to play well day-to-day. Last year, we figured out a way to score one more run than our opponents. Right now, we're finding ways to barrel up some balls. Our offense has been good from the bottom all the way to the top.'' - Rockies manager Clint Hurdle after Colorado won for the ninth time in 10 games, routed Cincinnati 11-0.

          SEASONS

          July 28

1931 - Bob Fothergill of Chicago hit a home run and a triple in an 11-run eighth inning. The White Sox set an American League record by recording 12 hits in the inning and beat the New York Yankees 14-12.

1940 - King Kong Keller hit three homers to give the New York Yankees a 10-9 win over Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader split.

1951 - Clyde Vollmer of Boston hit a grand slam in the 16th inning, the latest ever hit in a major league game. The Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians, 8-4, in 16.

1958 - For the sixth time in his career, Mickey Mantle hit home runs from both sides of the plate. New York beat the Athletics 14-7.

1971 - Sixteen-time Gold Glove winner Brooks Robinson committed three errors in the sixth inning against the Oakland A's. Frank Robinson's three-run homer in the ninth won the game for the Orioles.

1976 - John Odom (five innings) and Francisco Barrios (four innings) combined on a no-hitter as the Chicago White Sox beat Oakland 2-1.

1979 - Dave Kingman of the Chicago Cubs hit three home runs in a game for the second time in the season and became the sixth player in major league history to accomplish the feat. Kingman's homers weren't enough as the Cubs lost to the New York Mets 6-4.

1983 - AL president Lee McPhail ruled that George Brett's "pine tar'' home run against New York on July 24 should count. The umpires had disallowed the homer because the pine tar on Brett's bat exceeded the 18-inch limit. The rest of the game was played Aug. 18 with the Kansas City Royals beating the Yankees, 5-4.

1990 - Shawon Dunston tied a major league record with three triples and led the Chicago Cubs to a 10-7 win over the Montreal Expos.

1991 - Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game and the Montreal Expos beat Los Angeles 2-0 at Dodger Stadium.

1993 - Ken Griffey Jr. tied a major league record by homering in his eighth consecutive game, but it wasn't enough for the Seattle Mariners in a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

1994 - On the night the baseball players set an Aug. 12 strike date, Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers pitched a perfect game for a 4-0 victory over California.

1999 - For the first in 12 years, the U.S. baseball team beat the world champion Cubans, scoring five runs in the ninth inning for a 10-5 victory at the Pan American Games. Marcus Jensen's three-run homer broke a 5-5 tie.

2001 - Vinny Castilla hit three homers and drove in five runs, but Houston still lost 9-8 to Pittsburgh. Down 8-2 with two outs in the ninth inning, the Pirates scored seven runs, including Brian Giles' game-winning grand slam.

2004 - Troy Percival recorded his 300th save after John Lackey allowed three hits over 8 1-3 innings to help Anaheim beat Texas 2-0.

2006 - Houston rookie Luke Scott hit for the cycle and drove in five runs, but the Astros lost to Arizona 8-7.

          Today's birthday: Wilson Betemit 28.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox [ESPN | 7:05 ET]

Angels: Jered Weaver has pitched well over the last month, allowing two runs or less in all of his five starts over that stretch. Because of minimal run support, Weaver has compiled a 2-1 record with two no-decisions in those five starts. In his last outing against Boston, Weaver took the loss after being touched up for 10 hits and five runs over five innings. On the road this season, he's 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA. The UNDER is 3-1-1 in Weaver's last five starts.

Angels are 10-3 in their last 13 games as an underdog.
Angels are 8-21 in the last 29 meetings at Boston.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-150, O/U 9): Daisuke Matsuzaka has been close to untouchable over his last five starts, allowing just three runs in 30.2 innings of work. Dice-K's dominance isn't anything new, however. In 17 starts this season, Matsuzaka has allowed two runs or less a remarkable 12 times. The Red Sox are a stellar 10-2 in those games and 14-3 overall this season when Dice-K takes the hill. The UNDER is 7-3 in Matsuzaka's last 10 starts.

Red Sox are 41-13 in their last 54 home games.
The UNDER is 23-9-3 in Boston's last 35 Monday games.

Key Injuries - SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Mets at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]

Mets (-120, O/U 9): John Maine pitched seven innings against the Phillies his last time out, getting the win after allowing just three runs. However, the seven innings has been an aberration. In his four prior starts, Maine didn't get out of the fourth inning three times. Maine's short outings mean you can expect a lot of work from the Mets bullpen tonight. Even though he's been inconsistent, the Mets are 5-2 in Maine's last seven starts.

Mets are 15-4 in their last 19 games overall.
Mets are 12-2 in the last 14 meetings at Florida.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Marlins: Ricky Nolasco has lost two straight games, with both defeats coming at home. In those two losses, Nolasco has allowed 15 hits and nine runs in only12 innings of work. Nolasco is just 4-4 at home this season, compared to 6-2 on the road. Before his recent two-game losing streak, Nolasco had allowed three runs or less in his seven prior starts, going 5-0 with two no-decisions. The Marlins won all seven of those games. The UNDER is 5-1 the last six times Nolasco has taken the mound.

Marlins are 8-3 in their last 11 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 22-7-1 in the last 30 meetings at Florida.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Cubs: Ted Lilly takes the ball for the Cubs tonight in Game 1 of this important series with the Brewers. Lilly has been pitching pretty well for Chicago, allowing three runs or less eight times in his last 10 starts. Lilly's first start of the season was against the Brewers but he only lasted 4.2 innings after giving up five hits and four runs. Lilly is 5-3 at home and on the road this season, but his ERA drops from 5.34 to 3.84 away from Wrigley Field.

Cubs are 1-9 in their last 10 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Brewers (-175, O/U 7.5): C.C. Sabathia has been a monster since coming over from Cleveland to Milwaukee. In four starts with the Brewers, Sabathia has pitched three complete games and has only allowed five runs over 33 innings, while striking out 31. In other words, complete and utter dominance. Overall, the Brewers and Indians are a combined 8-2 in Sabathia's last 10 starts.

Brewers are 25-9 in their last 34 games as a favorite.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins [8:10 PM ET]

White Sox (-110, O/U 8.5): Mark Buehrle has been sharp in his last 10 starts, allowing two runs or less an impressive seven times. During that stretch, Buehrle is 6-2 with two no-decisions. After a brief two-game losing streak, Buehrle has bounced back by winning his last two starts over Texas and Kansas City. However, those games were at home. Tonight Buehrle takes to the road where he's 1-3 in his last four starts. Buehrle's last four appearances on the road have gone UNDER the total.

White Sox are 1-9 in their last 10 games in field turf.
The UNDER is 16-5 in Chicago's last 21 games on field turf.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Twins: Kevin Slowey is 1-1 with a no-decision in his last three starts but he's been lit up pretty good in each of those outings. In his last three appearances, Slowey has given up 15 runs in just 15 innings, although the Twins won two of those games thanks in large part to an explosive offense. Slowey was abused his last time out versus the White Sox, giving up an obscene 10 hits and eight runs in just three innings of work. The OVER is 6-2 in Slowey's last eight starts.

Twins are 18-5 in their last 23 home games.
Twins are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings at Minnesota.

Key Injuries - OF Carlos Gomez (.248; back) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

CC Sabathia, Milwaukee Brewers (4-0, 1.36)

Sabathia, who was enduring a mediocre season with the Cleveland Indians, has excelled since joining the Brewers.

Sabathia is 3-0 in his last three starts as a Brewer with a 1.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP. He has 31 strikeouts in 33 IP and has not surrendered more than two earned runs in a contest in that span. The left-hander is also 10-8 overall this season with a 3.30 ERA and is 2-0 at Miller Park.

The Brewers are 19-8 in their last 27 home games and are 19-6 in their last 25 against the NL Central.

                  Slumping

Greg Maddux, San Diego Padres (3-8, 4.18)

It may be time for Maddux to close the curtain on his stellar career. Mad Dog is winless in his last 10 starts and is 0-1 with a 6.02 in his last three overall.

Maddux is 1-3 at home and has conceded 10 earned runs and 22 hits in his last four starts at Petco Park. He is 0-1 with a lofty 11.57 ERA this season against the Arizona Diamondbacks and has a 2-11 career mark against the club.

The Padres are 2-12 in their last 14 home games and are 2-7 in Maddux' last nine against a team with a winning record.

Braden Looper, St. Louis Cardinals (9-8, 4.49)

Looper has just three wins in his last 10 starts and is 0-2 in his last three with 7.07 ERA and 1.79 WHIP. He has also relinquished 11 earned runs and 22 hits in his last 14 IP.

Looper is 1-2 in his last three road starts and is 5-3 with a 4.23 ERA outside Busch Stadium. The right-hander has also surrendered 10 earned runs and five HRs in his last three road outings.

The Cardinals are 1-5 in Looper's last six starts following a team loss in their previous game and are 6-15 in their last 21 trips to Atlanta.

Hot Lines: Monday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit (+100, 10 1/2)

The Tigers have serious bullpen issues right now. Before yesterday's game, Jim Leyland announced that Fernando Rodney would replace Todd Jones as the team's closer mainly because Jones' ERA has ballooned to 4.99. To make matters worse, set-up man Joel Zumaya had to leave the game in the eighth inning, forcing Leyland to bring Rodney into a game that would require the new closer to throw 42 pitches to get the final five outs.

When asked if he would be able to pitch on Monday, Rodney replied: "I don't know. Probably no."

Kenny Rogers gets the start for Detroit today and although the 43-year-old lefty is coming off an impressive road start in Kansas City, he hasn't gone beyond the sixth inning in his last two outings. The bullpen will almost certainly be a factor for the Tigers in this game - and considering the state of affairs, that can't be good.

                      Pick: White Sox

                      Tampa Bay at Toronto (-113, 7 1/2)

It's always risky when you try to predict what will happen in an A.J. Burnett start - the Blue Jays' No. 2 starter just might be the most unpredictable pitcher in baseball. But Burnett's stuff has been so good in his last few outings, it's almost enough to make you believe the inevitable horror show isn't on the horizon.

But if Burnett can keep up the pace that has earned him a 2-1 record and 1.77 ERA over his last three starts and James Shields dominates the Blue Jays as he has throughout his entire career (5-0, 2.43 ERA vs. Blue Jays in five career meetings), the scorekeepers should have an easy day in Toronto.

                      Pick: Under

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Red Sox (-155, O/U 9): Daisuke Matsuzaka has been close to untouchable over his last five starts, allowing just three runs in 30.2 innings of work.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

The OVER is 5-1 in Lilly's last 6 starts overall.

Key Injuries - Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Brewers (-175, O/U 7.5): C.C. Sabathia has been a monster since coming over from Cleveland to Milwaukee. In four starts with the Brewers, Sabathia has pitched three complete games and has only allowed five runs over 33 innings, while striking out 31. In other words, complete and utter dominance. Overall, the Brewers and Indians are a combined 8-2 in Sabathia's last 10 starts.

Brewers are 25-10 in their last 35 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 7-2 in Milwaukee's last 9 home games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins [8:10 PM ET]

White Sox (-115, O/U 8.5): Mark Buehrle has been sharp in his last 10 starts, allowing two runs or less an impressive seven times.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5
