    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers [WGN | 1:05 PM ET]

White Sox: Javier Vazquez has been hammered over his last 10 starts, winning just two decisions over that span. Vazquez has allowed five runs or more five times and in his last seven outings. One of those starts was against the Tigers where Vazquez took the loss after giving up 10 hits and five runs over six innings. In his career versus Detroit, Vazquez is 5-5 with a 4.48 ERA. In 10 starts on the road this season, he's just 2-5 and opposing hitters are batting a lofty .296 against him.

The OVER is 9-1 in Chicago's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-120, O/U 10): Zach Miner makes his second start for the Tigers this season after pitching six shutout innings against the Royals his last time out. Miner has two starts and nine relief appearances in his career against the White Sox but things haven't gone very well for him. He is 0-5 with an ERA of 7.08. The last time Miner faced Chicago, they lit him up for four runs in just two innings.

Tigers are 1-5 in their last 6 home games.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs [TBS | 2:20 PM ET]

Marlins: Rick VandenHurk has started three games for the Marlins this season, with his most recent outing against the Braves being his best. VandenHurk got the win after pitching five scoreless innings versus Atlanta. In his prior two starts, VandenHurk had allowed seven runs in just 5.1 innings of work. The Marlins have won two of the three games VandenHurk has started this season.

Marlins are 12-1 in the last 13 meetings.
The OVER is 16-8 in the last 24 meetings.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-175): After winning four consecutive starts, Jason Marquis is 0-3 with one no-decision in his last four outings. Even though he hasn't recorded a win, Marquis has actually pitched well in his last three starts, allowing just five runs in 20 innings pitched. Marquis has been banged around pretty good by the Marlins over his career, going 4-5 with a 6.88 ERA. The OVER is 6-3 in Marquis' nine starts at Wrigley Field this year.

Cubs are 20-6 in their last 26 home games.

The UNDER is 9-2 in Chicago's last 11 games vs. NL East.

Key Injuries - OF Jim Edmonds (.237; knee) is doubtful.
Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants [4:05 PM ET]

Diamondbacks (-145, O/U 8): After losing six starts in a row, Randy Johnson has rebounded to win three straight. During his three-game winning streak, the Big Unit has given up just five runs in 19.1 innings pitched, while striking out 17. In 22 career starts versus the Giants, Johnson is only 7-8 but he does posses an impressive 3.38 ERA. While he may not quite be the Randy Johnson of old, the UNDER is still a moneymaker with the Unit on the mound, going 6-3-1 over his last 10 starts.

Diamondbacks are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in Johnson's last 9 Sunday starts.

Key Injuries - OF Justin Upton (.242; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Giants: Don't look now, but the much-maligned Barry Zito is 2-0 with one no-decision in his last three starts. During that three-game stretch, Zito has allowed three runs or less each time out. Zito can't be happy to be at home, where he's a dismal 2-8 with an ERA of 6.43 on the year. Zito is just 2-5 against the Diamondbacks in his career but his ERA is a respectable 3.88.

Giants are 8-21 in their last 29 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 8-1 in San Francisco's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Dave Roberts (.208; knee) has returned.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Yankees: The Yankees have to be thrilled with Sidney Ponson up to this point. After trading for Ponson last month, New York is a perfect 4-0 with him on the mound. Since joining the Yankees, Ponson has allowed 11 runs in 22.2 innings of work but he's benefited from 41 runs of support from the Bombers offense. Ponson has been absolutely abused by the Red Sox, sporting an anemic 3-11 record and 6.61 ERA in 20 starts against Boston. The OVER is 8-2 in Ponson's last 10 starts.

Yankees are 12-1 in their last 13 games on grass.
The OVER is 23-7 in the last 30 meetings at Boston.

Key Injuries - C Jorge Posada (.268; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-165, O/U 10): Jon Lester has only lost once in his last 10 starts and the Red Sox are a stellar 8-2 over that span. Lester has been particularly tough in his last three outings, allowing just five runs in 23.2 innings of work. Lester pitched an absolute gem his last time out against New York, throwing a complete game five-hit shutout. Lester has been a beast at Fenway Park this season, going 4-1 with a sparkling 2.93 ERA.

Red Sox are 40-13 in their last 53 home games.
Red Sox are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

            Streaking Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

Randy Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks (7-7, 4.89)

Don't be fooled by Johnson's average record, the Big Unit has been dominating opponents as of late. Johnson is 3-0 with a solid 2.33 ERA and 0.62 WHIP in his past three starts.

The left-hander has conceded just five earned runs in his last 19 IP and is fresh off a spectacular two-hit outing against the Chicago Cubs. He also has a 1.50 season ERA against the San Francisco Giants.

The Diamondbacks are 5-1 in the Big Units' last six Sunday starts and the Giants are 1-4 in Barry Zito's last five starts against the Diamondbacks.

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox (8-3, 3.20)

Lester, who has been an excellent addition to Boston's rotation, is 2-0 in his last three starts with a 2.00 ERA. He is also 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA at Fenway Park.

Lester is unbeaten in his last nine and has led the Red Sox to a solid 8-1 mark in that span. His sole setback came at the hands of Oakland Athletics on May 25.

The lefty is 1-0 this season against the New York Yankees and has a 3.77 career-ERA against the club. Boston is also 17-5 in Lester's last 22 home starts and is 13-3 in Lester's last 16 starts against the AL East.

            Slumping

Garrett Olson, Baltimore Orioles (6-5, 6.11)

Olson has just two wins in his last 10 starts and is 0-2 in his last three and has an 11.30 ERA in that period. He has also relinquished 18 earned runs in his past 18.4 IP.

Olson is 0-1 in his last five at home and is 4-2 with a 6.16 career-ERA at Oriole Park. He has also surrendered 20 earned runs and five home runs in his last five home starts.

Baltimore is 0-4 in Olson's last four starts. The Orioles are also 3-10 in their last 13 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Atlanta at Philadelphia (-140, 9 1/2)

Would somebody please tell me what Joe Blanton has ever done to earn this reputation. some reason he's counted among the upper echelon of MLB starting pitchers. And he garners prices like this from the oddsmakers.

In this situation, I'd much rather put my money on Jorge Campillo and the Braves. Campillo has a better ERA, he’s been a moneymaker all season, and he's been light's out on the road all year.

The Braves also get the edge today because Philadelphia's bullpen got a workout in last night's razor-close 10-9 final with the Phillies as huge -270 favorites. Cole Hamels was chased early in the game and the Phillies had to call on six relievers to cover 5 1/3 innings.

              Pick: Braves

White Sox are 13-6 in the last 19 meetings at Detroit.
The OVER is 9-1 in Chicago's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Tigers (-120, O/U 10): Zach Miner makes his second start for the Tigers this season after pitching six shutout innings against the Royals his last time out. Miner has two starts and nine relief appearances in his career against the White Sox but things haven't gone very well for him. He is 0-5 with an ERA of 7.08. The last time Miner faced Chicago, they lit him up for four runs in just two innings.

Tigers are 1-5 in their last 6 home games.
Tigers are 8-0 in their last 8 Sunday games.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 4

NL East.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Giants: Don't look now, but the much-maligned Barry Zito is 2-0 with one no-decision in his last three starts. During that three-game stretch, Zito has allowed three runs or less each time out. Zito can't be happy to be at home, where he's a dismal 2-8 with an ERA of 6.43 on the year. Zito is just 2-5 against the Diamondbacks in his career but his ERA is a respectable 3.88.

Giants are 8-21 in their last 29 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 8-1 in San Francisco's last 9 home games.
