    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, July 27

Kyle Busch is once again coming off a victory as the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series head to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard on Sunday.

Busch got past Jimmie Johnson on the final laps last time out to take the checkered flag in the LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. The standings leader now has seven wins on the season, and he's 262 points up on second-place Dale Earnhardt Jr.

And that makes Busch the 4/1 Vegas favorite to get the win at the Brickyard on Sunday. Johnson is just behind him at 5/1 on that list, with Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart both at 7/1. Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, and Kasey Kahne are all listed at 8/1 odds to win at Indy, with Matt Kenseth rounding out the first group of contenders at 12/1.

Gordon has had the most Cup Series success at Indy amongst active drivers, as he's visited victory lane there four times (2004, 2001, 1998, 1994). Stewart won this event both last year and in 2005. Johnson ('06) and Harvick ('03) also have Brickyard victories.

On the diamond Sunday's marquee contest takes place in the evening, as the Red Sox host the Yankees in the finale of their three-game series. Jon Lester (8-3, 3.20 ERA) gets the ball for Boston in that game; he's coming off 7 1-3 shutout innings in a win over the Mariners. Sidney Ponson (6-1, 4.02 ERA) will go up against Lester for the Yankees.

Other American League games on tap for Sunday include Minnesota at Cleveland, the White Sox at Detroit, Seattle at Toronto, the Angels at Baltimore, and Texas at Oakland. As well, the Rays will send out Andy Sonnanstine (10-5, 4.54 ERA) to battle the Royals.

Over in the National League the top pitching duel on Sunday sees the Cardinals' Kyle Lohse (12-2, 3.35 ERA) taking on the Mets' Johan Santana (8-7, 3.05 ERA). St. Louis is 8-2 over Lohse's past 10 outings, and the righthander hasn't been tagged with a loss since May 8. Santana hasn't pitched poorly, but New York is 3-7 over his past 10 starts.

The rest of the NL schedule on Sunday includes Colorado at Cincinnati, San Diego at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Philadelphia, Houston at Milwaukee, Florida at the Cubs, and Washington at the Dodgers. As well, it's a battle of lefties in San Francisco when the Giants' Barry Zito (5-12, 5.56 ERA) faces the D-Backs' Randy Johnson (7-7, 4.89 ERA).

On the gridiron the Arena Football League closes out its campaign on Sunday with ArenaBowl XXII at the New Orleans Arena. The Philadelphia Soul opened as the 3-point favorites over the San Jose SaberCats for that contest, and that line has moved up to 3.5 points as kickoff approaches. The total for the championship is set at 118.5.

Up in the Canadian Football League the week concludes with a matchup between the Argonauts and the Roughriders in Saskatchewan. Former Rider Kerry Joseph will be looking to guide his new team to a win in that game, but he'll have to do it as a 5.5-point road underdog. The OVER/UNDER for the 7:05pm ET matchup is pegged at 54 points.

Finally, the WNBA offers up six games on Sunday: New York at Atlanta, Connecticut at Washington, Los Angeles at Minnesota, San Antonio at Detroit, Sacramento at Seattle, and Indiana at Phoenix. The Shock/Silver Stars matchup is a battle of the top teams in each conference; Detroit is 16-10 on the season, while San Antonio's record is at 17-9.

      Weekend Six-pack

Venting on the Pirates helping Bronx in the pennant race.....

-- Wonder why the Pirates haven't had winnng season since 1992? Try these words: cheap-stupid-gutless.

-- Xavier Nady is hitting .330; Damaso Marte is a quality lefty reliever; how could the Pirates not get Phil Hughes for them?

-- God forbid they actually keep their good players, but for a small market team, the ultimate small market team, to bail out the fatcat team that needed help, it just doesn't make sense.

-- As for Jose Tabata, the main cog in the package Pirates are getting from Bronx, scouts from outside Bronx organization had criticized him for not always giving his best effort. Thats just freakin' great-- he'll be terrific with the hideous Buccos.

-- At 48-54, Pirates actually had a chance to finish .500 this season, but now, no way. Must be fun to root for them.

-- Pirates better have gotten few million bucks under table in this deal, or why would they do it? Why wouldn't they hold out until July 31st deadline and try to get Hughes? Asinine.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

        13) Cubs and Milwaukee are now tied for first place after pair of HRs by Hermida lifted Marlins to 3-2 win in 12 innings. The Phillies and Marlins both gained a game on the Mets Saturday.

        12) Braves scored nine runs in fourth inning, and lost. Phillies scored seven in fifth inning of a 10-9 win. At least the injury-prone Mike Hampton got back in a big league game, first time in just under three years.

        11) Pirates got whacked at home again by the hideous Padres, falling to 0-2 after trading Nady/Marte.

        10) Ray Durham hit two doubles, scored three runs as Brewers beat Houston late 6-4, despite being outhit 14-7.

        9) Reds are now 0-6 when prospect Homer Bailey starts. Is it at all possible to get HOMER Bailey and Grant BALFOUR on the same team? Two worst names ever for a pitcher.

        8) Skip Schumacher had six hits, Albert Pujols five, including his first HR in 22 days (game-winner in 14th inning), giving the Redbirds their first win of the week, a much-needed victory.

        7) Tim Lincecum struck out 13, walked none, and left with a 3-2 lead, but bullpen blew it as Webb won his 14th game, 5-3, a big win for first-place Snakes, since Dodgers, Rockies also won.

        6) If you held a four-team tournament right now with Nationals, Pirates, Mariners and A's, no one would win. They're all either terrible or demoralized from their front offices quitting on them.

        5) Tampa Rays are two games up in AL East; Carl Crawford hit pair of triples to snap out of an extended slump, including a big two-run triple to break game open in 8th inning. Rays won, 5-3.

        4) Texas is an offensive machine, especially against a disprited opponent; they haven't quit on the season, are only 5.5 games out of the Wild Card slot. Shouldn't they try to add pitcher for the stretch run? They sure as hell hit well enough to win.

        3) Angels are jogging to playoffs, but are they good enough to win in October? Casey Kotchman is having a huge week, while the Teixeira-to-Anaheim rumors make the rounds. Will they do anything to improve their roster? Fuentes maybe?

        2) Arizona is 52-51, Dodgers are 51-52, but Colorado is 8-2 last ten games, and are definitely still contenders, six games out of first place in a horrible division. Keep an eye on the Rockies.

        1) Looks like the Mets won't make move before Thursday, but they're playing so well, they really don't need to. Tampa Rays have to do something, and it would be nice if the Marlins made an effort to improve the roster; Lord knows they didn't spend much on the original roster- they must have some money left to add a player or two. Will Red Sox counter Bronx' move?

Arena Bowl, New Orleans: San Jose vs Philadelphia........

SaberCats led Philadelphia 33-14 at the half back in a Week 7 home game, lost 58-57, which made Soul 7-0 at time, and Cats 3-4; defending champs are 10-1 since then, winning last eight games, and have chance to not only avenge the Week 7 loss, but to win a second consecutive Arena Bowl. Philly got to 9-0, then lost three of four, but hasn't lost since, winning their last five games. Should be an excellent show for the AFL, which is in a resurgence since ESPN bought part of the league.

                          Preview and Predictions

                          CFL games – Week 5

                          Sunday, July 27

                          Toronto (54) vs. Saskatchewan (-4.5)

Argonauts at Roughriders History: When Toronto travels to Saskatchewan, they are 6-6-0 ATS, 6-6 SU and the O/U is 8-4-0 since 1996.

Kerry Joseph returns to his old stomping grounds this Sunday and the Boatmen are a +4.5 point Road Underdog vs. the 4-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders. However, if Joseph is looking for his old #4 in the Green and White dressing room, seems there's a new sheriff in town and his name is not Reggie Hammond, but Darian Durant! Durant has shown great poise and maturity as the new signal caller for the Roughriders and it's going to force head coach Ken Miller to make a wise and educated decision when Marcus Crandell is ready to come back. The Riders are coming off a exciting 41-33 win over the Montreal Alouettes this past Sunday and they are averaging 33.3 Points For a game. The Argos are 2-2 SU on the season and their second win of the year came from a 109 yard drive last week vs. the hapless Eskimos defense. The Argonauts looked old on defense last week, as veterans like O'Shea, Wheaton and Fletcher were starting to look a bit slow and when was the last time the Argos were involved in 3 straight games that went OVER the posted total? You would have to go back to Week #9, August 17th 2003 to find the answer and that 4th game went under the total vs. Edmonton in an 18-15 lost. Plus, Toronto will be without their middle linebacker, as Kevin Eiben will be out a few weeks with a MCL tear.
The Argos are allowing 31.5 Points Against a game and having your old defensive coordinator as your new head coach is one major reason why the Argos are allowing so many Points Against.

Every team has an identity, right now I'm still trying to figure out what makes the Argos tick and what will be their bread and butter the remaining games of the season. If Kerry Joseph can get a reliable go to receiver he can trust and the Argos defense can get their Points Against Average down to 27 or lower a game; they could be the team to beat in the Eastern Division, as nobody really wants to win this division!

                          forecast: Saskatchewan 33 Toronto 17

Stat of the Game: When TORONTO team played as a 3.5 to 6.5 Underdog - Coming off a Home win as a Favorite; The Argos are 3-7 SU and ATS in this spot since '96.

Good luck and remember, this is the CFL, anything can happen during the 3 minute warning! Trust me; I've got the scars to prove it!
