In my mind, it depends on who the player is. The problem with this trade is that Casey Blake has been an average hitter (career .783 OPS) and is a poor defensive 3rd baseman. For a team in the Dodgers position right now, they clearly needed a bigger splash to make a push for the playoffs and this trade is essentially trading 2 good prospects for 1 draft pick. The Phillies made a similar mistake by trading for Blanton.
The Brewers and Cubs, on the other hand, had the right idea by trading for guys who could tip the scales in a playoff run. As you said, prospects are no sure thing, but that doesn't mean they don't have value. In this case, I think the prospects are more valuable than a rented league average 3rd baseman for a team currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in.
