    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, July 26

Brandon Webb and Tim Lincecum have two dozen wins between them this season, and the two studs will face each other on Saturday when the Giants host the Diamondbacks.

Webb (13-4, 3.11 ERA) is coming off a solid outing vs. the rival Dodgers last Sunday in which he surrendered just a single earned run on six hits over eight innings of work. The righthander walked three batters in the contest, and struck out four; on the season Webb has issued just 36 free passes, and he's fanned 116 over his 139 innings pitched.

The Diamondbacks are just 5-5 over their ace's last 10 starts, but Webb is 4-2 with four no-decisions in that span. Webb faced San Francisco twice back in April, and walked away with the win both times. Over those two contests on April 16 and April 22 the righthander gave up just four earned runs on 12 hits over his 14 innings, striking out 12.

Lincecum (11-3, 2.79 ERA) is turning into one of the better pitchers in the National League, but he has been inconsistent over his last 10 starts. The righthander is 4-2 with four no-decisions in his last 10 trips to the mound, but he was knocked around for four or more earned runs in four of those games (including last time out against the Brewers).

The only time Lincecum faced the Diamondbacks this season was on May 27, when he picked up a win after giving up three earned runs on six hits over 7 1-3 innings of work. Lincecum fanned seven in that contest, and he's struck out 143 over his 135 2-3 innings.

While the D-Backs are in San Francisco on Saturday the other NL West contender, the Dodgers, will be hosting the Nationals. Derek Lowe (7-8, 3.97 ERA) will get the ball for Los Angeles in that matchup, while Odalis Perez (3-7, 3.99 ERA) will pitch for Washington. The Dodgers have come out on top in each of Lowe's past three outings.

Other NL games on Saturday include Atlanta at Philadelphia, San Diego at Pittsburgh, Houston at Milwaukee, Colorado at Cincinnati, and St. Louis at the Mets. As well, the Marlins will continue their series against the Cubs with a 1:05pm ET contest; Chris Volstad (2-1, 2.16 ERA) will take on Rich Harden (0-1, 0.73 ERA in the NL) in that one.

American League fans will probably be tuned into the Yankees/Red Sox matchup on Saturday (Andy Pettitte, 11-7, 3.86 ERA vs. Tim Wakefield, 6-7, 3.69 ERA), but the White Sox/Tigers game promises to be just as good. John Danks (7-4, 3.03 ERA) will take the mound for Chicago, while Justin Verlander (8-9, 3.95 ERA) pitches for Detroit.

The Mariners and Blue Jays will play a matinee in Toronto on Saturday, while Oakland hosts Texas later in the afternoon. Other AL games on Saturday include the Angels at Baltimore, Minnesota at Cleveland, and just-won't-go-away Tampa Bay in Kansas City.

The only other league in action on Saturday is the WNBA, which will shut down for their Olympic break after Monday's contests. Saturday's schedule sees Chicago at Houston at 8:30pm ET, and Indiana at Sacramento at 10:00pm ET. Monarchs guard Chelsea Newton left the team's win over the Mercury on Thursday night with a sprained ankle.

                  Sunday, July 27

                  Toronto (54) vs. Saskatchewan (-4.5)

Argonauts at Roughriders History: When Toronto travels to Saskatchewan, they are 6-6-0 ATS, 6-6 SU and the O/U is 8-4-0 since 1996.

Kerry Joseph returns to his old stomping grounds this Sunday and the Boatmen are a +4.5 point Road Underdog vs. the 4-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders. However, if Joseph is looking for his old #4 in the Green and White dressing room, seems there's a new sheriff in town and his name is not Reggie Hammond, but Darian Durant! Durant has shown great poise and maturity as the new signal caller for the Roughriders and it's going to force head coach Ken Miller to make a wise and educated decision when Marcus Crandell is ready to come back. The Riders are coming off a exciting 41-33 win over the Montreal Alouettes this past Sunday and they are averaging 33.3 Points For a game. The Argos are 2-2 SU on the season and their second win of the year came from a 109 yard drive last week vs. the hapless Eskimos defense. The Argonauts looked old on defense last week, as veterans like O'Shea, Wheaton and Fletcher were starting to look a bit slow and when was the last time the Argos were involved in 3 straight games that went OVER the posted total? You would have to go back to Week #9, August 17th 2003 to find the answer and that 4th game went under the total vs. Edmonton in an 18-15 lost. Plus, Toronto will be without their middle linebacker, as Kevin Eiben will be out a few weeks with a MCL tear.
The Argos are allowing 31.5 Points Against a game and having your old defensive coordinator as your new head coach is one major reason why the Argos are allowing so many Points Against.

Every team has an identity, right now I'm still trying to figure out what makes the Argos tick and what will be their bread and butter the remaining games of the season. If Kerry Joseph can get a reliable go to receiver he can trust and the Argos defense can get their Points Against Average down to 27 or lower a game; they could be the team to beat in the Eastern Division, as nobody really wants to win this division!

                  forecast: Saskatchewan 33 Toronto 17

Stat of the Game: When TORONTO team played as a 3.5 to 6.5 Underdog - Coming off a Home win as a Favorite; The Argos are 3-7 SU and ATS in this spot since '96.

Good luck and remember, this is the CFL, anything can happen during the 3 minute warning! Trust me; I've got the scars to prove it!

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                    MLB

                    Saturday, July 26

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking Starting Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Saturday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                    Streaking

Brandon Webb, Arizona Diamondbacks (13-4, 3.11)

Webb has been lights out for the Diamondbacks. In fact, the right-hander has been sensational since joining the club in 2003.

Webb has won at least 13 starts in each of his last three seasons and he is on pace to extend that streak this season. He is 1-0 in his last three starts with a 1.29 ERA and is 7-3 on the road with a 2.71 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. In 16 career starts against the San Francisco Giants, Webb is 11-5 with a 3.22 ERA. He is also 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA against the Giants this season.

The Diamondbacks are 20-9 in their last 29 Saturday games and the Giants are 9-21 in their last 30 at AT&T Park.

Mike Pelfrey, New York Mets (8-6, 3.81)

The Mets have climbed to the top of the NL East and Pelfrey is partly responsible for their success. The right-hander is 2-0 with a remarkable 2.05 ERA and 0.73 WHIP in his last three starts and is undefeated in his last 10.

Pelfrey has conceded just three earned runs in his last four home starts, including back-to-back shutouts over the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants. He is 4-4 at home this season and is 1-0 with a 1.29 career-ERA against the St. Louis Cardinals.

New York is 9-1 in its last 10 home games and 13-3 in its last 16 overall.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (8-9, 3.95)

Verlander is 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in his past three starts and has not surrendered more than two earned runs in eight straight starts.

The right-hander has lost just two of his last 10 and is 3-1 in his last three home starts. He is also 23-11 with a 3.67 career-ERA in the Motor City.

The Tigers are 4-0 in their last four against the AL Central and 20-8 in their last 28 at U.S. Cellular Field.

                    Slumping

                    Jo-Jo Reyes, Atlanta Braves (3-9, 4.95)

It's been a rough couple of months for Reyes. The lefty has just one win in his last 10 starts and is 0-3 in his last three outings with a lofty 10.12 ERA.

In his last three starts, Reyes has surrendered 12 earned runs in just 10.2 IP and has a mere four strikeouts in that span. Reyes is winless in two starts against the Philadelphia Phillies this season and has a 5.19 career-ERA against the club.

The Braves are 3-8 in Reyes' last 11 road starts. They are also 5-16 in their last 21 against the Phillies and are 1-4 in their last trips to Philadelphia.

Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 1:05 ET]

Marlins: Chris Volstad has something in common with Chicago's Rich Harden - he will be making his third start of the season with his current team. Volstad has been solid in his first two starts, allowing four runs and 11 hits in 14.2 innings with four walks and nine strikeouts. He also pitched outstanding in his only road start, giving up just one run in 8.2 innings of a 3-1 win at Los Angeles.

Marlins are 11-1 in the last 10 meetings.
The OVER is 16-7 in the last 23 meetings.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-240): It's hard to comlain about Harden's first couple starts with Chicago, as the right-hander has only allowed one run and six hits in 12.1 innings of work. He has walked four batters and struck out 20 but has yet to record a victory. Harden faced the Marlins when he was with the A's and walked away with a no-decision in an eventual 7-6 victory back on June 20th after giving up one run and five hits in 5.2 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

Cubs are 20-5 in their last 25 home games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Chicago's last 10 games vs. NL East.

Key Injuries - OF Jim Edmonds (.237; knee) is doubtful.
Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is on the 15-day DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Yankees: Andy Pettitte will be out for revenge here after getting hit hard in a 7-0 home loss to the Red Sox back on July 3rd. Pettitte lasted only 4.2 innings in that outing, surrendering six runs and nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts. That was his first start with more walks than strikeouts since April 10th. He is 6-3 in 10 road starts with a solid 3.69 ERA.

Yankees are 11-1 in their last 12 games on grass.
The OVER is 22-8 in the last 30 meetings at Boston.

Key Injuries - C Jorge Posada (.268; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-125, O/U 9): Tim Wakefield has pitched much better at home this season, going 5-2 in eight starts with an impressive 3.04 ERA. Wakefield has been especially good in his last two outings at Fenway Park, allowing just one run and four hits in a combined 14 innings with two walks and 12 strikeouts. The Sox won both those two games by a combined score of 17-1. However, he is just 9-16 lifetime vs. New York with a 5.01 ERA.

Red Sox are 40-12 in their last 52 home games.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; hand) has returned.
OF Manny Ramirez (.301; knee) is questionable.
SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets [6:10 PM ET]

Cardinals: Joel Pineiro has not suffered a loss in his last four starts thanks to great run support more than quality pitching. Pineiro has walked away with no-decisions three times during that stretch before watching his teammates go on to victory twice. He allowed 21 hits and 10 runs in 10.2 innings of those two wins as the Cards outscored the opposition by a 19-13 margin. Pineiro is 2-3 in 10 road starts this season with a 5.02 ERA.

Cardinals are 0-5 in their last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Brian Barton (.246; hand) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Chris Duncan (.248; neck) is on the 15-day DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets (-135, O/U 9.5): Brandon Knight make his first MLB start after being named to the U.S. Olympic team. Knight previously made 11 relief appearances for the Yankees from 2001-02 and is excited about this opportunity even if it's just a spot start in place of Pedro Martinez. "To be here and the whole Olympic thing, it's amazing how this game is and how life is, how much it can just change like that," Knight said. "It's a real strange situation to be in. You can't beat it either way - you get to play for the country, you get to play for the Mets. It's unbelievable."

Mets are 10-1 in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 9-2-2 in New York's last 13 home games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

White Sox: John Danks will try to rebound from his second-worst outing of the season when he goes to the mound for Chicago. Danks surrendered six runs and nine hits in four innings last time out against the Royals on July 20th, walking away with a no-decision in an eventual 8-7 loss. The Sox have dropped consecutive starts with Danks twice this season but only once since May 3rd. He is 4-1 in nine road starts this season with a stellar 1.92 ERA.

The OVER is 8-1 in Chicago's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Joe Crede (.255; back) is on the 15-day DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-150, O/U 9): Detroit has won six straight with Justin Verlander on the hill, and he has earned victories in each of his last four starts. Verlander has been very consistent in his last eight outings, allowing two runs or less each time. Five of his eight wins this season have come at home, where he owns a 3.69 ERA in 12 starts. However, Verlander has struggled against the White Sox during his career, going 2-6 in 11 starts with an inflated 5.45 ERA.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

The Yankees look to make it two straight in Boston and take advantage of the Red Sox' 4-6 record as a home favorite between -100 and -125. New York is the underdog pick (+105) according to Dunkel, which has the Yankees favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: NY Yankees (+105). Here are all of today's games.

                              Saturday, July 26

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore (+110, 10)

The Orioles were surprisingly successful in the first half of the season, particularly at home, where they racked up more than six units for backers. But their luck seems to have run out and the second half of the season has looked more like what people expected from the O's. Since the All-Star break, the Orioles have gone 3-6 at home and a series against one of the best road teams in the majors won't help that.

The Angels are 32-18 on the road and they've dominated Baltimore in recent meetings. Dating back to last season, the Angels are 10-4 in head-to-head meetings with their East Coast opponents. Overall, the Angels have been almost unstoppable since the All-Star break. They've lost only one of their seven games in the second half of the season.

                              Pick: Angels

                              Arizona at San Francisco (+100, 6 1/2)

Maybe I'm a sucker, but I just can't resist the "over" in this game. You're not going to see a total lower than this one and there are only two reasons this number was listed this low - starting pitchers Brandon Webb and Tim Lincecum.

These are two of the best starters in the league, but this total does not represent the fact that the D-Backs have gotten their offense rolling recently, smacking 10 runs against the Giants last night and batting .280 over their last 10 games. It also doesn't account for the two mediocre bullpens that will come into play at some point in this game.

                              Pick: Over
