Yankees add Nady, Marte in trade with Pirates

    By Buster Olney
    ESPN The Magazine

The Yankees agreed Friday evening to a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates that would give New York left-handed pitcher Damaso Marte and right fielder Xavier Nady.

The Pirates will receive four minor leaguers including right-handed pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, right-handed pitcher George Kontos, left-handed pitcher Phil Coke and right fielder Jose Tabata in return. The trade is tentative pending physicals.

The Pirates pulled Nady after the first inning Friday night against San Diego.

Nady was in right field during the top of the first but was replaced by Jason Michaels in the field in the second.

Marte, one of the most coveted left-handed specialists in the game, was caught by television cameras hugging teammates in the dugout after leaving the bullpen shortly after.

"There is a trade in place, pending medical reviews of all the players involved on both clubs," Pirates director of media relations Jim Trdinich said. "That is all that is permissible to be announced at this time."

The Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and New York Mets all were thought to be interested in Nady, who was batting .330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs. Marte is 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings, and also was attracting interest from several teams.

Look at this post before the trade went down

The Yankees have acquired both Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates, WPGB's Rocco DeMaro reports.
Others have confirmed. No word yet on the return, but Melky Cabrera is still in the game for the Bombers. The team's top prospect, Austin Jackson, might be involved for that kind of return. The Yankees figure to have Nady rotate between the outfield and DH, but he'll be an everyday player. Marte will help set up for Mariano Rivera. The Pirates could make John Grabow their new closer and Steve Pearce their right fielder.

Damnit. Nady and Marte are both SOLID players. The OF/DH bat that they needed and a nice new setup guy to secure the 8th inning. I think this was a great trade for N.Y. and a bigger one than most or some realize. They filled their 2 biggest needs in one quick transaction. Damn, Damn, Damn .........

MCCUTCHEN, KARSTENS PART OF NADY DEAL
                  By JOEL SHERMAN

The package the YankeesNew York Yankees surrendered for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte is not as originally reported. It is fronted by outfielder Jose Tabata and pitcher Ross OhlendorfRoss Ohlendorf , but the other two pitchers the Yanks gave up in the trade were Jeff KarstensJeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen.

The original trade did have Phil Coke George Kontos in it, but the Pirates had enough concerns about the medical reports on Kontos and Coke that they decided to do Karstens and McCutchen instead.

McCutchen, who turns 26 in September, was 8-9 with a 3.14 ERA between Double- and Triple-A this season. He is known as a hard worker who really elevated his stock this year. But he also was suspended 50 games by the Commissioners Office for taking a performance-enhancing substance in 2006.

Karstens, who also turns 26 in September, pitched for the Yankees in 2006-2007, going 3-5 with a 5.65 ERA in 15 appearances, including nine starts. He has battled injuries much of the last two seasons and was 6-4 with a 3.80 in 12 Triple-A starts this season. However, the Yanks considered him expendable because many other starts had bypassed him on the depth chart, including Darrell Rasner, who in style is most like Karstens.

Tabata, a Double-A outfielder, and Ohlendorf, starting at Triple-A, were clearly the main two pieces for the Pirates.

As a Sox fan, I find these moves a lot more disturbing than if they had acquired Bonds.
