We will update when projected scores are available.

    Friday, July 25

    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 ET]

Marlins: Josh Johnson will make his third start of the season after two fairly successful outings following his return from Tommy John surgery. Johnson has yet to get a decision though after giving up five runs and 13 hits in 11.2 innings of work, walking three and striking out 10. The Marlins ended up winning both games by one run.

Marlins are 10-1 in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 16-6 in the last 22 meetings.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-190): Ryan Dempster rebounded nicely from his first loss at Wrigley Field this season by pitching eight shutout innings to earn a win at Houston last Sunday. Dempster walked just one Astro and allowed six hits in a 9-0 victory after the Giants dropped his home record to 10-1 at Wrigley with a 4-2 win the previous Sunday. The Cubs had won his previous 11 home starts.

Cubs are 20-4 in their last 23 home games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Chicago's last 9 games vs. NL East.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.281; hand) has returned.
OF Jim Edmonds (.237; knee) is doubtful.
Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is day-to-day.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: Joba Chamberlain will make his first career start at Fenway Park after earning a no-decision against the Red Sox back on July 6th. Chamberlain pitched six solid innings in that outing, allowing three runs and four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. He had made eight starts overall this season, walking away with no-decisions six times despite allowing three runs or less in each outing. The Yankees are 6-2 in those games.

Yankees are 10-1 in their last 11 games on grass.
The OVER is 22-7 in the last 29 meetings at Boston..

Key Injuries - C Jorge Posada (.268; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-130, O/U 8.5): Josh Beckett has shown glimpses of his former self this season but has yet to do it consistently. The perfect example came last Saturday at Anaheim when he pitched six scoreless innings before allowing all four runs in the bottom of the seventh of a 4-2 loss. The one thing he does have going for him is a history of tremendous run support when he pitches against the Yankees. Beckett is 5-1 lifetime vs. New York with an inflated 5.75 ERA, including three wins this season as the Red Sox outscored the Yanks by a 17-12 margin.

Red Sox are 40-11 in their last 51 home games.
The OVER is 8-3 in Beckett's last 11 starts vs. New York.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; hand) is expected to return.
SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

White Sox: Chicago's Gavin Floyd will try to stay unbeaten against the Tigers when he faces them for the third time this season. Floyd's first two starts of the year came against Detroit, and he won both after allowing just seven hits and three runs in a combined 13.1 innings. He is 3-0 lifetime against the Tigers with a 2.43 ERA but just 3-4 in eight road starts overall with a 5.40 ERA.

The OVER is 7-1 in Chicago's last 8 games overall.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-125, O/U 10.5): Detroit's Nate Robertson will look to earn his first win since June 21st at San Diego when he toes the rubber against Chicago. Robertson is 0-2 in his last five starts, surrendering 44 hits and 20 runs during that stretch. He got bombed last time out at Baltimore, giving up seven runs and eight hits in just 2.1 innings of an 11-10 loss for his shortest start of the season. He is 6-6 in 18 career starts against the White Sox with a 5.02 ERA and has gone 3-3 at home this year in nine starts with a 4.45 ERA.

Tigers are 2-6 in Robertson's last 8 starts vs. Chicago.
The OVER is 6-2 in Detroit's last 8 games following a win.

    Key Injuries - NONE

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Cardinals: Mitchell Boggs returns to the starting rotation for the first time since getting rocked by the Mets in an 11-1 loss back on July 3rd. Boggs surrendered all 11 runs - 10 earned - in six innings with six walks and two strikeouts. The Cardinals had won his previous four starts, and Boggs earned a victory in three of them.

Cardinals are 0-4 in their last 4 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Brian Barton (.246; hand) is on the 15-day DL.

    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets (-175, O/U 9): New York has won the last eight starts by Mike Pelfrey, but perhaps even more impressive is that all eight were decided by two runs or more. The Mets were able to overcome Pelfrey's worst start during that stretch to win 7-5 last Sunday, as he gave up five runs and six hits - including three homers - in seven innings of work. Pelfrey had not allowed a homer in his previous 10 starts. He is 4-4 in 10 home starts with an impressive 2.35 ERA.

Mets are 9-1 in their last 10 home games.
The UNDER is 9-2-1 in New York's last 12 home games.

    Key Injuries - NONE

        Streaking Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Streaking

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (11-4, 3.05)

The Cubs are leading their division and Dempster is partially responsible for their success. The right-hander is 2-1 with a solid 2.08 ERA in his last three starts and is 10-1 and has a 2.81 ERA at Wrigley Field.

In his last three starts, Dempster has pitched 21.2 innings, striking out 18 and relinquishing just five earned runs. He also hasn't conceded a HR in that span and is 1-1 in two career starts against the Florida Marlins.

The Cubs are 4-1 in their last five against the NL East and 10-2 in their last 12 home games against a team with a winning record.

        Slumping

Zach Duke, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-7, 7.92)

Duke is winless in his last seven starts, conceding 27 earned runs in that span. He is coming off an embarrassing loss to the Colorado Rockies in which he surrendered nine earned runs on 10 hits in just five IP.

The left-hander is 0-2 with a lofty 12.82 ERA and 2.40 WHIP in his last three outings and has relinquished two homers in each of his last three starts.

The Padres are 0-4 in their last four against the NL West and are 3-13 in their last 16 against the San Diego Padres.

Brian Bannister, Kansas City Royals (7-8, 5.49)

Bannister has just three wins in his last 10 starts and has relinquished 23 earned runs and nine walks in his last four starts.

Bannister is 0-1 in his last three starts, posting a 9.82 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. In his last two home starts, the right-hander has relinquished 12 earned runs in 10 IP and is also 0-1 and has a 10.80 ERA in one start this season against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Royals are 0-4 in their last four in KC and are 36-84 in their last 120 against the AL East. They are also 6-15 in their last 21 against Tampa Bay.

Major League Baseball – Hot lines

          MLB

          Hot lines: Today’s MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot lines: Friday's best MLB bets

Florida vs. Chicago Cubs (-175, N/A)

The wind is blowing straight out to center field at about 7 mph today at Wrigley Field. That’s not much at most parks, but in Chicago it’s enough to give pitchers an ulcer.

Ryan Dempster puts his ridiculous 10-1 home record on the line against a Marlins club that sits just two games back in the NL East. That could keep the total low and give some nice value to the over when the line comes out.

          Pick: over

          Seattle vs. Toronto (-160, 9)

We could go into a lot of detail about this game, but sometimes it’s better to let the numbers do the talking.

Seattle’s Miguel Batista has a 17.55 ERA over his last three starts and the Mariners are 5-11 in his outings this year. Batista has been bouncing between the bullpen and the starting staff and now that the M’s are on a five-game losing streak, he’ll get another shot at a start.

The Jays’ bats have recently come alive, so his prospects for staying out of the pen aren’t looking good.

          Pick: Blue Jays

Arizona vs. San Francisco (+125, 7)

There haven’t been many seven-run totals in the majors this season and on Friday this is one of two. The other one is in the Nationals-Dodgers game.

This total has more to do with Danny Haren’s 1.23 ERA over his past three starts than anything. He’s only seeing a line of -135 though, because the Giants are coming off a three-game winning streak.

San Francisco also swept the last series between these two clubs back in May so you’d have to think the D-backs would like to return the favor against the divisional basement dweller.

          Pick: Arizona

                      Today's Baseball Pick

                      Texas PK +110 vs. Oakland

Keys to selection: The Texas Rangers send Vicente Padilla to the mound this evening on the West Coast to face Gallagher and the A?s. The Rangers are 14-5 SU when Padilla gets the nod this year and will look to him for guidance to stop this two game losing streak.

Using my Law of Average calculator, when the Texas Rangers are 1-2 SU in their last 3 games, they are 13-3 SU in the following game. Plus, they might be catching an A?s team in a letdown spot here, as Oakland is coming off a 6-game road stand and teams face such a hectic schedule on their first game back at home. Plus, when OAKLAND is a -120 to -140 home Favorite vs. Right handed pitchers this season, they are 5-14 SU in this role.

Play the Rangers at PK +110 this evening.
