    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, July 21

Rich Harden will take to the mound again on Monday night as the Chicago Cubs open up a big three-game road series down in the desert versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Harden impressed in his National League debut on July 12, holding the Giants scoreless on five hits over 5 1-3 innings of work, while walking three and striking out 10 batters. The righthander, though, had to settle for a no-decision in that contest (which Chicago eventually won 8-7). Harden's two teams are now 7-3 over his last 10 outings.

The D-Backs will counter Harden with Randy Johnson, who has won two straight starts since snapping a personal six-game losing skid. Johnson got the win on July 12 by holding the Phillies to four earned runs on five hits over six innings, and the lefthander was more impressive in his previous outing when he surrendered just one earned run on three hits over 6 1-3 innings in a win versus the Padres. Johnson fanned 10 that day.

On the season Johnson is now 6-7 with a 5.23 ERA, and he's walked 28 while striking out 95 in 98 innings of work. Harden is 5-1 with a tiny 2.19 ERA combined through his AL and NL appearances, and he's walked 34 while fanning 102 through 82 1-3 innings.

The rest of the NL matchups on Monday aren't as impressive, although the Cards will open their four-game home set against the Brewers. St. Louis is expected to send Joel Pineiro (3-4, 4.52 ERA) to the mound in that game, while Milwaukee will counter with Seth McClung (5-5, 4.16 ERA). Both those clubs are chasing the Cubs in the NL Central.

Other NL games on tap for Monday include Atlanta at Florida, San Diego at Cincinnati, the Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado, and Pittsburgh at Houston. Astros starter Roy Oswalt was placed on the disabled list with a hip injury, so the team is expected to send Runelvys Hernandez to the mound. Hernandez is 0-3 with a terrible 10.29 ERA this year.

Over in the American League there's a full slate of games on Monday, including the Rays and ace Scott Kazmir (7-5, 3.04 ERA) hosting the Athletics and Dana Eveland (7-6, 3.49 ERA). Kazmir was pressed into action last Tuesday night due to the length of the All-Star Game, so he had his first outing of the second half pushed back to Monday.

The Yankees will look to Sidney Ponson (5-1, 3.96 ERA) to pitch them past the Twins and Nick Blackburn (7-5, 3.65 ERA) at Yankee Stadium on Monday, while the Red Sox and Jon Lester (7-3, 3.38 ERA) will play on the road against the Mariners and Jarrod Washburn (4-8, 4.83 ERA). Boston has an 8-2 record over Lester's last 10 appearances.

Toronto will play in Baltimore on Monday, while Kansas City will host Detroit. The other AL games on the schedule are Texas at the Chicago White Sox, and Cleveland at the Los Angeles Angels. All-Star Ervin Santana (11-3, 3.34 ERA) gets the start for the Angels in the opener of the set, and he'll take on the Tribe's Paul Byrd (3-10, 5.47 ERA).

      Six-pack for Monday

A thumbnail look at 2008 Sun Belt football season.......

Arkansas State-- Lost six 4-year starters on defense; have a new nickname (Red Wolves) and a whole new secondary.

Florida Atlantic-- Have 18 starters back from team that won first bowl in school history; will they handle expectations?

Florida International-- Growing pains being hampered by the 4-year probation, but they're slowly improving. Very slowly.

Louisiana-Lafayette-- Lost 38-17 to I-AA team, went 3-9, so defense has to improve. Coach has improved academic end of the program, but he better win soon, or it won't matter.

Louisiana-Monroe-- They beat Alabama last year, still didn't crack top 100 in country (6-6, 102nd); have 3-year starter at QB, so these War Hawks could be a bowl-bound group.

Middle Tennessee-- Will only have 74 scholarship players in 2008, so depth is an issue; they've only got ten seniors on squad. Four new starters on offensive line could be problem.

North Texas-- Eight wins in last three years is bad; giving up 45 ppg LY was worse. Coach Dodge went 79-1 in high school ranks; his son Riley will be the QB, either sooner or later.

Troy-- Lost 38-32 to FAU, which cost them bowl bid; but its win over Oklahoma State and 44-34 loss to Georgia earned a lot of respect. Have seven starters back on both sides of ball.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

        13) When Arizona coughed up a 4-1 lead in last inning Sunday they slipped into a tie for first with Dodgers (48-50). Colorado is now only six games out of first place and they're hot, well as long as they don't have to go on the road, they'll be hot.

        12) I'm confused; the Reds have lot of good players, a pretty good nucleus to build on, but they fired their GM back at the start of the season. This guy wasn't doing a good job? Seems to me he did a damn good job.

        11) Rick Ankiel is underappreciated for what he has done; for a guy to be such a washout as a pitcher, then return to bigs and be an outstanding outfielder is an incredible feat.

        10) First play of Padre-Cardinal game Sunday was a disputed home run call that the umps eventually got right, but once the instant replay system is in, those calls will never be missed. It appeared that they pretty much guessed right Sunday.

        9) Tigers are 20-7 vs lefty starters, 29-42 vs righties, which is bad news, since obviously there are more righties starting.

        8) Interesting to see if the Angels make any moves before the end of July, seeing as they're going to coast to AL West title. They're rumored to be interested in Mark Teixeira.

        7) 57 degrees and 37 mph winds; now that's a summer vacation place to go to. No one should be wearing a parka in July. Some day, I'll understand why people go on vacation in England.

        6) Padraig Harrington is cousin of Falcons' QB Joey and pro poker player Dan Harrington.

        5) Watching Knicks in summer league in Vegas, they said you can get a season ticket for Knick games for $25 a pop, which is not a bad deal, even if they are nosebleed seats. If I lived in an NBA city, I'd shell out $25 a game to watch some ball. Hell, I think it costs $16 or $17 to watch AHL hockey here in Albany

        4) Cliff Lee tossed another complete game for Cleveland; too bad he's having such a great season for such a poor team.

        3) Braves are 6-22 in one-run games; if they were .500 (14-14), they'd be in first place in NL East.

        2) Was reading how Pirates are looking to trade Xavier Nady and Jason Bay; when exactly are they ever going to be better? How does trading those two improve them? You'd think they would want to keep good, young players.

        1) No surprise the Dolphins traded Jason Taylor; Bill Parcells wasn't going to keep a guy who blew off the conditioning stuff in off-season to be on a TV dance show. Wasn't happening.

          SCOREBOARD

          Monday, July 21

Chicago Cubs at Arizona (9:40 p.m. EDT). Rich Harden makes his second start for the Cubs when the NL Central leaders take on Randy Johnson (6-7) and the Diamondbacks.

          STARS

          Sunday

-Willie Harris, Nationals, had five RBIs and reached base five times as Washington set a season high for runs in a 15-6 rout of Atlanta.

-Jose Reyes, Mets, had four hits and scored three runs in New York's 7-5, 10-inning win over Cincinnati.

-Justin Verlander, Tigers, came within an out of completing a three-hitter in Detroit's 5-1 win over Baltimore.

-Alex Rios, Blue Jays, homered and hit two doubles to help Toronto beat Tampa Bay 9-4.

-Matt Holliday, Rockies, hit his 16th home run and had three hits in Colorado's 11-3 win over Pittsburgh.

-Ryan Braun, Brewers, drove in a career-high five runs in Milwaukee's 7-4 victory over San Francisco.

          40-SOMETHING

Francisco Rodriguez became the fastest pitcher to 40 saves in big league history when he closed out the Los Angeles Angels' 5-3 victory over Boston. Rodriguez, who struck out the side in the ninth inning, reached 40 saves in 98 games - 10 faster than John Smoltz did five years ago.

          INJURED

Chicago White Sox slugger Jermaine Dye left the game early against the Kansas City Royals after getting hit in the right knee by a pitch. Royals reliever Horacio Ramirez hit Dye with a pitch in the fourth inning. Dye fell to the ground in obvious pain. He was helped off the field by two trainers. The team said Dye has a bruised right knee. X-rays were negative and he is day-to-day. ... Seattle's Carlos Silva left his start with lower back tightness after allowing four runs in three-plus innings to Cleveland. ... Philadelphia right fielder Geoff Jenkins bruised his shoulder when he was hit by the barrel of his broken bat. Jenkins came out of a game at Florida but is expected to be ready for the start of the Phillies' series Tuesday against the New York Mets.

          SWITCHING TEAMS

Ray Durham wore a Giants uniform for the last time, then packed up his locker and went to join the Milwaukee Brewers on the other side of the ballpark before leaving town with his new team. San Francisco traded the veteran second baseman to the Brewers for two minor leaguers, with both clubs waiting until after the teams played Sunday to announce the swap. That, in fact, was per Durham's request as he didn't want to suit up for his first game for Milwaukee against the Giants. "Personally it was out of respect for the guys in this locker room,'' Durham said, saying his goodbyes in the Giants' clubhouse. "It really was a stipulation I asked for.''

          SUNDAY SCHOOLED

Baltimore lost 5-1 to Justin Verlander and Detroit, the Orioles' 15th consecutive Sunday loss. Baltimore's 15-game skid on Sundays is the longest on any given day since Arizona dropped 15 in a row on Saturdays in 2004, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Baltimore has been outscored 81-41 in Sunday games since winning its first one of the season, at home against Seattle.

          ROAD TO GLORY

Ryan Dempster struck out seven in eight shutout innings to earn his first road victory in two years and the Cubs snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-0 win over Houston. Dempster (11-4) allowed six hits, all singles, and got his first road win since June 2, 2006, at St. Louis. He's 10-1 in 12 starts at Wrigley Field this season, but was 0-3 with a 4.03 ERA in eight starts away from home before Sunday. "Such a relief,'' Dempster said with a smile. "All the questions can stop now.''

          MR. CLUTCH

Aaron Miles' grand slam in the ninth inning, the first game-ending hit of his career, helped St. Louis beat San Diego 9-5. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Miles has only seven homers in three seasons with the Cardinals. "That's a feeling I wasn't sure I was going to get to experience, that walk-off homer,'' Miles said. "I've never done it before, not in the minor leagues or on any field. That's a great feeling.''

          ROLE REVERSAL

Casey Kotchman hit a two-run double to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat Boston 5-3 for their fifth straight victory. The Angels also completed their first three-game sweep of the Red Sox in seven years. Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter homered on consecutive pitches for the Angels, who became the first team to 60 wins. They improved to 5-1 against the defending World Series champions, clinching their first season series against Boston since 2001.

          BOOED

Jason Isringhausen of St. Louis blew another save in a 9-5 win over San Diego. After Troy Glaus' three-run homer off Heath Bell in the eighth gave the Cardinals a two-run lead, the Padres rallied against Isringhausen, who blew his eighth save in 19 chances. He was booed by a sellout crowd after allowing three straight one-out hits, including an RBI double by Edgar Gonzalez. Isringhausen got the shot at his first save since May 5 because replacement closer Ryan Franklin, who is 14-for-18, needed a day off after a two-inning save on Saturday. "No matter how much a veteran he is, he's trying to do more,'' manager Tony La Russa said. "And today, it was less.''

          11-HITTER

Cleveland's Cliff Lee gave up 11 hits in a complete game and the Indians beat the Mariners 6-2. He became the first Indians pitcher to yield at least 11 hits in a complete-game win since Charles Nagy, who gave up 13 against Baltimore on June 17, 1992, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

          SPEAKING

"I don't like the way they were hitting my players. They hit six guys this week and all of a sudden the umpires give a warning. I was kind of upset about it.'' - White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen about being warned after a Chicago pitcher threw inside to Billy Butler of Kansas City. Jermaine Dye was hit by a pitch for the second straight game and left the game earlier.

          SEASONS

          July 21

1921 - The Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees combined for an AL record 16 doubles as the Indians won 17-8. Cleveland had nine doubles and New York seven.

1945 - The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics battled 24 innings and ended in a 1-1 tie. Les Mueller pitched 19 2-3 innings for the Tigers.

1956 - Brooks Lawrence of the Cincinnati Reds had his 13-game winning streak broken as Roberto Clemente's three-run homer led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory.

1970 - San Diego's Clay Kirby held the New York Mets hitless for eight innings but was lifted for a pinch hitter by manager Preston Gomez. With the Padres trailing 1-0 with two out in the eighth, Gomez elected to go for the win instead of letting Kirby finish the game. The Padres lost the no-hitter and the game, 3-0.

1973 - Hank Aaron of Atlanta hit his 700th home run in the third inning of an 8-4 Braves loss to Philadelphia. Aaron connected on a 1-1 fastball off Phillies pitcher Ken Brett.

1975 - Joe Torre of the New York Mets grounded into four double plays in a 6-2 loss to the Houston Astros. Felix Millan had four singles but was wiped out each time by Torre.

2001 - In their highest-scoring game in 58 years, the Los Angeles Dodgers routed Colorado 22-7. The 22 runs were the most scored by the Dodgers since Brooklyn beat Pittsburgh 23-6 on July 10, 1943, at Ebbets Field.

2006 - Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player to reach 450 home runs when he homered in the New York Yankees' 7-3 loss to Toronto. Rodriguez also recorded his 2000th career hit.

Today's birthdays: CC Sabathia 28; Geoff Jenkins 34.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals [ESPN | 7:05 PM ET]

Brewers: Scott McClung hasn't recorded a victory since June 21 but he's pitched well in his last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less seven times. In his last two outings, McClung has only given up five runs but took the loss both times. He's been solid on the road this season, going 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA in four starts. Teams are only hitting .237 against McClung on the road as well. The UNDER is 5-2 in McClung's last seven starts.

Brewers are 7-3 in their last 10 Monday games.
The OVER is 8-1 in Milwaukee's last 9 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals (-125, O/U 9): Joel Pineiro has only one win in his last 10 outings. He's been particularly bad of late, allowing 36 hits and 17 runs over his last 24.2 innings of work. Teams are hitting .282 against Pineiro at Busch Stadium, although his home ERA is a solid 3.56 on the season. After losing six consecutive games with Pineiro on the mound, the Cardinals have emerged victorious in his three most recent starts.

Cardinals are 6-1 in their last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in St. Louis' last 8 games as a home favorite.

Key Injuries - OF Brian Barton (.246; hand) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Texas Rangers at Chicago White Sox [8:11 PM ET]

Rangers: Eric Hurley is coming off his first career win in an outing against the Phillies where he allowed only one run in 5.2 innings. However, that came back on June 29th, and he is coming off a hamstring injury that sidelined him until now. The Rangers had lost Hurley's previous three starts but he's pitched well overall, giving up a total of just nine runs in 22.2 innings of work this season. The UNDER is 3-1 in Hurley's four starts, including cashing in three straight games.

Rangers are 2-8 in their last 10 Monday games.
The OVER is 7-1 in Texas' last 8 Monday games.

Key Injuries - OF Josh Hamilton (.309; rest) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-160, O/U 9.5): Javier Vazquez has been hammered over his last seven starts. During that span he's allowed five runs or more five times. In his last four outings Vazquez has two losses and two no-decisions while giving up 19 runs in 25 innings of work. The good news for White Sox backers tonight is Vazquez has been solid at home, sporting a 5-2 record and 4.42 ERA in nine starts this season. The OVER is 3-1 in Vazquez's last four home starts.

White Sox are 12-4 in their last 16 home games.
The OVER is 7-1 in Vazquez's last 8 home starts.

Key Injuries - OF Jermaine Dye (.310; knee) is doubtful.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Cubs (-135, O/U 8): Rich Harden gets his second start for the Cubs after pitching five strong shutout innings against the Giants in his first outing with Chicago. Harden also struck out 10 but received a no-decision. Harden has been one of the most consistent pitchers in MLB this season. He's only allowed more than three runs once in 14 starts. In five road starts, Harden is 2-1 with a strong 3.38 ERA, while opposing batters are hitting just .235 against him.

Cubs are 3-7 in their last 10 games following a win.
Cubs are 7-25 in the last 32 meetings at Arizona.

Key Injuries - Closer Kerry Wood (24 saves; finger) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Diamondbacks: After losing six straight starts, Randy Johnson has bounced back and won two outings in a row. In his last two starts, Johnson has allowed five runs in 12.1 innings of work, while striking out 13. The Big Unit is 4-3 at home this season but he's been far from imposing, sporting a lofty 6.43 ERA. Even though Johnson has pitched better of late, the OVER has cashed in two of his last three starts. He is a perfect 12-0 lifetime vs. Chicago with a stellar 1.98 ERA.

Diamondbacks are 5-17 in their last 22 games as an underdog.
Diamondbacks are 2-8 in Johnson's last 10 starts overall.

Key Injuries - OF Justin Upton (.242; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners [NESN | 10:10 PM ET]

Red Sox (-135, O/U 9): Jon Lester hasn't lost a decision since May 25 but he's been shaky in two of his last three outings. Sandwiched in between a nine-inning gem versus the Yankees, Lester gave up a combined 11 runs against Houston and Minnesota. The Red Sox have been money when Lester takes the hill, going 13-7 overall in his starts this season, including 7-1 in his last eight. In 10 road starts this year, Lester is 3-2 with a 3.92 ERA but teams are hitting a robust .274 against him away from Fenway Park.

Red Sox are 2-10 in their last 12 road games.
Red Sox are 3-11 in the last 14 meetings at Seattle.

Key Injuries - SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mariners: Jarrod Washburn is 2-1 with a no-decision in his last four starts, allowing 11 runs in 27.2 innings over that span. Washburn has actually pitched pretty well in his last 10 starts, giving up three runs or less seven times. Despite pitching well during that stretch, Washburn has only two wins to show for his efforts because of poor run support. Washburn's last three home starts have gone UNDER the total.

Mariners are 3-8 in their last 11 games overall.
Mariners are 2-6 in their last 8 Monday games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                MLB

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Monday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                Streaking

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels (11-3, 3.34)

Santana is putting together the best season of his young MLB career and he has the numbers to prove it. The fourth-year starter is 3-0 with a 3.43 ERA in his past five starts and is coming off a 10-strikeout shutout triumph over the Oakland Athletics.

Santana ranks third in the AL with 122 strikeouts and has at least six in each of his last seven starts. In his last home start, the righty surrendered just two earned runs and retired seven in a 5-3 triumph against the A's.

LA is 4-1 in Santana's last five starts against AL Central opponents and is 35-16 in his last 51 starts at Angels Stadium.

                Slumping

Luke Hochevar, Kansas City (6-7, 5.10)

Hochevar has struggled in his second MLB season. The right-hander is 1-2 in his last three starts with a 7.41 ERA in 17 IP. Hochevar has conceded 14 ERs and one HR in that period.

Hochevar is 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA in seven-career starts in KC and has just three triumphs in his last 10 overall outings.

Kansas City is 1-5 in its last six home games against a right-handed starter and is 1-4 in Hochevar's last five starts after a Quality Start.

Runelvys Hernandez, Houston Astros (0-3, 10.29)

Hernandez has been throwing trash since he stepped of the plane in Houston. The longtime Royals pitcher is winless in his first three starts, including a recent loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in which he surrendered 13 hits, 10 earned runs and two homers in four IP.

Hernandez' last played in the big leagues in 2006 and finished the season with a 6-10 record and a lofty 6.48 ERA. The right-hander is also 0-1 with a 22.50 ERA in one career start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Houston is 6-13 in its last 19 against the NL Central and is 1-4 in its last five against the Pirates.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (0-3, 7.0)

Bailey isn't exactly turning heads in his second MLB season. In four starts, the right-hander is 0-3 with a lofty 7.00 ERA and 1.72 WHIP.

Bailey is 0-2 at home with an astronomical 15.00 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. In his last two home starts he has surrendered 10 earned runs in a mere 5.3 IP.

The Reds are 0-4 in Bailey's last four starts and are 1-4 in their last five matches against the San Diego Padres.

                            Detroit at Kansas City (-115, 9 1/2)

Zach Miner is getting another chance to crack Detroit's five-man rotation today. The Tigers recalled the 26-year-old from Triple-A Toledo to make his first start of the season, but the team isn't promising anything past today's game even though they could use a healthy body to eat up some innings.

Miner's a groundball pitcher who can be effective as long as his sinker is on and he's also working on a changeup to go along with a decent slider. Miner made 16 starts for the big club in 2006 and got 15 groundball outs in a complete-game victory at Milwaukee back then before he was moved to the bullpen.

                            Pick: Detroit

                            Atlanta at Florida (-120, 9)

Chris Volstad is creating some buzz after holding the Dodgers to just one run over 8 2/3 innings last week in his first big-league start. He looks like a power pitcher on the mound standing 6-foot-7, but he mostly relies on control and location, keeping the ball down in the zone.

"This kid is special," catcher Paul Hoover said of Volstad after his starting debut. "He kept them off-balance all night."

The injury-depleted Braves are still struggling as they head into this series after dropping two of three against the Nationals over the weekend. Florida, meanwhile, has won six of its last eight.

                            Pick: Florida

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3
