    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, July 20

Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, and Kimi Raikkonen sit in a three-way tie atop the standings as Formula One heads back to Europe for the German Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton made the leap into first place with a dominating win in the British Grand Prix on July 6. Hamilton, Massa, and Raikkonen now have 48 points apiece in the F1 drivers championship, with Robert Kubica just back in fourth place at 46 points on the season.

Team Ferrari (Massa and Raikkonen) continue to hold down the lead in the constructors championship; they have a 96-82 advantage on BMW Sauber (Kubica and Nick Heidfeld). Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen have McLaren-Mercedes in third place with 72 points, and they'll looking to make some headway on that list with a win in Germany.

The last time the German Grand Prix at Hockenheimring was held was in 2006, when Michael Schumacher took the checkered flag. Massa and Raikkonen ended up second and third in that race, with Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso rounding out the Top 5 . Hamilton is the oddsmakers' favorite this weekend, followed by Raikkonen and Massa.

Back in North America there's a full slate of games on the diamond on Sunday, including a big matchup in Arizona between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. Derek Lowe (7-8, 3.85 ERA) is expected to start that game for Los Angeles, while Brandon Webb (13-4, 3.23 ERA) will put his impressive won-loss record on the line for Arizona.

The other big NL matchup on Sunday sees the Phillies and Cole Hamels (9-6, 3.15 ERA) visit the division-rival Marlins and Josh Johnson (0-0, 5.40 ERA). Meanwhile, the Mets will be looking to keep pace in the NL East when they send Mike Pelfrey (8-6, 3.64 ERA) to the mound on the road against Cincinnati's Edinson Volquez (12-3, 2.29 ERA).

Rounding out the NL schedule on Sunday are Washington at Atlanta, the Cubs at Houston, San Diego at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at Colorado, Milwaukee at San Francisco.

Over in the American League the Yankees will be looking to knock off the Athletics when they send Andy Pettitte (10-7, 4.03 ERA) to the mound at home against the tough Justin Duchscherer (10-5, 1.82 ERA). Duchscherer has only allowed more than two earned runs in one of his starts so far this season, and that came way back on May 18.

The Red Sox and Angels will play the Sunday nighter this week, with Tim Wakefield (6-6, 3.60 ERA) projected to face Jon Garland (8-6, 4.20 ERA), while Cliff Lee (12-2, 2.31) will be looking for win No. 13 when he faces the M's and Carlos Silva (4-11, 5.46 ERA). Other AL games on Sunday include Detroit at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Kansas City at the White Sox (who will start John Danks), and also Texas at Minnesota.

There are three games on tap in the WNBA on Sunday, starting with Chicago at Connecticut at 1:00pm ET. The Storm and Mystics then meet in Washington later in the afternoon, while Sacramento plays a road game against East-leading Detroit in the evening. In the Canadian Football League there's one game on Sunday, with Edmonton travelling to Toronto to play the Argos. The Eskimos are 2-1 this season; Toronto is 1-2.

Finally, the British Open wraps up on Sunday, with Greg Norman (2-over) holding a two-stroke lead on both Padraig Harrington and K.J. Choi. Simon Wakefield enters Sunday three strokes back of the lead, with Anthony Kim part of a group at 7-over for the event.

      Six-pack for Sunday

-- Greg Norman is 646th-ranked golfer in a world he is trying to shock Sunday afternoon in England. Norman is already the oldest golfer since 1945 to lead major after three rounds.

-- Good job by Rams, getting Chris Long signed before the start of training camp.

-- Oklahoma City Thunder? Thats what Seattle Sonics will be called this season, after they deserted Seattle this spring.

-- Tigers scored six in top of first but lost Saturday, as their season begins to crumble even further.

-- Colorado Rockies are 42-57 but are only seven games out of first place.........

-- How lucky are the Rays that the All-Star break came? They are now 1.5 games up on Red Sox in AL East, after being left for dead last week. The Sox are only four games up on Bronx for the Wild Card.

Sunday's List of 13: Preview of 2008 Big East football race

Cincinnati-- Brian Kelly is a rising giant in coaching; he won pair of national titles in D-II, then got Central Michigan to bowl and went 10-3 in his first season with Bearcats. UC has seven starters back on offense, six on defense from unit that led the country with 42 takeaways LY. Bearcats have to break in a new QB this season, but with ten seniors starting on defense, this should be another bowl-cound team for coach Kelly.

UConn-- Huskies were 8-1 at one point LY, then lost three of its last four games, getting waxed 66-21 by West Virginia, and 24-10 by Wake Forest in Car Care Bowl, but UConn had only 10 seniors and overachieved, getting nine touchdowns from its defense and special teams. Huskies have a senior QB, depth on the offensive line and a solid coach, so expectations won't be a problem. Expect UConn to go bowling again this season.

Louisville-- 6-6 wasn't good at school that had 41 wins in four years before that, so Steve Kragthorpe's first year at UofL was not pleasant. Cardinals gave up 120 points combined in games 2-4, then gave up 131 more in its last three games, after losing in midseason at home to Utah, 44-35. They overhauled staff on defense, brought in ten JC players for depth, but they need to break in a new QB too. Looks like a rebuilding year for U of L.

Pittsburgh-- Dave Wannstedt has been recruiting like crazy, but is 16-19 in three years at Pitt, so Year 4 needs to be a good one. Panthers played good defense LY, but an injury-riddled offense turned ball over 24 times and wound with freshman QB running things-- not good. If offense doesn't give opponents a short field to work on, Pitt has enough team speed to be bowl team this season. For Wannstedt's sake, they had better be.

Rutgers-- Seven starters back on offense, eight on defense, so Rutgers figures to go bowling again in '08, hopefully to a better bowl than the International Bowl (no offense). Gone is star RB Rice and three starters on offensive line, but they have Teel as a 5th-year senior QB, so they should get more out of passing game. Knights were first team ever LY with a 2,000-yd rusher, a 3,000-yd passer and two 1,000-yard WRs. '08 should be good.

South Florida-- Bulls were ranked #2 in country at one point in a wacky season, then stumbled to 3-4 finish, but nine wins for second year in row is good stuff for USF, which has ten of its starters back on offense, including 3rd-year starting QB Matt Grothe. South Florida is a large school located in a recruiting goldmine- they're going to be good for long time. How will the weight of expectations change things? Not that much.

Syracuse-- Whoever fired Paul Pasqualoni was an idiot; SU is 7-28 in three years under Greg Robinson, and things ain't any better now than they were three years ago. AD Gross doesn't seem to know that central New York ain't Texas or USC, so it is really hard to have a great football team at Syracuse. Three of their first four games are Northwestern/Akron/Northeastern, if they ain't at least 3-1, Orange will have a new coach in 2009.

West Virginia-- They were going to have shot at national title, then a 13-9 loss to rival Pitt unraveled everything and wound up with WVU alum Rodriguez bolting for Michigan, paying lot of cash ($4M) to break his contract. New coach Stewart had an 8-25 record in three years at VMI in the mid-90's; is he ready to lead a program at this level? Mountaineers are 33-5 in last 38 games; at least they have a senior QB to lead them in 2008.

Edmonton Eskimos (2-1) at Toronto Argonauts (1-2) (Toronto -3 1/2)

Against all odds, Edmonton won against Toronto last week 47-28, easily covering the 2 ½-point underdog spread. With a combined 75 points, the game also went way over the posted total.

Ricky Ray completed 16 of 23 pass attempts for 213 yards and one touchdown while A.J. Harris ran for two touchdowns in that stunning win. Kerry Joseph was intercepted three times for Toronto and completed only 23 of the 40 passes he attempted for 227 yards and two touchdowns.

Joseph should be the starter once again but the decision to split duties between him and incumbent Michael Bishop was ill-fated. The Argonauts could once again fall to the Eskimos this weekend if only because Danny Maciocia keeps showing he is a much better coach than Toronto’s Rich Stubler. Even if the Argonauts manage to pull this one, they probably won’t cover the spread.

                Pick: Edmonton +3 1/2

A's: Justin Duchscherer gets an extra day of rest after Sean Gallagher went to the hill for Oakland on Saturday. Duchscherer earned a win against the Yankees back on June 11th, allowing just one run and five hits in seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts. He has not been as dominant on the road but still owns a 3-4 mark in seven starts with an impressive 2.53 ERA. The A's have won six of his last eight starts overall, including two straight away from home.

A's are 0-4 in their last 4 road games.
The UNDER is 22-6 in Oakland's last 28 games as an underdog.

Cubs (-135, O/U 8.5): Ryan Dempster will need to battle a couple of unfavorable trends in hopes of getting a victory here. Dempster is 0-3 in eight road starts with a 4.03 ERA, and he has also struggled vs. Houston during his career with a 3-8 mark and 4.94 ERA. He is also coming off his first home loss of the season against the Giants a week ago in his last start, allowing two runs and seven hits in 6.2 innings. On a positive note, Dempster did strike out the side in pitching a perfect ninth inning of Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game.

Milwaukee Brewers at San Francisco Giants [4:05 PM ET]

Brewers: The bad news is that Manny Parra has seen his team lose the last three games in which he has appeared, including two starts. The good news though is that Parra didn't suffer a loss in any of those games, as he allowed 11 hits and four earned runs in 13.1 combined innings of work. He is 3-2 in eight road starts with a 4.91 ERA and brings a 13-inning scoreless streak away from home into this start against San Francisco.

Brewers are 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.

Giants (-135, O/U 7.5): Young ace Tim Lincecum hopes to be healthy enough to make this start after battling the flu during MLB All-Star festivities earlier in the week. Lincecum was not able to pitch in the MLB All-Star Game after earning a victory at Chicago last Sunday. He allowed just one run to the Cubs in eight strong innings, walking one and striking out nine. Lincecum is 3-1 in eight home starts with a 3.23 ERA.

Red Sox: Tim Wakefield has seen his team lose five of his last six road starts despite solid pitching during that stretch. Wakefield has allowed three runs or less in his last five starts away from home yet he has earned just one win for his efforts. He is 1-4 in 11 road starts overall with a 4.04 ERA and has gone 9-11 during his career vs. LA with a 4.79 ERA.

Red Sox are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings at LA.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Angels (-120, O/U 9): Jon Garland will try to rebound from his worst start of the season when he toes the rubber against the Red Sox. Garland surrendered seven runs and 10 hits in just 2.2 innings last time out against Oakland in an eventual 9-2 loss, walking two and striking out one. He has also struggled against Boston during his career with a 4-5 mark and 5.57 ERA in 10 starts. Garland is 3-4 in 11 home starts with a 4.22 ERA.

Angels are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-2-2 in Garland's last 13 starts overall.

                      Streaking Starting Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Sunday’s streaking and slumping pitchers

                      Streaking

Mike Pelfrey, New York Mets (8-6, 3.64)

The Mets are one of the hottest teams in MLB and Pelfrey is a major reason for their success. The right-hander is 3-0 with a remarkable 0.41 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in his last three outings and is undefeated in his last nine overall starts.

Pelfrey has registered six straight wins with back-to-back shutouts over the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants. He is also 4-4 on the road this season and 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two career starts against the Cincinnati Reds.

New York is 7-0 in Pelfrey's past seven and is 7-3 in its last 10 overall against the Reds.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (7-9, 4.15)

Verlander has been lights out since starting the season with a mere two victories in 12 starts. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.0 WHIP in his past three starts and has not relinquished more than two earned runs in a contest since a June 6 loss to the Indians.

Verlander has lost just two of his last 10 contests and is a 2-0 in his last three starts outside the Motor City. He is also 1-0 with a solid 2.03 ERA in one career start against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Tigers are 6-1 in Verlander's last seven against the AL East. Detroit is also 6-1 in its last seven against the Orioles.

                      Slumping

Brian Bannister, Kansas City Royals (7-8, 5.24)

Bannister is winless in his last three starts, posting a lofty 9.92 ERA and 1.78 WHIP and has also relinquished 18 earned runs and eight walks in 15.4 IP.

The righty is 2-5 on the road with an 8.14 ERA, including a recent 11-2 loss in Tampa Bay in which he relinquished six earned runs in just five IP. He is 0-1 with 12.00 ERA in his last three starts against the Chicago White Sox.

The Royals are 1-6 in Bannister's last seven road outings and are 14-43 in their last 57 trips to the Windy City.

Vincente Padilla, Texas Rangers (3-10, 4.47)

Padilla has conceded 15 earned runs in 8.2 IP in his last two starts. He is 0-2 in that period with a 6.62 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.

Padilla is 3-3 on the road with a 4.00 ERA and is coming off an 11-4 setback to Baltimore in which he relinquished eight ERs in 2.2 IP. The right-hander has also surrendered eight HRs in his last seven outings.

The Rangers, 5-11 in their last 16 games versus the Minnesota Twins, are 2-7 in their last nine trips to the Metrodome.

                        Sunday, July 20

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Angels
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the first half of the MLB season now behind us, its time for the stretch run. Or at least sort of.

Of course the true stretch run will be coming in a few months but this is where teams begin to position themselves for that final kick to the playoffs.

Speaking of playoffs, we have two teams that fully expect to be playing in October. As of Friday afternoon, both of these teams were on top of their respective divisions. As they begin this three game series in Los Angeles, the Angels and Red Sox have the two best records in the American League.

The Halos have a fairly comfortable six game lead in the AL West over Oakland. The Red Sox, on the other hand, are clinging to a half game lead in the AL East thanks in part to Tampa Bay’s seven game losing streak leading up to the All Star break.

On Sunday night, ESPN brings us a matchup of one of the best pitchers in the American League vs. possibly the hottest pitcher in the American League.

The Angels All Star hurler Joe Saunders steps to the hill on Sunday night with a 12-5 record. Those 12 wins give him the second most wins by a starting pitcher in the majors sitting one win behind Arizona’s Brandon Webb.

Saunders has definitely been a pleasant surprise for L.A. this year. The Angels expected him to be a solid starter in the rotation, but they definitely were not looking at him as an All Star caliber pitcher.

Coming into the season Saunders had just 15 career wins and a 4.71 lifetime ERA in his three seasons in the big leagues. This year the lefty sits at 12-5 with an ERA of just 3.07. He has been eating up both right handed and left handed hitters over his last 10 outings. Lefties hit just .235 against him while right handed bats are trolling along at just .238 vs. Saunders.

He has been a cash cow for bettors as his money numbers are among the top 15 in the majors this year at +$740.

Saunders should be extremely well rested for this start as he has thrown just 12 pitches in the last 10 days. His last start was back on July 8 in Texas where he threw a complete game six-hitter but lost 3-2. He was slated to start again last Sunday, however, his wife gave birth to their first child on Saturday night so he did not make his scheduled turn. He worked one inning in the All Star game, throwing just 12 pitches on Tuesday for his latest action.

As good as Saunders has been this year, perhaps the hottest pitcher in baseball will be his opposition on Sunday night. Veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield has been extraordinary his last nine outings.

Wakefield has allowed just 15 earned runs in his last nine starts for an ERA of just over 2.00. Over his last 10 starts, he has been embarrassing opposing hitters with regularity. Left-handed batters have hit just .208 vs. Wakefield while righties have not fared much better at .223.

He has pitched at least seven innings in eight of his last nine starts giving some relief to the BoSox bullpen. His most recent start on July 12 might have been his best. Wakefield allowed just one run on only two hits in his 12-1 win over Baltimore last Saturday. He didn’t allow a base runner in the final 13 batters he faced prompting Boston manager Terry Francona to say it might be the best he’s ever seen Wakefield pitch.

With both starters clipping along at a run-stopping pace you can probably expect this game to be low scoring. The Angels have been an “under” team all season as over 61 percent of their games in 2008 have slipped below the posted total.

Before Friday’s series opener, the Angels over/under record is 34-54-7 favoring the “under”. In fact, only two teams in MLB have fewer “overs” than the Angels and those are the Yankees and Braves.

Despite being the second best hitting team in the majors at .280, the Sox have also struggled to push games over the total. Starting this huge series, Boston stood at 42-45-10 favoring the “under”.

This one will be interesting. The Angels are by far the best road team in the big leagues with a record of 31-18. The problem is, this one is in L.A. where they are “just” 26-20.

Boston, on the other hand, has been lights-out at home with a record of 36-11. Their road record has left a lot to be desired, however at 21-29. Something has to give when two of the best teams in baseball square off on ESPN Sunday night.

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Oakland at N.Y. Yankees (-150, 8)

After squandering multiple opportunities before being gifted a victory, the New York Yankees may have to make the most of limited chances Sunday when they face Justin Duchscherer in a bid to sweep a three-game series from the Oakland Athletics.

The Yankees (52-45) stranded 21 baserunners and went 3-for-18 with men in scoring position Saturday, but still eked out a 12-inning, 4-3 victory - their season-best sixth straight home win - in 12 innings. Jose Molina was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home Derek Jeter with the winning run.

"It feels good because we won the game, but it hurts," Molina said.

By comparison, New York had gone 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position in Friday's 7-1 win.

Duchscherer (10-5, 1.82 ERA) has been pitching at a high level for nearly two months, allowing two runs or fewer in 10 consecutive starts - compiling a 7-2 record with a 1.44 ERA in that span. The right-hander, who allowed one run in one inning during Tuesday's All-Star game, failed to get a decision last Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels despite limiting them to two runs in 7 2/3 innings. Oakland lost the game 4-3.

Duchscherer won his first-ever start against the Yankees on June 11, yielding one run in seven innings of an 8-4 victory. He is 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA in eight total appearances versus New York, spanning 15 innings.

                              Pick: A's

                              N.Y. Mets at Cincinnati (-130, 9)

Volquez allowed three runs only once in his first 15 starts, but had done so in three consecutive outings prior to his last start. He shut down the Milwaukee Brewers on July 12, giving up two runs - one earned - in seven innings while striking out 10 in the Reds' 8-2 win.

"I think it was one of the great nights for me," Volquez told the Reds' official Web site. "All my pitches were there."

Volquez hasn't faced the Mets yet in his first season in the NL.

His mound opponent isn't an All-Star, but Mike Pelfrey (8-6, 3.64) has pitched like one over the last month. Pelfrey lost six straight starts earlier this season, but he's won the last six times he's taken the hill.

Pelfrey has been especially good in his three starts during July, when he's gone 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA. He hasn't allowed a run in his last two outings, and went eight innings in the Mets' 7-0 win over Colorado last Sunday, with the Shea Stadium crowd chanting his name as he worked out of a jam in the eighth.

                              Pick: Under
