    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, July 19

Josh Beckett and Joe Saunders have combined for 21 wins so far this year, and they'll be trying to get the better of each other when the BoSox and Angels clash on Saturday.

Beckett (9-5, 3.94 ERA) will need to step up his pace if he wants to win 20 games for the second straight season. The righthander got a gift of a victory last time out, after he was knocked around for five earned runs on eight hits over five innings of work. The Red Sox bailed out Beckett in that contest, scoring 18 runs in the victory over the Twins.

Beckett is 5-2 with three no-decisions over his last 10 starts, and Boston has picked up six wins over than span. On the season Beckett has walked just 24 while fanning 107.

Saunders (12-5, 3.07 ERA) is coming off an appearance in Tuesday's marathon All-Star Game; he pitched a scoreless third inning for the American League, giving up one hit. The lefthander was beaten by the Rangers in his last start before the break, surrendering three earned runs on six hits over eight innings of work, and fanning five.

In his last 10 starts Saunders is 6-4, and he's given up three or more earned runs just three times over that period. Saunders made a start against the Red Sox back on April 24, grabbing the win after giving up three earned runs on seven hits over his six innings.

Toronto's Roy Halladay (11-6, 2.71 ERA) will toss a road game against Tampa Bay's Matt Garza (7-5, 3.96 ERA) on Saturday. Halladay also pitched in Tuesday's All-Star Game, fanning one in a scoreless fourth inning. Scott Kazmir was originally scheduled to pitch for the Rays against Halladay, but the team instead decided to push him back.

Other AL matchups on tap for Saturday include Oakland at New York, Cleveland at Seattle, Detroit at Baltimore, and Texas at Minnesota. As well, Gavin Floyd (10-5, 3.63 ERA) will be looking to pitch the ChiSox past Gil Meche (6-9, 4.71 ERA) and the Royals.
Over in the NL the Brewers and the Cubs will both send their aces to the mound on Saturday. Milwaukee's Ben Sheets (10-3, 2.85 ERA) will take on the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez (8-5, 3.97 ERA) in San Francisco, while Chicago's Carlos Zambrano (10-3, 2.84 ERA) will take the mound in Houston against Wandy Rodriguez (4-3, 3.48 ERA). Sheets and Zambrano each pitched a pair of shutout frames during the All-Star Game.

The NL Central's other contender, the Cardinals, will continue their home series against San Diego on Saturday, with Todd Wellemeyer (7-4, 4.04 ERA) taking on Randy Wolf (9-6, 4.66 ERA). Other NL games Saturday include Philadelphia at Florida, Washington at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at Colorado, the Mets at Cincinnati, and the Dodgers at Arizona. Chad Billingsley (9-8, 3.25 ERA) will face Dan Haren (8-5, 2.72 ERA) in that last game.

There are four WNBA games slated for Saturday, with Indiana at New York, Minnesota at San Antonio, Los Angeles at Houston, and Atlanta at Phoenix. Meanwhile, up in the Canadian Football League it'll be Montreal at Saskatchewan at 7:00pm ET. The Als are 2-1 (and 2-1 ATS) this year, while the Riders are a perfect 3-0 both straight up and ATS.

And early risers will be focused on the British Open on Saturday morning. K.J. Choi holds a one-streak lead on the surprising Greg Norman heading into the tournament's third round. Camilo Villegas, who was 5-under on Friday, sits two strokes back of the leader at 1-over for the event. Rocco Mediate, Graeme McDowell, Jim Furyk, Robert Allenby, Alexander Noren, Padraig Harrington, and David Duval all enter play at 2-over.

            Preview and Predictions

            CFL games – Week 4

            Saturday, July 19

Montreal Alouettes (2-1) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-0) (Saskatchewan -5 1/2)

Marc Trestman’s new playbook can be dazzling offensively but the Stampeders showed last week it can also be neutralized.

The defending champ Riders may not be as powerful as they where last year when led by QB Kerry Joseph, but on the defensive side of the game they are still quite dominant. Montreal will have difficulty moving the chains and putting points on the scoreboard.

Without Marcus Crandell, the Roughriders have seen Darian Durant take over with lots of poise as he completed 23 of 33 pass attempts for 347 yards and one touchdown against Hamilton last week. Wes Cates carried the ball 15 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Against Calgary, the Alouettes relied heavily on Anthony Calvillo’s arm. The veteran QB completed 21 passes with 341 yards and touchdown in their loss to Calgary. If the Alouettes can’t get Avon Cobourne to run more often with the ball, it could be a very long night for Montreal. Expect the Roughriders to remain undefeated.

            Pick: Saskatchewan -5 1/2

            Sunday, July 20

Edmonton Eskimos (2-1) at Toronto Argonauts (1-2) (Toronto -3 1/2)

Against all odds, Edmonton won against Toronto last week 47-28, easily covering the 2 ½-point underdog spread. With a combined 75 points, the game also went way over the posted total.

Ricky Ray completed 16 of 23 pass attempts for 213 yards and one touchdown while A.J. Harris ran for two touchdowns in that stunning win. Kerry Joseph was intercepted three times for Toronto and completed only 23 of the 40 passes he attempted for 227 yards and two touchdowns.

Joseph should be the starter once again but the decision to split duties between him and incumbent Michael Bishop was ill-fated. The Argonauts could once again fall to the Eskimos this weekend if only because Danny Maciocia keeps showing he is a much better coach than Toronto’s Rich Stubler. Even if the Argonauts manage to pull this one, they probably won’t cover the spread.

            Pick: Edmonton +3 1/2

              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Florida Marlins [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick has seen his teammates win eight of his last 10 starts, and he has also done his part by allowing less than five runs eight times during that stretch. Kendrick has walked away with no-decisions in each of his last two outings, giving up a combined five runs and 17 hits in 12.1 innings. He has been especially tough on the road this season, going 5-1 in 10 starts with a 4.29 ERA.

Phillies are 9-1 in their last 10 games as an underdog.

The UNDER is 7-2 in Philadelphia's last 9 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - OF Geoff Jenkins (.237; elbow) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Marlins (-115, O/U 9): Scott Olsen will face a nemesis of his here in the Phillies, as he is just 3-5 in 10 career starts against them with a lofty 5.33 ERA. Olsen lost to them back on June 12th despite allowing only one earned run in seven innings because he was on the wrong end of a 3-0 shutout pitched by Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer. He has been solid at home this season, going 3-3 in 11 starts with a 2.96 ERA.

The OVER is 38-16-5 in Florida's last 59 games on grass.

Key Injuries - SS Hanley Ramirez (.311; shoulder) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Padres: San Diego has lost five of the last six times Randy Wolf has gone to the mound even though he hasn't pitched that poorly during that stretch. Wolf has seen the Padres score three runs or less in five of those outings while they scored 10 in the victory. However, there's no hiding the fact that he has struggled on the road, where he is just 1-5 in nine starts with a 6.66 ERA.

Padres are 9-29 in the last 38 meetings at St. Louis.
The UNDER is 10-3 in San Diego's last 13 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals (-155, O/U 9): Todd Wellemeyer has simply struggled since his return from the DL on June 26th, as St. Louis has lost all four of his starts after going 4-1 in his previous five. Wellemeyer has given up 25 hits and 13 runs in his last three starts combined, walking three and striking out seven. He is 5-4 in nine home starts with a 4.83 ERA.

Cardinals are 4-1 in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in St. Louis' last 9 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - OF Brian Barton (.246; hand) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels [NESN | 10:05 PM ET]

Red Sox: Josh Beckett has suffered just one loss in his last eight trips to the mound, and he also brings a perfect 2-0 career mark and 2.16 ERA in four starts against the Angels into this meeting. Beckett has been the beneficiary of great run support in his wins this season, as Boston has scored an average of 8.6 runs the nine times he has earned a victory. He is 4-4 in 10 road starts with a 3.31 ERA.

Red Sox are 2-8 in their last 10 road games.
Red Sox are 23-8 in their last 31 Saturday games.

Key Injuries - SS Julio Lugo (.268; quad) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Angels (-155, O/U 8): Like Beckett, Joe Saunders has never suffered a loss against his opponent in today's game, going 3-0 lifetime vs. Boston with a 2.92 ERA in four starts. Saunders is also 6-2 in nine home starts for the Angels with a 3.92 ERA and will be making his first start for the team since the birth of his first child. He has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last five outings overall.

Angels are 9-3 in their last 12 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings.

Key Injuries - 3B Chone Figgins (.275; personal) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox [WGN | 7:05 PM ET]

Royals: Gil Meche will try to earn a win for the first time in four starts and get some revenge from a rough outing at Chicago back on June 5th. Meche has walked away with no-decisions in each of his last two outings, both of which resulted in wins for Kansas City. He surrendered five runs and eight hits in 5.2 innings against the White Sox in the last meeting, falling to 6-3 with a 4.38 ERA during his career vs. Chicago. Meche is 3-5 in 10 road starts this season with a 4.21 ERA.

Royals are 14-43 in the last 57 meetings at Chicago.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Meche's last 8 road starts.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-110, O/U 8.5): Gavin Floyd has been outstanding at U.S. Cellular Field this season, going 7-1 in 10 starts there with a 2.57 ERA. Chicago has won his last six home starts, and opponents are hitting just .172 against Floyd at the Cell. However, he will be looking to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season, as he surrendered six runs and five hits in 2.2 innings of a 7-2 loss at Texas last Friday. He is 1-1 lifetime vs.KC with a 3.00 ERA.

White Sox are 12-2 in their last 14 home games.
White Sox are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - Closer Bobby Jenks (18 saves; shoulder) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                  SCOREBOARD

                  Saturday, July 19

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona (8:10 p.m. EDT). Chad Billingsley (9-8) faces Dan Haren (8-5).

                  STARS

                  Friday

                  - Garret Anderson, Angels, was 4-for-4 with a go-ahead solo homer and five RBIs, leading the Los Angeles to an 11-3 victory over the Red Sox.

                  - Ben Zobrist and James Shields, Rays. Zobrist hit a two-run homer and Shields allowed one run over seven innings to help Tampa Bay snap a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays.

                  - Luke Scott, Orioles, homered twice in a 7-4 victory over Detroit.

                  - Hunter Pence, Astros, drove in the game-winning run with a double off Bob Howry in bottom of the ninth inning and gave Houston a 2-1 victory over the Cubs.

                  - Raul Ibanez, Mariners, hit a grand slam and had two other hits in Seattle's 8-2 win over Cleveland.

                  - James Loney, Dodgers, homered leading off the 11th inning to lift Los Angeles to an 8-7 victory over the Diamondbacks.

                  IMMEDIATE PAYOFF

Richie Sexson hit an RBI single in his first at-bat with the Yankees. The Yankees signed the big first baseman who was released by Seattle last week. Sexson slumped badly against right-handed pitching with the Mariners, but hit .344 with five home runs in 71 at-bats against lefties this year.

                  LOSING

Greg Maddux allowed six runs in four innings of San Diego's 11-7 loss to St. Louis, the shortest outing for the 42-year-old right-hander since last September. He is 0-5 in 13 starts since May 16, tying the longest victory drought of his career, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                  SURGE STOPPED

The Mets' 10-game winning streak ended with a 5-2 loss to the Reds.

                  BACK ON TRACK

The Rays ended their seven-game skid with a 2-1 win over Toronto on Friday night. Six of Tampa Bay's losses during the skid came on the road. Friday's victory improved the Rays' home record to 37-14.

                  READY?

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz hit his second homer in as many games of his minor league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. Ortiz, out of the lineup since May 30, is recovering from a wrist injury.

                  RUN, SETH, RUN

Seth Smith hit an inside-the-park home run to lead Colorado to a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh. It was the 11th inside-the-park home run in Rockies history and second this season. Jeff Baker had one against Cleveland on June 17. It was the seventh inside-the-park home run hit in Coors Field history.

                  SMALL BALL

The Reds scored four times in the fifth off Mets starter John Maine despite getting only two balls out of the infield. Ken Griffey Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk, Brandon Phillips lofted a two-run single into shallow right field, and Edwin Encarnacion got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cincinnati beat the Mets 5-2.

                  STRONG IN DEFEAT

Ivan Rodriguez went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs for the Tigers in a 7-4 loss to Baltimore.

                  UNDER THE KNIFE

Reds outfielder Ryan Freel will have surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn tendon that attaches to the bottom of his right hamstring. Freel went on the disabled list on June 4 after he injured the hamstring. It's unclear how long he will need to recover from the surgery.

                  STATS

Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer pitched six strong innings to beat Florida for the 10th time in 10 career starts against them. ... Chicago's first eight batters reached base with seven singles - including five straight at one point - and a hit batsman. The White Sox beat the Royals 9-5. ... Anaheim's John Lackey recorded his 1,000th strikeout when he fanned Boston's Kevin Youkilis in the fourth inning of an 11-3 win. ... Nomar Garciaparra had his first multihomer game since August 4, 2002, for the Boston Red Sox against Texas.

                  SPEAKING

"It's not an error, but I think I made the bloopers for life. I had a bad jump, but I still went for it. I missed the ball and that was it. I felt like I was swimming in a swamp right there.'' - Boston's Manny Ramirez on his futile dive for a ball he had no chance of catching in the Red Sox's 11-3 loss to Anaheim.

1994 - The Kingdome, home of the Seattle Mariners, was closed after four ceiling tiles fell nearly 180 feet into the stands behind home plate. The Mariners were forced into a 22-day road trip before the season was cut short by the players' strike.

2001 - Randy Johnson struck out 16, a major league record for a reliever, and came within four outs of combining with Curt Schilling on a no-hitter as Arizona beat San Diego 3-0 in the completion of their suspended game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona (-130, 7 1/2)

Let me tell you something about Dan Haren: he doesn't lose at home. Well, he rarely loses anywhere but the big right-hander is 7-2 in Phoenix and if you're going to put your money down on the D-Backs, you'd be well-advised to wait for a home game. Although Haren has been lights out at all venues, it helps when a team that hits .249 overall can crank that offense up to .277 at home.

The Diamondbacks played the Dodgers in a series in Phoenix earlier this spring and it didn't go so well for Dodgers backers. The D-Backs swept the series by a total score of 23-11. No contest. These two teams are in a dead heat for the NL West lead so it could get ugly, and I like the scrappy Diamondbacks in a tough series.

                      Pick: Diamondbacks

                      Texas at Minnesota (-111, 10 1/2)

Sometimes betting doesn't have to be complicated. For example, check out this simple equation. The Minnesota Twins are unstoppable at home. This club has gone 33-18 in its Metrodome outings and have racked up more than 15 units in those games. Why are they winning so much at home? Who knows. But the important thing is that we capitalize on the trend

As a club, the Twins are hitting .288 in Minneapolis, but the really mind-blowing thing is that the bullpen - which has a mediocre 3.85 ERA overall - has an amazing 1.95 ERA in home games. Whether it's home cooking, the Metrodome clubhouse setup, or something else, you can't bet against the Twins at home. Particularly after they handed the Rangers their first shutout of the season last night.

                      Pick: Twins

                        Streaking Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays (11-6, 2.71)

Halladay continues to intimidate his opponents, despite suiting up for the lowly Blue Jays. The righty ranks eighth in MLB and fifth in the AL with a 2.71 ERA. He is also 3-0 and has a stunning 0.72 ERA along with 21 strikeouts in his last three outings.

In his last start, a shutout victory over the New York Yankees, Halladay lasted a full nine innings, relinquishing just two hits. The Doctor is also 7-2 with a solid 3.02 ERA at Tropicana Field.

Toronto is 5-1 in Halladay's last six road starts and is 7-1 in Halladay's last eight starts against Tampa Bay.

                        Slumping

Todd Wellemeyer, St. Louis Cardinals (7-4, 4.04)

Wellemeyer hasn't had much success as of late. In his last three starts, the righty is 0-2 with a lofty 7.16 ERA and 1.27 WHIP.

He is 1-4 in his last five home starts and is 5-4 with a 4.83 ERA in nine contests this season at Busch Stadium. In his last home start, a 7-1 loss to the Cubs, the veteran relinquished nine hits and three earned runs in a meager five IP.

St. Louis is also winless in Wellemeyer's past five starts.

Jeremy Sowers, Cleveland Indians (0-5, 7.51)

Sowers can't get the winless monkey off his back. In fact, he hasn't tasted victory since May 24, 2007. He is coming off a decent showing against the Devil Rays, but tossed 93 pitches in a mere four innings in the process.

The left-hander is 0-2 with an 11.37 ERA in his last three tilts and is 0-4 with an equally lofty 9.51 ERA this campaign outside Progressive Field.

The Tribe is 17-35 in its last 52 road tilts and is 0-6 in Sowers' last six outside Progressive Field.
