  • my thoughts on waynes report about donaghy and the nba

i wanted too write this seperately because the list of people who commented on waynes story about donaghy and the nba was so long that i was afraid that no one would read what i have too say.

i've beeh watching the nba since 1961, (yes i know i'm an old fart) and some of the things i've seen since david stern has become the commish hasn't looked right. i understand that he's trying too sell a product and has too keep the ratings high. we all know that magic and bird saved the nba in 1980 when they entered the nba. then came the mj era. i think that era was the start of the problem. who else was there in the nba that stood out like mj? everyone hated the piston and their bad boy image. lakers and the celts were on a down hill slide. so what do i see? check out some of the things on my list and see if you remember and agree.

    1. mj's return from his baseball career. hornets down with seconds to go winner advances. shot missed and the hornets get the offensive rebound. can't remember who had the ball, but as the player for the hornets goes up for an easy basket or slam dunk, mj jumps up grabs the guy by the shoulders and pulls him down to the floor. theres the ref standing right in front of the play. NO CALL.

    2. bulls playing in the finals and cbs is covering the game. in the corner jordan takes a shot, misses the shot and gets a late foul call and 2 shots. on the replay you can clearly see that jordan was not fouled, it wasn't even close. the ref waited too see if the ball was going in before he made the call. if there was a foul it should have been called when the shot went up and a 3 point play possibility.

    3. one of my all time favorites. jazz vs bulls nba finals. jordan pushes i believe it was russell away with his hand so he can get a clear shot. offensive foul right? no it's mj and he can do whatever he wants, another NO CALL.

so everybody is happy cuz mj wins and the people who really love and know basketball (like me) are shaking their heads wondering, what the hell is going on here. i haven't like or trusted david stern and would not be surprised if he was behind a lot of the crap we see in the nba today. i really believe he's told ref's in the past, make sure mj wins and don't call anything against him. he's our meal ticket and thats all that counts.

i'm just wondering, what kind of messege is that for our young kids. unless your gonna be an mj you got no shot for a title? sorry too say but i really wish something would come down on stern and the whole nba. i'd love too find this guys been scaming the public for years.

guess who my 2 least favorite athletes are? thats right mj and barry bonds. i believe mj had a lot of talent, but his stats were better than they shoyld have been cuz of all the free throws he shouldn't have gotten. bond cuz of the steroids and all the armor he was allowed too wear to protect his elbow when he batted. if everyone could wear that kind of protection and crowd the plate we'd see a lot of guys hitting 70+ home runs.

ok i said enough. if you have any comments i will read them with an open mind. thanks for the opportunity too say whats on my mind.

Dave----first of all---let me commend you on your presentation....

Well presented, as your opinion, and reasons for that.....

You didn't adamantly state it, as if it was the 11th commandment, and you possibly couldn't be wrong, as some tend to do here....

I can see your points, however; I think that as long as there are stars like Bryant, James, etc, they'll continue to get the calls/no calls as it always has been.....

IMO----watch Shaq in a a game, he lowers his shoulder, fires into the defnder, and the defender gets called for a foul....see it all the time....

To me, I've been watching NBA since (about 54), and I've noticed the favortism to stars, with that being said, I don't think it has anything to do with Stern, or corrupt referees (there are some)......

To me, it's juist how it always has been.....a Star arises, and he gets the calls.....Part of the NBA MO....IMO...

Thanks for the professional mannerism in portraying your opinion, and welcoming input.....That's a rare move here lately in the Forum.....

Shows class to me, and that you're not an egotist, but rather open minded person.....Thanks

Hope all turns out well with the Ear Exam....Best to ya...

DD,like the Kapt said it's nice to here someones opinion in a positive way.I for one grew up loving Jordan and watched alot of his games. At 13 and 14 I would argue with anybody who says he gets special treatment but now looking back and watching he did get alot of special treatment. But I think alot of that comes with being the best. You don't think Greg Maddux gets the benefit of the doubt on an outside corner pitch.I think a great player getting the benefit of the doubt compared to the whole league being in on the conspiracy like some people here think are completly different

It's not a secret that MJ got every call. If a defender breathe too heavy on MJ the refs would blow the whistle.

Kapt, I disagree. It has EVERYTHING to do with Stern. It might have been going on since 1954 but it's gotten worse since MJ playing days. It's Stern's responsibility to clean up the game just like Goodel is trying to clean up the NFL. The NBA has a severe image problem. These scandals have brought the image problem to the forefront.

I'm talking about top players getting the benefit of the call....I don't thin Stern, or the referees, have compiled a scripted pact to do that, I just think it always has been that way, and it always will....regardless of who the Comissioner is....

Now they do have, a crediblity problem to clean up, but that's another shoe regarding fixed games....

We're talking about certain players always getting the calls....

RED is copied and pasted from my earlier statements, and if you'll notice, it relates to favortism on certain players (stars), getting the close calls, no calls, etc, nothing to do with NBA as a whole....

It's part of the game, and will always be.....IMO

thanks for the opinion guys. i agree with you kapt that the so called superstars get the best calls. i can rmemember a story about ted williams that a young pitcher threw a strike and the ump called it a ball. when the pitcher complained the ump yelled back. son if mr williams doesn't swing its a ball. the only problem i have with the superstar call is that it seems too happen in baseball and basketball. i don't see this in the nfl or nhl. maybe we should start at the jr high level and quit putting these young kids on a pedisol. when i was at the stardust casino back in the early 80's unlv had a kid named spiderman burns playing. he got kicked off the team as a senior when the school found out he wasn't passing his classes. his classes were finger painting and making baskets out of popcicle sticks. i can't figure out how this kid got thru jr and sr high. he's not the only kid that thats happened to. he ended up as a security guard for a year or soat the stardust and i got too talk to him 1 morning. he's very intelligent when it came to basketball, BUT anything else and this kid was as dumb as a rock. i'm surprised he could spell his name when he got his checks. thanks again for your input.
