Hot Lines: Friday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        New York vs. Toronto (-120, 7 1/2)

This total is low for a reason. Jays ace Roy Halladay takes the mound against the Yankees' Joba Chamberlain, who holds a team-low 2.45 ERA.

Pitching isn't the only reason this number is low, however. The Blue Jays just learned their cleanup hitter, Vernon Wells, will be out for a month with a strained hamstring muscle. Wells is hitting .287 with nine home runs and 42 RBIs. Unfortunately for Toronto, those are pretty good numbers on that club this year.

The Jays have been hitting better lately with a sudden surge of production in a sweep over the Orioles last series, but New York can appreciate their season-long hitting woes. New York's bats have gotten suddenly quiet and the over/under is 2-7-1 in their last 10 games.

The under has profited in four of the six meetings between these clubs this year.

        Pick: under 7 1/2

San Francisco vs. Chicago (-145, N/A)

As per usual, oddsmakers will take their time in setting a total for today's afternoon gig at Wrigley Field. But it is worth noting that the wind was blowing out to left center at 12 mph as of Friday morning, a wind that normally favors hitters.

Yesterday, the wind was blowing out to right center at 13 mph in the morning and oddsmakers ultimately settled on a total of 11 runs. The Reds and Cubs combined for 19 runs in a 12-7 Cincy win and the two clubs knocked out a whopping eight home runs.

Pick: over (whatever it ends up being)

            Update

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Cleveland Indians [7:05 PM ET]

Rays: James Shields has won three starts in a row and been impressive each time out. In his last 20.1 innings on the mound, Shields has allowed just five runs, while striking out 18. Unfortunately for the Rays, Shields best work has come at home. He's struggled on the road, going 2-4 with an unimpressive 6.09 ERA. Shields hasn't recorded a win against Cleveland in three career starts, although he's pitched well, sporting a strong 2.66 ERA in those outings.

Rays are 0-10 in the last 10 meetings at Cleveland.
Rays are 8-1 in their last 9 Friday games.

Key Injuries - SS Jason Bartlett (.256; knee) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Troy Percival (19 saves; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Indians (-120, O/U 8): Cliff Lee has been one of the few bright spots for the Indians this season but even he struggled his last time out against Minnesota, getting touched up for four runs over seven innings. Prior to that poor outing, Lee had only allowed a total of three runs in 23.1 innings of work. Lee could return to his winning ways today. He's 4-0 at home this season and 4-2 in his career against the Rays.
The UNDER has cashed in Lee's last three starts.

Indians are 1-10 in their last 11 games overall.
The OVER is 15-7 in Cleveland's last 22 games as a favorite.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Aaron Cook has been the Rockies most consistent starter this season but he's struggled over the last month. Cook pitched a complete game shutout against the Padres but lost outings versus the Mets, Royals and Marlins, allowing 17 runs in 19.2 innings. Cook has been solid on the road, going 6-3 with a 3.96 ERA in 10 starts away from home.
The UNDER has been profitable in Cook's road starts, going 3-1 in his last four appearances.

Rockies are 7-3 in their last 10 games on grass.
The OVER is 7-1 in Colorado's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Ryan Spilborghs (.314; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.
1B Todd Helton (back;.266) is on the 15-day DL.
SS Troy Tulowitzki (hand; .166) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Mets (-140, O/U 8.5): Oliver Perez has been sensational in his two most recent starts, giving up just one run over 14 innings, while striking out 14. In his last six starts, Perez has allowed one run or less four times. He's 3-2 at home this season with a 4.85 ERA. However, opposing hitters are batting just .213 against Perez at Shea Stadium.
Perez's last two starts have easily gone OVER the total.

Mets are 22-6 in the last 28 meetings at New York.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Perez's last 8 Friday starts.

Key Injuries - OF Ryan Church (.307; post-concussion syndrome) is on the 15-day DL.
2B Luis Castillo (.265; hip) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics [10:05 PM ET]

Angels: Jon Garland gets the call tonight for the Angels after a strong performance against the Blue Jays where he pitched a complete game, allowing just one run. Garland has been very consistent in his last 10 starts, giving up three runs or less nine times over that span. Garland has been money away from home, going 5-1 with an impressive 3.06 ERA in seven road starts this season.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Garland's last 10 starts.

Angels are 13-6 in their last 19 road games.
The UNDER is 9-2 in LA's last 11 Friday games.

Key Injuries - C Mike Napoli (.204; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

A's (-110, O/U 8.5): Sean Gallagher gets his first start for the A's tonight after coming to Oakland in the Rich Harden deal. The A's are hoping Gallagher fares much better for them than he did for the Cubs. Gallagher hasn't recorded a win since June 1 and Chicago had lost five consecutive games with him on the mound. The one bit of good news is all five of those losses were on the road. Gallagher performed much better in his home starts with the Cubs, going 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA.
The OVER has cashed in each of Gallagher's last three outings.

The UNDER is 7-1 in Oakland's last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Oakland's last 10 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Ryan Sweeney (.296; finger) is doubtful.
SS Bobby Crosby (.260; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.
3B Eric Chavez (.247; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Braves: Jo-Jo Reyes has lost three consecutive starts, allowing nine runs in 13.2 innings of work. Reyes is just 1-3 in five starts away from home but he's actually pitched pretty well. Reyes has a strong 2.52 ERA on the road but hasn't received much run support. The Padres must be happy to see Reyes. In two starts versus San Diego, he's been touched up for 10 hits and seven runs over 5.2 innings.

Braves are 16-5 in the last 21 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-0 in Reyes' last six starts.

Key Injuries - SS Omar Infante (.282; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Jeff Bennett (4.28 ERA; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Manny Acosta (4.02 ERA; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side Play of the Day)

Padres (-150, O/U 7): Jake Peavy is just 6-5 on the year but he possesses an impressive 2.67 ERA. The problem for Peavy has been run support. The problem being he hasn't received much of it. In his last 10 starts, Peavy has allowed three runs or less seven times but has just three victories to show for his efforts. The Braves are one of the few teams Peavy has struggled against in his career. He's just 1-4 versus Atlanta with an ERA of 4.70.

Padres are 1-10 in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in San Diego's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Brian Giles (.301; hamstring) is doubtful.
C Michael Barrett (.202; head) is on the 15-day DL.

              Week 3 Previews and Picks

Calgary Stampeders (1-1) at Montreal Alouettes (2-0) (Montreal -4)
The Stampeders are coming to Montreal after losing a dramatic game to their archrivals Edmonton Eskimos. Henry Burris threw three touchdown passes with 23 completions out of 35 attempts for 330 yards in the loss.
So far this season, Calgary has been rather efficient against the run but their pass defence has struggled. This should be a worry against the ingenious pass schemes shown so far by the Alouettes under new coach Marc Trestman. The Stampeders also will be without defensive end Julian Jenkins (out for the season with a leg injury), defensive linemen Funtaine Hunter and Juwan Simpson and linebacker Saleem Rasheed.
On the Alouettes side, linebacker Diamond Ferri practiced this week after leaving last Friday?s game with a leg injury and should be available although he is listed as questionable.
These teams met twice last season, each winning on the opponent?s field. Calgary?s defensive coordinator Chris Jones was part of the coaching team in Montreal last year and is therefore knowledgeable of the Alouettes? strengths and weaknesses. But he will be facing a brand new type of offensive playbook where his typical rush the quarterback defensive schemes may open up the field for Anthony Calvillo who completed 34 of 44 pass attempts for 372 yards against the Blue Bombers in a 38-24 win in week 2.
Montreal should prevail but it will be a nail biter and could be decided on a field goal.
              Pick: Stampeders +4

Toronto Argonauts (1-1) at Edmonton Eskimos (1-1) (Edmonton -2 1/2)
The quarterback controversy in Toronto, where last year?s MVP Kerry Joseph must share duties with incumbent starter Michael Bishop, seems to be hurting the Argos morale. So far, they have played below expectations for a team many experts thought could win it all this season in the East.
Kerry Joseph is expected to be the starting QB in Edmonton but Michael Bishop will see some action as head coach Rich Stubler decided to go on splitting duties at quarterback.
In Week 2, Toronto was upset 32-13 by the Tiger-Cats, who are still far from becoming a serious contender. Edmonton?s Ricky Ray completed 27 of 41 pass attempts for 448 yards with three touchdowns against Calgary in a dramatic 34-31 win.
The Argos will be playing without running back Tyler Ebell (out for the season), wide receivers David Boston and Bethel Johnson. The Eskimos will show up without defensive back Dan Comiskey and wide receiver Dante Luciani, both out indefinitely.
Overall, the Argonauts won four straight and seven of their last 10 games against Edmonton.
              Pick: Argonauts +2 1/2

              B.C. Lions (0-2) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-2) (Winnipeg -2 1/2)
Many picked B.C. and Winnipeg to be next November?s Grey Cup opponents. That makes it quite surprising to see both these teams squaring it off with winless records after the first two weeks of the season.
The Blue Bombers have many injured players and they particularly miss Dominic Picard at the center position. Obby Khan, another player who can play center is also injured. On the brighter side for Winnipeg, wide receiver Milt Stegall, who nurses a knee injury, should be available although listed as questionable.
Former Notre Dame QB Jarius Jackson has been a disappointment so far and was limited last week to 16 completed passes out of 30 attempts and 164 yards. Joe Smith provided two touchdowns in the 23-16 loss to Saskatchewan in Week 2.
In Montreal, the Blue Bombers were stunned early in the game and never recovered, losing 38-24 to the Als. But Kevin Glenn had a strong second half, finishing the game with 26 of 40 passing for 313 yards and a touchdown.
History says that the Lions have prevailed eight times out of the last 10 games against Winnipeg but this time, the Blue Bombers seem to be the better team and, in front of their fans, should get their first win of the 2008 season.
              Pick: Blue Bombers -2 1/2

Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-0) at Hamilton Tiger Cats (1-1) (Hamilton -2)
Although the Saskatchewan Roughriders have traded star QB Kerry Joseph after winning the Grey Cup, this team still has some weapons offensively and a stout defence that can stop the run and the pass.
Luca Congi managed four field goals last week in a come-from-behind win of 23-16 against the Lions. The Tiger-Cats are stronger at quarterback with Casey Printers while the Roughriders will have to give the ball to third stringer Darian Durant who will get his first CFL start.
Durant replaces starter Marcus Crandell who suffered a hamstring injury in last week?s win over B.C. He is out indefinitely. Coach Ken Miller was more impressed by Durant than backup Steven Jyles who both saw action against the Lions.
The Roughriders will also have to find a way to stop running back Jesse Lumsden who rushed for 189 yards off 20 carries with two touchdowns to lead Hamilton to a 32-13 upset win against Toronto in Week 2.
The Tiger-Cats will need more strong performances from Printers and Lumsden but they still have too many weaknesses to be taken seriously. Although they will give the Riders a better opposition that we would have expected a few weeks ago, Saskatchewan will still prevail here.
              Pick: Roughriders +2

                    Grand Rapids Rampage at San Jose Sabercats (-5 1/2, O/U 119 1/2)

Regular season success has meant very little in the AFL playoffs in recent years. In 2006, the Chicago Rush were 5-9 with two weeks remaining in the regular season. They won their final two games to earn a playoff spot, then won three straight playoff games on the road to reach the Arena Bowl before pulling off another upset to earn their first AFL championship.

Last year, the Columbus Destroyers were sitting at 6-9 heading into their final regular season game. Columbus, too, got hot when it mattered most, winning their regular season finale to sneak into the playoffs, then winning on the road at Tampa Bay, Dallas and Georgia to reach the Arena Bowl before coming up short in their championship efforts.

Grand Rapids has had the feel of a team like Columbus from last year, or Chicago from '06 for the last month. The Rampage were not good for most of the regular season, losing eight out of nine during one particularly ugly mid-season stretch.

But the Rampage played their best football when it counted, reeling off three consecutive wins to close out the regular season, then winning outright as a road underdog at Arizona and at Chicago in the first two rounds of the playoffs. First year head coach Steve Thonn and first year starting quarterback James MacPherson seem to be clicking together right now as Grand Rapids has averaged nearly 70 points per game during their current five game winning streak. That has helped them go over the total in four of those five contests.

But the Rampage will be playing their fifth consecutive must-win road game in a row, and they'll be facing the stiffest competition yet - the defending Arena Bowl champs, San Jose.

The Sabercats suffered a significant injury loss last week in their win over Colorado. Wide receiver James Roe is a question mark for Saturday with a bum shoulder after his three touchdown performance against the Crush. Roe was second on the team in touchdown receptions this year and caught 102 Mark Grieb passes.

The Sabercats beat Grand Rapids 66-58 in Michigan back in Week 1, their only regular season meeting. And San Jose enjoys a tremendous advantage at the HP Pavilion at 17-2 SU over the past two seasons.

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Grieb led the league with 100 touchdown passes this season while ranking third in the AFL in completion percentage. But the strength of this team might well be their defense. Defensive backs Clevan Thomas, Omarr Smith and Marquis Floyd have played every game together in the secondary this season.

This elite level trio has notched at least one interception in eleven straight games, helping San Jose rebound nicely from their disappointing 5-5 start. The Sabercats have won seven in a row and nine of their last 10 overall, with seven of those nine wins coming by double digit margins.
