    Daily Sports Roundup

    July 11

Joba Chamberlain will be looking to pitch the Yankees to a road win over the Blue Jays on Friday night - but he'll have to get past a big obstacle in All-Star hurler Roy Halladay.

Chamberlain has made six starts for New York since being plucked out of the team's bullpen, and he's held the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in each of those outings. However, the righthander is just 1-0 with five no-decisions over that span, lasting at least six innings in just three of those games, and walking 17 in 32 2-3 innings.

Still, New York hasn't suffered from Chamberlain's inclusion in the rotation, as they're 5-1 in his six starts. As a reliever Chamberlain faced the Blue Jays three times earlier in the season. Back in early April the righthander blanked Toronto for an inning in back-to-back outings, earning one victory. On June 3 he gave up a pair of runs in 2 1-3 innings.

Halladay will be looking to grab his 11th win of the season when he takes the mound at Rogers Centre on Friday night. The veteran righthander, who made the AL All-Star team for the fifth time this past week, is coming off a strong outing against the Angels in which he surrendered two earned runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out seven.

Toronto has sent Halladay out against the Bronx Bombers twice already this season, and he went 1-1 in those two starts. Way back on April 1 Halladay gave up three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings versus New York as the Blue Jays lost 3-2. On June 3 the righthander got the win after giving up just two earned runs over six innings.

The Red Sox will also play an AL East rival on Friday night, as they'll get a visit from the Orioles. Boston's Clay Buchholz will return to the major leagues and make the start at Fenway Park on Friday; the righthander was 2-3 with a 5.53 ERA earlier in the season. The O's will counter Buchholz with Brian Burres, who is 6-5 with a 5.07 ERA on the year.

Elsewhere around the AL on Friday it's Tampa Bay at Cleveland, Minnesota at Detroit, the Chicago White Sox at Texas, and Seattle at Kansas City. As well, Sean Gallagher will make his Athletics debut in Oakland when he takes on Jon Garland and the Angels.

Over in the National League the top pitcher on the docket for Friday is the Padres' Jake Peavy, who blanked the Diamondbacks on three hits over seven innings in a win last Saturday. Peavy is 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA on the season, although the Padres are only 3-7 over his last 10 starts. Atlanta and starter Jo-Jo Reyes provide the Friday opposition.

The rest of the NL action on Friday: San Francisco at the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Colorado at the New York Mets, Houston at Washington, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, and Florida at the Los Angeles Dodgers. As well, a couple of fading teams will do battle as Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies host Doug Davis and the Diamondbacks.

There's a single Canadian Football League game on tap for Friday night, with the Blue Bombers playing host to the Lions. Both Winnipeg and British Columbia are winless in two games this season, and they're both 0-2 against-the-spread as well. The oddsmakers are siding with Winnipeg at home in this one, as they're 2-point favorites.

Finally, there are two WNBA games to fill out the night's schedule, with Washington at Detroit and Atlanta at San Antonio. The expansion Dream have been the underdog in each of their 19 games so far this season, picking up eight victories against-the-spread.

      Six-pack for Friday

This is how I would organize the Home Run Derby this year; with the odd dimensions at the Bronx Ballpark, right-handed hitters are stupid to enter, since they probably can't win, as the rigthfield fences are so much closer than leftfield. This is how I would arrange the teams for Monday's exhibition:

      National
      Ryan Howard
      Adrian Gonzalez
      Prince Fielder
      Adam Dunn
      Kosuke Fukudome

      American
      Justin Morneau
      Nick Markakis
      Jason Giambi
      Milton Bradley
      Ichiro Suzuki

Friday's Den: Random thoughts on a summer day.........

        13) Part of the reason Arizona Diamondbacks are struggling is the injury suffered by catcher Chris Snyder, who broke one of his testicles when hit below the belt by a foul tip. It stung just to type that-- not sure what the recovery time is for Snyder.

        12) As of Thursday AM, Ian Kinsler of Texas had scored 16 more runs than anyone in American League; Josh Hamilton had 21 more RBI than anyone-- Rangers are still in third place.

        11) Twins were outscored 31-14 in Livan Hernandez' last three road starts. Minnesota needs to call Francisco Liriano up from Rochester pretty soon.

        10) CC Sabathia's full name is Carsten Charles Sabathia.

        9) Why would Brewer fans buy Sabathia's jersey? He's going to play for Milwaukee the rest of the season, then make a ton of money in free agency. Those jerseys are pretty expensive.

        8) Did I mention I hate the A's new black jerseys? The starting pitcher for Oakland chooses what jersey the team wears, but it turns out Justin Duchscherer loves the black jerseys- the way he is pitching, maybe the A's should wear them every day.

        7) Gritty A's trailed Seattle 2-0 in ninth Thursday, but got pair of 9th-inning homers from Cust/Suzuki, then Emil Brown won it in the 11th inning-- A's took three of four from Mariners. They wore their white jerseys Thursday with Greg Smith pitching.

        6) Pittsburgh beat Houston 10-7 earlier this week, which left me to wonder if, in the history of baseball, if there was ever a game before with that many runs scored where the starting pitchers allowed all the runs? I think about things like this. Seriously.

        5) Toronto scored three or less runs in McGowan's first eleven starts this season, and in 14 of his 18 starts overall.

        4) Saw something I never saw before watching Washington on TV the other night; they called Odalis Perez for two balks in a row, then Angel Hernandez tossed Perez for arguing the balks. I mean, when does a starting pitcher get thrown out in the 3rd inning, without having drilled a guy on purpose?

        3) Which brings me to umpires; as many games as I watch on the Extra Innings package, you get a feel for who the bad umps are, because they're always in arguments. Good umpires don't make as many bad calls, obviously, but they also get respect from players/coaches. From what I've observed, umpires who are in controversy a lot are: Hernandez, Adrian Johnson, Mike Dimuro and Brian Runge.

        2) There are 120 Division I college football programs, and 89 of them have won a bowl since Notre Dame last won a bowl, but Irish still rake in $9M a year on their TV contract. Go figure.

        1) NBA salary cap next year will be $58,680,000, with minimum payroll of $44.01M. Teams with payroll over $71.15M will have a pay the luxury tax. There are only fifteen guys on rosters, so you do the math as far as the average NBA salary, and none of those guys risk suffering broken testicles.

BCLions (0-2) @ Winnipeg (0-2)-- Loser falls to 0-3, so obvious that it is huge game, even in Week 3; Bo mbers had 13 penalties four turnovers in Week 1, loss vut back to three penalties and no TOs last week, but still lost 38-24 in Montreal. Lions gained total of just 528 yards in two games this season, and last week, in home loss to Saskatchewan, they were outscored 16-2 in the second half.

Saskatchewan (2-0) @ Hamilton (1-1)-- Riders' needed their 3rd string QB Durant to bail them out in second half at BC in last weeks' comeback win; they outscored their two foes 41-8 in the second half of games this season. TiCats ran ball for 311 yards in upset win at Toronto last week, to Riders have to be stout against the run. Hamilton has only one takeaway in two games.

Tampa Bay Rays at Cleveland Indians [7:05 PM ET]

Rays: James Shields has won three starts in a row and been impressive each time out. In his last 20.1 innings on the mound, Shields has allowed just five runs, while striking out 18. Unfortunately for the Rays, Shields best work has come at home. He's struggled on the road, going 2-4 with an unimpressive 6.09 ERA. Shields hasn't recorded a win against Cleveland in three career starts, although he's pitched well, sporting a strong 2.66 ERA in those outings.
The OVER is 3-0-1 in Shields' last four starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Indians (-120, O/U 8): Cliff Lee has been one of the few bright spots for the Indians this season but even he struggled his last time out against Minnesota, getting touched up for four runs over seven innings. Prior to that poor outing, Lee had only allowed a total of three runs in 23.1 innings of work. Lee could return to his winning ways today. He's 4-0 at home this season and 4-2 in his career against the Rays.
The UNDER has cashed in Lee's last three starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Aaron Cook has been the Rockies most consistent starter this season but he's struggled over the last month. Cook pitched a complete game shutout against the Padres but lost outings versus the Mets, Royals and Marlins, allowing 17 runs in 19.2 innings. Cook has been solid on the road, going 6-3 with a 3.96 ERA in 10 starts away from home.
The UNDER has been profitable in Cook's road starts, going 3-1 in his last four appearances.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets (-140, O/U 8.5): Oliver Perez has been sensational in his two most recent starts, giving up just one run over 14 innings, while striking out 14. In his last six starts, Perez has allowed one run or less four times. He's 3-2 at home this season with a 4.85 ERA. However, opposing hitters are batting just .213 against Perez at Shea Stadium.
Perez's last two starts have easily gone OVER the total.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics [10:05 PM ET]

Angels: Jon Garland gets the call tonight for the Angels after a strong performance against the Blue Jays where he pitched a complete game, allowing just one run. Garland has been very consistent in his last 10 starts, giving up three runs or less nine times over that span. Garland has been money away from home, going 5-1 with an impressive 3.06 ERA in seven road starts this season.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Garland's last 10 starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

A's (-110, O/U 8): Sean Gallagher gets his first start for the A's tonight after coming to Oakland in the Rich Harden deal. The A's are hoping Gallagher fares much better for them than he did for the Cubs. Gallagher hasn't recorded a win since June 1 and Chicago had lost five consecutive games with him on the mound. The one bit of good news is all five of those losses were on the road. Gallagher performed much better in his home starts with the Cubs, going 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA.
The OVER has cashed in each of Gallagher's last three outings.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Braves: Jo-Jo Reyes has lost three consecutive starts, allowing nine runs in 13.2 innings of work. Reyes is just 1-3 in five starts away from home but he's actually pitched pretty well. Reyes has a strong 2.52 ERA on the road but hasn't received much run support. The Padres must be happy to see Reyes. In two starts versus San Diego, he's been touched up for 10 hits and seven runs over 5.2 innings.
The UNDER is 6-0 in Reyes' last six starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Padres (-150, O/U 7): Jake Peavy is just 6-5 on the year but he possesses an impressive 2.67 ERA. The problem for Peavy has been run support. The problem being he hasn't received much of it. In his last 10 starts, Peavy has allowed three runs or less seven times but has just three victories to show for his efforts. The Braves are one of the few teams Peavy has struggled against in his career. He's just 1-4 versus Atlanta with an ERA of 4.70.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                            MLB

                            Friday, July 11

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                            Streaking Starting Pitchers
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Streaking

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (7-5, 3.64)

Shields puts his three-game winning streak on the line Friday when his league-leading Rays visit the Tribe. Tampa Bay need not worry; its right-hander has been pitching the lights out in his last three starts, posting a 2.21 ERA.

In his last road tilt, Shields conceded one earned run in seven innings pitched. He also has a 0-1-career record at Progressive Field with a respectable 2.84 ERA.

The Rays are 7-3 in their last 10 and are 5-1 in Shields' last six starts against the AL Central.

Manny Parra, Milwaukee Brewers (8-2, 3.65)

Ben Sheets isn't the only starter putting up career numbers in Milwaukee. Parra has been puzzling hitters all season and he has the statistics to back it up.

Parra has been solid since cracking Milwaukee's rotation. The lefty is 2-0 with a spectacular 1.50 ERA in his past three starts and has surrendered just one earned run in his last four contests. Parra is also 5-0 at Miller Park with a 2.70 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.

Milwaukee is 6-1 in Parras' last seven starts. The Brewers are also 13-3 in their last 16 against the NL Central.

                            Slumping

Jason Marquis, Chicago Cubs (6-5, 4.78)

Home field hasn't been very kind to Marquis. The veteran is 3-3 with a 6.59 ERA at Wrigley Field. In his last home start, an 11-4 setback to the Baltimore Orioles, the right-hander conceded seven hits and surrendered seven earned runs in seven innings pitched.

Marquis is just 1-2 in his past three starts with a 7.00 ERA and has relinquished 15 earned runs in his last seven outings.

The righty is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA this season against the Giants.

                            Jo-Jo Reyes, Atlanta Braves (3-7, 4.40)

Reyes hasn't had much career success against the lowly Padres. In two tilts against San Diego, the left-hander is a dismal 0-2 with a lofty 10.50 ERA.

Reyes is 0-2 in his last three overall, posting a 5.93 ERA and 1.83 WHIP. He is also 1-3 on the road with 2.52 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.

The Braves are 3-7 in Reyes' last 10 starts outside Turner Field.

                              SCOREBOARD

                              Friday, July 11

Arizona at Philadelphia (7:05 p.m. EDT). Two of the top teams in their divisions meet up when the Diamondbacks take on the Phillies.

                              STARS

                              Thursday

                              - Justin Morneau, Twins, matched a career high with five hits, one of them a game-winning homer in the 11th inning of a 7-6 win over the Tigers.

                              - Paul Maholm, Pirates, allowed two runs in eight innings in a 4-2 victory over the Yankees.

                              - Fernando Tatis, Mets, went 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs as the Mets swept a three-game series from the Giants with a 7-3 victory.

                              - Ryan Howard, Phillies, homered twice and drove in three runs in a 4-1 win over St. Louis.

                              - Dave Bush, Brewers, had a career-high 13 strikeouts in an 11-1 win over Colorado.

                              - Adam Lind, Blue Jays, had a game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning in a 6-5 win over Baltimore to complete a three-game sweep.

                              DO-OVER

Paul Maholm made the most of a second chance. He allowed two runs over eight innings as Pittsburgh rallied to beat the Yankees 4-2 in a makeup of a June 26 rainout. Back then, Maholm gave up extra-base hits to the first four batters as the Yankees took a 3-0 against the left-hander, only to watch the statistics get wiped out by the heavy downpour.

                              TRIBAL TROUBLE

The Rays can't seem to figure out Cleveland, where they lost 13-2 in the series opener. It was the 10th straight loss in Cleveland, their last win there coming on Sept. 29, 2005, when Lou Piniella was manager. The Rays' 26-56 record overall against Cleveland is their worst against any opponent.

                              LATE-SCORING BURST

More runs were scored in the last 2 1/2 innings (10) of the Diamondbacks-Nationals series than in the rest of the three-game series combined (nine).

                              ALL-STAR PARTY

Corey Hart celebrated making the NL All-Star team with his 15th homer in Milwaukee's 11-1 win over Colorado. Hart said it was difficult concentrating on playing during the vote. "It was a frustrating experience, but it paid off with all the campaigning,'' he said. "Now, it's worth it.''

                              PHILL-ER UP

Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is hitting .353 (18-for-51) with eight homers and 18 RBIs over a 13-game hitting streak. He leads the National League with 27 homers, two better than teammate Chase Utley, and 83 RBIs.

                              NEWEST MR. MET

Fernando Tatis homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs as the Mets beat San Francisco 7-3 for their sixth straight victory.

                              GIANT STRUGGLES

The Giants ended their scoreless streak at 21 innings, but still lost their fourth in a row. They were held to three hits in each of the three losses to the Mets.

                              RED MENACE

David Ross hit two of Cincinnati's seven homers, a long-ball barrage that included Ken Griffey Jr.'s 605th, and the Reds avoided a sweep with a 12-7 victory over the Cubs. It was only Chicago's 11th home loss this season.

                              LET GO

Slugger Richie Sexson was finally released by the Mariners after a slump that lasted for most of two seasons and made him a target of constant booing from frustrated Seattle fans. The Mariners would have loved to have been able to trade Sexson, but his $14 million salary this season made that nearly impossible. So now Seattle is eating the rest of that money - $6,120,219 Sexson is owed from Friday through the end of the season - in what may be the first of multiple moves to rid the last-place team of underperforming veteran players.

                              SPEAKING

"It feels pretty good - a lot better than what we had been doing. That stunk.'' - Indians first baseman Casey Blake, who had three RBIs to help end a 10-game losing streak.

                              SEASONS

                              July 11

1914 - Babe Ruth made his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox and received credit for a 4-3 victory over Cleveland. He was removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh, and Duffy Lewis' single led to the winning run.

1944 - Phil Cavaretta set an All-Star game record by reaching base safely five straight times - triple, single, three walks - to lead the NL to a 7-1 victory over the AL at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

1950 - The All-Star game returned to Comiskey Park, the site of the first game, and was won by the NL 4-3 on Red Schoendienst's 14th-inning home run off Ted Gray. It was the first extra-inning All-Star game, the first time the NL won at an AL park and the first All-Star game shown on network television.

1961 - Despite a record seven errors and pitcher Stu Miller getting blown off the Candlestick Park mound by a gale wind, the NL edged the AL 5-4 in the first of two All-Star games played that year.

1967 - Tony Perez's home run off Catfish Hunter in the 15th inning gave the NL a 2-1 win in the longest game in All-Star history. The game was played in California's Anaheim Stadium.

1973 - Jim Northrup of Detroit knocked in eight runs, batting in the leadoff spot, to lead the Tigers to a 14-2 romp over the Texas Rangers.

1978 - Steve Garvey keyed the NL's 7-3 All-Star victory at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium with a game-tying, two-run single and a triple that sparked a four-run eighth inning.

1985 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first pitcher in major league history to reach the 4,000-strikeout mark when he fanned New York's Danny Heep leading off the sixth inning. The Astros beat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings on Bill Doran's fifth hit of the game.

1995 - Jeff Conine's solo shot in the eighth inning gave the NL a 3-2 victory in the All-Star game. Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza also homered for the NL.

2000 - Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored as the AL defeated the NL 6-3 in the All-Star game. Jeter became the first Yankee to win the All-Star game MVP.

2006 - With the American League down to its final strike, Michael Young hit a two-run triple off Trevor Hoffman for a 3-2 victory that kept the Americans unbeaten in the All-Star game for the past decade. The NL took a 2-1 lead into the ninth behind David Wright's homer and some daring, old-style baserunning.

Today's birthdays: Yorman Bazardo 24; Blaine Boyer 27; Javier Lopez 31.
