    Daily Sports Roundup

    July 10

While the disappointing Indians seem to have tossed the towel on the season, the disappointing Tigers look like they're trying to salvage their year and make the playoffs.

The Tigers were one of the biggest stories in baseball over the offseason because of all the moves they made, and they were one of the biggest stories in baseball early on this season because those moves weren't paying off. Instead, Detroit was struggling in the AL Central standings, and falling into a big hole behind both the White Sox and Twins.

However, Detroit put up 19 wins in the month of June to get back within shouting distance of a playoff berth, and they've been getting good performances out of two key players - Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera. Verlander, the team's ace, was terrible at the start of the year, but he's now gone 4-0 over his past six starts. Cabrera was less than impressive early on as well, but he's been heating up over the past couple weeks.

And the Tigers will get a chance to make up some ground on one of their division rivals starting on Thursday afternoon, as the Twins come to town for a four-game series that leads into the All-Star break. Minnesota took two-of-three from Detroit just last week, and their five-game winning streak came to an end versus the Red Sox Monday night.

A pair of .500 pitchers will take to the mound in Thursday's series-opening matinee, with the Twins' Kevin Slowey (6-6, 3.78 ERA) facing off against the Tigers' Kenny Rogers (6-6, 4.60 ERA). Slowey is 4-0 over his last five starts, although he had his offense to thank for his win over the Indians on Saturday (the righthander gave up five earned runs in just six innings). Slowey blanked the Tigers over six innings in a win back on May 23.

Rogers is just 1-2 over his last three outings, and the veteran lefthander surrendered 12 earned runs on 23 hits in just 19 innings of work in that trio of contests. Rogers faced the Twins on May 4, giving up five runs (three earned) in 6 2-3 innings in a no-decision.

The team that the Tigers and Twins are both chasing, the White Sox, will be on the road in Kansas City on Thursday night to take on the Royals. Chicago will send Mark Buehrle (6-7, 3.91 ERA) to the mound in that contest, while Kansas City will counter with Zack Greinke (7-5, 3.62 ERA). The White Sox just got slugging first baseman Paul Konerko back from the disabled list, but closer Bobby Jenks is now on the shelf with a sore back.

The fifth AL Central team, the Indians, host the Rays Thursday. Other American League games on the schedule include Seattle at Oakland, Baltimore at Toronto, and the Los Angeles Angels at Texas. As well, the Yankees will be in Pittsburgh for a makeup date.

Over in the National League, the top Thursday matchup will see the Phillies and Jamie Moyer (7-6, 4.12 ERA) get a visit from the Cardinals and Braden Looper (9-6, 4.15 ERA). Moyer has gone just 0-3 with a no-decision over his past four starts, but he held the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in each of those games. Looper is coming off a home loss versus the Cubs in which he gave up two earned runs in seven innings.

Elsewhere in the NL on Thursday it's San Francisco at the New York Mets, Colorado at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at the Chicago Cubs, Arizona at Washington, and Florida at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Marlins starter Josh Johnson will return from the DL for that one.

There are two Canadian Football League games on tap for Thursday, with Calgary at Montreal, and Toronto at Edmonton. The Alouettes have been the best of that quartet so far this season, going 2-0 straight-up and against-the-spread. The Argonauts, Stampeders, and Eskimos are all 1-1 both SU and ATS through their first two contests.

Finally, WNBA fans have three games to look forward to on Thursday, with Phoenix at Seattle, San Antonio at Chicago, and Los Angeles at Sacramento. The Silver Stars have the best record in the West at 13-6 this year, but they're only 3-5 ATS on the road.

      Six-pack for Thursday

-- Josh Hamilton hit the first-ever walk-off HR off Francisco Rodriguez as Texas scored three in ninth to edge Halos, 5-4.

-- Giants didn't score in first two games of series at Shea; as well as Mets are playing right now, they're not going to be happy to see the All-Star break here.

-- Cleveland's month from hell continued as they lost 8-6 in Detroit, after leading 6-0; Cabrera's walk-off tater ended it.

-- Underrated hurler John Lannan tossed six shutout innings as he ended a long skid in Nationals' 5-0 win vs Arizona.

-- Mark Mulder lasted just 16 pitches in Cardinals' 4-2 loss in Philly; you have to think his career as a starter is over-- not sure if his arm could take being a reliever or not.

-- Think the Nets were happy when Brook Lopez didn't have one rebound in 19:53 in his first summer league game? Lopez grabbed seven caroms in his second professional game.

Thursday's Den: Runnin' the bases in American League

Milwaukee just used its first-round pick in last year’s draft to grab CC Sabathia away from the Indians, making the Brewers a strong playoff contender this season. How do different teams approach the draft? Here is a quick, thumbnail sketch of how each American League team drafted last month………

Baltimore—Took 25 pitchers, but only one of first five picks were moundsmen, which is little strange for pitching-starved franchise; they took nine JC kids, four from Puerto Rico, 25 from 4-year colleges, 16 from HSs. Added 25 pitchers overall.

Boston—Took 29 high school kids, an awful lot; 20 of first 31 picks were prep players. Five of the 22 college kids they took came from JC ranks. Sox took 28 pitchers. Their farm system (Pedroia-Lester-Masterson-Papelbon) is only thing keeping them in pennant race this season.

Chi Sox— Pale Hose took major league-low 19 pitchers in the ’08 draft, with only two of their first eight picks hurlers. Took 17 high school kids in last 22 picks, after only two of first 27 picks were from HS, giving them 19 high schoolers, 30 college kids overall.

Cleveland—Nine of first 12 picks came from 4-year colleges; then they went heavy for JC kids, taking 10 in all, out of 36 college players chosen. Tribe chose 30 pitchers, but don’t forget they also added four prospects in the Sabathia trade.

Detroit—Drafted five catchers, as Pudge Rodriguez’ age is an issue; eight of their first 10 picks were pitchers, with four of first five selections from SEC schools. 20 of the 25 pitchers they took are right-handed. Took only nine high school kids out of 50 selections.

Kansas City— Atlanta influence in front office is obvious, as eight of their first nine picks came from either HS or Puerto Rico; 11 of the 24 college kids they took come from JCs. Breakdown: 28 HS kids/13 from 4-year colleges/11 from JCs. Took 29 pitchers overall; parent team still needs pitching.

LA Angels—First nine picks were high school or JC kids; six of their first eight selections were pitchers. Took nine JC kids overall, as well as a battery from Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas (Greg/Mike Maddux, Mike Morgan are from Vegas). Took 18% JC kids/35% HS/47% 4-year college. Chose 27 P's.

Minnesota—Two extra picks they got for letting Torii Hunter walk turned into pitchers from Miami, Tulane, two traditional D-I powers; only drafted two catchers- 25 of their 33 college picks are from 4-year schools. Draft means more to Twins that most teams- they took 28 pitchers overall.

Bronx Bombers—35 college kids (only four from JCs), 16 high schoolers, 26 pitchers, three umpires (it’s a joke!!!)- their first three picks were pitchers. One of most intriguing picks in draft was Venditte kid from Creighton who can pitch with either hand and already has in NY-Penn League.

A’s—First nine picks were college kids; they need players who can get to major leagues quicker than most teams. First pick was Rickie Weeks’ brother, a 2B from Miami. Took two players each from Wichita/Kansas State (farm director Lieppman is a Jayhawk). 35 college kids, 15 HS kids, 26 pitchers overall.

Seattle—Four of first five picks were pitchers; 14 of first 16 picks were college kids, with only one JC kid in that group; overall, eight of their 38 college selections were from 2-year schools. Took two players each from Elon, Long Beach State. Drafted 29 pitchers; they’ll draft lot higher next year.

Tampa Bay—Their run of drafting very high appears to be over; three of their first four picks were HS kids; not often you draft a kid whose already in Cooperstown- they drafted a catcher who lives in same town as Hall of Fame later on in day. Only two of their first eight picks were pitchers.

Texas— Three of first four pitchers they took are left-handed; they drafted a pitcher from UCLA who DH’d for Bruins when he wasn’t on mound. Took two high school hurlers in first four picks, but only 14 of their 50 picks were high schoolers. This team needs pitching help- they selected 26 hurlers.

Toronto—Only one of top seven picks was a pitcher; two of their first 13 selections come from Hawai’I, so at least Toronto scouts have a good time while working. Took seven JC kids, 23 pitchers. Weird draft for Jays, since this year’s disaster might mean the end is near for GM Ricciardi.

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 PM ET]

Reds: After getting hammered by the Dodgers and Blue Jays, Bronson Arroyo has bounced back with two quality starts in a row. In his last 12 innings of work, Arroyo has allowed only two runs, while striking out nine. Even though one of those outings came away from home against the Indians, Arroyo has been lit up on the road overall this year where he possesses a lofty 7.17 ERA. He's just 4-6 against the Cubs in his career, although his ERA is a solid 3.13. The OVER is 5-0-1 in Arroyo's last six road starts.

The UNDER is 10-3-2 in Cincinnati's last 15 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 6-2-1 in Arroyo's last 9 starts vs. Chicago.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-180): After winning five consecutive games with Ted Lilly on the mound, the Cubs finally dropped one in his last start versus the Cardinals. However, Lilly pitched well in that game, allowing just two runs over seven innings. It was one of the few times this season that the Cubs didn't provide Lilly with much run support. The left-hander has been solid over his last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less seven times in that span. Lilly is 5-2 at home this year, although his ERA is close to five. The OVER is 4-1-1 in Lilly's last six appearances.

Cubs are 17-2 in their last 19 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; hand) is on the 15-day DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays [7:07 PM ET]

Orioles: Unlucky Jeremy Guthrie takes to the mound tonight for Baltimore. In his last 10 outings, Guthrie has allowed one run five times but his record over that span is just 1-2, with two no-decisions. That one win did come against the Blue Jays, however. For some reason, the Orioles bats go to sleep with Guthrie on the hill. Guthrie is only 3-4 on the road but his ERA is a respectable 3.71. Despite his solid efforts, the OVER is 4-2 in Guthrie's last six starts.

The OVER is 15-3 in Baltimore's last 18 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 11-1 in the last 12 meetings.

Key Injuries - 2B Alex Cintron (.275; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Blue Jays (-175, O/U 7.5): Roy Halladay has been dominating in his last two starts, striking out 13 and allowing just one run over 16 innings of work. In his last 10 starts, Halladay has allowed two runs or less seven times. He's absolutely owned the Orioles in his career, going 17-4 with a stellar 2.93 ERA in 23 starts against Baltimore. Surprisingly, two of Halladay's last three starts have gone OVER the total.

Blue Jays are 42-12 in Halladay's last 54 home starts.
Blue Jays are 17-4 in Halladay's last 21 starts vs. Baltimore.

Key Injuries - OF Shannon Stewart (.240; ankle) is on the 15-day DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals [8:10 PM ET]

White Sox (-120, O/U 8.5): Mark Buehrle had a three-game winning streak snapped his last time out against Oakland when he gave up 10 hits and four runs in just 5.2 innings. In Buehrle's previous 23 innings of work, he had only allowed 16 hits and three runs. Buehrle could start another winning streak tonight against a Royals team he has dominated over the years, going 16-6 with a 3.40 ERA in 31 starts. The UNDER is 4-1 in Buehrle's last five outings.

White Sox are 11-2 in their last 13 games overall.
White Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.213; oblique) has returned.
Closer Bobby Jenks (18 saves; back) is on the 15-day DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Royals: Zack Greinke has been the Royals' most consistent pitcher this season, sporting a solid 3.62 ERA in 117 innings of work. Greinke has been particularly tough at home where he is 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six starts this season. Greinke faces a White Sox team that's really given him trouble in the past. In 11 career starts against Chicago, Greinke is just 2-7 with an ERA of 4.81.

Royals are 2-8 in Greinke's last 10 starts vs. Chicago.
The OVER is 11-3 in Kansas City's last 14 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Joey Gathright (.250; undisclosed) is questionable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Florida Marlins at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Marlins: Josh Johnson makes his first start of the season after beginning the year on the DL while recovering from elbow surgery. Johnson started four games for the Marlins in 2007 and it wasn't pretty. He went 0-3 with an ERA of 7.47. Teams hit a whopping .388 against Johnson last year. Johnson has started two games during his career against the Dodgers, going 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA.

Marlins are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Florida's last 11 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - 2B Dan Uggla (.289; ankle) is expected to return.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-155, O/U 8.5): Chan Ho Park has really stepped for the Dodgers this season. Park began the year as a relief pitcher but moved into the starting rotation because of injuries and he's done a phenomenal job. In his last three starts, Park has only allowed two runs in 17 innings of work. Park has been untouchable at Dodgers Stadium where he's won both starts and possesses an ERA of 0.62. Park's last two starts have gone UNDER the total.

Dodgers are 7-2 in their last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-1 in LA's last 10 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Juan Pierre (.277; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                        MLB

                        Thursday, July 10

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Streaking Starting Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

                        Chan Ho Park (4-2, 2.36)

We were as surprised to put Chan Ho Park in the Streaking section as you probably are reading it, but you can't argue with the numbers. Since the Dodgers put Park back in the rotation on June 21, he has allowed just two runs over more than 18 innings while picking up two wins (one of which was in a spot relief appearance).

What's probably more shocking about the mercurial veteran is that he has also a 23:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio since making that spot start back on June 21 as well.

"He was the old Chan Ho," catcher Russell Martin told reporters after Park went six scoreless against the Angels at the end of last month. "He's sneaky with his fastball and he was ahead of the hitters."

                        Kevin Slowey (6-6, 3.78)

Slowey was smacked around a bit in his last start, allowing six hits and five earned runs over six innings, but the Twins' offense helped him by putting nine runs on the board against the struggling Indians. Minnesota is now 7-2 in Slowey's last nine trips to the hill.

It has been a nice change of fortune for the 24-year-old after he lost seven of his first nine starts to begin the season. Slowey has only been hit hard twice all year - that last outing against the Indians and back in early June when he allowed eight earned against the White Sox. Outside of those two blips and he hasn't given up more than four runs in a start all year. Plus, for a young kid, he has great control, piling up 60 strikeouts to just 11 walks.

                        Slumping

                        Jason Bergmann (1-6, 4.15)

Jason Bergmann probably wouldn't be today's slumping pitcher if he wasn't throwing for the futile Washington Nationals. He has allowed more than three earned runs in just three of his last nine outings, but hasn't registered a win since May 15. So he definitely isn't the whole problem here.

However, the longball hasn't been kind to Bergmann. He has allowed 13 jacks in 73 2/3 innings so far and he gave up 18 homers in just over 115 innings last season.
