    Daily Sports Roundup

    Daily Sports Roundup: July 8

The Milwaukee Brewers are apparently serious about getting into the playoffs this season - they've brought in ace lefthander C.C. Sabathia to bolster their pitching staff.

Originally scheduled to pitch for the Indians in Detroit on Tuesday night, Sabathia is now expected to take to the mound in Milwaukee for his new team against the Rockies. The Brewers acquired Sabathia's services on Sunday night by sending a package of minor-league players to the Tribe (most notably Matt LaPorta, a highly-touted young outfielder).

Sabathia went 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA and 123 strikeouts (over 122 1-3 innings) over the first three months of the season for the Indians, who are mired in last place in the AL Central division. That ERA, though, has been in decline since a rough patch at the start of the year for the lefthander. Since giving up nine earned runs in back-to-back outings on April 11 and April 16 Sabathia hasn't given up more than four earned runs in a start.

And over the last month Sabathia's ERA has dropped a full run, as he's gone 3-1 with two no-decisions in six outings. In his most recent outing, against the White Sox on July 2, Sabathia allowed four earned runs on seven hits over eight innings in a no-decision.

Milwaukee will now have the formidable duo of Sabathia and Ben Sheets atop their rotation as they try to catch the Cubs - and hold off the Cardinals - in the NL Central standings. Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Louis had the three best records in the National League heading into play this week, but only two of them can qualify for the postseason.

The Rockies are scheduled to start Mark Redman on the road on Tuesday night. The lefthander is 2-3 with a 7.05 ERA on the season, and he just re-joined the team for a start on July 3 against Florida. That outing, though, was a pretty good one, as Redman held the opposition to only two earned runs on six hits over six innings in a no-decision.

The Cubs, meanwhile, will send Ryan Dempster (9-3, 3.24 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday to face the Reds' Aaron Harang (3-10, 4.47 ERA) at Wrigley Field. The Cards will be on the road on Tuesday, and they're expected to put Joel Pineiro (2-4, 4.52 ERA) up against Phillies ace Cole Hamels (9-5, 3.22 ERA) in the opener of a three-game set.

Elsewhere around the National League on Tuesday it's Houston at Pittsburgh, Arizona at Washington, San Francisco at the New York Mets, Florida at San Diego, and Atlanta at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jair Jurrjens will battle Chad Billingsley in that last contest.

Over in the American League the top series will be taking place at Yankee Stadium, with New York getting a visit from the first-place Rays. Tampa Bay handled the Red Sox in their big series last week, and they'll be looking to do the same this week against the Yankees. Scott Kazmir (7-3, 2.63 ERA) will be up against Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.22 ERA).

The Red Sox will host the Twins on Tuesday, while someone will have to fill in for Sabathia when the Tribe visits Detroit. Also on the schedule are Baltimore at Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels at Texas, the Chicago White Sox at Kansas City, and Seattle at Oakland. Justin Duchscherer (9-5, 1.96 ERA) will take the mound for the A's in that one.

The only other sports action on Tuesday takes place in the WNBA, where there are five games. Houston and Phoenix will get the day started with a game at 3:30pm ET, with Indiana at Washington, Connecticut at Detroit, and New York at San Antonio beginning in the early evening. A Seattle/Sacramento matchup at 10:00pm ET will close the day.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Manny Ramirez' ground ball single to right scored the only run of Red Sox' 1-0 vs Minnesota Monday, in game between two of the AL's top playoff contenders.

-- Daisuke Matsuzaka has allowed one run in 17 IP in his last three starts, so his shoulder must be better. He didn't look very happy when he was removed from a scoreless game.

-- Mets led 10-1 in sixth inning; game ended with tying run on second base as Wagner barely got the save in a 10-9 win.

-- Phillies beat Mets Friday, with JA Happ vs Santana, then lost the last three games in series. Baseball can be weird.

-- Name of the Day; new Phillies' reliever RJ Swindle

-- Seattle Sonics are no longer; they're the Oklahoma City ?'s playing in summer league with generic black uniforms. Sad.

Tuesday's Den: Runnin' the bases in the National League

Milwaukee just used its first-round pick in last year’s draft to grab CC Sabathia away from the Indians, making the Brewers a strong playoff contender this season. How do different teams approach the draft? Here is a quick, thumbnail sketch of how each NL team drafted last month………

Arizona— Used their ripe farm system last winter to trade for Dan Haren, restocked this year; first four picks were pitchers, six of first seven were college players; in all, took 38 college players out of 51 picks, with 27 pitchers taken in all.

Atlanta—Took 34 college players, but 21 of the 34 came from junior colleges, not 4-year schools; only 13 of their 51 picks were pitchers from 4-year colleges. Their first five picks were either high school or JC kids. In rounds 16-18, took three straight local kids.

Chi Cubs—43 of their 51 picks were college kids, and only nine of those were from junior colleges; took pair of shortstops in first four picks, figuring that a SS can be moved anywhere in infield. Took 28 pitchers overall.

Cincinnati—Took 36 college kids, only three from JC’s; only eight of their top 21 picks were pitchers, but then they took hurlers with 21 of last 29 selections, giving them 29 overall. Their farm system has been good of late (Votto-Bruce-Cueto-Thompson), producing good young nucleus for Dusty Baker.

Colorado—Took only two high school kids in first 31 picks, but then 10 of their last 19 selections were from prep ranks. Mercifully, eight of their first 11 picks were pitchers, hopefully ground ball pitchers. In all, they took 38 college kids (in 50 picks) and 26 pitchers.

Florida—Took pitchers with five of first six picks; six of their first eight selections were HS kids, then in rounds 14-30, every pick was a college player. Oddly, their first player drafted from a Florida high school or college was in 19th round. Go figure.

Houston—Four of their first five picks were high school kids; only three of their first nine picks were pitchers, though they wound up with 25 of them. Overall breakdown: 13 JC kids, 16 high school kids, 23 players from 4-year colleges.

LA Dodgers—Their first pick was high school, kid, but next eight came from college, with four of their first five picks pitchers; only four of the 26 college kids they took came from JCs. Took total of just 22 pitchers, one of lower totals this year.

Milwaukee—Took 34 pitchers, an awful lot; also took four Canadian kids, as well as Lenny Dykstra’s son in the second round. Six of their first nine picks were pitchers. From 16th round on, they took six JC kids, three Canadians, 15 high school kids, only 11 from 4-year colleges.

NY Mets—Took only 20 pitchers (just one in first eight picks, only three in last 12 rounds); of their first eight picks, one is from Puerto Rico, the other seven from 4-year colleges. Only seven of their 51 picks came from high school, and that’s including the kid from Puerto Rico.

Philadelphia—Lot of high school kids (27 of 52 picks) and six of their 25 college kids come from JC ranks. Their first four picks were HS/prep picks, with first three being SS-OF-OF. Lot like Reds, who also play in small park, they eschewed pitchers early, but wound up taking 31—also drafted a kid from Holland

Pittsburgh—First five picks were college kids, only two of first nine were pitchers. Drafted a kid from North Pole, AK in 15th round, then took consecutive players from West Point in rounds 41-42. Took 18 HS kids, 22 pitchers—how did they find the kid from Alaska?

St Louis—With first three picks, went top 25 college guys (Arizona State-Ole Miss-Long Beach); only 10 of their 51 picks were HS kids. Took pair of teammates from three colleges: NC State/Cal-Irvine/Tampa. For some reason, they drafted seven kids from New England.

San Diego—None of first seven picks were pitchers; playing in spacious Petco, do they figure they can make pitchers out of most anyone? Four of their first nine picks came from four different SEC schools; 37 of their 45 picks were college kids, with low total of 21 pitchers taken.

San Francisco—First four picks were C-3B-OF-SS, so another team playing in big ballpark goes hitting first; only four of their first 41 picks were HS kids, then four of their last eight were. 8 of their 39 college picks were JC kids; they also took three kids from Canada.

Washington—First nine picks were evenly divided between HS-JC-4-year kids; they took 13 players from Florida schools, nine from California. Overall, they took 10 JC kids, 24 from 4-year colleges, 16 from HSs. They took 21 pitchers, as they try to rebuild what has been barren farm system.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Cardinals: Joel Pineiro finally got some good run support in his last start against the Mets, and it translated to an 8-7 victory. Piniero had seen the Cardinals score three runs or less in his previous five starts, all resulting in losses. Four of those five games came on the road, where he is just 1-3 with a 5.16 ERA in eight starts this season.

The OVER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - SS Cesar Izturis (.241; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (-200, O/U 9): Ace Cole Hamels will start his first home game against a National League team since June 5th against the Reds. Hamels notched a complete-game shutout in that game, walking three and striking out four. He is a somewhat disappointing 5-4 at home this season with an impressive 2.84 ERA and could be extra motivated after getting snubbed for the NL All-Star team on Sunday in player voting.

Phillies are 1-8 in their last 9 home games.
Phillies are 2-11 in their last 13 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - RP Tom Gordon (5-4; elbow) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees [YES | 7:05 PM ET]

Rays: Scott Kazmir has not been particularly sharp in his last two outings, yet his team has still found a way to win. Kazmir has given up four runs in each of his last two starts despite lasting only five innings each time out, but the Rays have won both times by outscoring the opposition 17-11. He is 3-2 on the road this season with a 3.52 ERA and owns a career mark of 3-3 against the Yankees with a 2.68 ERA.

Rays are 11-2 in their last 13 games overall.
The OVER is 4-1 in Tampa Bay's last 5 games overall. SS

Key Injuries - Jason Bartlett (.256; knee) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Troy Percival (19 saves; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Yankees (-175, O/U 9): Andy Pettitte brings a very impressive 14-4 career mark vs. Tampa Bay into this meeting, although his results at home have certainly left a lot to be desired. Pettitte is only 3-4 at Yankee Stadium in nine starts this season with a 5.03 ERA, and he was hit hard last time out against the Red Sox there on Friday. He gave up six runs and nine hits in 4.2 innings of a 7-0 loss, walking three and striking out two.

Yankees are 2-8 in their last 10 Tuesday games.
The UNDER is 7-2-1 in New York's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Johnny Damon (.319; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Hideki Matsui (.323; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Angels (-140, O/U 10): Joe Saunders is tied for the major-league lead in wins with 12 and was named to the AL All-Star squad on Sunday. If things couldn't get any better for Saunders, his wife is expecting their first child. He is 6-2 on the road this season with a 2.05 ERA but is just 2-2 lifetime vs. Texas with a lofty 6.08 ERA.

Angels are 12-4 in their last 16 road games.
The UNDER is 21-8-2 in LA's last 31 road games.

Key Injuries - C Mike Napoli (.204; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rangers: Rookie Eric Hurley is coming off his first career win against the Phillies at home back on June 29th and is expected to start after being scratched on Saturday with tightness in his hamstring. Hurley has allowed two runs or less in his last three outings - including two at home - but he has not gone more than six innings in any of them.

The OVER is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
The OVER is 10-2-2 in the last 14 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Gerald Laird (.306; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Milton Bradley (.320; knee) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Braves: Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens will try to rebound from his first loss in nine starts when he takes the mound against the Dodgers. Jurrjens surrendered four runs and eight hits in seven innings of a 4-1 home loss to the Phillies last Thursday after failing to allow an earned run in his previous three starts. He is 3-3 on the road this season in eight starts with a 3.35 ERA.

Braves are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
Braves are 2-7 in their last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - SS Omar Infante (.282; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Jeff Bennett (4.28 ERA; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Manny Acosta (4.02 ERA; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-135, O/U 7.5): LA's Chad Billingsley is enjoying one of the best runs of his young career after reeling off wins in each of his last four starts. Billingsley has given up three runs or less in each of those four outings, and he has pitched progressively deeper into the game in the last three. He pitched a season-high eight innings last time out at Houston on Thursday, allowing six hits and two unearned runs with one walk and five strikeouts.

Dodgers are 6-1 in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 12-3 in LA's last 15 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Juan Pierre (.277; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                  Streaking Starting Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Justin Verlander, Detroit (5-9, 4.34)

Justin Verlander may finally be turning his season around.

The Detroit fireballer helped the Tigers to just two wins through his first 13 starts and he allowed at least four runs in eight of those outings, but he has been solid lately even though his number are still lagging behind.

He has given up four runs just once over his last eight outings and struck out 10 Padres in a 5-3 win, his most recent start. Still, Detroit isn't giving him much support to work with and he's throwing 110 pitches per outing routinely, so keep that in mind.

                  Joe Saunders, L.A. Angels (12-4, 3.04)

Joe Saunders will take part in his first MLB All-Star game next week and he has the numbers to back up the honor.

The lefty is tied with Brandon Webb for the league lead in wins and the Angels have lost just four of Saunders' 17 starts all year. Plus, he has won three of his last four starts, allowing just six runs over the streak.

That said, he wasn't thrilled with his last outing that saw him give up all four runs in a 7-4 win over Oakland.

I didn't have much today, but I got some ground balls," Saunders told reporters. "I think I found my curveball in the sixth inning. It was a battle today."

                  Slumping

Kyle Davies, Kansas City (3-1, 4.71)

Davies started strong with Kansas City, but the tables have turned. The Royals have managed to win two of Davies' last three starts, no thanks to him.

He has allowed 16 earned runs over that time, seven of which came in a nasty appearance that lasted only four innings. Two starts before that he allowed five runs and didn't make it out of the second inning only to see his Royals come back to book an 11-10 win over San Francisco from the clubhouse.

                      Wednesday, July 9

Colorado at Milwaukee (8:05 p.m. EDT). CC Sabathia makes his first start for the Brewers since they acquired the Cy Young winner in a trade with Cleveland.

                      Monday

                      - Torii Hunter, Angels, homered twice in Los Angeles' 9-6 victory over Texas.

                      - David Wright, Mets, homered and drove in four runs and New York held on for a 10-9 win over Philadelphia.

                      - John Buck and Mike Aviles, Royals. Each homered in the 10th inning to lift Kansas City to a 7-4 win over Tampa Bay.

                      - Hiroki Kuroda, Dodgers, retired the first 21 batters he faced before giving up a double to lead off the eighth inning. He settled for a one-hitter in Los Angeles' 3-0 win over Atlanta.

                      - Ricky Nolasco, Marlins, allowed five hits in eight innings as Florida beat San Diego 3-1.

                      SIZE MOVE

The Milwaukee Brewers obtained AL Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia in a trade with the Cleveland Indians on Monday, giving up four prospects in an bit to transform themselves from scrappy underdogs to a big, bad pitching powerhouse intent on chasing down the Chicago Cubs and making the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

                      TENS, ANYONE?

Pittsburgh had 10 players get a hit in a 10-7 rout of Houston on Monday night. Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit homered, Adam LaRoche reached base four times and Jason Bay went 2-for-3 in the offensive outburst.

                      SEE CC

Colorado's 4-3 win dampened what had been a festive atmosphere in Milwaukee after the arrival of reigning Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia. The big lefty smiled and waved after teammates let him know he was being shown on the scoreboard video monitor during the game, and received a 30-second standing ovation.

                      SPLENDID SINGLE

Manny Ramirez hit a run-scoring single in the eighth to lift Boston to a 1-0 win over Minnesota on Monday night.

                      STUCK ON 350

Greg Maddux failed to win his 351st game for the 11th straight start with San Diego's 3-1 loss to Florida. Maddux became the ninth big league pitcher to reach 350 victories on May 10. Since then, he's 0-4 with seven no-decisions, even though he's allowed two or fewer earned runs eight times in that streak. San Diego is 6-5 in Mad Dog's last 11 starts.

                      COUNT ON IT

Wes Bankston hit his first career homer to lift Oakland to a 4-3 win over Seattle. Bankston hit a two-run home run off Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn in the fifth inning as Oakland rallied for the win. Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        San Francisco at N.Y. Mets (-115, 7 1/2)

Hey, today's your weekly chance to bet the Giants - otherwise known as Tim Lincecum's turn in the rotation. He has earned more than seven units for bettors on a terrible team that is 13 games below .500 and rarely gets much runs support from his offense.

So it wasn't surprising that the Giants tweaked the rotation around Monday's off day so that Lincecum could go twice before the All-Star break - today and then again in Chicago on Sunday. That means he probably won't get much more than a sniff at the Midsummer Classic.

Mike Pelfry gets the nod for New York today and has been pitching a lot better lately and comes into tonight's game having won straight. That said, he's still just as likely to give up six or seven as he is to pitching a shutout and it wasn't so long ago that he was nearly dropped from the rotation, either.

                        Pick: Giants

                        Atlanta at L.A. Dodgers (-140, 7 1/2)

Wins come in bunches for Chad Billingsley, who starts today for the Dodgers. After coming out of the bullpen following two relief appearances to begin the season, he took four straight losses as a starter before notching his first win of the year. After that he reeled off four wins in five tries, but then the Dodgers lost in each of his next four trips to the hill.

Now Billingsley is on another one of his hot streaks. He has won four straight (allowing just four earned) heading into today's assignment against one of Atlanta's young arms, Jair Jurrjens.

The Braves are having a tough time with all their injuries, while the Dodgers seem to be pulling together under Joe Torre.

                        Pick: Dodgers

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Phillies (-200, O/U 9): Ace Cole Hamels will start his first home game against a National League team since June 5th against the Reds. Hamels notched a complete-game shutout in that game, walking three and striking out four. He is a somewhat disappointing 5-4 at home this season with an impressive 2.84 ERA and could be extra motivated after getting snubbed for the NL All-Star team on Sunday in player voting.
