Varitek is hitting .219 with 7 HR and 27 RBI's

C'mon, did they need a 3rd catcher that badly???

Unless I counted wrong, there are only 2 players from Tampa Bay and no starters from the team with best record in majors-something is decidedly wrong with this system!

Tampa bay's performance has been a total team effort, the rays not having any starters doesn't mean that something is decidedly wrong with this system, fans vote the starters and the average baseball fan might not be able to name 5 guys on the entire Ray team....I think Terry Francona allowing himself to select Varitek as the AL's 3rd catcher shows something needs to be changed.
I think the Nady / McClouth decision is a coin flip, they both deserve a selection.
Couldn't be happier for Josh Hamilton and finally Milton Bradley is starting to play up to his potential.
As wayne said 6 closers 6 starters for the AL & 8 starters with only 4 closers (kerry wood, brian wilson, brad lidge, billy wagner) That would worry me if I was betting on the NL. I think the AL pitching has a considerable advantage, especially being familiar with Yankee stadium (could be tough for guys like brian wilson, tim lincecum, edison volquez, aaron cook, ryan dempster)
I would much rather see Jose Reyes make the team over Christian Guzman, he has no power and no speed what gives?
They could have used Jon Rauch as the washington representive and bumped brian wilson or ryan dempster off the list. Rauch has been nails this year he deserves it more than guzman.

Look out for the Angels, They have 2 staring pitchers and their closer on the all-star team while John Lackey there best pitcher (6-2 1.93 era 0.92 whip) gets to rest for a week. Angels imo are 1 big bat away from meeting the redsox in the ALCS

I think the home field advantage stays in the American league, they have the pitching advantage, a deeper lineup/bench and the experience edge better suited to handle the big stage in NY

                  AL - 8 NL - 4
MVP Josh Hamilton 2 hits, home run 3 rbis
Scott Kazmir Winning pitcher as francona leaves him out for 5 innings running his pitch count up to 90

Wilson leads the N.L. in saves. He has to get a spot. As far as Varitek goes, i agree. Varitek really needs a few days off though so i'm not sure why Francona wouldn't want to leave him off the roster to get some rest.

I agree with Buster Olney. They should start Mariano in Yankee stadium. Let 5 starters each get an inning than let Nathan, Papelbon and K-Rod finish off the last 3

I still disagree and as a Red Sox fan no less.
Tampa Bay is in first place by 4 1/2 games, and they have two players on the team while Red Sox have seven.
Believe me if Sox hadn't won WS last year and Tampa hadn't come out of nowhere, you would not see such a disparity.
ps Of course, the great passion of Red Sox in flooding the ballot boxes gad a "little" to do with the outcome of the voting.

Wagner celebrates his naming to th All-Star game by giving up a 2 run, 2 strike homer to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th.

I think Jose Reyes should've been on the NL team, he's having a better year than Tejada

IF AL did that the NL would struggle to score 2-3 runs. Only pitcher on the AL side that worrries me is george sherrill...kazmir would be GREAT in a closer role
