    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Rookie catcher Clement hit two homers, the second one a dramatic two-run shot off Rodney in bottom of 8th, as Tigers lost 3-2 to Mariners at Safeco late Saturday night.

-- Johan Santana hasn't won a game in 34 days. Sad thing is, he's pitched well, he doesn't get a lot of run support.

-- Since the 2000 season, Jason Kendall has caught 151 more games than anyone else in the major leagues. Big margin.

-- Johnny Damon has played in 1,791 games without going on the DL, most of any active player. He might go on the DL Sunday, if the shoulder he jammed Friday doesn't improve.

-- Name of the Day: Champions Tour golfer Rod Spittle.

-- Tampa Bay's lead in AL East is now up to four games.

Sunday's Den: Taking a look at SEC football, 2008.......

Alabama-- There are 119 D-I football teams; Alabama's rank in last five years: 63-58-10-61-58; a 7-6 mark in Nick Saban's first season isn't what the natives had in mind. John Parker Wilson is a senior QB, and they have eight other returning starters on offense, but they're on third OC and QB coach in the last three seasons- they play Clemson, Arkansas, Georgia before Oct 1st, and then go to Tennessee, LSU after that. Tough schedule.

Arkansas-- Life after McFadden begins for Hog fans, who got a new coach when Bobby Petrino bolted NFL for Fayetteville. Petrino was 44-19 at Louisville; his brother Paul is OC; he was smart enough to hire two Hog alumnus as assistants. With the new offensive system, senior QB Dick was 33-49/404 passing in the spring game. When Hogs face Texas-Alabama-Florida Auburn back-to-back, Petrino might think he's back in the NFL.

Auburn-- Two new coordinators and new QB follow a 9-4 year for Tigers, who were out of top 15 last year for first time in last four seasons (22nd). But Auburn has beaten Alabama the last six years, and gone 5-1 bowling in those years, so they finish strong, sign of good coaching. JC QB Todd grew up with the new offense- he is the better passer, but mobile Burns can run, and has SEC experience. They're on 4th DC in last five years.

Florida-- Surprised that Gators' national title year was its only finish above 17th in last five years, despite 31 wins in last three seasons. Bringing in former Iowa State coach McCarney was a sign of Urban Meyer's unhappiness with the defense; Florida scored 42.5 ppg LY but went 9-4. USC transfer Moody will be asked to take some of onus off QB Tebow. Gators committed 7th-most penalties in country LY- that number has to drop.

Georgia-- Dawgs' rank the last five years: 9-6-8-15-6; when you see Mark Richt is 72-19 in six years in Athens, and see that 16 starters are back from LY's Sugar Bowl champs, then pressure is on for Georgia to win national title. As if SEC schedule isn't hard enough, Dawgs have an October game at Arizona State. Potential problem is that four sophomores may start on the OL. Junior QB Stafford faces schedule with nine '07 bowl teams.

Kentucky-- 66-year old Rich Brooks survived boating accident last week in Oregon; his Wildcats went 8-5 last two years, first time they've done that since 1976-77. Now they have to replace QB Woodson, who threw 71 TD passes last two years- they've got two QB's battling to be starter- both are more mobile than Woodson, but can they lead? Wildcats have best OL they've had under Brooks- look for them to run ball a lot more in 2008.

LSU-- Rank last five years: 1-12-5-8-1; Tigers' QB situation is a mess, with three QBs battling for job- only Hatch has thrown a pass in a game, with one completion. LSU does have four of its starters back on OL, but they lost six defensive starters, as well as DC Pellini, so they figure to regress on defense. They've got really good players on both lines, but with pair of new CBs and a new QB, expect Bayou Bengals to take a step back in 2008.

Ole Miss-- Rebels are only SEC West team to never play in the SEC title game, so they fired Ed Orgeron, an excellent recruiter who was overmatched as a head coach. Houston Nutt hired a former Ole Miss QB (Kent Austin) as his OC; Austin won CFL title in Saskatchewan LY as a head coach- that tells you what his alma mater means to him. Texas transfer Snead is ready for his debut as Rebels' QB, so the offense is ready to open up.

Mississippi State-- Bulldogs finished 39th in country last year, after failing to finish above 80th in four years before that. 8-5 in Starkville was cause for celebration, especially since they had won 11 games combined in previous four years. State won 10-7 in Liberty Bowl, have eight starters back on defense, but need to be more explosive on offense in order to keep their place in the meat grinder that is the SEC.

South Carolina-- We'll see how long Steve Spurrier gives up his play-calling; his son Steve Jr will start season calling them. Gamecocks have ten starters back on defense, so thats a good thing, but Carolina's QBs threw eight INTs in spring game, not so good. Georgia-LSU-Arkansas and Tennessee all are visiting Columbia- thats good. Four starters return on OL. How will this team respond to ending last season with five straight losses?

Tennessee-- David Cutcliffe is now head coach at Duke, so the Vols not only have a new OC, they had to replace three other offensive assistants. Phil Fulmer brought in an outsider, former Richmond HC Clawson to be OC. All four new aides are 40 or younger, so thats good. Eight starters are back on offense and seven on defense, but Vols have been poor stopping the run last two seasons, so new defensive linemen have to emerge.

Vanderbilt-- Its been 25 years since Commodores played in a bowl; they blew a 24-9 4th quarter lead in Knoxville LY, ending season with four losses in row. They lost eight of 11 offensive starters, including all five linemen and tight end, so no way is the blocking going to be as good. They also lost five of front seven on defense, so the bowl-less streak figures to reach 26. This is one team should have scheduled a I-AA opponent, but of course, they didn't. (Miami, OH-Duke-Rice-Wake Forest are their non-SEC opponents)

                  Tips and Trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland Athletics at Chicago White Sox [WGN | 2:05 PM ET]

A's: Rich Harden takes his perfect 5-0 record to U.S. Cellular Field to battle a team he has enjoyed some success against. Harden is 3-2 lifetime vs. Chicago with an impressive 2.92 ERA, and he is 2-0 in four road starts with a 3.32 ERA. He did not get a decision last time out at LA on Tuesday, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings. That marked his shorting outing since May 11th against Texas, and the A's ended up losing that game 5-3 after winning in his previous five trips to the mound.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-115, O/U 7.5): John Danks has absolutely dominated Oakland in two career starts, allowing only one run and 12 hits in 13.2 innings. Danks is just 2-3 at home with a 3.46 ERA but is coming off one of his best starts there, giving up one run to Cleveland in eight strong innings. He tied a season-high with eight strikeouts against the Indians and has walked away with a no-decision in five of his last six outings.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals [3:15 PM ET]

Cubs: Chicago has lost eight straight games with Sean Marshall on the mound even though he has not pitched poorly during that stretch. To be fair, Marshall will be making only his third start of the season after his previous two came in interleague play. He surrendered seven runs in 11.2 innings against the Orioles and White Sox. Marshall has been solid away from home this season, going 0-1 in 10 appearances with a 3.21 ERA.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is on the 15-day DL.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals (-125, O/U 8.5): Former Cub Todd Wellemeyer has not been the same pitcher since coming back from an elbow injury. He has not managed to last more than five innings in his last three starts and was tagged for six runs and 12 hits last time out against the Mets on Tuesday. Wellemeyer faced Chicago at home back on May 4th and allowed two runs and three hits in five innings of a 5-3 victory. He is 5-3 at home with a 4.76 ERA.

Key Injuries - SS Cesar Izturis (.241; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants [4:05 PM ET]

Dodgers: Eric Stults will try to rebound from his worst start of the season after opening the season with a pair of wins. Stults surrendered four runs and five hits in 5.1 innings last time out at Houston on Monday after throwing a complete-game shutout in his previous outing at home. He is 0-1 in two career starts against the Giants with a 6.75 ERA.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Giants (-130, O/U 7.5): Matt Cain has been sensational in his last two home starts, yet he has split a pair of decisions thanks to little run support. Cain has allowed three runs in his last 15 innings at home with four walks and 21 strikeouts. However, the Giants have scored only two runs for him. He is 3-3 in nine home starts overall with a 3.86 ERA.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees [ESPN | 5:05 PM ET]

Red Sox: Tim Wakefield has been fairly solid in his last seven starts yet he only has two wins to show for it. Wakefield has given up three earned runs or less in each of his last seven outings, going at least seven innings each time. In fact, the Red Sox have lost two of his last three starts, and he is just 1-4 on the road with a 4.02 ERA. He has also struggled during his career against the Yankees with a 9-16 mark with a 5.03 ERA.

Red Sox are 4-11 in their last 15 games as an underdog.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Yankees (-160, O/U 9): Deuces are wild for Joba Chamberlain through his first six career starts, as he is 2-2 with a 2.22 ERA. Not surprisingly, he allowed two runs last time out against Texas on Tuesday, going just four innings in a 3-2 loss. Chamberlain has yet to go a full seven innings in any of his starts, and he is 1-1 at home with a 3.18 ERA.

The UNDER is 10-3 in New York's last 13 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Johnny Damon (.319; shoulder) is OUT.
OF Hideki Matsui (.323; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Sunday MLB Gameday

Phillies starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick will be looking for his third straight victory on Sunday afternoon when he takes on the Mets. Here's a look in your MLB Gameday . . .

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, 1:35pm ET
Oliver Perez (6-5, 4.98 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (8-3, 4.58 ERA)

Perez got back into the win column last time out by throwing seven strong innings against the Yankees. The lefthander surrendered just one earned run on three hits in that outing, fanning eight batters. Perez had been knocked around by the Mariners in his previous outing, and overall he's only earned two victories over his past eight starts.

Kendrick held the Braves to three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in a victory earlier in the week, and in his outing prior to that he tossed eight scoreless innings to beat the Athletics. The righthander has now gone 6-1 with three no-decisions over his past 10 outings, and the Phillies are 8-2 in that span. Kendrick's ERA is still high at 4.58.

Oakland Athletics at Chicago White Sox, 2:05pm ET
Rich Harden (5-0, 2.25 ERA) vs. John Danks (5-4, 2.50 ERA)

Harden has given up three or more earned runs in just one of his past nine starts, and he's coming off a win over the Angels in which he gave up only two earned runs on five hits over five innings. The righthander walked one in that outing, and fanned five. On the season Harden's ERA remains at a low 2.25, and he's fanned 88 while walking just 27.

Danks has allowed just two earned runs over his past 26 innings pitched, and he's 2-0 with five no-decisions over his past seven outings. The lefthander had to settle for a no-decision against the Indians in his most recent outing despite surrendering just one earned run on four hits in eight strong innings of work. Danks fanned eight in that game.

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks, 4:10pm ET
Josh Banks (2-3, 2.89 ERA) vs. Randy Johnson (4-7, 5.46 ERA)

Banks has given up just 10 earned runs over his past three starts, but he's still 0-3 over that span. Against the Rockies on Tuesday the righthander allowed four earned runs on six hits over five innings, walking three and striking out four. Banks hasn't picked up a win since May 31, when he beat the Giants by allowing just one run over nine innings.

Johnson is a miserable 0-6 over his last six starts, and the Diamondbacks are 0-8 in the last eight games that he has started for them. The lefthander has surrendered seven earned runs in three of his last four starts, which has bumped his ERA up to 5.46 on the season. Against the Brewers on Tuesday Johnson gave up seven in just 3 2-3 innings.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees, 8:05pm ET
Tim Wakefield (5-6, 3.72 ERA) vs. Joba Chamberlain (2-2, 2.22 ERA)

Wakefield was a hard-luck loser against the Rays on Tuesday night, surrendering just one earned run on five hits over seven innings of work. The righthander also pitched well in his previous outing, holding the Diamondbacks scoreless on two hits over seven innings in a victory. Wakefield is just 2-5 with three no-decisions over his past 10 starts.

Chamberlain lasted just four innings against the Rangers last time out, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out six in that contest. The righthander is 1-0 with four no-decisions in his five starts as a Yankee this season, but he hasn't given up more than two earned runs in any of those outings. Chamberlain has fanned 62 in 52 innings.

                      Sunday Night Baseball
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday night baseball: Red Sox vs. Yankees

After a few weeks of interleague rivalries, none stronger than last Sunday night's Cubs-White Sox clash, we move back to the norm. It's A.L. vs. A.L. and N.L. vs. N.L.

Speaking of rivalries, we have the strongest in baseball and possibly all of sport when the Red Sox travel to the Bronx to face the Yankees in what is a must-see Sunday Night ESPN Game of the Week.

In what is normally a battle for supremacy in the A.L. East, these two teams are both looking up in the standings at the shocking Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Entering play on Saturday, the Sox have the third best record in the American League at 52-37, but sit three games behind the Rays who have the top record in major league baseball. The Yankees stand in third place just three games above .500 in the midst of a fairly disappointing season.

Strikeout machine, Joba Chamberlain, takes the hill for the Yankees. Chamberlain has whiffed 62 batters in just 52.2 innings this season. When a starter is clipping batters at a rate of almost 1.2 per inning, you've got yourself quite a strikeout pitcher. The problem with Chamberlain is, he has also walked 28 batters in just 52.2 innings which is more than one every other inning.

After spending the first two months coming out of the bullpen, Chamberlain has now made six starts with his first being back on June 3rd. He has allowed two earned runs or less in each of those six starts and has been favored by minus 155 or more in five of those six outings. The Yanks have won four of his six starts this season.

His most recent start at home versus Texas was probably his worst. He was a -225 chalk in that game and New York lost 3-2. He threw a whopping 91 pitches and allowed nine base runners in just four innings of work. He's been lights out on the road with an ERA of just 1.11.

Problem is, this one is being played in Yankee Stadium where his ERA this year is 3.18, still very solid. Chamberlain's career ERA, mainly out of the bullpen, is a stellar 1.64. He has never started against the Red Sox. After being called up last year to help out of the bullpen, the Yankees are now an incredible 36-9 in games in which Chamberlain pitches.

His counterpart on Sunday night will be the veteran knuckle baller Tim Wakefield. He has been absolutely lights out over his last seven starts with an ERA of just 1.98. Despite pitching as well as humanly possible during that seven game stretch, Wakefield has a record of just 2-3 in those starts.

The BoSox have lost two of his last three starts but not due to any fault of the knuckle baller who has allowed just four earned runs over those outings. That's surprising as the Boston lineup generally provides a ton of run support. The Sox are hitting .280 as a team which is tops in the A.L. and they?ve scored the second-most runs in the league only behind Texas.

New York has worked Wakefield pretty well over his career. The righty is just 9-16 lifetime against the Bronx Bombers with an ERA of 5.03. He has fared well at Yankee Stadium, however, where his ERA is just 3.66.

Despite being a big hitting club, the Red Sox have been an under play this season. They are 42-39-8 favoring the under. The Yankees have one of the best under the total marks in all of baseball at 52-32-2 (62% under). With two hot starters on the mound on Sunday, the under might be a consideration.

Umpire Lazaro Diaz is scheduled to be behind the plate. That lends even more toward an under play as teams have averaged just nine total runs per game when he has been calling balls and strikes this season. Diaz strikeout to walk ratio is 2.61 and the home team is 9-9 when he is behind the dish.

The "Curse of the Bambino" definitely looks like it is starting to fade. While Boston has picked up a few World Series titles lately, including one in 2007, the Yanks have simply had their number. New York was 32-22 against Boston from 2005 through 2007. This year, however, Boston has already taken five of the seven games played after Friday's series opening win.

Can Boston continue its 2008 winning ways versus the Yanks or does Chamberlain baffle them in his first ever start against the Sox? Either way, it's worth tuning in on Sunday night.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Streaking

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (5-4, 2.50)

Don't be fooled by Danks' average record, the lefty has been puzzling opponents all season. Danks is 1-0 with a spectacular 0.90 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in his past three starts.

The second-year pitcher has conceded just two earned runs in his last 26 IP and is fresh off an eight-strikeout triumph versus the Cleveland Indians. He is 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA in two career starts against Oakland A's.

The White Sox are 3-1 in Danks' last four tilts at U.S. Cellular Field and are 7-0 in their last seven overall in the Windy City.

Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians (11-1, 2.26)

Lee has been the lone bright spot for the Tribe. The lefty is 1-0 in his last three starts with a 1.16 ERA. He is 7-1 with a 2.53 ERA outside Progressive Field.

The lefty, unbeaten in his last eight starts, has led the Tribe to a solid 4-1 mark in its last five road outings. His sole road loss was a 6-4 setback to the Reds on May 18.

Lee is 6-2 all-time against Minnesota, including a two-hit triumph on April 18. The left-hander has a 3.77 career ERA against the Twins. The Tribe is also 10-4 in its last 14 tilts against the Twins.

                          Slumping

Randy Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks (4-7, 5.46)

Johnson has lost his last six straight contests and is two setbacks from matching his longest streak of eight straight, while pitching in Seattle in 1992.
