    Six-pack for Saturday

Phil "S's" top six offensive lines for 2008 college football:

    1) Oklahoma-- Their 130 returning starts on OL are most in America; Sooners ran ball for 191 ypg LY (4.7 yards/carry).

    2) Ohio State-- Four starters back from last year; line is big, with average size 6-5, 318. How would you like to feed them?

    3) Tennessee-- Allowed four sacks LY on 534 pass attempts; their linemen have already started a combined 62 games.

    4) West Virginia-- Ran ball for 297 ypg LY, and have all five starters back, plus a transfer who started for Kansas State.

    5) LSU-- They better be damn good, because Tigers are not real strong at QB; Tigers ran for 214 yards/game last year.

    6) Wisconsin-- Had to use young guys last year because of injuries; now they reap benefit of that, as guys who played last year have that valuable game experience.

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on 5th of July........

      13) Imagine scoring 17 runs and losing? Marlins led 13-4 at one point, but still lost 18-17, giving up two runs in ninth inning, as Rockies won fourth game in a row. They must have locked the humidor at Coors Field and lost the key.

      12) Marlins led 13-9 in fifth inning and still had starting pitcher Olsen in game. Modern baseball. Florida loses a game to Phils in AL East standings, with a second straight walk-off defeat.

      11) How weird was it? Hanley Ramirez batted seven times in a nine-inning game. Guys in slow-pitch softball don't get to bat that many times. Spilborghs and Holliday both hit two taters.

      10) When Arizona overcame 5-0 deficit in ninth inning to beat the Brewers Thursday, it was just second time since 1974 that team rallied from five-run deficit in ninth inning without making even a single out in the ninth.

      9) Momentum doesn't carry over in baseball; Brewers won 9-1 at home Friday against Pittsburgh, while Diamondbacks didn't get a hit for first five innings against Cha Seung Baek and the Padres, losing 3-1. .

      8) You want to see a great throw from leftfield, check out San Diego's Chase Headley gunning out Stephen Drew at plate in top of sixth inning, preserving a 2-0 Padres' lead. Tremendous.

      7) Padres lost pitcher Young with multiple facial fractures few weeks back, when he was hit in the face with a line drive while on the mound; the other night, they lost catcher Barrett, also with multiple facial fractures, after he fouled a ball off his face, in a bizarre accident at the plate. Tough year for the Friars.

      6) I remember, going back to late 80's, when Mike Pagliarulo of Bronx Bombers broke his nose with one of his own foul balls, hit off A's Curt Young (now Oakland pitching coach), but it is not often you see a guy get hit in the face by a batted ball.

      5) Amazing stat of the night; Jake Peavy beat the Dodgers 9-0 back on June 12; since then, San Diego starting pitchers had a combined record of 0-13, 6.21 before Baek's win Friday night.

      4) Excellent week so far for Bob Geren's A's, who are 3-2 after a 7-1 win in Chicago Friday night. Road trip to Anaheim-Chicago is as challenging as it gets in AL, beating Buerhle at the Cell is a good night's work.

      3) Mets had Johan Santana against JA Happ, just up from the minor leagues, but Phillies won, are now 5.5 games up on the Mets in NL East standings. Florida's loss drops them to 65-67 against the Rockies in franchise history.

      2) I am continuously amazed at how popular fireworks are; you get huge crowds everywhere they have fireworks shows, and I'm not really sure why. Too loud for me.

      1) Congrats to old friend Jim Olson, whose horse My Man Lars won 5th race at Belmont Friday, paying a $23.40 mutual. Pretty good 4th of July present for an avid horseman and a great guy.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Red Sox: Justin Masterson had been cruising along, but he's hit a wall in his two most recent outings. After allowing a total of 12 runs in his first six starts, Masterson has allowed eight in his last two. Masterson has been much more effective at Fenway Park than he's been on the road where he's just 1-2 with a 4.58 ERA on the year.

The OVER is 2-0-1 in Masterson's last three starts.
Red Sox are 22-7 in their last 29 Saturday games.
Red Sox are 4-10 in their last 14 games as an underdog.

                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Yankees (-135, O/U 9.5): After going a month between losses, Mike Mussina has now dropped back-to-back games for only the second time this season. Moose hasn't pitched terrible in those outings, allowing six runs in 14 innings of work. However, he hasn't received much run support from the Yankees offense, dropping decisions of 2-1 and 4-2. Mussina has been average in 11 starts at Yankee Stadium, going 5-5 with an ERA of 4.10.

The UNDER is 4-1 the last five times Mussina has taken the mound.
Yankees are 9-4 in Mussina's last 13 starts.
The UNDER is 9-3 in New York's last 12 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Johnny Damon (.317; shoulder) is OUT.
OF Hideki Matsui (.323; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Cubs: Ted Lilly has won four of his last five starts and the Cubs have been victorious the last six times Lilly has taken the hill overall. Lilly hasn't been a dominating pitcher, allowing nine runs over his last 21.2 innings of work. However, he's benefited from solid run support to build a 9-4 record this season. Lilly is pretty much average in every area, including pitching on the road where he is 4-3 with a 4.19 ERA on the year.

The OVER is 5-2 in Lilly's last seven starts.
Cubs are 12-5 in the last 17 meetings.
The OVER is 8-3 in Chicago's last 11 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cardinals (-115, O/U 8.5): Kyle Lohse has been spectacular this season. Lohse hasn't recorded a loss in his last 10 starts, going 7-0 with three no-decisions. Overall, the Cardinals have won eight of the last nine games Lohse has pitched. He's been tough at home, going 5-1 with a strong 2.77 ERA in 10 starts this season. Lohse has allowed two runs or less seven times in his last 10 outings and he's walked just 26 batters in 105.1 innings of work this season.

Cardinals are 8-1 in Lohse's last 9 starts.
The OVER is 11-4-1 in St. Louis' last 15 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - SS Cesar Izturis (.241; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels [9:05 PM ET]

Blue Jays: Roy Halladay is back to his old dominating self, losing just once in his last 10 starts. Over that stretch, Halladay has allowed two runs or less a remarkable seven times. Halladay is only 5-4 on the road this season but he does possess a solid 2.43 ERA away from home. He has, however, had problems with the Angels. In 13 career starts against Anaheim, Halladay is just 5-5 with an unimpressive 4.80 ERA.

The UNDER is 3-1 the last four times Halladay has taken the hill.
Blue Jays are 2-10 in their last 12 road games.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Halladay's last 9 starts on grass.

Key Injuries - OF Shannon Stewart (.240; ankle) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Angels (-130, O/U 7): You won't find a hotter pitcher in baseball right now than John Lackey. He's won five straight outings, allowing just six runs over his last 38.1 innings of work. The Angels have won seven of Lackey's starts this season, as he's allowed more than two runs just once all year. Teams should consider themselves lucky if they score a run off Lackey at Anaheim Stadium. In 30 innings pitched at home this season, Lackey has only allowed five earned runs.

The UNDER is 8-0-1 in his starts this season.
Angels are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
The UNDER is 13-3-2 in LA's last 18 Saturday games.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants [9:05 PM ET]

Dodgers (-125, O/U 8.5): Chan Ho Park did a great job filling in for Hiroki Kuroda and now he gets the call with Brady Penny scratched from his scheduled start. That may not be a bad thing because while Penny has struggled this season, Park has been fantastic in spot duty. In his last two starts, Park struck out 16 and allowed just one run over 11 innings of work. Park has an impressive 2.45 ERA in 23 appearances as a starter and relief pitcher this season.

Dodgers are 22-10 in the last 32 meetings.
The UNDER is 10-2 in LA's last 12 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Juan Pierre (.277; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Giants: When the Giants signed Barry Zito to a huge contract, they weren't envisioning him having a record of 3-12 heading into the All-Star break two years later. Zito has lost three of his last four starts, getting lit up pretty good in those outings. In his last 19.1 innings of work, Zito has allowed 15 runs. Being at home certainly won't help. Zito is 0-8 with a ridiculous 7.33 ERA in nine home starts this season.

Giants are 5-17 in their last 22 home games.
The UNDER is 10-4-1 in San Francisco's last 15 games as an underdog.

                Key Injuries - NONE

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                  MLB

                  Saturday, July 5

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking Starting Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels (6-1, 1.44 ERA)

Lackey has been impressive since returning from a tricep injury that kept him sidelined for the first month of the season.

The righty has 54 strikeouts in nine starts and has not conceded more than two earned runs in his last six starts. Lackey is 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA in his last three outings and is 2-0 at home with a 1.50 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP.

Lackey is 1-0 with a solid 1.20 ERA this season and is 3-2 with a 2.98 ERA in nine-career starts against Toronto. L.A. is 4-1 in Lackey's last five starts against the AL East.

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins (5-6, 3.47)

Slowey is rebounding from a miserable 0-4 start. The right-hander is 2-0 in his last three contests with a 0.43 ERA and 0.76 WHIP and is 5-2 in his last eight.

The second-year starter is coming off a complete against the Brewers. Slowey pitched nine scoreless innings, striking out nine and surrendering a mere three hits.

Slowey, victorious in his last two at home, is 2-3 with a sturdy 3.30 ERA at the Metrodome. Minnesota is also 4-1 in Slowey's last five against a team with a losing record.

                  Slumping

Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants (3-12, 5.99)

Zito is one setback away from matching last season's career-high 13 losses. The left-hander is 1-2 with a soaring 6.59 ERA in his last three tilts, conceding 10 earned runs and nine walks in 11.2 IP.

Zito is 0-8 with a lofty 7.33 ERA at home. He has also conceded at least four earned runs in each of his last four starts at AT&T Park.

San Fran is 2-8 in its last 10 home games, while the Dodgers are 13-3 in their last 16 tilts at AT&T Park.

Aaron Harang, Cincinnati Reds (3-10, 4.47)

Harang conceded 13 earned runs and five home runs in his last three starts. He is 0-1 in that span with a 6.62 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.

Harang is winless with a 6.62 career ERA against the Nats. Washington starter Tim Redding, on the other hand, is a stellar 6-1 in his last seven road tilts and 13-3 in his last 16 overall.

The Reds, winless in their last two road outings, are a meager 2-7 in their last nine outside Cincy. The Nationals, conversely, are 6-1 in their last seven contests against the Reds.

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Saturday, July 5

Toronto at Los Angeles Angels (9:05 p.m. EDT). Roy Halladay (9-6) and the Blue Jays take on John Lackey (6-1) and the Angels. Halladay is coming off a complete-game shutout of the Mariners and Lackey has won his last five starts.

                    STARS

                    Friday

                    - Garrett Atkins and Matt Holliday, Rockies. Atkins had five hits, including a homer, and three RBIs, and Holliday had three hits, including a grand slam and a solo homer, in an 18-17 victory over Florida.

                    - J.J. Hardy, Brewers, went 4-for-5 with a home run for the second straight day and Milwaukee routed Pittsburgh 9-1. Hardy has 10 homers for the year.

                    - Andre Ethier, Dodgers, had three hits including his 10th home run of the year, and drove in three runs in Los Angeles' 10-7 win over San Francisco.

                    - Mike Lowell, Red Sox, hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in a 6-4 victory over the New York Yankees.

                    - Carlos Pena, Rays, hit his first home run in more than a month and drove in a season-high five runs to help Tampa Bay trounce Kansas City 11-2.

                    - Carlos Zambrano, Cubs, gave up four hits in six scoreless innings of a 2-1 victory over St. Louis.

                    - Delmon Young, Twins, went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs in Minnesota's 12-3 win over Cleveland.

                    - Cha Seung Baek, Padres, threw six shutout innings for his first win in seven starts this season as San Diego beat Arizona 5-1.

                    - Shane Victorino, Phillies, had a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning to lift Philadelphia to a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets.

                    ON THE FENCE

Kevin Youkilis' drive squirted out of the webbing of Johnny Damon's glove and bounced up off the top of the left-field wall in the third inning. And bounced. And bounced. The ball came to rest on top of the fence, which was shaking from the impact of the Yankees left fielder crashing into it as he tried to make a leaping catch. Finally, the ball dropped back in and landed near Damon, who was sprawled on the warning track. Youkilis cruised into third base with a two-run triple that tied it at 3 for Boston.

                    COORS CLASSIC

Colorado homered six times to rally from a nine-run deficit for the biggest comeback in franchise history and an 18-17 victory over Florida on Friday night. In the highest-scoring game at Coors Field since the humidor was introduced in 2002, the Rockies and Marlins combined for 35 runs on 43 hits, 21 of them for extra bases with eight home runs. Ryan Spilborghs and Matt Holliday homered twice, and Garrett Atkins and Chris Iannetta once for Colorado. Hanley Ramirez and Matt Treanor hit one each for Florida.

                    FALL FROM GRACE

Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur, hitting only .234, was sent to Double-A Mississippi and told he'd be recalled within three weeks. Francoeur has taken hours of extra batting practice but has been unable to match the power he showed in 2006 when he hit 29 homers or the improved discipline at the plate when he hit .292 last season. Braves general manager Frank Wren and manager Bobby Cox said the move is not a demotion. "We look at it as stepping back for a few days and decompressing and getting his game going again,'' Wren said. "It gives him the ability to do that.''

                    BACK TO WORK

Jered Weaver recovered nicely from a history-making loss to the Dodgers last Saturday, allowing two runs and six hits over 7 1-3 innings in the Los Angeles Angels' 8-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Weaver pitched six hitless innings against the Dodgers, allowing an unearned run on his own fielding error and a sacrifice fly in a 1-0 loss. The Dodgers went the entire game without a hit, making them the fifth team in modern major league history to win a game under those circumstances.

                    AILING

San Diego catcher Michael Barrett was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will require surgery for facial fractures. He may be out six weeks. Barrett left Wednesday night's game at Colorado in the third inning after fouling a ball off his face. ... Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon sprained and bruised his left shoulder when he crashed into the left-field fence trying to catch a drive by Kevin Youkilis. The ball popped out of Damon's glove, bounced several times on top of the fence and finally came back into play for a triple. An MRI revealed a sprained acromioclavicular joint, and Damon said he would be out at least a few days. ... The Athletics placed reliever Keith Foulke on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder.

                    NO SUPPORT

Johan Santana again had nothing to show for a strong outing. Santana gave up two runs and six hits in eight innings and the Mets lost to the Phillies, 3-2. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner is 0-4 in his last six starts despite a 2.48 ERA in that span. Santana has never lost five straight decisions.

                    WARM WELCOME

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa wasn't exactly overjoyed to see his former star center fielder back in town wearing a Chicago Cubs uniform. Miffed by Jim Edmonds' comments that he was happy to be with the Cubs and tired of talking about his past, La Russa said he'd ignore the four-time All-Star in his first visit as an opposing player. The sellout crowd at Busch Stadium did no such thing, giving Edmonds a prolonged ovation before his first at-bat leading off the second. Edmonds stepped out of the box and doffed his helmet before Braden Looper struck him out on a 2-2 pitch.

                    SPEAKING

"When you're in a game like that you never know what's going to happen. You know you have a chance no matter what. We just kept battling and kept coming.'' - Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta, after singling home the winning run off Kevin Gregg in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete Colorado's 18-17 victory over Florida on Friday night.

                    SEASONS

                    July 6

1929 - The St. Louis Cardinals scored 10 runs in the first and fifth innings in beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 28-6, in the second game of a doubleheader. The Cardinals had 28 hits and set an NL record with the 28 runs.

1933 - The first major league All-Star game was played at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The AL, managed by Connie Mack, defeated the NL, managed by John McGraw, 4-2 on Babe Ruth's two-run homer.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer, Bill Lee and Mace Brown combined to limit the AL to one run and seven hits as the NL won the All-Star game 4-1 at Cincinnati's Crosley Field. Lefty Gomez of the New York Yankees suffered his first defeat in four All-Star starts.
1942 - The AL beat the NL 3-1 in the All-Star game at the Polo Grounds on first-inning home runs by Lou Boudreau of the Cleveland Indians and Rudy York of the Detroit Tigers. York's shot came with a man on base.

1949 - Walker Cooper of Cincinnati went 6-for-7, including three home runs and drove in 10 runs, against Chicago at Crosley Field. Cooper also had three singles and scored five times to lead the Reds to a 23-4 rout of the Cubs.

1966 - Boog Powell of the Baltimore Orioles knocked in 11 runs in a doubleheader against the Kansas City A's to tie an AL record. In the first game, Powell hit two home runs, including a grand slam, two doubles and a sacrifice fly to drive in seven runs as the Orioles won 11-0. Powell had four RBIs in the nightcap.

1983 - On the 50th anniversary of the All-Star game, Fred Lynn's grand slam off Atlee Hammaker, the first in All-Star competition, capped a record seven-run third inning. The AL also set a one-game record for runs scored in a 13-3 victory that ended an 11-game NL winning streak. Chicago's Comiskey Park was the site, as it was for the first All-Star game in 1933.

2000 - Keith McDonald of the St. Louis Cardinals became the second player in major league history to homer in his first two at-bats, connecting in the second inning of a 12-6 loss to Cincinnati.

2005 - Florida pitchers retired 28 consecutive batters from the third inning on and set a team record with 22 strikeouts in a 12-inning, 5-4 victory over Milwaukee. A.J. Burnett matched his career high and the individual club record with 14 strikeouts in six innings.

2007 - Justin Morneau homered three times in the second game of a doubleheader to help Minnesota sweep Chicago 20-14 and 12-0. The Twins won the opener behind Jason Kubel's seven RBIs.

Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cubs vs. St. Louis (-115, 9)

Cards manager Tony LaRussa didn't like the way home plate umpire Ted Barrett was calling balls and strikes late in yesterday's game against the Cubs. The fiery manager said Barrett's strike zone was a little too elastic for his liking with the Cards trailing 2-1 in the ninth.

Troy Glaus struck out for the first out of the inning after a couple of strikes that both Glaus and LaRussa questioned.

"Those pitches were not consistenly in the zone that he had called all game long, so you've got a complaint," La Russa said. "What I think is happening is they're sitting in there and complaining about Troy Glaus getting upset and Yaddy looking."

"Check the tape and I think they'll see there was a legitimate gripe."

Dana DeMuth is behind home plate tonight and don't expect the Cards to get any more calls than they did yesterday. DeMuth has a small strike zone, with just 61.9 percent of his calls going for strikes and the home team is a sad 6-12 in his games this year.

                        Pick: Cubs -105

                        Milwaukee vs. Pittsburgh (-150, 9)

Over bettors love home plate umpire Scott Barry. The guy sees an average of more than 11 runs per game and the over has paid out in 10 of his 15 games when he's worn the mask this year. That puts him in the top 10 in the majors when it comes to umpire over/under ratios.

Barry also sees an average of 2.6 home runs per game, which is the second highest for any ump who has called more than three games this year.

Both these teams are also hitting well lately, especially Pittsburgh with 36 runs over its past four games.

                        Pick: over
