    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Matt Garza allowed one run in seven IP and Grant Balfour got the last four outs as Rays' lead in AL East is now at 2.5. Tampa Bay now leads the Bronx Bombers by 7.5 games.

-- Aaron Cook threw a 79-pitch complete game for Colorado, shutting Padres out 4-0 in game that took 1:58 to play.

-- Jeff Kent hit an 11th inning HR to lift Dodgers over Astros 7-6; LA picks up a game on 42-42 Arizona, who lost last nite.

-- Matt Cain blanked Cubs for eight innings, striking out 10 as Giants continued Wee Bears' road woes, winning 2-1.

-- Baron Davis signed with the Clippers late last night; don't mean to be negative, but this has all makings of a disaster; an injury-prone guy with his long term contract all sewn up, playing for a cursed franchise. This won't end well.

-- A belated Happy Canada Day to all our friends north of the border-- hope you had a good holiday.

Wednesday's List of 13: Runnin' bases: midterm AL grades

Orioles—Have skipper with 2,700+ minor league games under his belt and it shows; they work harder in pre-game than most teams, they’re surprisingly over .500 at halfway mark. Need more out of their starting pitchers to take strain off of solid bullpen. Grade: B+.

Red Sox—Ortiz is out, there is concern for Matsuzaka’s arm, Varitek is hitting .220, but young kids are helping out and Drew has stepped up game. For all their problems, still very close to first place and are the Wild Card team right now. Grade: B.

White Sox— Quentin has been great, Buerhle is anchoring starting rotation; Sox have been rolling since Ozzie flipped his lid after getting swept in St Pete. Very tough at home; they need to get Konerko hitting again and keep Crede’s back in one piece. Grade: A-.

Indians—Could be sellers at end of month; Sabathia is going to be free agent, so they should get decent return for him if they ship him out. Victor Martinez’ injury hasn’t helped and Hafner’s bum shoulder has been nightmare. Cliff Lee is having an awesome season, but he doesn’t have much company. Grade: D.

Tigers— Detroit has won 18 of last 22 games and is rolling towards contention, after a horrendous start to season. Now have youngsters Galarraga, Bonine in rotation—they’ll need to get Willis (currently in Class A) to contribute before end of season, or else. Grade: C, but rising.

Royals—New manager Hillman has instilled life in franchise that badly needed it; they’re won seven of last nine games, have solid starters in Meche-Greinke and a good closer in Soria. Olivo has thrown out more than half the runners trying to steal against him, and has been a timely hitter. Grade: B-.

Angels—Struggling with bats, but 3.5 games up in AL West, despite missing Lackey for much of first half. Anderson is in decline, Figgins has been hurt, and back end of bullpen has been horrid, but K-Rod already has 30+ saves and Kotchman has become solid contributor. Grade: B+

Twins—Gave away Hunter/Santana/Bartlett/Garza, getting Gomez-Harris-Young in return, Liriano has made only three starts before getting sent to AAA, and still, they’re just 1.5 games out of first. Casilla has been pleasant surprise at 2B and Slowey is emerging into terrific starter. Grade: A.

Bronx—Chamberlain became a starter after Kennedy/Hughes were a disaster; Matsui is hurt, Posada was hurt, and Cano is having bad year. Not sure what they have to give Cleveland for Sabathia, but right now, they’re not looking good to get in the playoffs, something Joe Torre always did. Grade: C-.

A’s—No power, not much speed, but they catch the ball real well and pitching has held up to point where they’re just 3.5 games out of first and ready to pounce should Angels falter. Haven’t gotten much out of Blanton, but Duchscherer has rapidly emerged into a very unlikely Cy Young candidate. Grade: A.

Mariners—Unmitigated horror in northwest; McLaren got canned as manager before he had 162 games under his belt. Bedard has a bad back and no one likes him. Ichiro’s stats are down and is being criticized for spotty effort. They might release Sexson and Vidro, Otherwise, everything’s great. Grade: F.

Rays—Last year’s bullpen had worst ERA in fifty years; this year’s has been unsinkable, backing up very good starting pitching, all of which has been helped by terrific fielding. Offense is actually down from last year, but rookie Longoria is proving to be real deal. Iwamure has no errors in first year at 2B. Grade: A+.

Rangers—One of most fun teams to watch, because they can really rake; Kinsler-Young-Hamilton-Bradley are as fearsome a foursome at top of lineup as anyone in majors. Problem is, none of them pitch, and that is why they’re struggling to get over .500. CJ Wilson has been pretty good closer. Grade: B+.

Blue Jays—Ugliness north of border; DH got fired first, then manager got fired, then the GM ripped Adam Dunn for no reason, all while $100M Jays were looking up at both Rays and Orioles. Roy Halladay is as good a pitcher as there is, but he doesn’t hit, and Toronto needs more offense. Grade: F.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

              MLB

              Wednesday, July 2

We will update when projected scores are available.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [ESPN | 7:10 PM ET]

Red Sox: After an awful performance in his first game back from the DL, Daisuke Matsuzaka rebounded in his next outing against the Astros, pitching five scoreless innings. Dice-K has been a stud on the road this season, going a perfect 4-0 with a stellar 2.20 ERA in six starts. However, he's struggled against the Rays. Matsuzaka is just 1-3 in five starts versus Tampa.

The UNDER is 3-0-1 in Dice-K's last four starts on the road.
Red Sox are 3-9 in their last 12 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - OF Coco Crisp (.270; suspension) is OUT until July 3.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-150, O/U 8): Scott Kazmir was close to unhittable in his first eight starts of the year but he's come back to earth a little bit in his two most recent outings. In his last 10.2 innings of work, Kazmir has allowed seven runs. He gave up a total of eight runs in his prior eight starts. Kazmir lost his last outing at home but still possesses a remarkable 1.24 ERA at Tropicana Field. In 18 career starts against Boston, Kazmir is 6-6 with a solid 2.82 ERA. The UNDER is 5-1 in Kazmir's six home starts this season.

Rays are 27-7 in their last 34 games on turf.
The UNDER is 11-4-1 in Tampa Bay's last 16 home games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox [8:11 PM ET]

Indians: After a terrible start to the season, C.C. Sabathia is beginning to heat up. He's 3-0 with one no-decision in his last four starts, with the Tribe coming out victorious in all four of those games. In his last 32 innings of work, Sabathia has allowed just four runs. Sabathia was on the losing end earlier this season against the White Sox but he pitched well, allowing just two runs over seven innings. That kind of performance wasn't a surprise seeing that C.C. is 14-4 with a 3.61 ERA in 25 career starts versus the Palehose. The UNDER is 7-3 the last 10 times Sabathia has taken the hill.

Key Injuries - C Victor Martinez (.278; elbow surgery) is out 6-8 weeks.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-110, O/U 8): Jose Contreras saw a personal three game slide come to an end his last time out against the Cubs. Contreras picked up the win after holding the high-powered Cubs offense to three runs over six innings. Contreras has experienced success against the Indians over the years, going 5-2 with a strong 3.14 ERA in 11 career starts. He beat the Tribe earlier this season, allowing just one run in six innings of work. The OVER is 3-1 in Contreras' last four starts.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.215; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Mets at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Mets: Pedro Martinez is still trying to regain the form that made him one of the most feared pitchers in baseball. So far this season, the only people who fear Pedro are Mets fans every time he takes the mound. In his last two starts, Martinez has been blasted for 15 hits and 12 runs in just 10 innings of work. Pedro has allowed four runs or more in four of his six starts this season. In 10 career starts versus the Cardinals, Martinez is 4-4 with a 3.27 ERA.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals (-115, O/U 9): The last time Joel Pineiro recorded a win the NFL was in the middle of its draft back on April 29. The Cardinals have lost six straight with Pineiro on the mound but he hasn't pitched awful every time out. There is some good news for St. Louis backers tonight. Even though Pineiro has only won twice in his last 10 starts, he's actually allowed three runs or less seven times over that stretch. The UNDER is 4-1 in Pineiro's last five starts.

Key Injuries - SS Cesar Izturis (.241; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Cubs (-135, O/U 8): Ryan Dempster lost his first game in over a month his last time out against the White Sox. Dempster lasted just 2.1 innings after being battered for eight runs on seven hits, in what was by far his worst outing of the season. The Giants catch a break tonight because Dempster is much more effective at Wrigley Field than on the road where he's 0-3 with a 4.19 ERA. Also, Dempster is just 2-6 in his career versus the Giants.

Cubs are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3-1 in Marquis' last 12 road starts.

Key Injuries - 3B Aramis Ramirez (.289; personal) is OUT 2 more games.
OF Reed Johnson (.271; back) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is on the 15-day DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Giants: You'll have to excuse Giants fans if they are a little uneasy tonight. That's because Kevin Correia has started eight games for San Fran this year and the Giants have lost seven of them. Correia is actually coming off a solid performance versus Oakland where he allowed just one run over five innings. You can expect the Giants bullpen to play a large role tonight. Correia has gone past six innings just once this season.

Giants are 8-20 in their last 28 home games.
Giants are 2-6 in Cain's last 8 Tuesday starts.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                MLB

                Wednesday, July 2

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking Starting Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                C.C. Sabathia Cleveland (6-8, 3.78)

It's safe to say Sabathia's early-season struggles are over. Cleveland's ace has helped the club to four straight victories, during which he has only allowed four total runs while striking out 36.

Sabathia's hot streak is only adding fuel to burning trade rumors that expect him to end up with a contender as the trade deadline looms at the end of the month. The 6-foot-7, 290-pounder has three complete games already this season.

                Ricky Nolasco Florida (8-4, 4.05)

The Marlins didn't really know what to expect from Nolasco after he missed most of last season with arm problems. Now all of a sudden he's one of the nastiest starters in the National League.

Nolasco has helped Florida to eight wins in his last 10 starts, allowing more than three runs just once over that stretch.

"You can almost say he's back to form," manager Fredi Goznalez told reporters. "His velocity is up and his command on all his pitches has been very good."

                Slumping

                Micah Owings Arizona (6-7, 5.28)

Owings has just one win in his last six starts and has allowed at least four runs in four of those outings.

To make matters worse, he'll be pitching at less than 100 percent after he hurt his back in his last start while covering first base and had to hit the showers after four innings.

"I wish I could explain it," Owings told reporters. "When I went down for the ball, my lower right side and upper glute just locked up on me. I've never had anything like that happen."

                  SCOREBOARD

                  Wednesday, July 2

Boston at Tampa Bay (7:10 p.m.) Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-1, 3.21 ERA) faces the Rays' Scott Kazmir (7-3, 2.28) in a matchup between the top two teams in the AL East.

                  STARS

                  Tuesday

                  - Shane Victorino, Phillies, hit a home run and drove in four runs and Philadelphia beat Atlanta 8-3 to remain unbeaten at Turner Field this season.

                  - Ronnie Belliard, Nationals, hit his second career grand slam to help Washington beat Florida 9-6.

                  - Matt Garza, Rays, pitched seven strong innings in his first outing since throwing a one-hitter, and Tampa Bay beat Boston 3-1.

                  - J.J. Hardy, Brewers, homered twice and Milwaukee defeated the Diamondbacks 8-6

                  - Aaron Cook, Rockies, needed just 79 pitches to shut out the Padres 4-0, helping Colorado snap an eight-game losing streak.

                  - David Wright, Mets, hit his 16th homer and led a 14-hit attack in New York's 7-4 win over St. Louis.

                  - Matt Cain, Giants, struck out 10 and gave up only two hits in eight shutout innings of San Francisco's 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

                  WELCOME BACK

Chipper Jones, expected to be placed on the disabled list Tuesday, instead was back in the lineup for the Atlanta Braves. Jones missed eight straight starts with a strained right quadriceps. Because of the continued discomfort, Jones feared he would be placed on the DL as the Braves opened an important series against the NL East-leading Phillies on Tuesday night. Instead, he was "very surprised'' he didn't feel the expected discomfort while stretching and then running before the game. Manager Bobby Cox put him in the lineup, along with center fielder Mark Kotsay, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list.

                  WELCOME BACK, PART II

The Giants recalled former backup catcher Eliezer Alfonzo from Triple-A Fresno, nine days after he completed a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Alfonzo arrived fit, healthy and ready for a clean slate, insisting he never knowingly took steroids but did take medicine in December while home in Venezuela for bronchitis.

                  OUCH!

The Diamondbacks placed outfielder Eric Byrnes and catcher Chris Snyder on the 15-day disabled list. Byrnes is out with a strained left hamstring, Snyder with a left testicular fracture. For Byrnes, the move comes eight days after he came off the DL, where he spent a month with injuries to both hamstrings. Snyder left Monday night's game after being hit in the groin area by a foul tip and underwent an MRI on Tuesday.

                  PADRE PUMMELER

Colorado's Aaron Cook threw his first career shutout, needing just 79 pitches to beat the Padres 4-0. Since 2004, Cook is 8-1 with a 1.52 ERA in 11 starts against San Diego, and hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of those starts.

                  SOLID DEBUT

Collin Balester gave up one hit and struck out three in five innings to become the first Nationals starting pitcher to win his big league debut in a 9-6 win over the Marlins. Balester became the first franchise starter to win his debut since Dan Smith on June 8, 1999, when the club was still in Montreal.

                  NOT CLOSING TIME

Mariano Rivera gave up the winning run in the ninth inning in the Yankees' 3-2 loss to Texas. He has given up four runs this season, none of them in a save opportunity.

                  MILITARY TELECAST

On Wednesday night, thousands of military members will be able to watch the San Francisco Giants host the Chicago Cubs in a special telecast done as a tribute leading up to July 4. The Giants and Comcast SportsNet Bay Area will honor members of the Armed Forces and their families on "Salute to the Military Night.'' The game will be broadcast on American Forces Network and available to 176 countries and more than 200 U.S. Navy ships.

                  MILESTONE BALL*

Now branded with an asterisk, the ball Barry Bonds launched for his record 756th home run nearly a year ago landed in the Hall of Fame. Fashion designer Marc Ecko, who paid $752,467 for the prize in an online auction in September, asked fans to vote in an Internet poll on what he should do with the ball. The winner: Brand it with an asterisk, to reflect the steroid allegations surrounding Bonds, and give it to the Hall. The ball indeed was marked, with the five-pronged asterisk dye-cut into the cowhide, from stitch-to-stitch where "Major League Baseball'' is printed.

                  LONG GONE

Alex Gordon of the Royals hit a first-inning home run that cleared the 25-foot scoreboard in right field and traveled an estimated 430 feet. It was the 45th home run in the 17-year history of Camden Yards to land on Eutaw Street, the fifth this season. The Orioles won 7-5.

                  SNAPPED

The Royals' six-game road winning streak ended with a 7-5 loss at Baltimore. ... The Rockies snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over the Padres.

                  STATS

Alex Gordon of the Royals hit the 45th home run in the 17-year history of Camden Yards to land on Eutaw Street, the fifth this season. ... Mariano Rivera has allowed all four of his runs this season in non-save situations. ... The Phillies are 13-4 in Kyle Kendrick's starts this season after a 8-3 win over the Braves. ... With his 20th homer, Pat Burrell joined Mike Schmidt as the only Phillies with 20 or more homers in eight straight seasons. Schmidt hit at least 20 homers in eight straight seasons (1974-87).

                  SPEAKING

"(The media) brings it up a lot, so it's hard not to think about. I know I've got two starts left before the All-Star break. I can't sit on what I've done this year; I've got to keep moving forward.'' - Rockies starter Aaron Cook discussing his All-Star chances.

                  SEASONS

                  July 2

1903 - Washington outfielder Ed Delahanty went over a railroad bridge at Niagara Falls and drowned. The exact circumstances of his death were never determined.

1909 - The Chicago White Sox stole 12 bases, including home plate three times, in a 15-3 rout of the St. Louis Browns.

1930 - Chicago outfielder Carl Reynolds homered in the first, second and third innings, leading the White Sox to a 15-4 win over the New York Yankees. Reynolds, the second player in history to hit home runs in three consecutive innings, had two inside-the-park homers.

1933 - Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 in an 18-inning game. He allowed six hits and no walks. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cardinals were blanked 1-0, with Roy Parmelee outdueling Dizzy Dean.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees hit a home run to extend his consecutive game hitting streak to 45 games, surpassing Willie Keeler's record of 44 straight games for the Orioles in 1897.

1963 - Juan Marichal of San Francisco beat Warren Spahn and the Milwaukee Braves 1-0 in 16 innings on Willie Mays' homer.

1986 - Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox fell short of a record-tying 15th consecutive winning decision when the Toronto Blue Jays scored three runs in the eighth inning for a 4-2 victory.

1995 - Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first Japanese player picked for baseball's All-Star game. Nomo was the NL's leader in strikeouts and second in ERA.

2002 - A record 62 home runs were hit in the major leagues, breaking the mark of 57 set April 7, 2000. Raul Ibanez homered twice for Kansas City, making him the record ninth player to hit at least two in a game. San Francisco's Damon Minor, Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Reggie Sanders each homered twice as the Giants became the 16th team to have three players with multiple homers in a game, an 18-5 win against Colorado.

2007 - Roger Clemens reached a rare milestone, pitching eight innings of two-hit ball to earn his 350th career win and lead the New York Yankees past Minnesota 5-1. Clemens became the first major leaguer to win 350 games since Hall of Famer Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves accomplished the feat in 1963.

Today's birthdays: Angel Pagan 27; Nyjer Morgan 28; Greg Dobbs 30; Sean Casey 34; So Taguchi 39.

Hot Lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland at Chicago White Sox (-110, 8)

Last-place Cleveland has dropped four straight and seven of its last nine games to fall 11 1/2 games behind the White Sox.

"In the position we're in trying to play catchup, you can't afford to let these games get away. We had an opportunity and I let it slip away," Indians closer Joe Borowski said after suffering his fourth blown save in 10 chances Tuesday.

With the Indians languishing at the bottom of the division, Sabathia (6-8, 3.78 ERA) has become the topic of trade rumors. The left-hander, who hasn't discussed whether he'll opt for free agency after the season, has succeeded in spite of those distractions. He has led the Indians to four straight wins, going 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in that span while fanning at least 10 in each of his last three outings.

The left-hander struck out a season high-tying 11 and scattered four hits in eight innings of a 6-0 home win over Cincinnati on Friday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner hasn't had much trouble against the White Sox, going 14-4 with a 3.61 ERA in 25 career starts.

However, he'll be trying to avoid back-to-back losses to them for the first time after he gave up two runs and seven hits over seven innings in a 4-1 defeat on May 20 at U.S. Cellular Field - his first loss to Chicago in 11 starts.

Jose Contreras (7-6, 3.99), on the mound for the White Sox in that outing, looks to record a fourth straight victory over the Indians. In winning his last two starts against them, he has allowed one run and eight hits, while striking out nine in 12 2/3 innings.

                          Pick: Indians

                          Milwaukee at Arizona (-130, 9)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are still on top of the NL West, but things couldn't be going much worse lately.

The Diamondbacks will be trying to avoid falling under .500 on Wednesday as they continue a four-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at Chase Field.

Arizona lost for the 11th time in 16 games on Tuesday, falling 8-6 to Milwaukee (45-38). The loss knocked the Diamondbacks back to 42-42 - the third time in five games they have fallen to .500.

Arizona has managed to win the last two times they have been at the break-even mark. But the Diamondbacks are once again on the verge of falling under .500 for the first time since they were 1-2.

Injury concerns have also thrown Wednesday's starting assignment into doubt. Micah Owings (6-7, 5.18 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball, but he tweaked his gluteus muscle in his last start on Friday and might not be able to go.

Manager Bob Melvin said that righty Yusmeiro Petit will take the mound if Owings can't.

Owings is 0-5 with an 8.28 ERA in six starts since his last win on May 25 in Atlanta. He gave up three runs in four innings of Friday's 3-1 loss in Florida.

Owings has lost both of his previous starts against the Brewers, posting an 8.00 ERA in those outings, both at Miller Park. He gave up five runs in three innings of a 10-1 loss in Milwaukee on June 4.

                          Pick: Brewers

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Indians are 8-22 in their last 30 games as an underdog.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Cleveland's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Victor Martinez (.278; elbow surgery) is out 6-8 weeks.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

White Sox (-115, O/U 8): Jose Contreras saw a personal three game slide come to an end his last time out against the Cubs.

White Sox are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2 in Chicago's last 8 home games.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.215; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

New York Mets at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Mets: Pedro Martinez is still trying to regain the form that made him one of the most feared pitchers in baseball. So far this season, the only people who fear Pedro are Mets fans every time he takes the mound. In his last two starts, Martinez has been blasted for 15 hits and 12 runs in just 10 innings of work. Pedro has allowed four runs or more in four of his six starts this season. In 10 career starts versus the Cardinals, Martinez is 4-4 with a 3.27 ERA.

Mets are 5-12 in Martinez's last 17 road starts.
The OVER is 9-4-4 in New York's last 17 games following a win.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cardinals (-115, O/U 9): The last time Joel Pineiro recorded a win the NFL was in the middle of its draft back on April 29. The Cardinals have lost six straight with Pineiro on the mound but he hasn't pitched awful every time out. There is some good news for St. Louis backers tonight. Even though Pineiro has only won twice in his last 10 starts, he's actually allowed three runs or less seven times over that stretch. The UNDER is 4-1 in Pineiro's last five starts.

Cardinals are 10-4 in their last 14 Wednesday games.
The OVER is 9-4-1 in St. Louis' last 14 games as a favorite.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Giants: You'll have to excuse Giants fans if they are a little uneasy tonight. That's because Kevin Correia has started eight games for San Fran this year and the Giants have lost seven of them. Correia is actually coming off a solid performance versus Oakland where he allowed just one run over five innings. You can expect the Giants bullpen to play a large role tonight. Correia has gone past six innings just once this season.

Giants are 8-20 in their last 28 home games.
Giants are 2-6 in Cain's last 8 Tuesday starts.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3
