    Weekend Sports Preview

The Arena Football League playoffs kick off this weekend, but they’ll have to share the stage with interleague play in MLB, WNBA, the start of the CFL season, and NASCAR.

Interleague play concludes in Major League Baseball this weekend, as the American League and National League face off for the last time until the All-Star Game and the World Series.

The NL teams that visit AL parks and get to use a DH this weekend include the Cubs at the White Sox, Cincinnati at Cleveland, Colorado at Detroit, Atlanta at Toronto, Milwaukee at Minnesota, Philadelphia at Texas, St. Louis at Kansas City and San Francisco at Oakland.

The AL teams that will lose the DH and have to send their pitchers to the plate include Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh, Baltimore at Washington, Boston at Houston and Seattle at San Diego.

The Mets and Yankees play four games in three days this weekend including a doubleheader on Friday. This is no ordinary doubleheader though, as Game 1 will be played at Yankee Stadium, while Game 2 goes at Shea Stadium. The following games in the series on Saturday and Sunday will both be played at Shea.

The lone all-NL matchup on the weekend schedule is Arizona at Florida.

The Arena Football League playoffs get started on Friday night as the hunt for Arena Bowl XXII begins. Playoffs begin on Friday when National Conference No. 6 seed New York takes on No. 3 seed Dallas (-7.5). On Saturday, American Conference No. 5 seed Colorado visits No. 4 seed Utah. (-6.5) The rest of the opening round continues on Monday night.

There’s even more gridiron action this weekend, as the Canadian Football League returns for their new season. Week 1 officially kicked off on Thursday night with a doubleheader and it continues through Friday and Saturday. On Friday Toronto heads to Winnipeg in a big Eastern Conference battle, while on Saturday the Edmonton Eskimos face the defending Grey Cup champs from Saskatchewan.

On the court this weekend the WNBA has one game on Friday night as winless Atlanta drops in on league-best Connecticut. There are four more games on Saturday, including Minnesota at San Antonio, Detroit at Chicago, Indiana at Houston and New York at Sacramento. The weekend concludes on Sunday with three games including Phoenix at Connecticut, Atlanta at Detroit and Washington at Seattle.

On the track this weekend NASCAR heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. Kyle Busch increased his points lead with a win at Infineon last week and he’ll once again be the favorite this weekend. Denny Hamlin won this race at New Hampshire last year and he’ll be one to watch again.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Matt Garza had a no-hitter going against Florida before a 7th-inning homer by Hanley Ramirez gave Marlins their only hit in a 6-1 Tampa win; Rays swept three straight from Fish.

-- Twins won last nine games, are 12-3 in interleague play so far, and their best starting pitcher is still in minor leagues.

-- Shane Victorino was 2-3 against A's Thursday; rest of the Phillies went 1-27, as Rich Harden was dominant in 5-0 win.

-- Danks threw six shutout innings as White Sox blanked the Dodgers, keeping LA 3.5 games out of first in NL West.

-- Cliff Lee's magical season continued as he allowed Giants just one run in eight innings of 4-1 win.

-- Calgary, Montreal both had double-digit wins as CFL 2008 got underway Thursday night north of the border.

Friday's List of 13: Hanging around with the NBA Draft......

The NBA Draft might be the highlight of the NBA year; there are no referees mentioned, no clips of Kobe Bryant berating a teammate, then sucking up to TV reporters, just optimism from each of the league's franchises, even the Knicks. Here are my thoughts after Thursday night's festivities........

        13) First of all, a complaint; why do I have to wait until after the draft to find out about the Love/Mayo trade? Wouldn't this be a good thing to discuss during the draft? It kind of makes just about every word spoken during the telecast irrelevant, when the trades are announced after the fact.

        12) By the way, OJ Mayo wears glasses? And his real name is Ovinton J'Anthony? Why don't people name their kids Bill, Ed, or Joe anymore? Is it too easy?

        11) Why is Michael Beasley a character risk? Because he went to a lot of high schools? Amare Stoudemire went to six of them and he seems to be doing OK. Leave the kid alone.

        10) Clippers have had 19 lottery picks, four more than any team in the NBA; it doesn't seem to have helped much.

        9) Jerryd Bayless shot a hole-in-one when he was 10; he also was hurt a lot last year, in his only season of college ball. Not real crazy about Mr. Bayless, but at least he's a good golfer, a lot like Bulls' coach Vinny Del Negro (a single handicapper).

        8) Love the Celtics going for Bill Walker; he's had lot of lousy luck in his career so far; just hope his knee is OK-- if it is, he'll help Boston bigtime.

        7) On the other hand, Celtics drafted the prolific JR Giddens of New Mexico; the graphic on him says he needs to work on his "professionalism". That has to be a huge criticism, right? His skills don't need work, his attitude does. Uh-oh. Once he gets his pockets full of money, that should improve a lot.

        6) Brook Lopez cost himself a small fortune by coming out of school early; he damn sure would have been picked higher in next year's draft. His brother was picked surprisingly high (15).

        5) Nets' trade of Richard Jefferson is pre-cursor to their signing Lebron James two years from now; they're clearing cap space.

        4) No one has ever described me as "bouncy" or as having "a huge upside". A huge backside maybe, but not much upside.

        3) When I hear Stephen A. Smith on TV, it means one thing; it is time to switch channels to see how the baseball is doing.

        2) How about the poor dude who has to come out and say all the foreigners' names in second round, after David Stern goes home? Stern couldn't stay an extra couple of hours-- he's the damn commissioner, what else does he have to do, other than find new ways to make the people of Seattle miserable?

        1) The Van Gundy/Jackson tandem was very good, as usual; Jay Bilas was preachy, as always. John Calipari didn't look too thrilled wth Doris Burke's interview with him. Bob Huggins and Ben Howland were there but didn't get interviewed on TV, at least not while I was watching, which was 90% of the time. The Italain kid answered every question, "I want to help the team."

The NBA; its offseason is always fantastic.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox [WGN | 4:05 PM ET]

Cubs: With Carlos Zambrano on the mend, Ryan Dempster takes over as the Cubs ace for the time being and the honor is well deserved. Dempster is 9-2 on the season and hasn't lost a decision since May 20. Dempster has been phenomenal in his last six outings, allowing just 11 runs in his last 39.1 innings of work. Dempster's two losses have come on the road this season, although he does possesses an ERA of 2.48 in six starts.

Cubs are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 14-4-2 in Chicago's last 20 Friday games.

Key Injuries - OF Kosuke Fukudome (.299; calf) is questionable.
OF Reed Johnson (.271; back) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is out at least 6 weeks.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-110, O/U 8.5): Jose Contreras has been hammered over his last three starts. In just 16 innings on the mound, Contreras gave up an unacceptable 30 hits and 19 runs. He's been good at home on the year, sporting a 3.04 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in seven starts. He's allowed just eight runs in his last four starts at home. Surprisingly, the UNDER is the way to go when Contreras pitches. The UNDER is 8-2 in his last 10 starts.

White Sox are 12-2 in their last 14 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings at U.S. Cellular Field.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.215; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Philadelphia Phillies at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Phillies (-115, O/U 10.5): Phillies fans must cringe every time Brett Myers takes the mound. They are just 1-9 overall in his last 10 starts and that includes four straight losses. Myers has been absolutely blistered in his last three starts, giving up 15 runs in just 19 innings pitched. Philadelphia has had no chance in Myers' road starts this year. He's 0-6 with a 7.54 ERA in eight starts away from home. Even worse, teams are hitting a robust .345 against him over that stretch.

Phillies are 1-7 in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-0 in Philadelphia's last 6 games overall.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rangers: Kason Gabbard hasn't pitched great in his two starts since coming off the DL but he's managed to come up with a split in games against the Mets and Nationals. This will be Gabbard's first start at home since May 18, where he has an ERA of 5.63 in three appearances this season. The OVER is 7-4 in Gabbard's 11 starts this season and has cashed in two of his three outings at home.

Rangers are 8-3 in their last 11 interleague home games.
The OVER is 7-2 in Texas' last 9 games as a home underdog.

Key Injuries - OF Josh Hamilton (.312; knee) is expected to play.
OF Milton Bradley (.330; quad) is expected to play.
C Gerald Laird (.306; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros [NESN | 8:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-160, O/U 9.5): Daisuke Matsuzaka was a perfect 8-0 before going on the DL but he was anything but perfect in his first start back against the Cardinals. He lasted just one inning versus St. Louis, allowing an alarming seven runs. The Red Sox will be looking for a much better effort out of Dice-K this time around. Matsuzaka is still unbeaten on the road with a record of 3-0 to go along with a 2.60 ERA. Two of Dice-K's last three starts have easily gone OVER the total.

Red Sox are 51-14 in their last 65 interleague games.
The OVER is 17-8-3 in Boston's last 28 Friday games.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; hand) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Mike Timlin (3-3; knee) is on the 15-day DL).

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Astros: Now that Shawn Chacon is on a permanent vacation for beating up Houston's GM, Runelvys Hernandez gets his turn in the Astros rotation. Hernandez was called up from Class AAA Round Rock to face the Red Sox tonight but his spot in the rotation is far from secure. Hernandez gets his chance to prove he belongs for a Houston pitching staff in disarray right now. Hernandez was 6-3 with 3.72 ERA in 15 starts at Round Rock. This will be Hernandez's first appearance in the major leagues since 2006.

Astros are 1-7 in their last 8 games following a win.
Astros are 3-14 in their last 17 games as an underdog.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:40 PM ET]

Angels (-130, O/U 8): After a rough start against Tampa, Joe Saunders has put forth two strong efforts in a row, allowing just two runs in wins over Atlanta and Philadelphia. Saunders has been money on the road this season where he's 6-1 with a spectacular 1.89 ERA. In his one career start versus the Dodgers, Saunders got the win after giving up two runs over 7.1 innings of work. The UNDER is 7-3 in the last 10 games Saunders has started.

Angels are 10-2 in their last 12 road games.
The UNDER is 8-1 in LA's last 9 Friday games.

Key Injuries - 3B Maicer Izturis (.266; hamstring) is day-to-day.
OF Vladimir Guerrero (.290; flu) is day-to-day.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers: Chan Ho Park gets his second straight start after replacing Hiroki Kuroda in the Dodgers rotation. Park was sharp in his outing against the Indians but took a no-decision after allowing just one run in five innings. This will be Park's third start of the year in spot duty, although seeing that he's allowed just three runs in his other two appearances, he could be positioning himself for an extended stay in LA's rotation.

Dodgers are 2-9 in the last 11 meetings.
Dodgers are 2-6 in their last 8 interleague home games.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

                      MLB

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      Streaking Starting Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

                      Streaking

Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins (7-4, 4.31)

Nolasco has been stellar in his last three starts, posting a 2.70 ERA, which includes a dominant 12-strikeout victory against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The 25-year old right-hander is coming off a solid outing on Saturday, lasting seven innings, striking out three and surrendering just three runs in a 6-4 no-decision over the Oakland Athletics.

Nolasco has also lost just two of his last 10 starts and has allowed more than three runs just twice in that span. He is 2-2 at Dolphins Stadium with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.

Florida is 14-5 in its last 19 meetings against the Diamondbacks at Dolphin Stadium and is 6-1 in Nolascos last seven starts against a team with a winning record. Nolasco is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA this season against Arizona.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, Boston Red Sox (8-1, 3.46)

Matsuzaka has been Boston’s human victory cigar this season, especially on the road. Dice-K is 3-0 outside Fenway Park, posting a solid 2.60 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his five road starts and has struck out 25 in that span.

Dice-K allowed seven runs in last Saturday’s 9-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals but should find his form against the slumping Houston Astros. He should also get some major run support from his teammates. The Red Sox will face Houston starting pitcher Runelvys Hernandez, who hasn’t started a MLB contest since 2006.

Boston is 51-14 in its last 65 interleague games and 4-1 in Matsuzaka's last five interleague starts.

                      Slumping

Jose Contreras, Chicago White Sox (6-6, 3.96)

Contreras will be in tough against the NL-leading Chicago Cubs on Friday. The right-hander gave up nine runs on a mere 10 hits in last Saturday’s 11-7 loss to the Cubbies. He is also 0-3 in his last three starts with a lofty 10.13 ERA.

Contreras has won just one of his last five outings. He is also 1-3 all-time versus the Cubs and has lost his last two tilts at Wrigley Field.

To make matters worse, the Cubs are 6-0 in their last six meetings with the White Sox.

Kevin Correia, San Francisco Giants (1-5, 5.22)

Correia allowed eight runs in his first three tilts outside AT&T Park, resulting in a 0-3 mark and a 5.29 ERA. The right-hander is also 0-2 in his last three overall outings with a lofty 7.59 ERA and 1.79 WHIP.

Correia lasted five innings and relinquished five runs in a loss to Oakland earlier this month. He has also been dealing with an oblique injury all season that has hampered his pitching.

San Francisco is 0-4 in Correias last four starts outside the Bay. It is also 6-16 in its last 22 interleague road games.

Pujols, who missed 13 games with a calf injury, hit an RBI single in the ninth to give the Cardinals the lead. Gary Sheffield, who returned Tuesday from the disabled list, answered with a solo homer for Detroit in the bottom of the inning.

                        ROUGHED UP

For the first time this season, Reds starter Edinson Volquez got roughed up. The right-hander entered Cincinnati's game at Toronto with a major league-best 1.71 ERA but saw that rise to 2.08 after giving up five earned runs - seven total - in 4 1-3 innings. He had allowed three runs or fewer in each of his previous 16 appearances this season. The Blue Jays won 7-1.

                        WHIFF

Cliff Lee struck out a career-high 11 over eight innings and tied for the major league lead in victories with his 11th, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 4-1 win over the San Francisco Giants. ... Rich Harden struck out a career-high 11 in eight innings in Oakland's 5-0 win against the Philadelphia Phillies. He is the first A's pitcher to start a season 5-0 since Billy Koch in 2002, and he improved to 18-3 in 29 starts when pitching at least seven innings.

                        STREAKS

The Minnesota Twins won their ninth straight game - all against NL teams - beating the San Diego Padres 4-3. Twins have gained six games on the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox during this round of interleague play. They have outscored their opponents 56-19 during the winning streak, and their starters are 8-0 with a 2.17 ERA. It's their longest winning streak since taking 11 straight from June 22-July 3, 2006. ... Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts had two hits in Baltimore's 11-4 win over the Cubs to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

                        SWEET RELIEF

John Danks and four White Sox relievers combined on a five-hitter in a 2-0 victory over the Dodgers. The White Sox bullpen leads the league in ERA and strikeouts per nine innings.

                        OUCH!

Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton, who leads the majors with 76 RBIs, left Texas' 7-2 loss at Houston after he was hit on the left hand by a pitch from Wandy Rodriguez in the first inning. X-rays were negative and Hamilton was considered day to day.

                        YER OUTTA HERE

Umpire Brian Runge was suspended for one game for bumping into New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel before ejecting him earlier in the week. Manuel and center fielder Carlos Beltran also were fined by Major League Baseball for arguing with Runge in the fourth inning of the Mets' game against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.

                        SLUMPING

Florida starter Mark Hendrickson (7-6) allowed five runs, five hits and five walks in 4 2-3 innings in the Marlins' 6-1 loss to the Rays. Hendrickson, Florida's opening day starter, is 0-4 in six starts since beating San Francisco on May 25.

                        SPEAKING

"I'm displeased simply because we didn't play at 1 o'clock today - it was a beautiful day, and we could have played all day long. Now we'll get home at whatever time we get home and we've got a 2 o'clock game tomorrow. It's frustrating, we lose another off day and we play another game.'' - Pitcher Mike Mussina after New York's game at Pittsburgh was washed away by rain with the Yanks leading 3-1 in the third inning. New York plays a day-night doubleheader with the Mets on Friday.

                        SEASONS

                        June 27

1917 - Catcher Hank Gowdy of the Braves became the first major league player to enter military service in World War I.

1939 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Braves played a 23-inning, 2-2 tie. Whit Wyatt pitched the first 16 innings for the Dodgers. Both clubs played a 26-inning tie in 1920 at the same Braves Field.

1958 - Billy Pierce of the Chicago White Sox retired 26 straight Washington batters before pinch-hitter Ed Fitzgerald hit a double just inside the right-field line for the only hit. Pierce then struck out Albie Pearson on three pitches and beat the Senators 3-0.

1973 - David Clyde, a $125,000, 18-year-old bonus baby with the Rangers, pitched five innings, struck out eight and allowed one hit in his first major league start. Texas beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 before 35,698 fans - the Rangers' first home sellout at Arlington Stadium.

1980 - The Los Angeles Dodgers' Jerry Reuss pitched a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants in an 8-0 victory at Candlestick Park. The only player to reach base was Jack Clark in the first inning on a throwing error by shortstop Bill Russell.

1986 - San Francisco rookie Robby Thompson set a major league record when he was caught stealing four times in the Giants' 7-6, 12-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Catcher Bo Diaz threw out Thompson in the fourth, sixth, ninth and 11th innings.

1993 - Anthony Young of the New York Mets set a major league record by losing his 24th straight decision, 5-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals.

1999 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 27th homer and robbed Juan Gonzalez of a three-run shot with a spectacular over-the-fence catch as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 in the final game at the Kingdome.

2003 - Boston set a major league record by scoring 10 runs before the first out. The 50-minute, 91-pitch first inning came during a 25-8 victory over Florida. The Red Sox also tied an AL record with 14 first-inning runs. Johnny Damon matched a major league mark with three hits in an inning.

2007 - Ryan Howard hit his 100th career homer in his 325th game, becoming the fastest player to reach that total. Howard's three-run shot off Cincinnati's Aaron Harang gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. The 505-foot drive was the longest in the four-year history of Citizens Bank Park.

Today's birthdays: Johnny Estrada 32; Daryle Ward 33; Jim Edmonds 38.

Hot Lines: Friday's best MLB bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox (-110, 8 1/2)

The Cubbies are a brutal road team, but does this really count as a road game? Players will be sleeping in their own beds, relaxing with family and enjoying all the comforts of home - save for the ivy walls of Wrigley Field. Considering the Cubs swept the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field last season, home-field advantage probably doesn't count for much in this crosstown series.

You've also got to love Ryan Dempster right now as he's hotter than he has been at any point in his career and has pitched the Cubs to 12 wins and just four losses this season. Jose Contreras, on the other hand, is battling through a three-game losing streak.

                            Pick: Cubs

                            Philadelphia at Texas (-110, 10 1/2)

These are two of the best offenses in the major leagues, so the "over" seems like the logical pick, right? Not so fast. Both teams are in the midst of serious scoring draughts and Philadelphia, in particular, has been struggling mightily at the plate. The Phillies are hitting .210 as a team over their last 10 games, which has led to their current six-game "under" streak.

Texas, the No. 1 offense in the majors, has also been having trouble with the bats. Their batting average has dipped to .239 over their last 10 games and they have averaged only 4.5 runs per game over that span. It also doesn't help that RBI leader Josh Hamilton was hit on the hand yesterday and could be out of the lineup today.

                            Pick: Under
