Friday's List of 13: Runnin' the bases in the AL..........

Orioles-- Earl Weaver managed Orioles from 1968-82 and again in '85-'86; he made playoffs in five of his first six full seasons in Baltimore, got to World Series three years in row but only won one world title. Used great infield defense, three-run homers to make O's winners. Didn't get along with umps or Jim Palmer.

Red Sox-- Terry Francona won two world titles in four seasons ending an 86-year drought for Red Sox and proving a nice guy can win managing pros, and keeping press at bay in Beantown. Francona managed Michael Jordan in minor leagues, then got fired as manager of the Phils, but found his niche in Boston.

White Sox-- Ozzie Guillen pops off now and then, but he also led White Sox to their first world title since 1917, when Pants Rowland led Sox to world title. Ozzie's career record of 386-338 as skipper of Pale Hose means he can spout off now and then, and he's still going to have a job at the end of the day. .

Indians-- Mike Hargrove managed Tribe for eight years, going to playoffs last five years in row, getting to two World Series, coming within two innings of world title in '97. Indians had not been to playoffs since 1954 before that. Jacobs Field helped to revitalize Cleveland franchise, but Hargrove was the skipper.

Detroit-- Sparky Anderson led Detroit to 104-58 season and a world title in 1984, as dominant a team as there has been in the modern era; he made the playoffs again in '87, but Twins beat them in playoffs. Jim Leyland has chance to take this spot, but he still has lot of work to do-- Sparky was a tough act to top.

Kansas City-- Dick Howser led Royals to only world title in '85, but got sick the next year and had to retire. Whitey Herzog led Royals to playoffs three years in row in late 70's, but couldn't get past Bronx. This is tough call; sharing it would actually be fair, but if we had to choose just one, we'll take Herzog- tough job to make a franchise winners for the first time.

LA Angels-- Mike Scioscia is generally regarded as baseball's best manager right now; he's led Halos to the playoffs in four of last six seasons, appears headed back again in '08. Scioscia was a Dodger player whose Angels play like an NL team; they pitch well, field well and run fast-- that wins games.

Minnesota-- Tom Kelly is a quiet guy who managed Twins for 15+ seasons, leading them to world titles in '87 and '91. Reason Minnesota still wins today, despite budgetary restraints, is the blueprint Kelly put together as skipper of Twins. Minnesota had seven consecutive losing season before Kelly signed up.

Bronx-- Jor Torre has had very limited success outside of the Bronx, but he won four titles with the Bombers, was masterful in dealing with New York press, and gaining respect of veteran players. Torre's Bombers made playoffs every year he was the manager, and wasn't properly appreciated by team ownership.

Oakland-- Dick Williams only managed three years in Oakland, but what a three years they were; three division titles and pair of world titles. No one had managed for Charlie Finley for two years in row before Williams, so three years an impressive feat. We'll be in Cooperstown July 27 to see his induction ceremony

Seattle-- Lou Piniella made playoffs four times in his nine years managing the Mariners, winning 91-116-93 games his last three years in Pacific Northwest. His success in Seattle pretty much got Safeco Field built, which saved baseball in Seattle. For club that has had ARod-Griffey-Big Unit, surprising that they've yet to play in a World Series.

Tampa Bay-- Joe Maddon worked in Angel organization for 31 years before getting a chance to run his own team, and what a job he's doing this season. If Rays keep up, they'll be the top sports story in any sport since Northwestern made Rose Bowl out of nowhere in mid-90's, after having been a doormat in the Big 11 for years. Pitching and defense still win.

Texas-- The late Johnny Oates made playoffs three times with Rangers, when his best pitchers were Ken Hill-Darren Oliver-- Aaron Sele. With a franchise that has had as little success as the Rangers, that makes Oates the Rangers' version of freakin' Miller Huggins. Texas is one of few teams never play in the World Series.

Toronto-- Cito Gaston led Toronto to back-to-back world titles in 1992-3, but no franchise was hurt more by the '94 strike than the Jays. Toronto has been pretty good most of the time last few years, but in division with Bronx/Boston, they've not been contenders. Rays' success this season cost John Gibbons his job, and now Gaston has been brought back as the savior.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

            MLB

            Wednesday, June 25

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking Starting Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday’s MLB streaking and slumping starters

            Streaking

Armando Galarraga, Detroit Tigers (7-2, 3.03)

Rookie Armando Galarraga threw just 8 2/3 innings for the Texas Rangers last season before he was designated for assignment and eventually traded to the Detroit Tigers for a minor leaguer.

This year he looks like a completely different pitcher for the Tigers, who have needed all the help they can get on the bump. Galarraga has allowed just two earned runs over his last three outings and is currently riding a four-game winning streak.

So what's the big difference from last year to this year? Specifically, his breaking ball. The 26-year-old has better control of his slider and has more movement on all of his pitches this season.

Ted Lilly, Chicago Cubs (7-5, 4.71)

Ted Lilly's numbers are still stinging from a tough start to the season. He was chased before the sixth inning while allowing more than four runs in three of his first four starts, but hasn't allowed more than four runs in a start since then.

As always, Lilly's success depends on his location. At the beginning of the year he was falling behind hitters early in the count, then trying to sneak pitches by. Now he's getting ahead in the count and sitting batters down when he has the opportunity.

Lilly recently held the Blue Jays to just a single hit over six innings and then allowed just three earned runs to the hated White Sox to help the Cubs to their seventh in over the last nine times he has taken the ball. The veteran lefty has 91 strikeouts compared to 31 walks on the year.

            Slumping

Randy Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks (4-5, 5.09)

Over a three-start stint running in mid-to-late May, the 44-year-old Randy Johnson turned back the clock by allowing just three earned runs while striking out 24 batters. Now, only about a month later, it looks as though time is finally catching up with him.

The Big Unit has allowed seven runs in each of his last two outings, managing just four strikeouts while giving up 21 hits combined and Arizona has lost each of his last six starts.

Johnson's velocity obviously isn't what it used to be, but he's still tough when his slider's biting. Right now he isn?t getting the movement he needs without a 98 mph heater to lean on and can't be counted on for more than five or six innings per start.

              SCOREBOARD

              Wednesday, June 25

Colorado at Kansas City (8:10 p.m. EDT). Surprising right-hander Aaron Cook (10-4, 3.57 ERA) leads the Rockies against former No. 1 overall draft pick Luke Hochevar (4-5, 4.86) and the Royals. Cook is coming off his first loss in six starts.

              STARS

              Tuesday

              - Jason Varitek, Red Sox, hit a go-ahead single to cap a four-run eighth inning for Boston in a 5-4 victory over Arizona.

              - Brian Roberts, Orioles, had three hits to reach 1,000 for his career and lead Baltimore to a 7-5 win over the Chicago Cubs.

              - Zack Greinke, Royals, matched a career high with 10 strikeouts in Kansas City's 7-3 win over Colorado.

              - Emil Brown, Athletics, hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning of a 5-2 win over Philadelphia.

              TERRIBLE TENS

After allowing 10 runs in an inning-plus in Cincinnati's 14-1 loss to Toronto, Bronson Arroyo became the sixth starting pitcher in major league history to give up at least 10 earned runs while getting no more than three outs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Jason Jennings did it last July 29 with Houston against San Diego.

              FEISTY FRESNO

Fresno State has reached the brink of pulling off what once was unimaginable for a team in its situation: winning a national championship. One of the most amazing postseason runs in college baseball history continued Tuesday night thanks to an offensive performance that was nothing short of, well, amazing. After spotting Georgia a five-run lead in the third inning, Fresno State struck for 15 runs over the next three innings for a 19-10 victory in Game 2 of the College World Series finals.

              BATTY PROBLEM

Baseball will start testing bats following a meeting Tuesday of a player-management safety committee but made no decision on the contentious issue of banning maple models. Along with conducting field and laboratory tests, the panel will consult manufacturers and experts, and also survey what protective devices are in place for fans and players at the 30 big league ballparks. ... Plate umpire Brian O'Nora was hit in the head by a shattered piece of Miguel Olivo's broken bat, forcing him out of Tuesday night's game between the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals. O'Nora was injured in the bottom of the second inning when Olivo's bat broke on a groundout to shortstop. The Royals later announced that O'Nora had a small cut on his forehead and was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

              BACK HOME

Omar Vizquel's heart-tugging return began with a touching video tribute of some of his greatest plays. He ended it with two more, dropping down a suicide-squeeze bunt to drive in a run in the ninth inning and preserving San Francisco's lead with a backhanded play in the hole during a 3-2 win over the Indians on Tuesday night in the shortstop's first game in Cleveland in four years. ... In Toronto, Scott Rolen hit one of his team's three home runs, A.J. Burnett pitched eight strong innings and the Blue Jays routed Cincinnati 14-1 in Cito Gaston's first game in Toronto since being rehired as manager.

              E STREET

The Washington Nationals made four errors in their 8-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night. Two of them came in the Angels' six-run first inning.

              AND THAT'S 30

The Pirates had been the only team in the majors to not beat the Yankees in a regular-season game, losing six in a row in New York in 2005 and 2007 before a 12-5 win at home Tuesday night.

              IT'S A SNAP

The Chicago White Sox snapped a nine-game road losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

              THEIR KIND OF TOWN

In their first appearance at Wrigley Field, the Baltimore Orioles ended Chicago's 14-game home winning streak with a 7-5 victory.

              STREAKING, SLIPPING

Brendan Harris and Brian Buscher hit solo home runs on consecutive pitches against Trevor Hoffman in the ninth inning, and Minnesota beat San Diego 3-1 for its seventh straight victory. Hoffman, baseball's career saves leader, has given up five homers in 26 innings this year. Last season, he allowed two in 57 1-3 innings.

              SPEAKING

"I probably could have told them what was coming and fared better.'' - Reds starter Bronson Arroyo after allowing 10 runs in an inning-plus during Toronto's 14-1 win Tuesday night.

              SEASONS

              June 25

1934 - Pitcher John Broaca tied a major league record by striking out five consecutive times but pitched the Yankees to an 11-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Lou Gehrig had better luck at the plate, hitting for the cycle.

1937 - Augie Galan of Chicago became the first National League switch-hitter to hit home runs from both sides of the plate as the Cubs beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 11-2.

1950 - Chicago's Hank Sauer hit two home runs and two doubles to pace the Cubs to an 11-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1961 - Baltimore and California used a major league-record 16 pitchers, eight by each side, as the Orioles edged the Angels 9-8 on Ron Hansen's 14th-inning homer.

1968 - Bobby Bonds, in his first major league game, hit a grand slam off John Purdin to help San Francisco to a 9-0 win over Los Angeles.

1998 - Sammy Sosa broke the major league record for homers in a month, hitting his 19th of June leading off the seventh inning of the Cubs' 6-4 loss to Detroit. Sosa passed the mark set by Detroit's Rudy York in August 1937.

1999 - Jose Jimenez, a rookie right-hander having one of the worst seasons of any NL pitcher, threw St. Louis' first no-hitter in 16 seasons, outdueling Randy Johnson in a 1-0 victory over Arizona.

2002 - History was made when Luis Pujols' Detroit Tigers took the field against Tony Pena's Kansas City Royals. Pujols and Pena became the first Dominican-born managers to oppose each other in a major league game.

2004 - Larry Walker hit three home runs - the third in the 10th inning - in Colorado's 10-8 victory over Cleveland.

2007 - A fan charged at Bob Howry during the Cubs' 10-9 win over Colorado, after the reliever helped blow an 8-3 lead in the ninth inning. Howry gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe and a three-run homer to Troy Tulowitzki. The fan then jumped onto the field from the roof of the Rockies' dugout and made it a few feet from the mound before security guards tackled him. Howry earned the victory when Alfonso Soriano hit a game-ending two-run single in the bottom of the inning.

Today's birthdays: Paul Maholm 26; Aramis Ramirez 30; Luke Scott 30; Carlos Delgado 36.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets

                    N.Y. Yankees at Pittsburgh (+165, 9)

Remember the old Zach Duke – the guy that burst on the scene in 2005 and went 8-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 14 starts for pitiful Pirates? Well, we won’t jump to conclusions, but Duke is starting to look a lot more like that kind of pitcher than the one who has struggled and missed 2 ½ months due to elbow surgery last year.

His numbers won’t blow you away - 4-4 with a 3.91 ERA- but if you take away a few nasty starts against the league-leading Chicago Cubs, they look a lot better. Duke has allowed 13 earned runs on 26 combined hits over his last three matchups with the North Siders. Outside of those starts he has allowed more than four runs just once – six against the Phillies back in April.

“It’s like last year happened a long time ago,” Duke told the Beaver County Times & Allegheny Times. “I feel so much better this year, both physically and mentally. I’m at a point where I’m really consistent with my mechanics and my pitches. Every time I take the mound I feel like I’m going to pitch a good game. It’s a good feeling to have.”

Duke squares off against the red-hot Joba Chamberlin, who’s still looking for his first win, but is coming off three solid starts for the Yanks. Chamberlin cracked the 100-pitch plateau for the first time in his last outing.

                    Pick: Under

                    Tampa Bay at Florida (+120, 8 ½)

Tampa Bay starter James Shields started strong this year, but hasn’t won a game since May 8 and is 1-4 with a 6.99 ERA on the road. The Rays expected better after he got off to a great start this season.

Florida, meanwhile, sends out the 21-year-old Ryan Tucker. He’s still obviously a work in progress, but he managed to work a career-high six innings in a 8-3 win on the road at Seattle.

"[Tucker] has done a great job for us since he's been brought up," Dan Uggla told reporters. "Everybody knows he's just got some kind of nasty stuff. He's [throwing] 94-97 [mph] with a nasty whatever off-speed pitch he throws. I don't even know what he throws, a slider, split or whatever. He gets ahead, works quick, throws strikes. He's going to be around for a long time."

                    Pick: Florida

Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox [ESPN2 | 7:05 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: The Big Unit has been the Big Disappointment of late. Johnson has lost his last four decisions and Arizona has come out on the short end of the stick in his last six starts overall. Johnson has been basically batting practice in his previous 18 innings of work, allowing 27 hits and 20 runs over that span. Johnson has, however, experienced a lot of success against the Red Sox from his time in the American League. The Big Unit is 16-7 with a 4.47 ERA in 29 career starts versus Boston. Despite his struggles, the UNDER is 4-0 in Johnson's last four starts on the road.

Diamondbacks are 7-18 in their last 25 road games.
The UNDER is 13-3 in Johnson's last 16 road starts.

Key Injuries - OF Eric Byrnes (.219; hamstrings) has been activated from the 15-day DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-170, O/U 9): Amazingly, 41-year old Tim Wakefield is the youngster in this matchup with 45-year old Randy Johnson. Wakefield only has two victories in his last 10 appearances, although he's pitched well in his five most recent outings. In his last 36 innings pitched, Wakefield has allowed 11 runs but he has only one win over that span. Despite his lengthy career, this will be the knuckleballer's first-ever start against the Diamondbacks.

Red Sox are 50-14 in their last 64 interleague games.
Red Sox are 39-12 in their last 51 home games.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; hand) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Mike Timlin (3-3; knee) is on the 15-day DL).

New York Yankees at Pittsburgh Pirates [YES | 7:05 PM ET]

Yankees (-180, O/U 9): Even though he has yet to record a win, it's looking like the Yankees decision to make Joba Chamberlain a starter may have been the correct one. New York has won three of Joba's four starts, in large part due to him allowing just seven runs in 18.1 innings of work. The Yanks have won each of Chamberlain's last two outings by a score of 2-1. In his lone road start this year against the Astros, Joba allowed only one run over six innings.

Yankees are 8-3 in their last 11 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in New York's last 8 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries - OF Johnny Damon (.323; foot) is doubtful.
OF Hideki Matsui (.323; knee) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Pirates: The Pirates have had success with Zach Duke on the mound, going 6-4 over his last four starts, with three of those losses coming by a single run. Duke has been solid at home this year, going 4-2 with an ERA of 3.18 in eight starts. Duke received a no-decision his last time out against Toronto, although he pitched brilliantly, not allowing a run in seven innings of work. The UNDER is 3-1 in Duke's last four starts.

Pirates are 7-2 in their last 9 home games.
The OVER is 7-2 in Pittsburgh's last 9 games vs. AL East.

Key Injuries - OF Xavier Nady (.314; shoulder) is questionable.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Texas Rangers at Houston Astros [8:05 PM ET]

Rangers: Scott Feldman has been terrible for Texas this season. He has just one win his last 10 outings and the Rangers are just 2-8 overall during that time. In his last six appearances, Feldman has allowed four runs or more four times. Forget about betting Feldman on the road where he's 0-3 with a miserable 7.33 ERA in four starts. Feldman actually had one of his best performances of the season his last time out versus Atlanta, giving up just two runs over seven innings in a 5-4 Rangers win.

The UNDER is 8-2 in Feldman's last 10 starts.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings at Houston.

Key Injuries - OF Josh Hamilton (.312; knee) is questionable.
OF Milton Bradley (.330; quad) is doubtful.
C Gerald Laird (.306; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Astros (-140, O/U 9.5): The question going around Houston is what in the heck is wrong with Roy Oswalt? The Astros ace is a disappointing 6-7 with an ERA of 4.84 in 2008. There is some good news for Astros backers, however. Oswalt has pitched some of his best baseball this season in two of his last three outings. Take out a terrible performance against the Yankees and Oswalt has allowed just three runs in wins over Milwaukee and Tampa. The UNDER has cashed four of the last five times Oswalt has taken the hill.

Astros are 3-7 in their last 10 interleague games.
The OVER is 8-3 in Houston's last 11 interleague home games.

Key Injuries - 2B Kaz Matsui (.271; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Gavin Floyd will look to beat the Dodgers for the first time in his young career after going 0-2 in two previous starts against them with a 13.50 ERA. Both of those outings came when he was with the Phillies, and Chicago has won five straight with him on the mound. Floyd has allowed two earned runs or less in three of his last four starts overall, but none of those have come away from home. He is 3-2 in six road starts this season with a 4.01 ERA.

White Sox are 1-9 in their last 10 road games.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Chicago's last 11 road games.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.215; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-110, O/U 8): Southpaw Eric Stults will try to build on a solid season debut for LA after allowing just one earned run and six hits in six innings of a 7-4 win at Cincinnati last Thursday. He walked one and struck out a career-high five batters. Stults got called up from Triple-A Las Vegas after Brad Penny and Hiroki Kuroda were both placed on the DL, and he went 1-4 last season for the Dodgers with a 5.82 ERA.

Dodgers are 14-38 in their last 52 interleague games.
The UNDER is 11-5 in LA's last 16 home games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE
