    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Felix Hernandez' grand slam last night was first-ever homer by a Mariner pitcher, and first grand slam by an AL pitcher since '71-- an Indians' pitcher named Steve Dunning hit one.

-- Mets and Mariners are only two teams this year that have yet win a game they trailed in by 3+ runs.

-- The Tampa-Boston fight was June 5, 19 freakin' days ago, but Coco Crisp and Akinori Iwamura have yet to serve their suspensions. What takes so long?

-- Carolina drafted Michal Jordan; in hockey. Hurricanes of the NHL drafted Jordan, a center from Plymouth, with 105th pick in the draft. No word on whether he'll wear number 23.

--Main Event at World Series of Poker starts next Thursday; 38 of 55 events at the WSOP have been completed. In 2007, 6,358 entrants put up $10,000 each for shot at the pot o' gold.

-- ESPN is glad that Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow have both won a bracelet this year, which will make their replays more fun. Both those events should get lot of airtime.

Tuesday's List of 13: Runnin' bases in the National League

This week, we're looking at best manager for each team since 1960 or so; tomorrow, the American League. Next week, we'll analyze the 2008 amateur drafts of each organization.

Diamondbacks— Bob Brenly won the World Series in his first year as Arizona skipper, but he was beneficiary of the work of Buck Showalter, who went 250-236 in three years as skipper of the Snakes. Joe Torre also benefitted from following Showalter as manager of the Bronx Bombers.

Braves— Bobby Cox won 14 consecutive division titles; if a guy could get enshrined in Cooperstown while he was still an active manager, this would be the man. Think about what the Braves were before he took their reins (seven consecutive yrs under .500 before Cox became the manager).

Cubs— Cubs went 59-103 in Leo Durocher's first year as Cubs' skipper, 1966, but they had winning seasons in each of next six seasons, before Durocher left, then they got worse again. Lou Piniella could take this spot if he wins World Series in Wrigley.

Reds— George (Sparky) Anderson hit .218 in 477 AB for Phils in his only big league season, 1959; his managerial career was slightly better- he won seven division titles and three World Championships, with an overall record of 2,194-1,834. Guessing he'll also be in tomorrow's article, about the Tigers.

Rockies— Franchise has had just four winning seasons; three different managers led them in those four seasons, but Rockies fantastic finish last season makes Clint Hurdle a Colorado icon, getting Rockies to World Series for the first time ever. He's had only one winning season in six as skipper, but what a season.

Marlins— Two word titles in just 15 seasons; Jim Leyland got the first one, but went 54-108 the next season and left because they dumped all the good players. Jack McKeon won the title in 2003, taking over during the season, then went 83-79 couple years in row, so he is our choice as Marlins' best manager.

Astros— Larry Dierker went from TV booth to dugout and got four division titles in his five years as manager, before he went back to broadcast booth. Four different skippers led Astros to postseason berths, with Bill Virdon winning consecutive titles in NL West in 1980-81. Dierker is our choice for the Astros.

Dodgers— From 1954-95, Dodgers had two managers; Tommy Lasorda is one of baseball best salesmen; he led the Dodgers to six division titles and two world titles. Walter Alston led the Dodgers to four world titles, including Brooklyn's only title in 1955. Alston was one of the best managers of all-time.

Brewers— Tom Trebelhorn never made playoffs in five years managing Milwaukee, but he also had only one losing season; if you look through Brewer history, thats no small feat. Since Trebelhorn left after '91 season, Brewers have had two winning seasons, in '92 (Phil Garner) and last year (Ned Yost).

Metropolitans— Davey Johnson has done nothing but win as a major league manager, but never gets mentioned anymore; he is the Olympic baseball manager this summer. Johnson's record as a big league manager: 1,148-888, with more wins than losses in all four stops in his managerial career. Thats not easy to do.

Phillies— Charlie Manuel hasn't had losing season in his four years in Phily; Dallas Green made playoffs in both his seasons in Philly, winning Phils' only world title in 1980, but he only did two seasons with Phils. Danny Ozark won three division titles in row in late 70's. Tough call; we'll go with Dallas Green.

Pirates— Danny Murtaugh won world titles in Pittsburgh in both '60, '71; Chuck Tanner won one in '79. Jim Leyland made it to playoffs three years in row with Bonds/Bonilla, and Pirates haven't had winning season since he left. Seeing as Mazeroski homer in 1960 is most dramatic HR ever, Murtaugh is our guy.

Cardinals— Whitey Herzog's Cardinals were one of most fun teams to watch, winning three league titles and '82 world title; Red Schoendienst got to World Series in both '67-'68, winning in '67, but Tony Larussa has made playoffs in six of last nine seasons, winning '06 Series. The 2008 Cardinals might be his best managing job, contending with a makeshift pitching staff.

Padres— I'm huge Dick Williams fan, being an A's fan, but the best Padre manager is Bruce Bochy, who made playoffs in four of his twelve seasons as the San Diego skipper. Not sure why San Diego let him go, much less to a division rival. For record, Padres had one winning season out of 12 before Williams' era.

Giants— One of baseball's weirdest droughts is Giants streak of no world titles since 1954; their move to San Francisco has to rank as one of the sport's greatest blunders (they could be the only NL team in NY City now, had they stayed). Anyway, Dusty Baker made playoffs three times as the Giants' manager, signed autograph for me in 1975 at Shea, so he is our choice.

Nationals— Buck Rodgers, Felipe Alou, Dick Williams; Expos' only playoff appearance was in strike-shortened 1981 season- they would have made it in '94, had strike not wiped out end of season. Williams once won 95 games in Montreal when his #1 guy was Dan Schatzeder (10-5, 2.83), so we'll give him the nod.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

            MLB

            Tuesday, June 24

If there any updates, we will re-post.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox [7:05 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: Doug Davis has been spectacular in his last two outings, going 2-0 after giving up just one run in 13 innings of work. Davis has been pretty consistent all season, allowing three runs or less in six of eight starts. Davis has had more success at home than on the road where he's just 1-2 with a 3.98 ERA. In five starts against Boston, Davis is 3-2 with a solid 3.78 ERA. The UNDER is 3-1 in Davis' last four starts.

Diamondbacks are 2-6 in their last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Eric Byrnes (.219; hamstrings) has been activated from the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-175, O/U 9.5): Justin Masterson continues to cruise along this year. The ground ball pitcher is 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA on the season. Opposing teams are hitting just .176 against Masterson and he's only allowed more than three runs in one outing this season. Masterson has been terrific at Fenway Park where he's a perfect 3-0 with an ERA of 2.59. Walks have been a problem for Masterson. He's given out 17 free passes in 36 innings pitched.

Red Sox are 49-13 in their last 62 interleague games.
Red Sox are 40-12 in their last 52 home games.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; hand) is on the 15-day DL.
RP Mike Timlin (3-3; knee) is on the 15-day DL).

            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

St. Louis Cardinals at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

Cardinals: After a couple of dicey outings, Braden Looper has been on top of his game in his last two starts. Looper has allowed just one run over his last 16 innings of work, getting a win and no-decision. Looper has been strong on the road this season, going 4-2 with an ERA of 3.60. However, he's been blasted in seven career appearances against the Tigers (7.45 ERA). The OVER is 4-2 in Looper's six road starts this season.

Cardinals are 6-2 in their last 8 road games.
The UNDER is 9-4-2 in St. Louis' last 15 road games.

Key Injuries - 1B Albert Pujols (.347; calf) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Tigers (-150, O/U 9.5): Kenny Rogers has been remarkable over the last month of the season. In his previous 36 innings of work, Rogers has given up just seven runs. However, thanks to a lack of run support, Rogers has just one win and four no-decisions over that span. Rogers has two career starts against the Cardinals but he hasn't factored in either decision. However, his ERA is an alarming 9.72, with batters hitting an unfathomable .424 against him. The UNDER is 4-1 in Rogers' last five starts.

Tigers are 10-2 in their last 12 games overall.
The OVER is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings at Detroit.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Texas Rangers at Houston Astros [8:05 PM ET]

Rangers: Eric Hurley hasn't factored in a decision in his first two career starts, although the Rangers are 0-2 with him on the mound. Hurley hasn't been awful but he hasn't been great either, allowing six runs over 11 innings of work. Hurley has one road start this year, allowing six hits and four runs in six innings at Kansas City. That game easily went OVER the total.

Rangers are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
The OVER is 10-4 in Texas' last 14 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - C Gerald Laird (.306; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Astros (-130, O/U 10): Brad Moehler has been solid over his last 10 starts, although he only has three wins to show for it. Over that span, Moehler has allowed three runs or less nine times, always keeping his team in the game. Moehler has squared off against the Rangers nine times in his career, going 5-4 with an ERA of 4.96. The last time he was at home, Moehler had one of his worst outings of the year, giving up seven runs to the Brewers in just 4.2 innings of work. The UNDER is 4-1 in Moehler's last five starts.

Astros are 2-7 in their last 9 interleague games.
The OVER is 8-2 in Houston's last 10 interleague home games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 7

Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Mark Buehrle has found his grove, putting up four good outings in a row. After a tough start to the season, Buehrle has allowed just seven runs in his last 30 innings on the mound. The road hasn't been kind to Buehrle is 2008 where he's just 2-4 with an ERA of 4.91. He has been lights out against the Dodgers, however. In two career starts versus LA, Buehrle has an ERA of 1.20 and 0.80 WHIP.

White Sox are 0-9 in their last 9 road games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Chicago's last 10 road games.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.215; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-135, O/U 8): Derek Lowe doesn't have a great record on the year (5-6), but he's pitched pretty well for the most part, especially in his most recent six starts. Over that span, Lowe has allowed just 10 runs in 41.1 innings of work. Lowe has been tough at Dodger Stadium where he's 4-2 with a 3.11 ERA on the year. In his last six starts, the OVER has cashed four times with Lowe on the mound.

Dodgers are 14-37 in their last 51 interleague games.
The UNDER is 12-3 in LA's last 15 games as a favorite.

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

              Streaking Starting Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's streaking and slumping MLB starters

              Streaking

Kenny Rogers, Detroit Tigers (5-4, 4.47 ERA)

When Kenny Rogers went under the knife last year for major surgery on his pitching shoulder to fix a circulation problem, many figured the veteran lefty was nearing the end of his MLB career. But it doesn’t look like Rogers is ready to pack it in quite yet.

He has lasted at least seven innings in each of his last five starts, allowing just five earned runs over that span - though thanks to the inconsistent Tigers, he was credited with only a single win to go along with four no-decisions.

This doesn’t seem to be just a hot streak for Rogers either. He has allowed more than four runs only three times in 14 starts this season despite walking as many batters as he’s struck out (36 apiece).

              Slumping

              A.J. Burnett, Toronto Blue Jays (6-7, 5.43)

For a guy who is supposed to be the Blue Jays’ No. 2 arm, Burnett is a major disappointment this season.

Toronto has lost four of the big righty’s last five starts wiith his last three outings being the most worrisome. Burnett hasn’t made it past the fifth inning in any of those starts, giving up a combined 18 runs. He walked four batters in each of those outings and gave up two dingers in his most recent performance, an 8-7 loss to the Brewers.

Oddly, Burnett prefers to pitch on the road so he won’t be overly excited to face the Reds at Rogers Center on Tuesday. The righty has an 8.16 ERA in seven home games.

                SCOREBOARD

                Tuesday, June 24

St. Louis at Detroit (7:05 p.m. EDT). The Cardinals' Braden Looper (8-5, 4.10 ERA) matches up with veteran Kenny Rogers (5-4, 4.36) of the Tigers. In his last road start, Looper picked up his first career complete game and shutout, a three-hitter at Cincinnati on June 11. Looper has walked just three batters in 40 innings away from home this season.

                STARS

                Monday

-Felix Hernandez, Mariners, hit a grand slam and gave up one run in 4 2-3 innings before leaving with a sprained ankle in a 5-2 win over the Mets.

-Ben Sheets, Brewers, gave up one run on four hits in a 4-1 complete-game victory over the Braves. Sheets struck out seven without issuing a walk in improving to 9-1 on the season.

-Dan Haren, Diamondbacks, outpitched Josh Beckett by giving up just two hits and a walk in seven innings of a 2-1 win over the Red Sox.

-John Lackey, Angels, gave up six hits and one earned run over eight innings, striking out six in a 3-2 win over the Nationals.

-Jose Guillen, Royals, homered, doubled and drove in two runs to help Kansas City improve to 10-3 against the National League with an 8-4 win over the Rockies.

                HERNANDEZ HURTS METS, THEN HIMSELF

Felix Hernandez hit the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years, then departed with a sprained ankle before he could qualify for a win in the Mariners' 5-2 victory over the Mets. The shot to right-center off Johan Santana was the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an AL hurler since Cleveland's Steve Dunning went deep against Oakland's Diego Segui on May 11, 1971, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                SHEETS A ROAD WARRIOR

Brewers ace Ben Sheets gave up only four hits in a 4-1 win over the Braves, retiring the final 15 batters for his NL-leading third complete game. Sheets (9-1) won his fifth straight decision and is 6-0 in 10 road starts.

                RULING THE NL

The Royals sure seem to have solved their counterparts in the National League. Brian Bannister picked up his third straight victory, Mark Teahen hit a three-run homer and Kansas City beat the Rockies 8-4 for its eighth win in nine games - all against teams from the NL. The Royals' 10-3 record is the best in interleague play.

                BACK ON TRACK

Dan Haren outpitched Josh Beckett with seven dominant innings, helping the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 win over the Red Sox that may have gotten the NL West leaders back on track. Arizona was swept by Minnesota over the weekend and has won just seven of its past 21 road games.

                COMEDY OF ERRORS

The Nationals had more to do with their 3-2 loss than the Angels. Third baseman Pete Orr, a defensive substitute, collided with reliever Saul Rivera in the eighth inning on a bunt by Chone Figgins, allowing him to reach base. When Figgins stole second, catcher Jesus Flores' errant throw sent him to third. Felipe Lopez's error on a grounder by Erick Aybar allowed Figgins to tie it, and Garret Anderson drove in Aybar with the go-ahead run.

                SPEAKING

"He's got the best curveball in baseball. If you're gonna beat Sheets, your pitcher's got to pitch a heck of a game.'' -Braves manager Bobby Cox, after watching Brewers ace Ben Sheets give up four hits in a complete-game 4-1 victory.

                SEASONS

                June 24

1936 - Rookie Joe DiMaggio hit two homers in the fifth inning and added two doubles in the New York Yankees' 18-4 victory over the St. Louis Browns.

1950 - Wes Westrum of the New York Giants hit three home runs and a triple in a 12-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

1955 - Harmon Killebrew hit his first major league homer, off Billy Hoeft at Griffith Stadium, but the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Senators 18-7.

1962 - Jack Reed, a substitute outfielder, hit a homer off Phil Regan in the 22nd inning to give the New York Yankees a 9-7 win over the Detroit Tigers in a game that lasted 7 hours, 22 minutes. It was the only homer Reed hit in the majors.

1968 - Jim Northrup tied a major league record by hitting two grand slams in one game as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 14-3.

1983 - Don Sutton of the Milwaukee Brewers became the eighth pitcher in major league history to strike out 3,000 batters. Sutton's 3,000th victim was Cleveland's Alan Bannister in a 3-2 win over the Indians.

1984 - Oakland's Joe Morgan hit his 265th home run as a second baseman, breaking Roger Hornsby's career home run record for the position. Morgan's homer off Frank Tanana was the 267th of his career and led the A's to a 4-2 win over Texas.

1994 - Jeff Bagwell hit three homers, two in one inning to tie a major league record, as the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 16-4.

1997 - Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners struck out 19 batters - one short of Roger Clemens' major league record for a nine-inning game. He became the first AL left-hander to fan 19, but the Oakland Athletics won 4-1.

1998 - Sammy Sosa tied the major league record for homers in a month, hitting his 18th of June in the first inning of the Cubs' 7-6 loss to Detroit. Sosa, with 31 homers overall, matched the mark set by Detroit's Rudy York in August 1937, and broke Willie Mays' NL record set in August 1965.

2002 - Both starters in the first game of the Anaheim-Texas doubleheader - Joaquin Benoit and Aaron Sele - threw 96 pitches, 53 strikes and 43 balls. Benoit and the Rangers won 8-5.

2003 - Brad Wilkerson hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, in Montreal's 6-4 win over Pittsburgh. It was the first cycle in the majors this season and was performed in sequence - single, double, triple and homer.

2007 - Dustin McGowan pitched a one-hitter to lead Toronto to a 5-0 victory over Colorado. Jeff Baker singled leading off the ninth inning to spoil McGowan's no-hit bid. He retired the next three batters to finish off his first career shutout. He struck out seven and walked one over 109 pitches.

                Today's birthday: Phil Hughes 22.

                  Gameday
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Tuesday MLB Gameday

Jake Peavy and the San Diego Padres will be looking to snag an interleague victory at home when they play the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Here's your MLB Gameday:

Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox, 7:05pm ET
Doug Davis (2-3, 3.65 ERA) vs. Justin Masterson (4-1, 3.00 ERA)

Davis will be looking to pick up his first victory since May 23 when he takes to the mound at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. The lefthander has gone 0-2 with three no-decisions over his past five outings, although he's pitched well in each of his last two starts (one earned run on nine hits in 13 innings). Davis' ERA is down to 3.65 this year.

Masterson is 4-1 with a no-decision in his six starts for the Red Sox this season, and he's allowed three or fewer earned runs in five of those six outings. The righthander is coming off a win over the Phillies on June 18 in which he gave up two earned runs on four hits over five innings of work. Masterson has walked 17 and fanned 28 this season.

Tampa Bay Rays at Florida Marlins, 7:10pm ET
Andy Sonnanstine (8-3, 4.92 ERA) vs. Scott Olsen (4-4, 3.51 ERA)

Sonnanstine has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past five outings, and he's coming off a solid win over the Cubs (three earned runs on seven hits over five innings of work). The righthander has already faced the Marlins once this season, holding them to three earned runs on six hits over 5 1-3 innings in a victory on June 13.

Olsen hasn't been able to earn a victory since May 6, when he blanked the Brewers over 8 2-3 innings of work. Since that outing the lefthander is 0-3 with five no-decisions, although he did manage to hold the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in four of those games. Olsen lost to the M's last time out, allowing five runs over 4 1-3 innings.

Minnesota Twins at San Diego Padres, 10:05pm ET
Kevin Slowey (4-6, 4.37 ERA) vs. Jake Peavy (5-4, 2.88 ERA)

Slowey was pounded by the White Sox on June 8 (eight earned runs on 10 hits over three innings), but he bounced back with strong outings in his next two starts. The righthander held the Brewers to two earned runs over eight innings in a win on June 13, and he gave just one earned run over six innings in a win against the Nats on June 18.

Peavy's ERA is only 2.88 on the season, but he's managed to post just a 5-4 record. The ace righthander has lost three of his past four starts, beating the Dodgers but falling to the Rockies, Cubs, and Yankees. Last time out, at Yankee Stadium, Peavy surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits over just four innings, striking out four.

Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Dodgers, 10:10pm ET
Mark Buehrle (4-6, 4.28 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (5-6, 3.90 ERA)

Buehrle has gone eight innings in each of his past three starts, giving up just four earned runs on 18 hits over that span (with four walks and 13 strikeouts). The lefthander is 3-1 with three no-decisions over his past seven starts, allowing more than three earned runs in just one of those games. Buehrle beat the Pirates in his most recent start.

Lowe snapped a lengthy losing streak with a win over the Rockies on June 2, and he's gone 3-1 over his last four outings. The righthander has dropped his ERA under 4.00 on the season by allowing three or fewer earned runs in each of his last six outings. Last time out, versus the Reds, Lowe allowed one earned run on three hits over 5 1-3 innings.

Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Dodgers (-119, 8)

Before the White Sox went into this round of their interleague schedule they were looking like a playoff shoo-in. Now, after badly losing two of their three series against the National League, a lot of South Siders are starting to wonder. But it would be wrong to make too much of the sweep at Wrigley and the struggles against Colorado - this is still one of the best clubs in the majors and, as an underdog against a depleted Dodgers lineup, there's big-time value.

The Dodgers haven't been the same offensively since leadoff man Rafael Furcal went on the DL with a stiff back. Andruw Jones is also on the DL and the bullpen has been sapped of some strength because Chan Ho Park and Eric Stults have had to move into the starting rotation to fill in for the growing list of banged-up starters. With a long list of key players on the DL, it's not all that surprising the Dodgers are 10-18 over the last four weeks.

                      Pick: White Sox

                      Philadelphia at Oakland (-109, 9)

If you looked at their ERAs, you wouldn't think there's much difference between Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton. But then you look at the win/loss records of their respective clubs when they are on the mound, and you start to get the picture.

Moyer has been the Phillies' good luck charm this season because even when he's not been sharp (which hasn’t been all that often) the Phillies have managed to pull out wins (10-5). Blanton, on the other hand, has gotten the A's wins in only four of his 16 starts. It also helps that Moyer is very familiar with the A's and McAfee Coliseum from his days with the Seattle Mariners, while Blanton has only seen the Phillies once in his career.

                      Pick: Phillies
