    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Jim Edmonds became third Cub to hit two homers in same inning, joining Mark Bellhorn ('02) and Sammy Sosa ('96).

-- CC Sabathia homered, allowed just one run in his seven IP on the hill as Cleveland won 7-2 in 11 at Chavez Ravine.

-- Matsuzaka allowed seven runs on just 48 pitches in return from DL, as Cardinals blasted Boston 9-3. It was his shortest stint in a major league game.

-- Phillies lost fourth game in row as slumping Utley sat out (he is 0 for last 23). Phils are 1-10 in last 11 starts by Myers.

-- Tough weekend for Huston Street, who allowed six runs in two IP against Florida, giving up a tying HR, game-winning triple to Uggla in space of 24 hours. Not good.

-- Rays scored two in ninth without making an out as magical season continued with a 4-3 win over Astros. Tampa Bay is now just half-game behind Boston (one game up in the loss column). Crowd was 29,000+, boosted by post-game concert.

Sunday's List of 13: NFL stats to ponder on a summer Sunday

      13) Drew Brees (652) threw the most passes in NFL last year, 74 more than Tom Brady. Odd that a QB on a 16-0 team would be second in league in passes thrown, but Brady was.

      12) Brady averaged 8.31 yards/attempt, best in NFL, explaining why he had 50 TD passes and only eight INTs.

      11) Ben Roethlisberger lost 347 yards on his 47 sacks LY; only Jon Kitna (51) was sacked more than Big Ben-- Kitna lost a few less yards (320) than Roethlisberger did.

      10) Kitma, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning threw 20 interceptions each, most in the NFL last season.

      9) 21 running backs ran ball 200+ times last year; of those, only Adrian Peterson (1,341 yards, 5.6 ypc), Fred Taylor (1,202, 5.4) amd Brandon Jacobs (1,009, 5.0) averaged 5+ yards per carry.

      8) Clinton Portis (325 carries) ran the ball the most times. with Edgerrin James (324) and Willie Parker (321) right behind him.

      7) Rams' Brian Leonard (86 carries, 303 yards) ran ball the most times without scoring a TD; unusual for a guy his size- you'd think he would have gottem the ball near the goal line, though the 3-13 Rams didn't get near the goal line that often in 2007.

      6) Wes Welker (112 catches, 1,175 yds), TJ Houshmendzadeh (112 catches, 112/1,143) caught most passes; TJ scored twelve TDs, Welker nine.

      5) Guys who scoired TDs on a high percentage of their catches Randy Moss (23 TDs/96 catches, 24%), Braylon Edwards (16 on 80, 20%), Terrell Owens (15/81, 18.5%), Plaxico Burress (12 on 70, 17.1%), and Nate Burleson (nine of 50, 18%).

      4) Kenny Watson (52 catches, 374 yards) caught most passes without scoring a TD. Josh Reed (51/578), and Adrian Peterson of the Bears (51/420) both caiught 51 balls without a TD.

      3) Arizona's Antrel Rolle ran three of his five INTs back for six points; he averaged 46.2 yards per INT return.

      2) Cleveland's Josh Cribbs led NFL with 30.7 ypr running back kicks; he was a college QB at Bowling Green. Andre Davis and Leon Washington both ran three kicks back for TDs.

      1) Devin Hester ran 42 punts back for 651 yards, with four TDs and only six fair catches. Patrick Crayton of Dallas ran back 22 punts for 9.1 ypr, while fair catching 20 punts.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

                MLB

                Sunday, June 22

We will update when projected scores are available.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Philadelphia Phillies [1:35 PM ET]

Angels: Jered Weaver is 4-2 in his last six starts but he's been inconsistent during those outings. Three times during that span Weaver allowed two runs or less but in the other three appearances he gave up four runs or more. Weaver is an even 3-3 on the road this season but his ERA is a lofty 5.98. On the bright side, Weaver has pitched well in three of his previous four starts away from home. The OVER is 4-2 in Weaver's last six starts.

Angels are 7-1 in their last 8 road games.
The UNDER is 16-5-2 in LA's last 23 road games.

Key Injuries - RP Chris Bootcheck (0-1; shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phillies (-175, O/U 9): Cole Hamels has been dominating over his last three starts, allowing just four runs in 24 innings. In his last 10 starts, Hamels has allowed two runs or less six times. Opposing teams haven't had much luck when facing Hamels at Citizens Bank Park. Hamels has a stellar 2.73 ERA and batters are hitting just .200 against him in nine home starts. Even though Hamels has been impressive, the OVER is 6-4 the last 10 times he's taken the mound.

Phillies are 1-6 in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 14-4 in Philadelphia's last 18 games overall.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

St. Louis Cardinals at Boston Red Sox [1:35 PM ET]

Cardinals: Joel Pineiro hasn't won a game since April 29 and the Cards have lost the last four times he's taken the hill. Pineiro has actually suffered from a lack of run support recently, offsetting three strong outings in a row. In his last 17.2 innings of work, Pineiro has allowed six runs but has a loss and two no-decisions over that span. Pineiro isn't the guy you want on the mound against the Red Sox. He's just 3-5 with an ERA of 6.75 in nine career starts versus Boston. The UNDER is 4-1 in Pineiro's last five starts.

Cardinals are 6-1 in their last 7 road games

Key Injuries - 1B Albert Pujols (.347; calf) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-200, O/U 9.5): Jon Lester is really rolling right now. He's won three straight games, allowing just three runs in his last 20.1 innings of work. The problem Lester had last season was walking batters but he's really improved on that this year, allowing two walks or less seven times in his previous 10 starts. Lester has been a beast at home, going 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA in eight starts at Fenway Park.

Red Sox are 48-13 in their last 61 interleague games.
Red Sox are 40-13 in their last 53 home games.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Dodgers [4:10 PM ET]

Indians: Cliff Lee brings his 10-1 record West to take on the Dodgers. Lee had a four-game winning streak snapped his last time out against the Padres, taking a no-decision in an 8-3 Cleveland loss. In his last 10 starts, Lee has allowed two runs or less six times. The key to Lee's success has been control. He has given out just 14 walks compared to 76 strikeouts this season. Surprisingly, the OVER has cashed easily in each of Lee's last three starts.

The OVER is 8-2 in Cleveland's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Victor Martinez (.278; elbow surgery) is out 6-8 weeks.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-165, O/U 8.5): Clayton Kershaw is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in his five starts this season. Kershaw hasn't gone deep into games but he's given the Dodgers a shot to win each time out, allowing two runs or less in four of his starts. Walks have been a bit of a problem for the rookie. He's given out 15 free passes in just 24 innings of work. The UNDER is 2-0 in Kershaw's two starts at Dodger Stadium this season.

Dodgers are 14-38 in their last 52 interleague games.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

White Sox: Javier Vazquez is 2-1 in his last three starts but that has more to do with strong run support than it does his pitching. Vazquez has allowed 24 hits and 14 runs in his last 17.1 innings on the mound. Luckily for him, the White Sox have put up 27 runs over that span, including 26 in the two games Vazquez won. Vazquez has started 14 games against the Cubs over his career but has only factored in the decision six times, going 3-3 with an ERA of 4.84.

The UNDER is 21-9 in Chicago's last 30 road games.

Key Injuries - 1B Paul Konerko (.215; oblique) is on the 15-day DL.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-140): The Cubs are 4-1 in Ryan Dempster's last five starts. In those five games, Dempster has allowed just 10 runs over 31.1 innings. Betting Dempster at Wrigley Field has been close to a sure thing this season. In nine home starts he's 8-0 with an ERA of 2.83. In his last five home starts, Dempster has allowed a total of eight runs. It's hard to predict an OVER/UNDER when Dempster is on the mound. Eight of his 15 starts have landed on a total of either eight or nine runs scored.

Cubs are 13-0 in their last 13 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is out at least 6 weeks.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                  Sunday's streaking starting pitchers

                  Streaking

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees (4.29, 7-5)

At a time when the Yankees pitching staff badly needs a hero, Andy Pettitte has stepped up to the task. With a little bit of help from his teammates, Pettitte has won five of his last six starts but his last two outings were the best of the bunch. On June 12 in Oakland, the veteran left-hander worked eight innings and held the A’s to just five hits and one run and then on June 17, in his last start, he held the Padres off the board for seven innings in a 4-0 win.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (2.21, 8-1)

San Fran’s little big man is brilliant anywhere he plays, but on the road he’s been unbeatable this season. In seven road starts, Lincecum is 6-0 and has an ERA of 1.42. His last start away from San Francisco was in Colorado on June 11. Lincecum pitched seven innings in that game, didn’t give up a single run and struck out nine batters in a 1-0 loss – the only time the Giants haven’t won when Lincecum made a road start.

                  Slumping

Tim Hudson, Atlanta Braves (3.17, 7-5)

The Braves haven’t won with Hudson on the mound since May 22 – that’s five straight losses. To be fair, Hudson can’t be blamed for all of them. In fact, the right-hander pitched very well in all but his latest start, in which it all seemed to fall apart and he gave up six earned runs to the Texas Rangers in just over four innings of work

                    Gameday
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Sunday MLB Gameday

Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb will be looking for his 12th win of the season when he takes on the Twins on Sunday afternoon. Here's a look in your MLB Gameday . . .

Los Angeles Angels at Philadelphia Phillies, 1:35pm ET
Jered Weaver (6-7, 4.73 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (7-4, 3.23 ERA)

Weaver didn't fare very well against an NL East opponent in his last start - he was knocked around for six earned runs on eight hits over 6 1-3 innings against the Mets. That defeat snapped the righthander's modest two-game winning streak, and it put his record back below the .500 mark on the season. Weaver is 4-2 over his last six outings.

Hamels was pounded back-to-back by the Astros and Marlins on May 25 and May 31, but since then he's turned in three strong outings in a row. The lefthander is coming off an interleague win over the Red Sox on June 16 in which he surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings of work, walking two and striking out five.

Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays, 1:40pm ET
Brandon Backe (4-8, 4.99 ERA) vs. Scott Kazmir (6-2, 1.76 ERA)

Backe hasn't won since May 23, when he came out on top versus the Phillies. Since that outing the righthander has gone 0-3 with a no-decision, and he's seen his ERA creep up to 4.99. Backe took that no-decision last time out, allowing three earned runs on eight hits over 5 2-3 innings versus the Orioles, walking two and striking out just one.

Kazmir was yanked from his last outing versus the Cubs after just 4 2-3 innings because of a high pitch count, but he'd allowed just one earned run on three hits (while collecting seven strikeouts). The lefthander has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his nine starts so far this season, and his ERA is now comfortably below 2.00.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Minnesota Twins, 2:10pm ET
Brandon Webb (11-3, 3.27 ERA) vs. Livan Hernandez (7-4, 5.51 ERA)

Webb might have 11 wins on the season, but he's 0-1 with a no-decision over his past two starts. The righthander will be looking to forget his last outing when he takes to the mound on Sunday - he was knocked around for seven earned runs on nine hits over just 3 1-3 innings in a loss to the Athletics. Webb walked five and fanned three that day.

Hernandez is coming off a solid outing - he held the Nationals to just one earned run on five hits over seven innings in his start on June 17 (a victory). However, the righthander had been pretty terrible prior to that outing, as he'd allowed five or more runs in each of his previous five starts. Hernandez is now 1-3 with three no-decisions in the past month.

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs, 8:05pm ET
Javier Vazquez (7-5, 4.13 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (8-2, 2.76 ERA)

Vazquez has seen his ERA climb over 4.00 with three bad outings in a row. The righthander has allowed 14 earned runs on 24 hits over his last 17 1-3 innings pitched, although he did manage to go 2-1 over that span thanks to good run support. Against the Pirates last time out Vazquez allowed five earned runs on five hits over six innings.

Dempster continues to show he belongs in the rotation instead of the bullpen, as he's allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past five outings. The righthander hasn't lost since May 20 (versus the Astros). Dempster gave up just one earned run on six hits over five innings against the Rays last time out, walking two and striking out six.

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Florida vs. Oakland (-165, 8)

The Marlins come to the end of a tough nine-game interleague road trip today before they get a day off and head home.

They are 4-4 heading into today's game against the A's but they aren't exactly facing a guy they'd like to see when they're running out of gas. Justin Duchscherer climbs the mound for Oakland, who has allowed just six runs over his last five games.

The righty is 3-0 over his last three starts and the A's supplied him with a pile of run support in those outings.

                      Pick: Oakland

                      Cleveland vs. L.A. Dodgers (-165, 8 1/2)

Reliever Scott Proctor climbed the mound in the 11th inning Saturday night in hopes of helping the Dodgers pull out a win with the score 1-1 after nine innings.

Five batters, four earned runs and no outs later and Proctor got the cane.

"There is nothing (wrong), and I'm tired of people making excuses and saying I'm hurt. My job is to get outs, and I'm (expletive) pathetic. It's embarrassing to know this team battled like that all day and I pitched like that. It's (expletive) stupid," Proctor told the Los Angeles Daily News.

"I'm embarrassed for myself in front of my teammates."

Proctor shouldn't feel so bad - the rest of the Dodgers bullpen hasn't sparkled lately either. L.A.'s pen has a 5.20 ERA over its last 10 games. The Dodgers have been forced to call on all seven of their relievers for a total of 11 innings against the Indians, so they're not only struggling, but they're also getting tired.

Cleveland's bullpen isn't any better with a 6.00 ERA over its last 10 games. That might make the over worth a look for today's game.

                      Pick: over

                            Monday, June 23

Arizona at Boston (7:05 p.m. EDT). The Diamondbacks’ Dan Haren (7-4, 3.26 ERA) and Josh Beckett (7-4, 3.87) of the Red Sox present an interesting matchup on a light day in the major leagues, with just five games on the schedule.

                            STARS
                            Saturday

                            - Aramis Ramirez, Cubs, homered and drove in four runs in an 11-7 victory over the crosstown rival White Sox.

                            - Troy Glaus, Cardinals, hit his fourth career grand slam in a 9-3 rout of the Red Sox.

                            - Joe Saunders, Angels, gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings to beat the team that first drafted him with a 6-2 win over the Phillies.

                            - Jose Bautista, Pirates, was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in a 6-3 win over the Blue Jays.

                            - Mike Aviles, Royals, had three hits and drove in two in a 5-3 win over the Giants.

                            - Nick Blackburn, Twins, yielded three hits and one run over seven innings to beat the Diamondbacks 6-1.

                            - Ubaldo Jimenez, Rockies, gave up two hits and a run with four walks, beating the Mets 7-1 for just his second win in nine decisions.

                            DICY DICE-K

Daisuke Matsuzaka said he felt fine in his return from the disabled list, but didn't look that way. He came back from a rotator cuff strain and gave up seven runs in one-plus inning of a 9-3 loss to St. Louis, the shortest outing of his major league career.

                            SUPERSTAR SETH

Seth McClung has sure provided an unexpected spark for the Brewers. He became a starter on May 24 when Milwaukee replaced an ineffective Carlos Villanueva in the rotation, and the Brewers are 18-8 since then. That after McClung was 12-20 with a 6.17 ERA in three seasons with the Rays organization.

                            BLUE JAYS SWOONING

A change in managers hasn't done much for the Blue Jays, who lost 6-3 to Pittsburgh despite giving up just seven baserunners and never letting one stand on second or third base. Toronto has lost a season-high seven straight, two of them under Cito Gaston, who was promoted to replaced the fired John Gibbons.

                            BACK AT YA

Joe Saunders showed the Phillies what they could've had if they'd just offered him more money nine years ago. The Angels starters allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings of a 6-2 win. The left-hander was originally drafted out of high school by the Phillies in the fifth round of the 1999 amateur draft. He didn't sign a contract, went to Virginia Tech and was selected in the first round (12th overall) by the Angels in 2002.

                            RAYS STILL SHINING

The Rays won for the first time this season when trailing after eight innings, loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth before getting a two-run double from pinch-hitter Gabe Gross to beat Houston 4-3. The Rays won for the sixth time in eight games.

                            JUST LIKE BABE

C.C. Sabathia made like Babe Ruth in a 7-2, 11-inning win over the Dodgers. Not only did the Cleveland ace strike out 10 and keep the Indians in the game, he also hit a home run estimated at 440 feet and improved to 12-for-40 lifetime as a hitter with seven RBIs.

                            SPEAKING

"It wasn't a great experience, but it's water under the bridge. It was nice to show them what they missed out on. But there's no hard feelings."-Angels starter Joe Saunders, who gave up two runs in seven innings of a 6-2 win over the Phillies, who drafted him in the fifth round out of high school but were unable to sign him.
