    Weekend Sports Preview

Even with the NBA season now over, it’s still a busy weekend for sports bettors with a full slate of MLB, AFL, WNBA, NASCAR and Formula 1 racing.

On the diamond this weekend, interleague play continues with another round of National League versus American League. AL teams that will travel to NL locales and nervously watch their pitchers step in to the batter's box include Toronto at Pittsburgh, White Sox at Cubs, Angels at Philadelphia, Seattle at Atlanta, Texas at Washington, Baltimore at Milwaukee, Detroit at San Diego and Cleveland at the Dodgers.

The NL teams that will look to take advantage of the DH rule this weekend include St. Louis at Boston in a 2004 World Series rematch, Cincinnati at the Yankees, Houston at Tampa Bay, Arizona at Minnesota, San Francisco at Kansas City and Florida at Oakland. The lone all-NL matchup of the weekend has the Mets traveling to Colorado.

The AFL kicks off the final week of the regular season on Saturday with a few teams still fighting for a spot in the playoffs. There are six games on tap for Saturday starting with Columbus at Cleveland (-14), Grand Rapids at New Orleans (-7), Los Angeles at Tampa Bay (-7.5) and Kansas City at Colorado (-7.5). The late games on Saturday include Georgia at San Jose (-6.5) and Utah at Arizona (+4.5).

Two more games follow on Sunday as Philadelphia takes on New York (+3) and Dallas battles Chicago (-3).

The NBA Finals may be over, but there’s still WNBA action on the hardcourt this weekend. There are six games on the schedule Friday night, including Atlanta at Washington, Minnesota at Detroit, Los Angeles at San Antonio, Indiana at Seattle, Connecticut at Sacramento and Chicago at Phoenix.

There is only one game on Saturday, Houston at Minnesota, and four more games on Sunday, including Detroit at Atlanta, Phoenix at New York, Chicago at Sacramento and Indiana at Los Angeles.

On the track this weekend NASCAR takes a detour from the oval with their first road-course race of the season, the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Last year Juan Pablo Montoya used his extensive experience from Indy Car and Formula 1 to win at Infineon and he’s a favorite to win again. A road-course race means a few road-course ringers will be among the field, including Boris Said and Ron Fellows who will try to upset the regular frontrunners.

Formula 1 returns to the track on Sunday with the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours. Kimi Raikkonen took the checkered flag in France last year, while two weeks ago Robert Kubica raced to the top of the driver standings in the Canadian Grand Prix by recording his first career F1 win.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- According to the guys announcing the Rockies game last night, a total of 60,752 players have played in big leagues; of those 60,752, 1,528 played in just one or two games.

-- Dave Bush had no-hitter in 8th inning, lost it, then Brewers held on for dear life, winning 8-7 in game that Fielder had an inside-the-park home run. Very weird game.

-- John McLaren lasted just 156 games as Seattle's manager, less than one full season. Quite a mess they have up there.

-- Carlos Marmol walked two batters, then hit two batters in 7th inning Thursday, before Carl Crawford hit grand slam off Scott Eyre on just the Rays' second swing of inning. Tampa sweeps the Cubs, before a crowd of 34,441; a total of 97,544 fans saw Rays sweep the three-game series at The Trop.

-- The NHL Draft is Friday night at 7 on Versus from Ottawa. Good TV; all the executives from all the teams are there- the only sport where that happens. Its a great idea.

-- There is a rookie umpire named Adrian Johnson who gets into an argument almost every night; he's having a difficult time the last couple of weeks.

Friday's List of 13: Runnin' the bases in the AL..........

Orioles-- 22-12 at home, 22-15 outside of their tough division, the 37-34 O's are a fun team, just no one knows it because the Tampa Rays might be baseball's best story since the '69 Mets.

Red Sox-- 28-7 at home, 11-3 vs lefty starters; Cardinals invade Fenway after getting swept at home by Royals, without Pujols, so the 19-3 home streak for Boston figures to get even better.

White Sox-- Won 12 of last 14 home games, scored 115 runs in 15 games since Ozzie bitched about the offense, but they have lost six games in a row on the road (scoring total of ten runs). .

Indians-- Indians lost five of their last six road games, are 13-22 overall on road, lost seven of nine vs NL teams. Scored a total of seven runs in three-game debacle at Coors; is Wedge safe?

Detroit-- Won 10 of last 12 games, are now seven games out in AL Central; problem is, they're 21-33 vs right-handed starters, there are more righty starters than lefties. 6-15 last 21 on road.

Kansas City-- Royals won six of their last seven games, giving up total of 10 runs during 5-game win streak; they've got good interesting nucleus of young starters, are getting good season from leadoff hitter DeJesus.

LA Angels-- Won nine of last 12 on road, visit Philly over the weekend; Garry Matthews Jr plays in front of his dad, who is a Phils' TV announcer. Halos lead AL West by 3.5 games, are 4-5 in interleague play, little disappointing.

Minnesota-- Twins won five of their last six, are 6-2 in their ast eight at Metrodome. Liriano is pitching very well in AAA; with Twins in second place, 4.5 games out, don't they need him?

Bronx-- Bombers won seven in row, twelve of last fifteen, but still trail Rays by 3.5 games in Wild Card race. Chamberlain has made two strong starts in row, but against Astros, Padres, not exactly the Red Sox or Tiger lineups.

Oakland-- Truly amazing that they sit at 39-33 on June 20, just 3.5 games out of first; their over/under win total for this season is 73.5, so in eyes of Vegas, 74-88 would have been good year.

Seattle-- Fired McLaren Thursday, after they fired the GM who fired the hitting coach. Next up is sale of marketable players on this lifeless team (Ibanez, Vidro, Bedard?) McLaren lasted only 156 games as manager, less than one full season.

Tampa Bay-- Rays won 25 of their last 29 home games, are best story in major leagues since McGwire/Sosa HR race, but that was a fraud. They scored four runs off Marmol on Thursday, but the four batters only swung the bat once. Every night, it is a different guy the hero-- Thursday it was Crawford.

Texas-- 37-37 with lousy starting pitching; they're 7-15 vs lefty starters, which tells you how much Hamilton has meant to the lineup. 14-10 in division, 11-8 in one-run games; Washington has proven to be a competent manager. He needs pitching.

Toronto-- Toronto is 1-7 in its last eight road games; the GM is making an ass of himself, ripping Adam Dunn on a radio show for no reason at all. Tampa's magical season is going to get lot of people in Toronto fired. Rumor is Cito Gaston coming back once again to manage the Blue Jays.

White Sox: John Danks takes to the road where he is 2-1 on the year with a fantastic 1.72 ERA in six starts. Danks has one win and three no-decisions in his last four outings, although the White Sox have emerged victorious in three of those games. In his last 10 starts overall, Danks has allowed two runs or less an impressive eight times. The UNDER is 5-1 in Danks' six road starts this season.

Cubs (-135): Ted Lilly has pitched well for the Cubs in his last 10 starts, going 6-2 with four no-decisions. Lilly is currently riding a two-game winning streak, allowing just five hits and three runs over his last 12.2 innings of work. Lilly is 4-2 at Wrigley Field but strong run support has helped offset his 5.03 home ERA. You can expect to see a lot of runs scored when Lilly is on the mound. The OVER is 7-3 in his last 10 starts.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is out at least 6 weeks.

Los Angeles Angels at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Angels: Ervin Santana has cooled off some after a red-hot start to the season. The Angels are just 2-5 in Santana's last seven starts. In three of those games he pitched well, allowing just two runs each time out. However, he's been battered in the other four, giving up 19 runs in 23.1 innings pitched. Santana has been surprisingly strong on the road this year, going 5-1 with a 3.50 ERA. The UNDER has a slight 6-4 advantage in Santana's last 10 starts.

Over his last 25.1 innings of work, Eaton has allowed just eight runs, leading the Phillies to a 3-1 record over that span. Eaton has been much more effective at home where he's 2-1 with an ERA of 3.89. While his overall ERA is on the high side (4.57), the UNDER is 7-3 the last 10 times Eaton has taken the mound.

Tigers: Eddie Bonine gets his second start of the season and the Detroit faithful are hoping it goes much better than his debate against the Dodgers did. Bonine got the win thanks to the Tigers scoring 12 runs but he was far from impressive, allowing six runs in 5.1 innings. Before being called up from the minors, Bonine was 24-7 with the Erie Sea Wolves and Toledo Mud Hens. He was 9-2 with Toledo this season but his ERA was an unimpressive 4.48.

Padres (-130, O/U 8.5): No one has benefited more from pitcher friendly Petco Park than wily veteran Greg Maddux. While Maddux is just 1-0 in seven appearances at Petco this year, he has a spectacular 1.70 ERA. However, the Padres have managed to go just 4-3 in those games, despite Maddux putting up strong performances. The OVER is 4-1 the last four times Maddux has taken the hill.

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:40 PM ET]

Indians: Cliff Lee brings his 10-1 record West to take on the Dodgers. Lee had a four-game winning streak snapped his last time out against the Padres, taking a no-decision in an 8-3 Cleveland loss. In his last 10 starts, Lee has allowed two runs or less six times. The key to Lee's success has been control. He has given out just 14 walks compared to 76 strikeouts this season. Surprisingly, the OVER has cashed easily in each of Lee's last three starts.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers (-115, O/U 8): Clayton Kershaw is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in his five starts this season. Kershaw hasn't gone deep into games but he's given the Dodgers a shot to win each time out, allowing two runs or less in four of his starts. Walks have been a bit of a problem for the rookie. He's given out 15 free passes in just 24 innings of work. The UNDER is 2-0 in Kershaw's two starts at Dodger Stadium this season.

                        SCOREBOARD

                        Friday, June 20

Cleveland at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:40 p.m. EDT). Cliff Lee (10-1, 2.55 ERA) tries again for his 11th win when he leads the Indians against promising youngster Clayton Kershaw (0-1, 3.75) and the Dodgers. Kershaw is still looking for his first career victory.

                        STARS

                        Thursday

-Jermaine Dye, White Sox, went 3-for-4 with two homers, a double and six RBIs in a 13-8 win over the Pirates. Dye also scored three times.

-Dave Bush, Brewers, carried a no-hitter into the eighth and gave up one run on two hits and a walk before the bullpen nearly squandered a big lead in an 8-7 victory over the Blue Jays.

-Justin Upton, Diamondbacks, hit an eighth-inning tiebreaking homer in a 2-1 win over Oakland, and also doubled and scored Arizona's other run.

-Carl Crawford, Rays, went 3-for-5 with his second career grand slam to power a seven-run seventh inning and an 8-3 win over the Cubs.

-Zack Greinke, Royals, gave up one run on two hits and a walk over seven innings of a 4-1 win over St. Louis, striking out seven.

-Joba Chamberlain, Yankees, struck out a career-high nine while allowing four hits and one run over 5 2-3 innings, but got a no-decision in a 2-1 win over San Diego.

-Matt Kemp, Dodgers, homered and drove in three runs in a 7-4 win over Cincinnati.

                        NOT QUITE BUSH LEAGUE

Brewers starter Dave Bush took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before it was broken up by the player he was traded for, Lyle Overbay, and Milwaukee held off Toronto 8-7. Bush (3-7) began the day with a team-high 5.73 ERA, but retired the first 15 Blue Jays. Juan Nieves pitched the only no-hitter in Brewers' history, 7-0 against Baltimore on April 15, 1987.

                        ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER

The Braves lost their major league-record 22nd straight one-run game on the road when Texas rallied for a 5-4 victory, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The previous mark was 21 by Kansas City during a stretch over the 2000-01 seasons. Atlanta hasn't won a one-run game on the road since Aug. 10, 2007.

                        SUN SHINING ON RAYS

It was quite the day for Tampa Bay. The surprising Rays scored seven times in the seventh inning to rally for an 8-3 win over Chicago, climbing 14 games over .500 (43-29) for the first time in franchise history with their third sweep of a first-place team. They also signed high school shortstop Tim Beckham, the No. 1 pick in this month's baseball draft, to a minor league deal that included a $6.15 million signing bonus.

                        I-70 ROYALTY

The Royals completed their first sweep of in-state rival St. Louis since 2001, with Zack Greinke throwing a gem in a 4-1 win. The Royals are 7-2 in interleague play, with road series wins at Florida and Arizona, despite an overall record of 31-42. KC has won five straight.

                        WHITE SOX CLEANING UP

Chicago scored six times in the second inning and pounded out 15 hits in a 13-8 win over the Pirates, two days after collecting 19 hits in a 16-5 win in the series opener. The White Sox scored 37 runs, had 44 hits and hit 10 homers in the three-game set with Pittsburgh.

                        GREEN LIGHT AGAINST REDS

The Dodgers seem to pick on the Reds no matter where they play. Los Angeles arrived in Cincinnati with a five-game losing streak and an offense that could barely score, but won three in a row for the first time since their three-game sweep of the Reds in L.A. from May 19-21. The Dodgers are 7-1 this season against Cincinnati.

                        STREAKING

Oakland CF Ryan Sweeney singled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest for the A's this season. ... Arizona has led the NL West for 67 straight games, one shy of the team record set July 16-Sept. 29, 2002. ... Atlanta stole two bases, giving Texas opponents 23 in a row when Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the catcher. ... Houston has lost a franchise-record six straight interleague games after a 7-4 defeat to the Orioles.

                        SPEAKING

"It has been pretty tough, but in the end, it's a game where you're going to fail a lot, and it's something you have to live with. To play the way I did today, hopefully it turns things around.'' -Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton, who had been 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts during a six-game homestand before hitting a double, the go-ahead homer and scoring both runs in a 2-1 win over the Athletics.

                        SEASONS

1994 - The Detroit Tigers' string of 25 straight games hitting a home run ended in a 7-1 loss to Cleveland. The streak matched the major league mark set by the 1941 New York Yankees.

1998 - Sammy Sosa hit two home runs for the second straight day to set a major league record with 16 homers in June as the Chicago Cubs beat Philadelphia 9-4.

2001 - Barry Bonds broke two major league records with his 38th homer, including one set by Babe Ruth in 1928, as the Giants beat San Diego 8-3. Bonds hit a two-run shot in the eighth inning to break out of a tie with Reggie Jackson (1969) and Mark McGwire (1998) for the most homers before the All-Star break. And he became the quickest to 38, doing it in his team's 71st game. Ruth hit 38 in 88 games in 1928.

2007 - Sammy Sosa hit his 600th home run, making him the fifth player to reach the milestone. Sosa, playing for the Texas Rangers following a year out of baseball, hit a solo homer off Jason Marquis. It came in the fifth inning against the Chicago Cubs, the team he played for from 1992-2004.

Today's birthdays: Kevin Gregg 30; Bobby Seay 30; Carlos Lee 32; Rob Mackowiak 32; Paul Bako 36; Juan Castro 36.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Streaking

Aaron Cook, Colorado Rockies (10-3, 3.29 ERA)

The Rockies will have their ace on the mound as Cook tries to match Arizona's Brandon Webb for the major league lead in wins. The right-hander earned his career-high 10th win on Sunday, allowing three runs and 10 hits in six innings of a 5-3 road victory over the Chicago White Sox. He has won three straight starts and is 4-0 in his last five.

Cook is 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in seven career appearances - five starts - against the Mets. He threw a four-hitter in a 4-1 win over them on May 25.

Jeff Suppan, Milwaukee Brewers (4-4, 3.68 ERA)

In 18 of the past 22 games, a Milwaukee starter has allowed three or fewer runs. Milwaukee's rotation is 13-4 in that stretch with a 2.87 ERA.

Suppan has been a big part of that success, going 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in his last four starts. He limited Minnesota to two runs and seven hits over seven innings on Saturday, but was gone by the time the Brewers lost 9-4 in 12 innings.

The veteran right-hander is 3-3 with a 4.86 ERA in eight career starts against the Orioles, but this will be his first appearance versus them since Sept. 22, 2003 with Boston.

                            Slumping

Erik Bedard, Seattle Mariners (4-4, 4.14 ERA)

Bedard's lack of a dominating presence has contributed to Seattle's underachieving. He gets the start for Seattle tonight, one day after the team fired manager John McLaren. Acquired by Bavasi in the offseason from Baltimore to shore up the front of the rotation, the left-hander has just two wins in his last nine starts and is winless since May 28.

Bedard has been plagued by an inability to pitch deep into games. He threw 99 pitches in six innings Saturday and allowed two runs against Washington before leaving without a decision in Seattle's 5-2 loss.

After that start, McLaren admitted to the team's website "we know Erik is a 100-pitch pitcher, and no use dwelling on it. It is what it is."

Hot Lines: Friday's best MLB bets
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs (-130, no total)

As Cubs fans know all too well, disappointment is a fact of life on the North Side and there are signs that there could be a downside to this seemingly glorious season - and the frustration could begin soon.

The loss of Alfonso Soriano was manageable. The news about Carlos Zambrano hurts a little bit more. But the worst sign for the Cubs was their recent sweep in Tampa Bay at the hands of the Rays. It's no shame to lose to a club like Tampa, but fans should be worried because it seemed to indicate that club that is wearing down.

Thanks to a Hall of Fame exhibition game scheduled (but rained out) for June 16, the Cubs have had only one day off in the last six weeks. Add the injuries to key players and it's not surprising that this team is on the verge of a slump. The White Sox, conversely, have been heating up both on the mound and at the plate - and don't expect Wrigley to save the Cubs in this series because the home team is only 7-11 when these teams meet over the last three seasons.

                              Pick: White Sox

Cincinnati at New York Yankees (-138, 9)

There's a simple rule that all baseball bettors should follow: always take the hot team over the slumping team. The Yankees are finally starting to look like the Yankees again after winning seven straight games and they shouldn't have a tough time improving on that against a Cincinnati club that has lost five straight and might be without Ken Griffey Jr. again today.

Despite New York's ailing pitching staff, it hasn't hurt them in their recent games. After Joba Chamberlain was moved to a starting role, a lot of onlookers thought the Yankees' bullpen would be in trouble, but over the last 10 games, the relievers have been lights-out as they've protected leads effectively and posted a 1.98 ERA.

It also won't hurt that the Yanks are hitting .293 off right-handers at home as they get their first look at Edinson Voloquez.

                              Pick: Yankees
